THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta The Purge 2013 (the original) In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity-including murder-becomes legal. The police can't be called. Hospitals suspend help. It's one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin's (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide. In 2014, a political party called the "New Founding Fathers of America" are voted into office following an economic collapse, and pass a law sanctioning the "Purge", an annual event wherein all crime is legal and emergency services are temporarily suspended. By 2022, the United States is said to have become virtually crime-free, with legal unemployment rates having dropped to 1%. James Sandin returns to his home in an affluent Los Angeles gated community to wait out the Purge with his wife Mary and their children, Zoey and Charlie. The family is assured the security system manufactured by James' company will keep them safe, while Zoey meets her boyfriend Henry. As the year's Purge begins, James enables the security system and the family disperses to go about their normal routines. Zoey returns to her room and finds Henry, who had snuck in before the security system was engaged, planning on confronting her father about their relationship. Meanwhile, Charlie watches the security monitors and sees a wounded man calling for help. He temporarily disables the system to allow the man inside, but James races to re-engage the system and holds the man at gunpoint. Henry comes downstairs and points a pistol at James and opens fire, but then James returns fire and mortally wounds Henry. During the chaos, the stranger disappears. Through the surveillance cameras, the family sees a gang of masked, heavily armed people arriving at the front lawn. The leader demands the homeless man, warning that failure to comply will result in an invasion. When Mary asks about the security system, James admits it is incapable of withstanding a determined assault. The family find and capture the stranger to give him to the gang, only to realize that they would not be any better off if they did and choose to defend him and themselves. After the deadline passes, the gang breaks into the house. James fights back and kills several of them before the leader stabs him. Charlie notices the neighbors leaving their homes on the monitors before the neighbors enter and kill the remaining gang members. Mary is ambushed by two of the Purgers and gets restrained, but the neighbors save her. The leader attempts to kill the family, but is killed by Zoey while James dies from his injuries.

The Purge: Election Year is not a good movie, but it is ripe with social commentary. The dystopia film is set in the not so distant future where the New Founding Fathers of America are the dominant political party. But a young newcomer, Senator Charlie Roan is trying to unseat the incumbent to put a stop to government-sanctioned violence. The movie attempts to critique grotesque violence, but ends up just being extremely hypocritical. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It was about time for a prequel. After three chronological entries in The Purge series, we have been flung back in time to see how, exactly, the New Founding Fathers of America were able to launch what they called "the experiment." Gerard McMurray helms The First Purge (2018) in a tonally and narratively compelling direction, elevating the series to new heights. #ThePurge The films present a near-future dystopian America which celebrates an annual national holiday known as the Purge, in which all crimes, including murder, are legal for a 12-hour period. #Purge is an American media franchise centered on a series of dystopian action horror films distributed by Universal Pictures and produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes, mainly created by James DeMonaco. In 2014, following an economic collapse and rising social unrest, a political organization named The New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) is formed and is voted into office. The organization establishes a new totalitarian government and a police state. In 2016, the NFFA devises a plan to help stabilize American society and later in 2017, the 28th Amendment to the U.S Constitution is ratified. weki This amendment establishes a 12-hour event known as "The Purge" which would take place from 7 PM on March 21 to 7 AM on March 22 wherein all crime becomes legal. Before the Purge begins, the Emergency Broadcast System is activated with rules and a prayer saying "Blessed be our New Founding Fathers and America, a nation reborn" before ending with "May God be with you all". The rules for the annual Purge are as follows: Sirens blare throughout the land to signal the start and end of The Purge. All police, fire, and medical emergency services remain unavailable or suspended for the full 12-hour Purge. Government officials of ranking 10+ are granted immunity (revoked in Election Year to legalize the murder of a political opponent). "Classes 1-4" weaponry are permitted Below is how the Emergency Broadcast System announces the Purge' commencement in the first two films: This is not a test. This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge sanctioned by the U.S. Government. Weapons of class 4 and lower have been authorized for use during the Purge. All other weapons are restricted. Government officials of ranking 10 have been granted immunity from the Purge and shall not be harmed. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 continuous hours. The Context of White Supremacy deconstructs James DeMonaco's multi-million dollar franchise, The Purge. University of Texas (Austin) professor Dr. Martin Kevorkian returns to The C.O.W.S. to dissect the films. The author of Color Monitors, Dr. Kevorkian has written about the White Supremacy messaging in films and converesed with our audience repeatidly. We'll turn our attention to DeMonaco's science fiction juggernaut and the three installments released since 2013. The Purge depicts a dystopian future, where ruling Whites (the New Founding Fathers of America) decree that on one day each year, murder and all other crimes are legal for twelve hours. All three movies depict nearly unparalleled scenes of sadistic brutality and White pathology. White Supremacy is flaunted in all three films: a black male is hunted by a White mob in the first film. White goons sporting "White Power" insignias and swastikas prowl the third film - released on the 4th of July weekend this summer. We'll get Dr. Kevorkian's perspective on the timing of these projects and the politics being broadcast by a franchise that suggests the way to solve problems is by killing people. The third installment of THE PURGE franchise is out just in time to totally creep out your 4th of July! THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR stars Frank Grillo as the head of security for a US Senator running for President with an anti-purge platform. Her unpopular stances have made her a target for The Purge founders, The New Founding Fathers, (NFFA) and Grillo must get her through the night safely. Along their travels they meet up with a renegade gang of [also] anti purgers, and wrong place/wrong time good samaritans who come to their aid. The film is written and directed by James DeMonaco who wrote and directed the first two and co-stars Elizabeth Mitchell (LOST), Mykelti Williamson (FOREST GUMP) and Kyle Secor (HOMICIDE). We gave it Justice, mostly for Grillo's hardworking action-star ways (give him more lead roles please!) and the overall entertainment value. Not as terrifying as the second and with some added cheese and bad lines, but it still delivers on fun summer action. 6.5/10 on the Justice & Doom Meter
Martin and Melinda are joined by Victoria to watch The Purge (2013). This film made a big splash the year it came out, but was it because this movie was fun to watch or more fun to talk about? Will the New Founding Fathers declare this a New Cinema Classic, or does this deserve to get tossed in a bonfire during a violent uprising? Let us know what you think.
