The creator of “The Purge” franchise, James DeMonaco, has shifted from anarchy to generational divides in his new psychological thriller starring none other than… Pete Davidson! Tune in as we break down “The Home” — from what we've seen many times before (a creepy hospital-like setting), to what was totally unexpected (that insane ending), and all those eye-centric scenes that made Matt squirm.
We can get one thing out of the way right up top: James DeMonaco is from Staten Island. Seeing Rocky Balboa on the big screen as a kid was mind-blowing; seeing Sylvester Stallone take a story of such a familiar kind of guy and make it into an Oscar-winning mega-franchise for the ages was life-altering. While DeMonaco is best known for his stealthily political horror films, his love of Rocky even made it into a coming-of-age project called THIS IS THE NIGHT, set around the release of ROCKY III. He and Jordan get into the importance of seeing a familiar milieu on screen, and get into the motivation behind DeMonaco's current film, THE HOME, a psychological horror movie starring Pete Davidson, set at an eldercare facility. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the new Netflix series HUNTING WIVES. Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun.Need more Feeling Seen? Keep up with the show on Instagram and Bluesky.
Filmmaker James DeMonaco (THE PURGE franchise, THIS IS THE NIGHT) joins Adam and Joe to discuss his career journey and the making of his new feature THE HOME (in theaters now). From growing up in Staten Island with no viable connections to the film industry… to teaching himself how to write scripts armed with only a copy of Syd Field's book SCREENPLAY… to briefly attending NYU film school where he made a friend with a means to securing some financing… to making his first independent film RED which lead to a student Academy Award… to how his script for JACK (co-written with Gary Nadeau) lead to an industry bidding war… to working with cinematic icon Francis Ford Coppola and the brilliant Robin Williams on the project… to writing films like THE NEGOTIATOR, the remake of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and SKINWALKERS before getting the opportunity to direct his screenplay for LITTLE NEW YORK… to creating the worldwide blockbuster franchise THE PURGE and why he and his producing partner Sébastien K. Lemercier have continued to shaped the franchise through five (soon to be SIX) films… to how visiting family members in elder care facilities lead to the idea for THE HOME… to the casting of SNL alum Pete Davidson and the great John Glover in leading roles of the film… to what it was like shooting a film with a cast of elderly people during the tail end of COVID…to learning that every writer needs a “Mad Hungarian” and tons of other anecdotes he's learned throughout his career… this honest conversation about the path of becoming a filmmaker is one that every artist can benefit from.

His upcoming horror film THE HOME, starring fellow Staten Islander Pete Davidson, follows Max, who realizes that the residents and caretakers in the retirement home where he started working at hide sinister secrets. In this interview, we talk about his work on JACK, lessons learned from Francis Ford Coppola, the origin and development of THE PURGE, violence in screenwriting and directing (restraint vs. graphic), lessons from Blumhouse, and much more. “Write your own anxieties. Get into your own psyche. I think if it scares you – like, I'm terrified of guns, and that's where The Purge came from. But here, there were various generational fears and whatnot that led to The Home, Adam's fears and my fears about getting older and our anxiety. So I would say if it's born from your fear, the majority of the audience probably has a similar fear. I think we are communal in that way. Fears are not singular, so I think you should work off your own fears, and on a practical level, if you can keep the budget small, you're in a much better place getting it made. That was key to The Purge getting made, that it was one location,” says James DeMonaco, director and co-writer of the new horror film, The Home. On today's show, we talk with both James DeMonaco and Adam Cantor, co-writers of the new horror film The Home. The Home is about Max (Pete Davidson), a troubled young man, who starts working at a retirement home only to realize its residents and caretakers harbor sinister secrets. As he investigates the building and its forbidden fourth floor, he starts to uncover connections to his own past and upbringing as a foster child. DeMonaco, best known for creating The Purge franchise, and Cantor, an actor-turned-writer, talk about their favorite horror films from the 1970s, the challenge of bringing a 70s vibe to modern horror films, and working with their Staten Island buddy, comedian Pete Davidson and bringing out his intense dramatic performance. DeMonaco also talks about the impact The Purge films have had on our culture. “I grew up watching Romero and Carpenter films and George Miller. I always thought they put great mirrors up to society, and there was always some kind of smuggler's cinema idea, where they were smuggling socio-political themes into the genre's pieces. So sadly, The Purge is reflective of the world we're living in and becoming, I think, more reflective, which is scary. And terrifying. I wish it wasn't, I wish it was a complete fantasy to purge. Unfortunately, it's not right now, and it's seemingly getting worse,” says DeMonaco who weighs in on whether something like The Purge could happen in real life. “I used to say, ‘Absolutely not!' Now, I don't know if I would say that any longer, and that's even scarier to me,” says DeMonaco. To hear more about The Home and the spooky events that h appened on set, listen to the podcast.

Katie and special guest/surrogate sister Christine murder without consequences as they rewatch: The Purge! It's a movie all about how in the future/past (since this takes place in 2022 LOL) all crime is legal one day of the year to help people "Release The Beast" #redbull. When an affluent family's young, possibly future serial killer son, lets in a "Bloody Stranger" during their lockdown, a gang of nepo-babies come in to destroy their trash security systems and reek havoc! This movie asks many ethical questions such as: Would you really let a stranger die on the street if you could instead save them? Would you instead throw your son out onto the street for letting that person in? Would you reenact Scooby-Doo with your family if your home was being invaded and be all split up? And - would you too wear business casual the entire day/night of the Purge!? Seriously why did they do that!? Released in 2013, it was written and directed by James DeMonaco and features Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, and Adelaide Kane.

"The Purge" is a 2013 dystopian horror thriller film written and directed by James DeMonaco. The film is set in a future America where the government has instituted an annual event called "The Purge," which takes place on March 21st and lasts for 12 hours, from 7 PM to 7 AM. During this time, all crime, including murder, becomes legal, and emergency services are suspended. The idea behind The Purge is that it allows society to release its pent-up aggression and cleanse itself of criminal elements. The story primarily focuses on the Sandin family, consisting of James (played by Ethan Hawke), his wife Mary (played by Lena Headey), and their two children, Charlie and Zoey. James sells security systems designed to protect homes during The Purge, and the family appears to be well-prepared for the annual event. However, their sense of security is shattered when their son Charlie lets a wounded stranger, who is being pursued by a group of masked purgers, into their home. As the night unfolds, the Sandin family must defend their home against a group of violent purgers who demand that they release the injured man. The film explores themes of social inequality, the consequences of violence, and the moral dilemmas faced by the characters as they grapple with the brutal reality of The Purge. "The Purge" received mixed to positive reviews from critics and was praised for its unique premise and suspenseful moments. It also spawned several sequels, including "The Purge: Anarchy" (2014), "The Purge: Election Year" (2016), "The First Purge" (2018), and a television series titled "The Purge" (2018-2019). These subsequent installments further explored the concept of The Purge and its societal implications. Overall, "The Purge" is known for its tense and thrilling portrayal of a nightmarish future where chaos reigns for 12 hours, and it has become a notable entry in the horror genre. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/100horrors/message
Believe it or not, it's already been 10 years since the release of James DeMonaco's breakout hit, “The Purge.” The micro-budget horror film would go on to earn a massive box office and devoted fanbase, spawning four sequels and multi-season TV series. And in honor of the film's 10th Anniversary, DeMonaco joins The Playlist Podcast to talk about his 2013 hit and how a fractured country inspired him to make a film about people killing each other for sport. Oh yeah, and he also teases what might come in the future. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

Writer and Director Jeremy Robbins was Story Editor for 2 Seasons of the Blumhouse horror anthology series — The Purge — based on the successful film franchise (grossing $500M+ worldwide) of the same name; he worked closely with James DeMonaco, creator of the franchise, in allowing viewers to explore a time in which all crime is declared legal for a 12 hour period. The show aired on USA Network and Hulu, and has featured actors including Gabriel Chavarria, Lee Allen Tergesen, Derek Luke and William Baldwin through its run. Prior to The Purge, Jeremy wrote and directed the acclaimed short films Newsworthy and Aftermath, both featuring his younger brother Noah Robbins (The Trial of the Chicago 7; Indignation; Miss Sloane; Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), and the latter featuring Will Rogers (Bridge of Spies; A Rainy Day in New York), both in standout performances. He also wrote APEX, the pulse-pounding wilderness thriller about “man, woman and nature” which was featured on The Blacklist in 2021. A BA graduate from Yale, Jeremy returned to Columbia, where he earned his MFA in Film, as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Film. We discuss his family's encouragement for the arts; the seeds which lay the foundation for his desire to attend film school; writing for a major television show; working with Barry Sonnenfeld and Adam McKay; and retaining authenticity as an artist, writer and director.Opening Credits: 1st Contact - Seeds of Life; Closing Credits: HoliznaCC0 - Manic WarLord Mother
The Purge franchise is one of the most iconic dystopian action horror series of all time and the man behind it, James DeMonaco is not stopping anytime soon.Jame is our guest today and even though we talk a great deal about the various Purge films he's either written or directed, which are all fan favorites, we start off with his most recently released film, This Is The Night, that was digitally released on September 21, 2021, after a prior theater release on Sep 17, 2021.This Is The Night, drama stars Frank Grillo, Lucius Hoyos, Jonah Hauer-King, Bobby Cannavale, and Naomi Watts. It is set in the summer of 1982 Staten Island with the release of Rocky III as its backdrop. The story tells of an average teen who embarks on a quest in his Rocky Balboa-obsessed town that swirls in his family members. Watts and Grillo will play with his parents. His family must confront its greatest challenges and the family realizes that the only way to live is like there's no tomorrow.I have tons of questions for James in this interview, which I am sure you, my tribe will appreciate. I have been a fan of some of his work but clueless he had written other top-ranked films on my list, it came as an exciting shock to discover more that James has written, directed, or produced. Besides screenwriting, directing, and producing projects like the Purge movies, he's also written for TV and gets credit for writing The Negotiator, Staten Island, Jack, and Assault on Precinct 13. As a child of 5 years old, he would beg his more for a pass to watch the 4:30 ABC network movies and would visit the cinema often. At seven years old, he went to see, Apocalypse at the cinema and that changed everything for him. Leaving that theater with the desire to be part of that experience of whatever happened on the screen. Through screenwriting, he landed his first production gig with director Francis Coppola, for the 1996 movie, Jack, starring Robin Williams. The inspiration for The Purge was birthed during James's time living in Paris and Canada. It came mainly, from his relationship against guns even though he had grown up around cops. The experience in Europe and Canada, in general, were the complete opposites he had observed. This was around the time mass shootings in America were on the rise in the early 2000s. Combined with an aftermath dark thought from a road rage incident curious about what it would be like if we all had a day pass, turned into a masterpiece original screenplay. But dressed in a science fiction dystopian world. The Purge: Anarchy - A couple is driving home when their car breaks down just as the Purge commences. Meanwhile, a police sergeant goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it. The five people meet up as they attempt to survive the night in Los Angeles. It was challenging to find someone willing to finance a ‘nihilistic' and ‘un-American movie life The Purge. James and his partners got about fifty rejections because of how dark the script seemed. Until finally with help from Jason Blum who said it was a great fit for his low-budget horror model on his deal with Universal Studios, to be produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes. The studio took a shot at it and the first Purge movie in 2013 albeit on a $3 million budget, grossed $89.3 million. The film starred Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, and Max Burkholder as members of a wealthy family who find themselves endangered by a gang of murderers during the annual Purge, a night during which all crime, including murder, is temporarily legal. The franchise includes The Purge: Anarchy( 2014), The Purge: Election Year (2016), a prequel, The First Purge (2018), The Purge TV series(2018 to 2019), and The Forever Purge (2021).There is a sixth Purge movie in the works. And the franchise has grossed overall over $450 million against a combined production budget of $53 million. We go deep in the weeds on these projects and James's writing process.Enjoy my conversation with James DeMonaco.

The next stop on our journey through Latin America is 2005's MADEINUSA. After some reviews, we talk about how this film is itself a disturbing experience for the viewers, to what extent it presents the main character as a ‘femme fatale', and why it works as a complete disruption of the ‘white saviour' myth. Some of this film's ideas are also reminiscent of the film noir (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_noir), particularly at the end. Crowd pleasers Squid Game and Bridgerton could not be further apart in subject matter, but they are currently the two most streamed programmes in Netflix's history. We get under the bonnet and behind the mask of these phenomena by examining their precedents on both the big and small screen, tracing how previous works have covered similar themes in so many different ways. Ellen looks at the death-match films from cinema history that form the DNA of Squid Game, with the help of The Purge creator James DeMonaco, critic Anna Bogutskaya and academic Dr Jinhee Choi. And Mark is joined by screenwriter Andrew Davies and historical consultant Hannah Greig to investigate Bridgerton's self-consciously modern style influences in historical drama, from The Draughtsman's Contract to Sofia Coppola's derided but influential 2006 picture Marie Antoinette. Screenshot is Radio 4's guide through the ever-expanding universe of the moving image. Every episode, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode journey through the main streets and back roads connecting film, television and streaming over the last hundred years. this week's show is a celebration of an occasion that is not merely an important day on the movie calendar but also an acknowledgment of what for some of us could be called a lifestyle. A few of you could care less about the release of the new motion picture, "Forever Purge", the latest installment in the "Purge" franchise, but for those who've thrilled to the many twists and turns this series has taken, it's really brought out something deep within. So we attend "Purge" fan conventions, write "Purge" fan fiction, encourage our employers to observe "Dress Up Like The Movie (Or TV Series) 'Purge' Fridays". Speaking personally, I've seen no fewer than a half dozen relationships go down the tubes because my partners (with all due respect) insisted "It's only a movie" as opposed to, y'know, the prophecy. (I find all of this highly ironic because I know of some philistines reading this are the types who absolutely lose their little minds over anything related to the Star Wars or Harry Potter cinematic universes when neither of those (inferior) franchises explore anything having to do with dressing up like Slipknot and all crime being legal) Anyhow, due to copyright considerations (and an active restraining order against me by series creator James DeMonaco), this episode features no dialogue from the “Purge” films or any conversations with persons involved in the production of such. However, I've attempted to improvise with musical selections for 2 hours + and if you're disappointed, at least you have the opening of “Forever Purge” to look forward to #onlyintheatres
The Nerds prepare and bunker down for The Purge. We take a look at the original movie that started the franchise. The Purge is written and directed by James DeMonaco and stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. The movie's success was enough to turn to greenlight 2 sequels and a prequel. "In an America ravaged by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government sanctions an annual 12-hour period during which all criminal activity -- including murder -- is legal. James Sandin and his family face the ultimate test when an intruder drags the vicious outside world into their home. They struggle to survive the night while trying not to turn into monsters like the ones they are striving to avoid."
