20 years ago Platinum Dunes remade The Amityville Horror. Unlike other horror remakes this one if look at fondly. Some would even say it's better than the original film. Do we feel the same? Tune in to see if Monica and I think The Amityville Horror remake is better than the original!
In part two of our deep dive into the *Texas Chainsaw Massacre* franchise, we tackle the series' dramatic rebirth with the 2003 Platinum Dunes remake and it's evolution up to the controversial 2022 Netflix entry. This episode explores how the 2003 remake reinvigorated Leatherface and his twisted family for a new generation, dissecting its grittier tone, visceral gore, and the production team's decision to modernize the franchise while staying true to its roots. We then navigate the often divisive sequels and spin-offs, including *The Beginning* (2006), the puzzling *Texas Chainsaw 3D* (2013), the prequel *Leatherface* (2017), and the polarizing 2022 installment.Expect in-depth discussions about the highs, lows, and wild tonal shifts that define this era of *Chainsaw* lore, as well as how these films balance fan nostalgia with attempts to appeal to modern horror audiences.Plus, we dive into the recurring themes of trauma, family, and the brutal chaos Leatherface brings to his victims.Join us as we dissect what works, what doesn't, and what makes this franchise endure despite its bloody and uneven history. The Platinum Dunes remake came out in 2009 and is considered to be one of the best remakes in the slasher genre. Tony, Jess, and Casey dive into this film and try to figure out what makes it so great.

So... you think you can remake a classic horror movie. That's what Michael Bay thought, anyway, when his production shingle Platinum Dunes embarked on a new adaptation of Jay Anson's tale of mayhem on Long Island. Citizen Kane the 1979 Amityville Horror may not be, but it holds a special place in the hearts of horror fans worldwide. So who's to blame for the mess that is the 2005 version? First (and last) time director Andrew Douglas? Frequently shirtless Ryan Reynolds, miscast as axe-wielding George Lutz? Or screenwriter Scott Kosar, who picks up a surprise nomination this week for the Michael Myers Award? Whatever your take is on this misbegotten footnote in the annals of horror history, we had a blast discussing it with Gretchen McNeil, back for her 5th episode, and the second in our Amityville mini-exploration. Two-time Emmy-nominated actress and producer Sydney Sweeney has become one of the most sought-after talents of her generation, captivating global audiences with her many buzz-worthy, critically acclaimed, and iconic roles. Sweeney can most recently be seen starring opposite Glen Powell in Will Gluck's R-rated romantic comedy ANYONE BUT YOU, which broke box office records for the 2023 holiday season. She also recently made her highly anticipated debut as ‘Julia Carpenter' (aka Spider Woman) in Sony's Marvel universe alongside Dakota Johnson with the release of MADAME WEB. Sweeney will next be seen starring in the psychological horror film IMMACULATE for Black Bear Pictures, which she developed alongside producer David Bernad, following their highly successful collaboration on WHITE LOTUS. Now streaming on MAX, Sweeney's film REALITY marked her international film debut at the 2023 Berlinale Film Festival with the film's world premiere, where she played former US Airforce Translator and whistleblower Reality Winner. She is currently in production filming an upcoming survival thriller ‘EDEN.' Directed by Ron Howard, Sweeney will star in this film alongside Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and Jude Law. Sweeney recently started production on the Apple Original Films' thriller ECHO VALLEY where she will also star opposite Julianne Moore and Domhnall Gleeson. As the standout character ‘Cassie' in HBO's EUPHORIA, Sweeney's exceptional work in Season 2 captured the attention of viewers, earning her a 2022 Emmy nomination for her performance in the category of “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.” Prior to the second season of EUPHORIA, Sydney's name was on everyone's lips due to her turn as the seemingly woke millennial ‘Olivia' who dished out side-eye and microaggressions every chance she had in HBO's THE WHITE LOTUS. The inception of Sweeney's production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, came from the desire to reclaim professional autonomy by identifying and giving wind to projects she finds interesting, challenging, and relevant. Partnering with Jonathan Davino in 2019, Fifty-Fifty Films continues to remain focused on building impactful projects that are inclusive and purposeful. Currently in development as starring vehicles are THE PLAYER'S TABLE with Fifth Season, THE REGISTRATION for Sony Pictures, based on Madison Lawson's novel, with Fuller Media and THE CARETAKER for Universal Pictures, alongside Michael Bay and Brad Fuller for Platinum Dunes.
For Women's History Month and Mother's Day, here in the UK, silence is deafening for a spec script written in an unconventional way, that happened to get picked up by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company.Taking inspiration from silent movies from Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati, as well as horror classics like Jaws, Alien and Alfred Hitchcock's filmography, A Quiet Place started life as an almost dialogue free script, written in 2016.The original script can be found hereJohn Krasinski's involvement came much later, but he was instrumental in getting the project made, and his casting choices would change everything. Not just by his wife Emily Blunt's eventual involvement, but the casting of a young deaf actress, and the inclusion of American Sign Language would make A Quiet Place one of the freshest and most atmospheric new horror films in years... I would love to hear your thoughts on A Quiet Place !CONTACT.... ¡Gracias y feed the cvlt!

This week- two trips into unfamiliar territory in vans that become crime scenes. When Dean, Duncan, DJ Beatroot, and Ian are dropped off along the road to hike through the highlands for a the Duke of Edinburgh Award, they never dreamed they would be hunted by an older couple wearing masks. Soon the boys are in a desperate fight for their lives with only their limited wits and local fauna excrement to save them. Meanwhile, Sargent Morag hunts a notorious thief. A darling of the 2019 South by Southwest Film Festival and debut feature of writer/director Ninian Doff- Get Duked! (aka Boyz in the Wood). It's 1974, for some reason, and a van full of kids are driving through remote and empty backroads they are totally unfamiliar with on their way to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, with front row seats. They decide to pick up a second female wondering the side of the road, probably hoping she will be as friendly as the first one was. Unfortunately, the new pick up is severely traumatized and our leads are too damn thick to not get themselves killed. The first film from Platinum Dunes, the feature debut of prolific music video director Marcus Nispel, and a remake of Craig's favorite horror movie- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003). All that and Kevin shouts from the void, Dave eats pizza, Tyler builds a nu metal instrument, and Craig has a existential crisis. Join us, won't we? Episode 321- Beatroot, Texas

One year to the day since we started our Elm Street restrospective, we're concluding it with our review of the Platinum Dunes remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2010)! We've been teasing our opinions of this movie ever since we reviewed the first one, so we were very excited to finally record this discussion. We had a terrific time reviewing the Elm Street series, and this movie was no exception. We hope everyone enjoys the episode, and as always thanks so much for listening!!
Following the development of the “Friday the 13th” remake, Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes production company announced plans to take on another franchise with a remake of the 1984 classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” The idea behind the remake was taking the “Nightmare” franchise back to its roots as a much scarier film rather than the version that had been duplicated in recent years where antagonist Freddy Krueger was defined by “cracking jokes” and making one-liners before killing his victims. Music video director Samuel Bayer was hired to direct and the vision for the film shifted from a remake to a reimagining with plans to use elements from the original movie but not necessarily copy what Wes Craven had created. Jackie Earle Haley was hired to take on the role of Freddy — a move that original series star Robert Englund supported. On a budget of $35 million dollars, the “Nightmare” remake was supposed to reignite the franchise with the stars of the film already signed on for multiple sequels as Bay attempted to make everyone scared of Freddy Krueger again…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead as part of our ongoing series taking a deep dive into the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, we discuss the 2010 remake and what went wrong with this film….Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell
Our series finally concludes with the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake. We discuss millennial names, sleepy acting (even when it shouldn't be), vengeful ghosts, jump scares, lip melting, prescription drugs, micro naps, & more! A Nightmare on Elm Street is a 2010 American supernatural slasher film directed by Samuel Bayer, and written by Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer. The film stars Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, and Kellan Lutz. Produced by Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes, it is a remake of Wes Craven's 1984 film of the same name, as well as the ninth overall installment of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The film is set in a fictitious town in Ohio and centers around a group of teenagers living on one street who are stalked and murdered in their dreams by a disfigured man named Freddy Krueger. The teenagers discover that they all share a common link from their childhood that makes them targets for Krueger. A Nightmare on Elm Street Official Trailer #1 - (2010) HD

One of the first big budget horror remakes was released in 2003 which starred Jessica Biel & R. After another hearty gap, Platinum Dunes got some pretty people and gimmicky filters together for this CW style retelling of the original. We have many thoughts. This is one of those episodes longer than the movie. So many thoughts.
This week we get together to talk about the most unfairly maligned film in the Chainsaw series. In a franchise filled with high peaks, and low-lows, TCM 3D seems to have few defenders. Why? We make the argument that there needs to be MORE movies where grandmas leave their grandkids palatial mansions that come fully equipped with a family graveyard, a carnival over the backyard fence, and a 300 pound cannibal living in the basement! Maybe it's living through an era where horror can take itself too seriously, but we got our kicks watching Alexandria Daddario shout "Do your thing cuz!" and a tone that pulls back from the grim nihilism of the Platinum Dunes films. Mike and Jess are joined by Andrew from the Dead Letter Movie pod for a fun, loose conversation.
The Purge franchise is one of the most iconic dystopian action horror series of all time and the man behind it, James DeMonaco is not stopping anytime soon.Jame is our guest today and even though we talk a great deal about the various Purge films he's either written or directed, which are all fan favorites, we start off with his most recently released film, This Is The Night, that was digitally released on September 21, 2021, after a prior theater release on Sep 17, 2021.This Is The Night, drama stars Frank Grillo, Lucius Hoyos, Jonah Hauer-King, Bobby Cannavale, and Naomi Watts. It is set in the summer of 1982 Staten Island with the release of Rocky III as its backdrop. The story tells of an average teen who embarks on a quest in his Rocky Balboa-obsessed town that swirls in his family members. Watts and Grillo will play with his parents. His family must confront its greatest challenges and the family realizes that the only way to live is like there's no tomorrow.I have tons of questions for James in this interview, which I am sure you, my tribe will appreciate. I have been a fan of some of his work but clueless he had written other top-ranked films on my list, it came as an exciting shock to discover more that James has written, directed, or produced. Besides screenwriting, directing, and producing projects like the Purge movies, he's also written for TV and gets credit for writing The Negotiator, Staten Island, Jack, and Assault on Precinct 13. As a child of 5 years old, he would beg his more for a pass to watch the 4:30 ABC network movies and would visit the cinema often. At seven years old, he went to see, Apocalypse at the cinema and that changed everything for him. Leaving that theater with the desire to be part of that experience of whatever happened on the screen. Through screenwriting, he landed his first production gig with director Francis Coppola, for the 1996 movie, Jack, starring Robin Williams. The inspiration for The Purge was birthed during James's time living in Paris and Canada. It came mainly, from his relationship against guns even though he had grown up around cops. The experience in Europe and Canada, in general, were the complete opposites he had observed. This was around the time mass shootings in America were on the rise in the early 2000s. Combined with an aftermath dark thought from a road rage incident curious about what it would be like if we all had a day pass, turned into a masterpiece original screenplay. But dressed in a science fiction dystopian world. The Purge: Anarchy - A couple is driving home when their car breaks down just as the Purge commences. Meanwhile, a police sergeant goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it. The five people meet up as they attempt to survive the night in Los Angeles. It was challenging to find someone willing to finance a ‘nihilistic' and ‘un-American movie life The Purge. James and his partners got about fifty rejections because of how dark the script seemed. Until finally with help from Jason Blum who said it was a great fit for his low-budget horror model on his deal with Universal Studios, to be produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes. The studio took a shot at it and the first Purge movie in 2013 albeit on a $3 million budget, grossed $89.3 million. The film starred Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, and Max Burkholder as members of a wealthy family who find themselves endangered by a gang of murderers during the annual Purge, a night during which all crime, including murder, is temporarily legal. The franchise includes The Purge: Anarchy( 2014), The Purge: Election Year (2016), a prequel, The First Purge (2018), The Purge TV series(2018 to 2019), and The Forever Purge (2021).There is a sixth Purge movie in the works. And the franchise has grossed overall over $450 million against a combined production budget of $53 million. We go deep in the weeds on these projects and James's writing process.Enjoy my conversation with James DeMonaco.
Is this going to be one of our most controversial episodes? Possibly. The Michael Bay produced remake is one of the most talked about horror movies of the past twenty years, and it's responsible for the deluge of remakes and reboots that followed over the course of the next decade. For some horror fans, "Platinum Dunes" were fighting words, like someone insulted their mother. Does this movie get lumped in with the less than stellar efforts that followed it? Does it manage to stay consistent and honor the spirit of Tobe Hooper's classic original film while offering up its own unique take? That's what Mike, Nicole, Brian and Rachel are here to talk about tonight.

In the first installment of "February Frights 3D," we're looking at Lionsgate's 2013 attempt to relaunch the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. Following two entries from Platinum Dunes that established a brand new continuity, the 2013 film instead decided to follow the lead of previous sequels and simply make a direct follow-up to Tobe Hooper's 1974 classic original - this time with the added benefit of the 3D gimmick. But would the surprising story decisions of the film leave fans of the franchise feeling "revved up," or would they be begging for a hammer to the head? While not the last theatrical Amityville, it was certainly the last wide release high profile one. The only Platinum Dunes remakes to spawn a second entry both involved cannibals in the desert. This one spawned so much else. Before the movie we discuss the other Platinum Dunes remakes and Ryan Reynolds.
