Rockd Rnd 13 Its Still Macho Time!Mark Warren attributes his travels around the world to Boxing, no doubt about that! In a sport that throws up some of the greatest stories of triumph over extreme adversity, the same sport that portrays sometimes brutal tragic endings to some of its biggest stars. It’s the 21st of July 2000 Phoenix Arizona, a night when the stupendously talented Kostya Tszyu steps into the ring at The Veterans Memorial Coliseum against an absolute boxing superstar trying to rewind the clock, Hall Of Famer, Julio Caesar Chavez. On the same card, Hector Comacho Junior faces off with Phillip Holiday. Mark strikes up a conversation and a chat with this son of a gun and the rest is history. Now in 2021 all these years later, Jay Jay Roca and Warren chat to Hector Comacho Junior. Comacho’s honesty, his journey so far, nothing short of amazing. In RocKD Round 13 there’s lesson for everyone as we chat boxing and life and we talk the love between a father and son.Honesty. Vulnerability. Truth. That’s what you can expect when you watch the Showtime Sports documentary Macho: The Hector Camacho Story The documentary debuted just two weeks after the eighth anniversary of Camacho’s fatal shooting in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. While boxing is the backdrop for this documentary, it’s not a boxing movie. The story delves deep into the psyche and tormented life of one of boxing’s greats, told through the eyes of the people that knew him intimately and luminaries in the sport that were present during Camacho’s rise.Hector “Macho” Camacho is an American original. From his humble beginnings in Spanish Harlem, to fighting in the streets, to New York Golden Gloves champion, to his rise in the boxing world as a three weight-division world champion, and his lifelong struggle with drugs, the Puerto Rican icon lived his life in the moment and on his terms. The consummate performer, to this day, there has never been another boxer with the flair, showmanship, authenticity and charisma that Camacho introduced to the sport. Many have tried to emulate Camacho, but this documentary illustrates why he was one of a kind. - Source Peter Kahn SportsMoneyYou will be gripped by RocKD Rnd 13 Its Still Macho Time!

We also discussed his current roster of fighters including Joe Smith and Carlos Takam, the difficulties of putting on club shows in the time of COVID and Joe’s attempt at organizing the sport with the Boxing Promoters Association. It was a great conversation. Hope you enjoy it.

My good friend and Former heavyweight boxing champion Lou Savarese joins me this week on The Midlife Male Podcast. Lou has recently opened his second boxing gym, Saverese Fight Fit, in West University Place, Houston Texas. It’s a high end boutique fitness studio that centers around boxing as a workout and getting that “Fight Fit” body. Boxing for fitness is in the midst of a major push and growing in popularity across the country and we get into detail about this on the show. It’s also a compare/contrast to his other gym in downtown Houston which is much more of a traditional boxing gym and home to many pro and amateur fighters and it was great to get Lou’s insight on both. He’s one of those rare guys that is both a boxing purist and also just as much at home and comfortable coaching a class full of West U Mom’s or a kid’s class…Lou really loves kids. Savarese, originally from New York, won two New York Golden Gloves championships during his amateur career, and turned professional in 1989. His overall boxing record was 46 wins and 7 losses, with fights against popular boxers such as George Foreman and Mike Tyson. He fought everybody… Bowe, Holyfield, Buster Douglas, Ruiz…The list just goes on. He’s a gentle giant at 6’5 250, family man, husband, father, poet, amateur comedian (very amateur…) and all around great guy. This one is super off the cuff as we’re friends and we tend to just go off on a bunch of tangents but the common thread throughout is that Lou has a heart of gold and I was touched by his relationship with his father, the love that he has for his wife and family, the perseverance and tenacity that he’s shown outside of the ring even more than his time in it and that he’s still a gym rat who feeds off the energy of training and being around people.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Biggest Loser Trainer Cara Castronuova. Neil will interview Cara to find out about her boxing career, The Biggest Loser experience, and her foundation.   A two-time Golden Gloves winner and certified trainer once ranked nationally by USA Boxing, Cara Castronuova is popularly known as one of the newest trainers on The Biggest Loser. Castronuova was born and raised in Elmont, New York, with three younger brothers. She began boxing at the age of five in the family garage with her father, a former Marine. She also wrestled in high school and in college. She graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. She began her boxing career as a youth boxing trainer. Soon, she started entering local bouts, winning her first fight in 2002 at the NY Empire State Games in Syracuse. She also was a volunteer for a government-funded program designed to teach troubled youth the virtues of boxing and keep them off the streets. Later, while working as a personal fitness and boxing trainer at popular sports clubs in the New York City area, like Chelsea Piers and Gleason's Boxing Gym, she used fighting and boxing to encourage clients to “find their warrior within.” While continuing to train clients, Castronuova kept boxing competitively, winning a pair of “Silver Gloves” in 2004, the second-place prize in the Golden Gloves competition. Determined to redeem herself, Castronuova came back one year later and won her first New York Golden Gloves championship at Madison Square Garden in 2005 in front of a televised, capacity crowd.
