Pat Casey was the first person besides founder Fred Luddy to write code at ServiceNow back in 2005, when it was called Glide and lived above a friend's restaurant. Twenty years later, he's CTO of a company where 85% of the Fortune 500 are customers, and until recently ran all of engineering: 10,000 people, 7,000 of them writing code. Almost nobody survives the journey from first engineer to public-company CTO. Pat did. Tobi and Pat dig into how ServiceNow actually works under the hood: a metadata processing engine running 90,000 single-tenant databases and over 25 billion queries an hour, why they bought a 15-person German database company and turned it into RaptorDB, and why tearing apart a 20-year-old monolith is harder than every senior engineer thinks. Then the conversation turns to AI. Pat bought 7,000 Windsurf licenses and measured a real, but unglamorous, 15% productivity bump, with a small subset of engineers going 5–6x while most barely changed. His thesis: AI coding is like playing five chessboards at once, and it's reshuffling the deck on who the top engineers will be. On agents, ServiceNow's answer is disarmingly simple: create a user called "AI Pat," assign it cases, and make it follow the exact same rules as humans because you should not trust an LLM more than you trust a human being. Schon wenn Du dieses Gespräch hier hörst oder wenn Du ihm zum ersten Mal begegnest, bemerkst Du oft zunächst gar nicht, weshalb er Eindruck hinterlässt. Es fehlt jede offensichtliche Erklärung. Kein übertriebener Charme. Keine einstudierte Eloquenz. Keine kalkulierte Originalität. Und doch bleibt nach einer Begegnung das Gefühl zurück, etwas Substanzielles berührt zu haben. Etwas, das nicht für den Augenblick geschaffen wurde. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass er aus einer anderen Zeit zu stammen scheint. Nicht als Museumsstück, sondern als Archivar einer Epoche, in der Menschen wussten, dass Charakter wichtiger sei als Selbstdarstellung. Heute wird vieles produziert. Meinungen. Empörungen. Karrieren. Persönlichkeiten. Alles erscheint verfügbar, bearbeitbar und vermarktbar. Doch Dr. Ulrich Sautter wirkt seltsam unberührt von dieser Entwicklung. Als hätte er irgendwann beschlossen, dass Integrität ein besseres Geschäftsmodell sei als Aufmerksamkeit. Eine riskante Entscheidung. Aber offenbar eine erfolgreiche. Und eigentlich definiert es sich leicht, denn Ulrich definiert eine andere Form von Autorität. Eine, die nicht beansprucht werden muss. Sie wird einfach wahrgenommen. Wie ein Gebirge. Niemand diskutiert ernsthaft mit einem Gebirge. Du kannst es mögen oder nicht mögen, seine Existenz bleibt davon vollkommen unberührt. Eine Gemütsstärke, die wahrscheinlich aus der Zeit resultierenden Erfahrung erwuchs. Dadurch definiert er seine ganz eigene Perspektive. Wenn Du lange genug die Weinszene begleitest, erkennst Du, dass die meisten Revolutionen irgendwann zu Traditionen werden und die meisten Gewissheiten später als Irrtümer enden. Er sieht die Dinge gelassener, aber auf keinen Fall gelangweilt, sondern zugleich lebendig interessiert. Und nicht zuletzt definiert sich Uli über seinen ihm eigenen überraschenden Humor. Keinen lauten Humor. Keinen Humor für Bühnen. Sondern jene trockene, präzise Form der Komik, die aus Erfahrung entsteht. Wenn Du lange genug Menschen beobachtest, erkennst Du irgendwann die Absurditäten des Lebens mit einer Gelassenheit, die zugleich freundlich und gnadenlos wirkt. Woher diese Gelassenheit rührt? Wahrscheinlich aus einer seiner größten Stärken, denn Ulrich Sautter kann eines und das besonders gut: zuhören. Eine beinahe ausgestorbene Kunst. Besonders in Milieus wie dem unseren und Professionen wie der seinen, die vom Reden leben. Doch genau darin liegt ein Teil seiner Anziehungskraft. Menschen fühlen sich in seiner Gegenwart oft erstaunlich ernst genommen. Nicht weil er ihnen zustimmt. Sondern weil er tatsächlich zuhört. Es gibt einen fundamentalen Unterschied zwischen Warten und Zuhören. Die meisten warten lediglich auf ihren Einsatz. Ulrich hört zu. Und vielleicht ist genau das der Grund, weshalb er so glaubwürdig ist. Nicht wegen seiner Antworten. Wegen seiner Aufmerksamkeit. In einer Welt voller Sender wird ein guter Empfänger und Reflektor zur Rarität. Eine Autorität ohne Inszenierung und gerade deshalb von unschätzbarem Wert.

Some good, some bad, but all of it steeped in the myth and mythos. Lovecraft was very good at atmosphere.This podcast was perfect. It felt like a real investigative podcast and with BBC 4 backing it the production quality was incredible. Over the next several years the Lovecraft Investigation podcast continued to slowly put out some fantastic episodes that really felt like you were in a Call of Cthulhu game. Then in 2023 it just stopped.Not a big surprise because podcasts stop all the time. In 2011 Heroku defined the 12 factor app to remove emerging bottlenecks as developers tried to scale their output when they moved from building monoliths to microservices. What does it mean to be American? What does it mean to be Asian American — and why, in 2026, are so many of us still leading with worry? Today, in honor of AANHPI Heritage Month, we're diving into the TAAF STAATUS Index 2026 by unpacking some stats that are eye-opening, some that are infuriating, and some that are deeply familiar. We'll talk about how Asian Americans are seen - and how we see ourselves - from the food on our plates to the question of whether you even have to be born here to belong here. It's AANHPI Heritage Month, and we have some thoughts (unsurprising to all of our regular listeners, we're sure!). In this episode of the Straight White American Jesus Sunday Interview, host Leah Payne speaks with Jonathan Calvillo, sociologist of religion at Candler School of Theology at Emory University and author of The Saints of Santa Ana, about growing tensions within Latino evangelical and Pentecostal communities over immigration, political representation, and the public platforming of prominent evangelical leader Samuel Rodriguez. The conversation centers on the recent “We Are Not a Monolith” statement issued by Latino pastors, scholars, and ministry leaders calling for greater nuance and accountability in how Latino Christians are represented in national media. This week on Militantly Mixed, I'm joined by Noelle Blanco, whom I met at Mixed Asian Day 2025 in San Francisco. Noelle ended up joining our We Are Not a Monolith panel at literally the last possible minute, when she had just stepped off stage from another panel, and we invited her to jump in with us because we loved her whole vibe on the previous panel. With no prep whatsoever and me moderating the panel, she did her thing and just killed it!One of my favorite Noelle stories from the panels at Mixed Asian Day, and this episode comes from her childhood. When she would explain her ethnicity, she thought the answer was “Pork and Cheese and Jalapeño,” because that is what Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino sounded like. I love finding the different ways we, as Mixed kids, try to make sense of our ethnic identities. This episode was recorded back in November, but the last few months have been a little rough on my end. I'm happy to report that now that the ADHD medication that was making me feel completely dead inside is finally out of my system, I'm feeling like myself again and excited to be back working on the show.In this conversation, Noelle and I talk about Mixed Asian identity, belonging, and community, and how events like Mixed Asian Day create space for multiracial people to share their stories and experiences. We also dig into the idea that Mixed people are often expected to fit into neat categories when the reality is far more complicated.Meeting people like Noelle at events like Mixed Asian Day is one of the things I love most about doing this podcast.
