In this special bonus episode, we return to the shadowy corners of Gotham to unpack The Penguin — the gritty, character-driven follow-up to The Batman. Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot is a study in power, loyalty, and moral decay — and in this breakdown, I explore five key writing lessons from the series: · How ambition reshapes identity · How setting becomes a mirror of conscience · The art of sharp, subtext-heavy dialogue · The burden of legacy and validation · And why moral ambiguity keeps audiences hooked Whether you're a screenwriter, storyteller, or just a fan of dark, character-based drama, this episode dives deep into how The Penguin turns crime and chaos into masterclass storytelling.

Welcome to episode 293 of the Spun Today Podcast, hosted by Tony Ortiz—the show where writing is the anchor, but the content knows no bounds. In this episode, Tony dives into the creative heart of John Leguizamo's latest Off-Broadway ensemble play, "The Other Americans," unpacking the storytelling, set design, and family dynamics that make the work both culturally specific and emotionally universal. Through the lens of writing, he explores how ambition and repressed trauma can become the real antagonists in a story, and shares actionable takeaways for fellow writers inspired to infuse their own work with personal and generational struggles. But that's just the beginning: Tony also offers insights into New York City's upcoming mayoral election—breaking down recent debates, highlighting the importance of character in leadership, and reflecting on bold policy proposals aimed at housing, education, and community uplift. And, as always, the episode includes a dose of inspiration with the "Goats Doing Goat Shit" segment, honoring recording artist and writer Kwame for his creative perseverance and business acumen. Whether you're here for creative motivation, political commentary, or just great storytelling, this episode promises plenty of fuel for your writing journey. Stick around for practical tips, universal truths, and the signature Spun Today blend of intellect, heart, and creative hustle. O lume a bărbaților.

Opinie: Ce vrea Sorin Grindeanu?

On today's episode of Spun Today, host Tony Ortiz sits down with the powerhouse creative duo Blarime ‘Blu' Topalli and Peter Stass—veteran writers, filmmakers, and the minds behind the atmospheric new horror podcast, The Night Visitor. Together, they dive deep into the art of collaboration, exploring how blending backgrounds in gothic fiction, comedy, screenwriting, and visual effects leads to stories that both thrill and provoke thought. Blu brings her experience from working on iconic projects like Titanic and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, along with her love of gothic literature and psychological horror. Peter, meanwhile, draws on a rich foundation in comic book art, screenwriting, and his unique ability to straddle the worlds of humor and terror. In this conversation, they open up about their creative process, the magic of partnership without ego, and why the best horror uncovers truths about ourselves—not just our fears. Whether you're a writer, creator, or simply love a good story, this is an episode about the craft of storytelling, the power of cathartic genres like horror and comedy, and how chasing creative risk—rather than playing it safe—can lead to truly original work. Stay tuned for inspiration, behind-the-scenes stories, and a masterclass in creative chemistry. The Spun Today Podcast is a Podcast that is anchored in Writing, but unlimited in scope. Today, we are honored to have a plethora of voices sharing their firsthand experiences, each providing a unique lens on that tragic day. We'll hear from Elaine Almonte, who reflects on the haunting silence of New York City post-9/11, and Janet Velez, who processes her emotions through poetry and faith. Jacey Pascasio recounts the classroom panic and subsequent days filled with fear and uncertainty, while Tony Ortiz examines how these events shaped a generation and altered the cultural landscape forever. Zoila Ortiz recounts being in high school during the attacks while Yudy Azurdia recounts the start to a typical day. Tony's father reminisces on witnessing the building of the Twin Towers when he first came to the country and sadly seeing them be knocked down. Join us as we explore not only the immediate reactions and long-term impacts of 9/11, but also how these harrowing experiences, foster resilience, and inspire a collective resolve to remember and rebuild. This week on Page 7, Jackie and MJ are joined by Amber Nelson of The Brighter Side, SPUN and HGX2 to goss' 'bout the various C words, Amber is lucky enough to hear the final verdict on the Grand Tome of Goop, and it's that she sucks and is the reason we have a Wormlord holding power in the White House as well as why Erewhon is able to overcharge for crystal woo strawberries. People are STILL talkin' about Sophie Turner daring to do anything while the Jonas Brothers are on tour, Jackie is tested as she is granted a choice between a rumored pillow lipped owner of a podcast network and a big bag o' lumps. Hilaria Baldwin continues to surely damage her family and is doin' a podcast with her 11 year old daughter to be prove kids and parents CAN BE FRIENDS! MJ and Jackie respond to fans, and apologize for their anti-Kelce rhetoric but Amber ain't fallin' for their masculine charm, Halle Berry's ex from far too long ago said on a dumb podcast that she didn't cook, clean or raise kids 'cause he's YUCK and she subtly fired back. Then it's onto a LIST of celebrities who spoke candidly about their extremely odd upbringings, then it's onto the Blindzz, and finally a competition fueled Jackie's Snackies from 1:09:21.910 (with an MJ's Minute Munchies at 1:18:34.871) til 1:21:34.000. Fungal networks in the soil are arguably the basis of much of life on Earth, but they're understudied and underappreciated in the conservation world. Scientists at the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN) are trying to fix that. They just unveiled a global map of mycorrhizal fungal networks, which highlights how widespread they are and how little protection they have. Host Flora Lichtman talks with two of the SPUN mapmakers, Adriana Corrales and Michael Van Nuland, about the importance of fungal networks and why they need more protection.Guests: Dr. Adriana Corrales is a forest ecologist and scientist with the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks. She's based in Bogotá, Colombia.Dr. Michael Van Nuland is an ecologist and scientist with the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks. Welcome back to the Spun Today podcast! In this episode, Tony Ortiz dives deep into the creative process, taking you behind the scenes of his own writing journey. This is a special “free writing session” episode, where Tony shares his candid writing stats—celebrating the progress, confronting the setbacks, and reflecting on what it really takes to pursue your creative goals. Tony opens up about the challenges of working on his second novel, the importance of letting go of perfectionism, and the power of the so-called “zero-th draft” approach, inspired by N.K. Jemisin's masterclass on writing. You'll hear about his ongoing project of translating his book "Make Way for You" into Spanish with a little help from AI, and how tracking writing habits can be both humbling and motivating. This episode also highlights a practical writing tip from Naomi Kanakia, explores key takeaways from his recent read—Ta-Nehisi Coates' "Between the World and Me"—and offers concrete strategies for building worlds and characters in your own fiction. As always, Tony wraps up with an honest, unfiltered free writing piece from his personal notebooks, inviting you to reflect on missed opportunities and the importance of showing up for your craft. In Podcast Ep. 145, we dive into the stark transformation of the Democratic Party since the 1990s, with a monologue exposing how Democrats have abandoned the middle class for an elite-driven agenda. We analyze the robust Q2 GDP growth, debunking the doom-and-gloom narratives pushed by figures like Chuck Schumer and Amy Klobuchar. Next, we uncover the anti-Trump firing of April Doss at the NSA. We then tackle Hamas propaganda, spotlighting how outlets like The New York Times and BBC once again falsely portray Israel as starving children. Finally, we explore the irony of leftists comparing Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ad to eugenics, while supporting Planned Parenthood, founded by a founder of the eugenics movement, Margaret Sanger. This week on Dopey! Dave returns from vacation and rants about Instagram deleting and reinstating the Dopey page. He shouts out the Dopey Nation warriors who helped get it back, including Justin Cambria and the mysterious Sour Linus from Meta. Dave reads listener emails about Quaker Oat Squares and sketchy pink drugs in the UK, then plays a voicemail from Jake in Oregon who paid $400 for what turned out to be a jar of honey and turned it into a dorm room cookie hustle. Then, a massive deep-dive with Spun writer and speed enthusiast Will De Los Santos. Will shares his life story: being the child of a statutory rape, watching his stepfather survive a gunshot suicide attempt, freebasing coke with his half-brothers, and falling into crank addiction while making a UCLA film school reel. He explains how crank fueled his creativity and led to writing Spun, how he got high in Jason Schwartzman's trailer, and how Bob Dylan lit his cigarette outside a Santa Monica boxing gym. The rotation of our planet tells you when to wake up, and Earth's orbit around the Sun is the reason why some of us dig out a jumper for half the year and a t-shirt for the rest. But what if that all changed? That's exactly what 8-year-old Geronimo in Ecuador wants to know. He and his dad, Fabian, have got themselves dizzy trying to figure out what would happen if the Earth stopped spinning, or better yet, started spinning in the opposite direction. Would everyone fly off into space? Would school be at night? Eager for answers, they decided to ask CrowdScience. Presenter Anand Jagatia embarks on an interstellar journey, blasting off with the celestial origins of spin itself. Astronomer Amy Bonsor from the University of Cambridge in the UK explains how Earth's rotation began, with collapsing clouds of gas, planetary pile-ups and crushing gravitational force. At Keele Observatory, things get apocalyptic. Anand meets astronomer Jacco van Loon, who explains what would happen if Geronimo somehow waved a magic wand and brought Earth's rotation to a halt. With months of unbroken daylight or darkness, devastating storms and even the loss of the Earth's magnetic shield, it's like the script of a disaster movie. Wave that magic wand again and we imagine a world where the Earth not only stops... but starts spinning the other way. Meteorologist Joao Basso from the University of Leipzig in Germany walks us through a mind-bending 2018 study that tells us the surprising things that would happen to the global climate. Presenter: Anand Jagatia Producer: Harrison Lewis Series Producer: Ben Motley

Welcome to Episode 286 of the Spun Today Podcast, the show anchored in writing but truly unlimited in its scope. I'm your host, Tony Ortiz, and today we're diving into something both personal and nostalgic: a throwback tribute episode to my good friend and Spun Today alum, Pablo Mosquera Jr. In this heartfelt installment, we revisit one of our annual beach day recordings—this one taking place on Coney Island during that odd window in the summer of 2020, right in the midst of the COVID pandemic. Pablo and I reflect on everything from the challenges and isolation of lockdown, the mental health impact of working from home, and our predictions about the ever-evolving work landscape, to our perennial struggles getting to Governor's Island for a bike ride and, of course, our shared love of breaking the monotony with a little weekday hooky at the beach. Expect a conversation that ranges far and wide, just like the show itself. We cover road trips, favorite drinks, and the transformative power of routine escapes—plus the creative, life-affirming benefits of unplugging from work and leaning into tradition, even during uncertain times. There's even a story about a real-life lifeguard rescue and a heap of pop culture moments, from The Sopranos to Patrick Swayze classics, all through the unique lens of creativity, inspiration, and the everyday writer's perspective. So whether you're here for the writing talk, the laughs, or some much-needed motivation, this episode invites you to reminisce, recharge, and most of all, keep spinning creativity into your life—no matter what the world throws your way. On a smoky new episode of HOW DO YOU DO, FELLOW KIDS? we're slamming java and puffing darts with Jim Jarmusch in the all-star black and white anthology film COFFEE AND CIGARETTES. Welcome to Episode 283 of the Spun Today podcast—the only podcast anchored in writing, but unlimited in scope. I'm your host, Tony Ortiz, and in this deeply personal and heartfelt episode, I invite you to join me as I honor the memory of my dear friend and Spun Today alumni, Pablo Mosquera Jr., who tragically passed away earlier this year. This episode is a special re-release of one of my favorite beachside conversations with Pablo, originally recorded on a traditional day off in Coney Island—a ritual we created to escape the grind, share stories, and reflect on life while soaking up the summer sun. It's an episode filled with laughter, nostalgia, and the kind of meaningful storytelling that makes the Spun Today podcast what it is. Throughout this episode, I touch on everything from cherished friendship catchphrases and cycling marathons, to our first jobs and the profound impact travel can have on creativity and perspective. We reminisce about coming-of-age moments, family reunions, and the small rituals that inspire us. As you listen, I hope you'll appreciate the raw emotion and candid storytelling as much as I did revisiting it. Whether you're tuning in as a writer looking for inspiration, or as someone seeking comfort in community, this episode is a reminder to cherish every moment, tell your stories, and put pen to paper while you still can. So pull up a chair (or a spot on the sand), and get ready for an episode that's as much a tribute as it is a celebration of creative living. Rest in peace, Pablo—you are missed, and your story lives on through the words and memories we share. Let's get into it.
