S6 E9: Athlete-Centered Skating w/Garrett LucashWe had the honor of sitting down with competitive figure skating coach, Garrett Lucash, to talk about his athlete-centered approach to coaching figure skaters. Garrett is a former competitive figure skater himself, with countless accolades as one of the best skaters in the world during his prime (see his bio). However, Garrett's meaningful journey extends well beyond his medals and outward accomplishments. He has paved a new way of coaching in competitive figure skating, known as ‘athlete-centered skating'. His unique approach aims to support athletes' long-term growth and development as athletes and as humans in a sustainable and empowering way. His approach is based upon aspects of sport science, psychology, and education. This episode is filled with a depth and breadth of stories, wisdom, and insights that coaches can integrate into their day to day interactions with athletes.Garrett Lucash is a retired competitive figure skater with accolades ranging from being ranked 12 in the world, being a 3-time US World Team Member (and 3-time Junior World Team Member), and a 2-time Olympic Team Alternate. His passion for the sport did not end once his competitive career ended; no, Garrett has gone on to coach competitive skaters since then for over 20 years. Garrett has won numerous coaching awards for his innovative ways of using sport science and psychology in his coaching, most recently earning the US Figure Skating 2023 Doc Counsilman Science and Technology Award. This award is given to the best coaches in all Olympic Sports. Garrett is a Team USA Coach; he is a member of the US Figure Skating Sport Science and Medicine Committee; he is Chair of the Professional Skaters Association Sport Science Committee where he creates curriculum for coaches continuing education; and he recently published a book titled “A Constraints-led Approach to Figure Skating”, published in 2022 by Routledge. Following his time in Boston at the Skating Club of Boston, Garrett brought his Athlete Centered Center program to the Detroit Skating Club where he is the Coaches Education Director.Be curious. Episode Notes Gary Beacom is a 1984 Canadian Olympian who has continued to perform and compete for more than half a century to develop mastery through theoretical and experimental research. Gary teaches seminars around the world, and with his YouTube channel, he shares exercises, challenges, and pieces of choreography, encouraging skaters at all levels to learn good technique and explore the blade. Japanese figure skating icon Mao Asada, a former world champion, said Thursday that she will open an academy in Tokyo to nurture the next generation of figure skaters.
Dr. Ami Hampole is a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor who practices Sports Medicine and Neuro-Musculoskeletal Medicine. She is also a US figure skating triple gold medalist, former 8x Indian senior national figure skating champion, a World figure skating competitor, and a coach. She currently spends her time as the executive director for Chicago Youth Foundation, a Women-lead organization that helps make the highly expensive and non-diverse ice sports more accessible to the community. She is also a mother of three. Dr. Ami grew up in a culture where a sedentary lifestyle was highly encouraged, especially for women. However, she ended up becoming one of scarce South Asians to get involved in competitive Figure Skating, and with a limited access to resources. She attributes her athletic background to her success in launching change in many communities on multiple levels. She also attributes her athletic background to her state of health and wellness. She was able to avoid falling prey to eating disorders, drugs, and abuse, which have been seen commonly in this and other sports. Her healthy eating habits and activity levels in her teenage years, are largely responsible for her health and wellness today, especially during her pregnancies and postpartum partum years, allowing her to continue to perform for ice shows, etc. But being a healthy woman has not always been glorifying. There have been many challenges, especially as she went into a career in medicine where "healthy" women are not always given the support to meet their full potentials, and also a career where women are not always seen as equal to men. Dr. Ami feels that these barriers oftentimes affect women's ability to give back 100% to their communities. However, she is hopeful that women can work together instead of against each other, alongside men, to create positive changes in this regard, in the near future. The figure skating community in Minnesota and across the country was reeling Thursday, in the wake of Wednesday night's plane crash in Washington, D.C. U.S. Figure Skating said several of its team members were aboard the American Airlines plane that collided with an Army helicopter — skaters, coaches and families returning from a training camp in Wichita, Kansas. That camp had followed the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.St. Paul Figure Skating Club coach and skating director Ben Miller Reisman told MPR News that as of Thursday morning, he had not heard of any Minnesotans among the victims of the crash. He joined Minnesota Now to talk about the impact the crash has had on the tight-knit figure skating community.
A horrific midair collision over Washington, D.C. late Wednesday night has presumably left 67 people dead, including U.S. and Russian figure skating champions and three U.S. service members. American Eagle Flight 5342 carrying 64 passengers from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a military Blackhawk helicopter near Reagan Airport, sending both aircraft plunging into the icy Potomac River. Over 300 emergency crews arrived within minutes, but the devastation was overwhelming. At least 28 bodies have been pulled from the river so far, but officials say they don't expect any survivors. Among the victims were top figure skaters returning from a prestigious training camp. U.S. Figure Skating called the tragedy unspeakable and vowed to support the victims' families. Meanwhile, Senator Tim Kaine is demanding answers, calling Reagan National's congestion a long-standing safety concern. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week, Halley Sutton, Steph Lauer and I talk with Layne Fargo about her new book The Favorites! We dive into her inspiration for the book, trips Halley and Layne took to research the book, how she used character names from Wuthering Heights in The Favorites, and her lifelong love for figure skating! The Favorites SynopsisShe might not have a famous name, funding, or her family's support, but Katarina Shaw has always known that she was destined to become an Olympic skater. When she meets Heath Rocha, a lonely kid stuck in the foster care system, their instant connection makes them a formidable duo on the ice. Clinging to skating—and each other—to escape their turbulent lives, Kat and Heath go from childhood sweethearts to champion ice dancers, captivating the world with their scorching chemistry, rebellious style, and rollercoaster relationship. Until a shocking incident at the Olympic Games brings their partnership to a sudden end.As the ten-year anniversary of their final skate approaches, an unauthorized documentary reignites the public obsession with Shaw and Rocha, claiming to uncover the "real story" through interviews with their closest friends and fiercest rivals. Kat wants nothing to do with the documentary. But she can't stand the thought of someone else defining her legacy either. So, after a decade of silence, she's telling her story: from the childhood tragedies that created her all-consuming bond with Heath to the clash of desires that tore them apart. Sensational rumors have haunted their every step for years, but the truth may be even more shocking than the headlines.Inspired by the powerful love and hate that fuel Emily Bronte's classic, Wuthering Heights, The Favorites is an exhilarating dance between passion, ambition, and what it truly means to win. Episode Notes Peter Grütter competed representing Switzerland throughout the 1950s and 60s, including at the 1964 Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck. He's now been a coach for more than 60 years and is acknowledged as an expert when it comes to steps and turns and control of the blade. His most famous student is Stéphane Lambiel, who he coached to two world championship titles and the Olympic silver medal in 2006. After the end of compulsory figures, Peter took what he had learned from his coach, the legendary Jack Gershwiler, and created a series of warm-up steps and turns that could be used for his students to maintain their mastery of the blade. These steps and turns are now available as an e-learning course through the ISU's eRink program. Peter still teaches, including coming every Wednesday to the Skating School in Champery to work with young skaters. We were very lucky to be able to watch his master class during the 2024 summer camp in Champery and to get to sit down with this great coach to learn about his ideas for the future of the sport. In this episode of Mindset Matters, hosts Patrick and Steffany explore the theme "Thrive in 2025," reflecting on the importance of clarity, completion, and intentional action as the foundation for personal and professional growth. Steffany shares insights from her recent achievements at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating in France, where her teams earned gold and bronze medals, illustrating how focused preparation and letting go of past expectations can lead to success. The couple discusses their annual practice of "completion exercises," a process of identifying and addressing unresolved aspects of life—whether in relationships, business, or personal goals. They emphasize the importance of letting go of energy-draining “incompletions” to create space for clarity and forward momentum. Procrastination, they note, often stems from avoiding these incompletions, which can become a barrier to fulfillment and even lead to feelings of overwhelm or stagnation. The episode revisits the mantra "Clarity Equals Velocity," highlighting how gaining clarity not only accelerates progress but can also create temporary chaos as we adjust to newfound focus. Patrick and Steffany explore how this principle applies across the "seven areas of life"—financial, vocational, familial, social, physical, mental, and spiritual—and share strategies for navigating challenges with intentionality and grace. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on their accomplishments from 2024, identify lessons learned, and set clear intentions for the new year. The hosts offer a series of reflective questions and downloadable resources to guide this process. From letting go of burdensome relationships to celebrating progress and focusing on meaningful growth, Patrick and Steffany inspire their audience to step into 2025 with optimism, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose. Today's story: The backflip has been a controversial move in figure skating for decades. It was first performed in high-level competition at the 1976 Olympics by American skater Terry Kubicka, but was quickly banned due to safety concerns. Despite its prohibition, some skaters continued to perform it in exhibitions. Now, nearly fifty years later, the International Skating Union has decided to legalize the backflip once again, though the move won't earn skaters extra points in competition.Learn this English expression: Give awayFull lesson: https://plainenglish.com/726 --Upgrade all your skills in English: Plain English is the best current-events podcast for learning English. You might be learning English to improve your career, enjoy music and movies, connect with family abroad, or even prepare for an international move. Episode Notes Episode 42 features an interview with 3-time European medalist Matteo Rizzo. We recorded in late July in Madesimo, Italy, where Matteo trains at altitude for part of each summer. Matteo is one of the most seasoned and consistent competitors in the men's discipline, with two Olympics and six world championships under his belt. He has won four bronze medals on the Grand Prix circuit and has finished first or second at the Italian national championships every year from 2014 to 2023. After winning bronze at Europeans in 2024, Matteo had to miss the end of the season to get surgery on his hip. In this interview, Matteo shared his recovery process, approach to training, and the importance of emotional connection with an audience. Thank you to Matteo and his team for making this interview possible, and to Ivan Danilyuk for editing and video production. In terms of achievement, Gracie Gold had it all: Olympic medal, world championships, beloved celebrity at the pinnacle of an incredibly competitive and difficult field. She even became friends with Taylor Swift. Unfortunately, in terms of mental health problems, she also had it all: eating disorders, body dysmorphia, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, ADHD, and OCD. Despite those challenges, her career required dressing up in glamorous outfits and perfect hair and makeup and going out to skate under the spotlights and be judged. It all got to be too much and Gracie fell apart, finally got treatment, and began a long road to recovery. Gracie has a new book, titled OutOfShapeWorthlessLoser: A Memoir of Figure Skating, F*cking Up, and Figuring It Out.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about.
