The Purge franchise is one of the most iconic dystopian action horror series of all time and the man behind it, James DeMonaco is not stopping anytime soon.Jame is our guest today and even though we talk a great deal about the various Purge films he's either written or directed, which are all fan favorites, we start off with his most recently released film, This Is The Night, that was digitally released on September 21, 2021, after a prior theater release on Sep 17, 2021.This Is The Night, drama stars Frank Grillo, Lucius Hoyos, Jonah Hauer-King, Bobby Cannavale, and Naomi Watts. It is set in the summer of 1982 Staten Island with the release of Rocky III as its backdrop. The story tells of an average teen who embarks on a quest in his Rocky Balboa-obsessed town that swirls in his family members. Watts and Grillo will play with his parents. His family must confront its greatest challenges and the family realizes that the only way to live is like there's no tomorrow.I have tons of questions for James in this interview, which I am sure you, my tribe will appreciate. I have been a fan of some of his work but clueless he had written other top-ranked films on my list, it came as an exciting shock to discover more that James has written, directed, or produced. Besides screenwriting, directing, and producing projects like the Purge movies,  he's also written for TV and gets credit for writing The Negotiator, Staten Island, Jack, and Assault on Precinct 13.  As a child of 5 years old, he would beg his more for a pass to watch the 4:30 ABC network movies and would visit the cinema often. At seven years old, he went to see, Apocalypse at the cinema and that changed everything for him. Leaving that theater with the desire to be part of that experience of whatever happened on the screen. Through screenwriting, he landed his first production gig with director Francis Coppola, for the 1996 movie, Jack, starring Robin Williams. The inspiration for The Purge was birthed during James's time living in Paris and Canada. It came mainly, from his relationship against guns even though he had grown up around cops. The experience in Europe and Canada, in general, were the complete opposites he had observed. This was around the time mass shootings in America were on the rise in the early 2000s. Combined with an aftermath dark thought from a road rage incident curious about what it would be like if we all had a day pass, turned into a masterpiece original screenplay. But dressed in a science fiction dystopian world. The Purge: Anarchy - A couple is driving home when their car breaks down just as the Purge commences. Meanwhile, a police sergeant goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it. The five people meet up as they attempt to survive the night in Los Angeles. It was challenging to find someone willing to finance a ‘nihilistic' and ‘un-American movie life The Purge. James and his partners got about fifty rejections because of how dark the script seemed.   Until finally with help from Jason Blum who said it was a great fit for his low-budget horror model on his deal with Universal Studios, to be produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes. The studio took a shot at it and the first Purge movie in 2013 albeit on a $3 million budget, grossed $89.3 million. The film starred Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, and Max Burkholder as members of a wealthy family who find themselves endangered by a gang of murderers during the annual Purge, a night during which all crime, including murder, is temporarily legal. The franchise includes The Purge: Anarchy( 2014), The Purge: Election Year (2016), a prequel, The First Purge (2018), The Purge TV series(2018 to 2019), and The Forever Purge (2021).There is a sixth Purge movie in the works. And the franchise has grossed overall over $450 million against a combined production budget of $53 million. We go deep in the weeds on these projects and James's writing process.Enjoy my conversation with James DeMonaco.

Some spooky classics to get you in the holiday mood, read for you by people who know what it means to spread fear... Dinah Manoff (Maggie Peterson AKA Chucky's first victim in Child's Play) reads Edgar Allan Poe's Tell-Tale Heart, Dylan Arnold (Cameron Elam AKA The Boyfriend in 2018's Halloween) reads Poe's The Raven, And Jim Anderson reads The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. An actor, playwright, coach, and teacher, Dinah’s extensive Broadway credits include I Ought to Be in Pictures (Theater World and Tony Award as Best Featured Actress), Leader of the Pack, Alfred and Victoria, Kingdom of Earth, Gifted Children, and Telegrams From Heaven (Best Director of the Year and playwright). On TV, she was a series regular on Soap, and is best known for her portrayal “Carol Weston,” the character she played for seven years on Empty Nest. She has also appeared in Maid For Each Other (playwright) and the acclaimed ABC family series State of Grace (Jewish Image Award). As a TV director, she has helmed episodes of Sabrina, Movie Stars, Brothers, and numerous episodes of Empty Nest. Film credits include Grease, Ordinary People, Bloodhounds of Broadway, Child’s Play, Staying Together, Backfire, I Ought to Be in Pictures, Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael, and the independent film, Bart Got a Room. When Dylan Arnold was growing up on Bainbridge Island he often said he would live at BPA if he could. And he almost did. From the ages of eight to fifteen he enrolled in almost every theatre class, and appeared in numerous main stage productions. His dedication to acting took him to Idyllwild Arts Academy for high school, and then to the University of North Carolina School for the Arts where he earned his BFA in Drama. Dylan is now a working actor in L.A. and is involved in film, television, and occasionally theatre. Some of his film & TV credits include: Laggies; the ABC miniseries, When We Rise; Mudbound; S.W.A.T.; Halloween & Halloween Kills; Nashville; The Purge TV series; The After Series; and Hulu’s Into the Dark. He also appeared on stage in Good Boys at the Pasadena Playhouse. Dylan would like to give a huge thank you to the entire BPA family for providing a safe, loving environment for him to discover his passion. As you might imagine, there are tons of Jim Andersons in the world. For professional purposes, Jim is James E. Anderson III, but he wants you to know, you can call him Jimmah. Jim lives in the Los Angeles area - his hometown - to which he relocated in 2018 to pursue training, inspiration and employment in the world of acting. He has worked in commercials, independent features, shorts and student films and, most recently, was the voice of the Narrator in the BPA production of “B.I. P.I.” In the age of quarantine, theatres are dark, casting offices are closed and Hollywood is moribund. Writing stories, plays and the obligatory LA pursuit, writing a screenplay, along with creating and self- taping character monologues have kept me in the game. I’m most grateful to BPA, Miranda Feldtman and Liz Ellis for bringing me on board for this project. Blumhouse's INTO THE DARK Directors, Alston & Julius Ramsay [Episode 42]

The Nick Taylor Horror Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2020 37:45

Alston & Julius Ramsay are two brothers and a writer/director duo. The Ramsay brothers made their feature debut with Midnighters, a high octane indie thriller released by IFC Midnight in 2017. Their most recent feature is The Current Occupant is the latest entry in Blumhouse's Into the Dark series on Hulu. For the uninitiated, Into the Dark is a Black Mirror-like series of self-contained feature horror films produced by Blumhouse where each episode thematically represents a different holiday.  The Current Occupant was themed around Independence Day and tells the story of a man committed to an asylum who believes himself to be the president of the United States. The Current Occupant is a fascinating and highly entertaining institutional horror thriller and is available on HULU today! The Ramsays have a varied and fascinating background: Alston, was a former speechwriter for multiple prominent political figures like Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, General David Petraeus, and Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. While Julius edited for multiple TV shows including Battlestar Galactica and has directed for Blumhouse's The Purge TV series and multiple episodes of The Walking Dead.  The Ramsays were a whole bunch of fun to talk to and their latest feature, The Current Occupant, is now streaming on HULU. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation Julius & Alston Ramsay: Move forward as if. Alston mentioned a golden production tactic someone gave him which was to put a hypothetical date on the calendar for principle photography and simply move forward as if that's when you will begin shooting. When making independent movies, there are so many variables, so many that most directors get overwhelmed and feel the need for everything to be figured out before they can even begin principle photography. What few people tell you is that the best way to do this is to work the other way around. Come up with your ideal date, and then back all of your production plans into it. There's real brilliance to this idea, because it not only psychologically orients you towards shooting, which is very powerful in and of itself, but this tactic makes your project sound more real to the producers you're pitching because you have an actual date. So pick a date and mark it on your calendar - even if you have to reschedule, it will be a starting point that can give you the momentum you need.    There's horror all around you, take notice. Alston spent a lot of time working in politics as a speechwriter, and because of that, brought a breadth of perspective and experience into The Current Occupant. His work history gave the movie an authenticity because it was partially based on his personal experiences which is where some very rich horror concepts can come from.  If you're an aspiring filmmaker who has a non-film related day job, take heart because the idea for your movie might be right in front of you. Waiting tables? It's been a while since there was a good restaurant horror movie. Working in an office? Take a look at Belko Experiment, American Psycho, Mayhem, and technically Cabin in the Woods. Don't discount your current experiences as time wasted if you're not making movies yet - dig deep into these experiences because they just may have the germ of a great horror concept in them.    Collaborate with a sibling, or someone like a sibling. I have spoken to multiple filmmaking duos and they are often childhood friends or siblings. When picking collaborators, it's critical to remember that you will inevitably get into conflict, therefore, having a strong rapport, and the capacity to fight and rapidly recover is mission critical. Where it may not always be realistic to pick a sibling to make a movie with, as Alston said, pick someone who you would want in your foxhole, because making a movie is going to war. Therefore, it's important to be on board with someone who will have your back when the going gets tough, because it inevitably does throughout the course of indie filmmaking. So pick your production partners accordingly because when the chips are down you'll need someone who cares.    ----- Produced by Simpler Media

Gigi Guerrero is a Mexican-Canadian Filmmaker, Writer and Actress. She started her career making shorts including the Mexican wrestler gorefest, Luchagore which is now on Shudder. Gigi made her feature debut with the scathingly confrontational social commentary feature Culture Shock for Blumhouse as a part of their Into the Dark series, now streaming on Hulu. Today, Gigi is directing episodes of The Purge TV series, also for Blumhouse, and is attached to a new feature project about the Mexican religious icon, Santa Muerte. She is one of the most exciting emerging new voices in horror and I enjoyed talking to her about how she got started, her favorite Mexican horror movies, and as always, her recommended strategies for aspiring directors.  Here without further are Gigi Saul Guerrero's tips for aspiring horror filmmakers:.   "Shorts are the shit.” A lot of filmmakers praise the value of shorts for their priceless educational value. Gigi, who's done 18 shorts, claims that they are best way to learn the craft of filmmaking fast. As simple as it may seem, each short incrementally gets you more familiar with the craft of filmmaking and it does this on a condensed timeline. Furthermore, shorts are also a way for first-time directors to purge their mistakes and amateur habits in a low risk environment which is important too. Doing shorts also offers you the opportunity to build relationships with a crew that you can move onto bigger projects with.   Finish what you start. Gigi mentions that the caveat to the importance of shorts, is the importance having enough discipline to finish them. Frequently filmmakers have ‘multiple projects in varying stages of production' but nothing to their name that is done. This is not great for your career, because people need to see evidence that you can finish something. Through finishing her 18 shorts Gigi learned invaluable lessons about filmmaking while demonstrating her style, voice, vision, and ability to finish what she started. Now she's working with Blumhouse.   Go with your gut. TV sets are notoriously grueling production experiences because of their breakneck pace and relentless shooting schedules. But a lot of producers and directors who have worked on TV sets, credit the experience with giving them a fast-acting production rhythm which required them to have more trust in their own intuition since there is next to no room for second guessing anything on such a timeline. Gigi's work on The Purge taught her just this and she credits is as a very valuable experience for her as a director.     SHOW NOTES Gigi's Recommended Mexican Horror Movies    Atros Alu carna We are the Flesh   Books Save the Cat, by Blake Snyder Rebel without a Crew, by Robert Rodriguez

Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. In this episode we’re talking about 1986’s From Beyond and 1995’s Castle Freak, and we were joined by Devin Boudreaux of Boise straight edge outfit Rejection Pact First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by briefly discussing H.P. Lovecraft’s impact on horror and what we’ve done lately involving horror. Devin talks about seeing Blood Harvest for the first time, completing his Hammer horror Christopher Lee collection the Blu Ray of Scars Of Dracula, and watching the Purge TV series. Liam talks attending the recent Reel Weird Weekend event at Mahoning Drive and seeing Remote Control and Videodrome and seeing Ready Or Not with Justin, who also talks about watching the second season of AMC’s The Terror, beginning Netflix’s Mindhunter, the trailers for The Lighthouse and Little Monsters, and seeing IT: Chapter Two, the review of which you can read here. Discussion starts with From Beyond. We give a brief outline of the film, highlighting the fact that this is the second time Stuart Gordon has worked on a Lovecraft adaption with both Jeffery Combs and Barbara Crampton. We each give our backgrounds on the film and how we discovered it. The look of the film, including the color palate and claustrophic set design is discussed in how it echoes Lovecraft’s own style of storytelling. Devin makes the comparison how the film was later echoed thematically by The Matrix. The sexuality of the film is discussed, in that the Praetorious character is portrayed as a seething ball of sensuality. We touch upon how the film lacks the touch of kitsch that Re-Animator had, as well as being more gruesome and grisly than Gordon’s prior adaption of Lovecraft. Ken Foree as the audience surrogate is touched upon, as he is the only purely good character throughout the entire movie. Next up is Castle Freak. We begin by discussing the origins of the movie, in which Charles Band made a poster for the movie first and then hired Stuart Gordon to make a movie based around the poster. We give a brief outline of the film and Justin agonizes over not knowing where Charles Band got the money to buy a castle. Justin talks about how the movie, despite being based on a Lovecraft story, actually inject into the movie a common theme in Lovecraft that wasn’t present in the source material. Devin talks about how this was his first viewing of the movie and how it didn’t quite live up to his expectations based on the posters he’d seen at the video store as a kid. Liam discusses about how the movie, despite clearly being shot only to take advantage of a creepy setting, actually works. The lack of character development is touched upon as is the overall shortage of sympathetic characters. We conclude by discussing the “cheapness” of how the film looks. First and foremost, thank you to Devin for taking the time to talk spooky movies with us. You can and should check out his band on IG at @rejectionpact. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you! Thanks always to Justin Miller,

The Joy of Geek Podcast, Episode 68: Ant-Man and The Wasp Review On this episode of The Joy of Geek Podcast, we (Rich and Kevin) review Ant-Man and The Wasp, the newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly and directed by Peyton Reed. Ant-Man and the Wasp actually takes place before the events of this past summer's Avengers: Infinity War, and its stylish brand of action-comedy offers a welcome reprieve from that film's brutal intensity. We weigh in on all aspects of the film, including the cast of characters, overall narrative, action setpieces, humor and more, and discuss how it compares to its predecessor - 2015's Ant-Man - as well as the rest of the MCU. Also on this episode, we discuss some recent news, including: the multiple new Joker films planned for the DCEU, the announcement of a standalone Black Widow film, Steve Ditko, the “Wedding Issue” charade of Batman 50, The Purge TV show, and more. And no episode of the podcast would be complete without a rundown of what we've been watching and reading lately, including: Southern Bastards Vol. 4, Doctor Strange by Donny Cates, Batman: White Knight, The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring, HBO's Sharp Objects, and Take-Two on ABC, to name a few. Wow it's been a awhile! Mike has returned from his trip to Spain and, surprisingly, suffered no threats from masked individuals wielding chainsaws while on vacation. He did however encounter an unholy amount of stairs, but that is for another time...  We, The Horror Junkies, are back this week and since summer is approaching, we thought it would be an excellent idea to dive into the summer theatrical releases and give our predictions. Will we buy it or will we sell it? The summer for average people is a time for lounging, swimming, and summer flings, but for the horror world, its a time for blood thirsty slashers, unsuspecting campers, and all the things that go bump in the night. Below we have created a list of the Horror movies coming out this summer. May 19 - Alien Covenant RT = 77% Buy June 9 - It Comes At Night RT = 70-85% Buy  June 16 - 47 Meters Down  RT=20-40%  Sell  June 30 - Amityville : The Awakening RT= 10-30 Sell July 14 - Wish Upon RT= 40-60 Half and half  August 4 - The Dark tower RT= 20-70 Buy  August 11 - Annabelle Creation RT= 1- 70 Sell  August 25 - Polaroid RT= 20-50 Sell   In the horror news room Patrick talked about how The Purge TV series will document the other 364 days of the year. It will be very interesting to see how everyone prepares for the day of death. Ghosted released a trailer which goes from normal to paranormal very quickly. Also, we are getting a Vampire Found Footage film called They Live Among Us, and the trailer documents a "Vampire Hive". The most shocking news is that we are getting a continuation of the Michael Myers story line from David Gordon and Danny McBride.   We decided to allow Angel to get crazy and let him discuss one of his conspiracy theories on the show and he brought up Nephilims, which are giant people, that are apparently the offspring of "Sons of Gods" and the "Daughters of Men". Things got really weird during this new segment, but the decision rests with you, the listeners... Do giant people exist?   Finally, we go to the most anticipated segment on our show: Versus. This week we had every Horror fans dream battle; Jason Voorhees against Michael Myers. The Twitter poll put Jason in the lead with 68% and poor Michael with a whomping 36%. It's not a shocker that Jason has the advantage because of his brute like appearance, but Michael brings a sense of stealth to the battle. The Horror Junkies discussed it and we came to a conclusion. If this was a face to face battle, Jason would win due, ultimately, to his reach with his weapon. Michael Myers uses a kitchen knife and would have to get up close and personal, whereas Jason can just hack and slash from a distance.   Stay tuned for next week's episode, where we discuss the Alien Franchise and review Alien: Covenant. And as always Stay Weird!! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/horrorjunkiespodcasts/support
