In this episode of We're Still Here, we delve into the multifaceted efforts of Indigenous communities to reclaim and revitalize their heritage. We begin by addressing recent controversial remarks from commentator Matt Walsh, examining how such dismissals of Native history perpetuate harmful narratives and undermine Indigenous experiences.Next, we celebrate the culinary renaissance led by Native chefs who are decolonizing food by reintroducing ancestral ingredients and traditional cooking methods. This movement not only preserves cultural identity but also promotes health and sustainability within Native communities.A highlight of this culinary resurgence is the American Indian College Fund's 2025 New York EATSS (Epicurean Award to Support Scholars) event, held on May 14 at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. Attendees enjoyed a rich tapestry of Indigenous cuisine, art, and music, including a performance by singer-songwriter Raye Zaragoza .Finally, we turn our attention to Sacramento, where community activists are advocating for the renaming of streets that bear racial slurs. This initiative reflects a broader movement to confront and rectify historical injustices embedded in our public spaces, demonstrating that the journey toward equity and recognition extends beyond monuments to the very names that define our cities.Join us as we explore these stories of resistance, resilience, and the ongoing efforts to honor Indigenous heritage in contemporary society.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

HALO Talks

Greta Wagner is a seasoned fitness industry veteran with over four decades of experience in the HALO (Health, Active Lifestyle, Outdoor) space. A current Board Member of the Health & Fitness Assocation (formerly IHRSA), and Executive Director of Chelsea Piers, her journey began at the age of 16, when she started teaching what used to be called "aerobic dance." After a decade-long hiatus in the golf industry, her return to fitness was marked by a pivotal realization: The sector had seen little growth and was still grappling with engaging the same 80% of people who do not participate in regular exercise or attend fitness clubs. Her career reflects both her adaptability and enduring passion for promoting a healthier lifestyle.  Greta shares her invaluable perspectives on fostering inclusivity, broadening communication, and the significance of a positive work culture that transcends beyond just having state-of-the-art facilities. Also discussed are the pressures of athleticism on young kids, branding excellence of Chelsea Piers, and innovative ideas for advocacy in the health and fitness sector. We'll hear about the challenges of maintaining client attention, and the evolving landscape of video and streaming technology. Finally, we'll look at leveraging competition and technology to drive member engagement and success. This episode is packed with valuable insights from an industry veteran on leadership, resilience, and the collective effort required to drive meaningful change in our space.  On workplace culture, Wagner states, "I can't dictate what company culture is gonna be. I can hope what our culture is gonna be. We can say 'this is what our strategic plan is to make our culture,' but it's our actions, and it's how we live our lives in every moment while we're working together, playing together, socializing together, and our principles and core values. If you stay true to those and you hire the people who believe in those core values and can live it . . . that will resonate. In my opinion, that is everything."  Key themes discussed IHRSA (and the industry's) challenges during the pandemic. 10-year summer camp experience, impact of sports. Workplace culture, branding, employee focus, values. Private, non-institutional company, unique KPIs. Monitoring retention and valuing employee contributions. The evolving role of the Health & Fitness Association.  A few key takeaways:  1. Greta emphasizes that a positive and inclusive work culture is crucial for any business's success, especially in the HALO space. She illustrates this by highlighting Chelsea Piers' commitment to their core values and how it translates into meaningful connections with customers and a happy, long time, dedicated workforce. 2. She emphasizes the importance of open conversations, organization, and effective messaging to address societal and political divisions. Enhancing communication and education within the club environment can foster unity and collective growth. 3. Both Moore and Wagner stress the significance of offering a variety of sports to children, rather than early specialization. This approach helps in reducing pressure and optimizing overall athletic development, allowing kids to explore various interests and skills. 4. Pete asks about leveraging the large membership base of clubs collectively for advocacy efforts. Collecting a small contribution per member per year, as Pete suggests, could significantly bolster financial capabilities for important advocacy initiatives at local, state, and federal levels. 5. Greta discusses the resilience of Chelsea Piers during natural disasters, highlighting the collaborative effort of employees and members to rebuild the property. This underscores the solid and caring culture of the company, which is pivotal in navigating crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. David Gritz joins the show again, this time solo, to share some of the important themes he and his InsurTech NY co-founder, Tony Lew, are making the center of their 2024 Spring Conference. Those themes, AI and Analytics, are each powerful and important in their own right, but the interplay of the two is exponentially more impactful for the future of the insurance industry. The Spring Conference will again focus on practical and impactful applications of AI and Analytics from across P&C, Life and Benefits, with speakers and panelists from across the industry, as well as outstanding networking opportunities. Highlights from the Show InsurTech NY is an ecosystem that acts as an international gateway for startups, brokers, investors and insurers to come together to make the world more resilient through insurance solutions David's experience with an insurtech startup is told in The Future of Insurance, Volume III. The Collaborators March 20th and 21st is the InsurTech NY Spring Conference at Chelsea Piers in NYC, with this year's themes being AI & Analytics and how they can improve underwriting, claims outcomes and more They try to make the content practical so people can walk away with ideas about implementation and impact, with thoughts like how AI can make you more efficient, which can allow your people to dig into the things that take more expertise and therefore drive better results The framing for the event is focused on some key questions Will AI stick in the industry? If so, what kinds of AI and applications are likely to be more than just buzz? How can Analytics help with the highly volatile state of the world today, and the way volatility in different areas is so intertwined, like labor, inflation, war and climate risks? How does AI coming together with Analytics change things? They have a startup in their accelerator called Salient looking at this type of question precisely ITNY also has launched a VC Fund, and are launching their second fund now, with a few areas of focus The growth of Excess & Surplus (E&S) lines as a way for startups to serve a niche that existing players can't serve effectively today A portfolio company, Sertis, focuses on multi-family property risks and combine insurance with a tool to drive better property management and upkeep to reduce losses and rates Reducing the friction in insurance transactions, which is a broad theme A portfolio company, BirdsEyeView, combines all the tools an underwriter needs in one screen to make it easier to take in underwriting inputs from different sources like weather tools smoother and faster Increasing the availability of coverage to more parts of the market to make the world more resilient Elios, who makes disability insurance easier to buy, helping to solve for the extremely low penetration rates of the coverage (only 14% in the US, and just 5% in the UK) The second day Keynote is a panel around startups getting to profitability, with three major insurtech CEOs on stage Jack Kudale, CEO and co-founder of Cowbell Cyber Alex Timms, CEO and founder of Root Insurance Rick McCathron, CEO of Hippo You can get more information and tickets to the ITNY Spring Conference at insurtechny.com This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. Head of marketing for T-Ads, the advertising solutions division of T-Mobile, Cherian Thomas describes the evolution of his rideshare entertainment platform, Octopus, to creating brand love across all digital out of home screens. In this upbeat but informative conversation with the high-energy "Doctor Thomas," Insider Interviews host E.B. Moss also gets the download on DOOH from DPAA CEO, Barry Frey, to offer listeners and viewers a complete picture of the state of screens today. QUOTES AND TIMESTAMPS 00:02:23 - "By the digitization of out-of-home, we mean a modern-day digital advertising business." 00:03:10 - "DOOH is becoming very powerful especially with its ability to target audiences, that heretofore was not available." 00:04:20 - " I've seen these crazy billboards where it almost looks like things are flying off of the screen. It's really amazing what can happen now with digital billboards." 00:11:49 - "While trying to market our app to consumers, we had to identify who is the ideal target audience. And then you look and you're like, wow, that's the Uber and Lyft rider!" 00:13:56 - "If we can delight riders in their Uber and Lyft journey, well, what's the next phase?" "The numbers don't lie: actual consumer spending is four times larger in store than it is online." 00:16:56 - "The numbers don't lie: actual consumer spending is four times larger in store than it is online." 00:18:52 - "Well, it turns out advertisers and brands also have similar pain points when it comes to them spending dollars and getting their brand out there or hitting performance metrics." Watch the full episode with Cherian Thomas, Head of Marketing for T-Ad on YouTube, too! [00:23:42] Enthusiasm, energy and skateboarding to work. 00:24:14 - "It starts from the top. So everything we do in my world is always ‘How is that good for our customers?' And I think that's something really important." T-Mobile Chief Creative Officer, Peter DeLuca with DPAA CEO, Barry Frey at Cannes 00:25:59 - "I think Peter DeLuca is a legend. And if you think about T-Mobile's brand, this is the best our brand has ever been. And you don't get there overnight. You have to be consistent. You have to be honest. You have to deliver. Like we say, dream big and deliver." 00:28:24 - "We leverage our brand to get our customers amazing deals and delight them." 00:33:45 - "My favorite product is the T-Mobile SyncUp Kids Watch, which is kind of a smart watch, but all you can do on it are basic things. As a parent, that was a pain point that T-Mobile had solved...This is kind of in our ethos: solving pain points I think is a common theme that's carried forward in everything that we do." 00:35:08 -  Brand purpose and trust. "One of our promises is “Nada, yada, yada.” Like, that's our actual Metro by T-Mobile brand campaign right now, because everyone else makes a bunch of promises and the fine print is like “yada, yada, yada, yada.” If that doesn't say we don't have any BS here and you can trust us....” 00:37:41 - "If you have a low cost of screen and you have connectivity, why can't there be a screen at the top of the Vail ski resort to show you information and speed times and fastest slope, the slope is closed, etc. So these are things I'm really excited about. [00:38:30] The growth of Digital Out-of-Home. 00:38:39 - As an industry, I'm excited because the TAM -- the Total Addressable Market -- for Digital Out-of-Home, is much larger. And that's always been the challenge with Digital Out-of-Home. ...You've got a $10 billion industry, but it's getting bigger and bigger as these macro trends continue." 00:40:11 - "What does the E.B. stand for?!” Don't miss the 10/10/23 DPAA Global Summit in New York City's Chelsea Piers, with speakers from McDonalds, Mastercard, Pepsi and more!  You can help sustain this podcast with a little donation to Insider Interviews at https://buymeacoffee.com/mossappeal

ABOUT DAMON DIMARCO AND TOWER STORIES Anyone old enough to remember can tell you where they were and what they were doing the morning of September 11, 2001 , when two airplanes were flown into the Twin Towers of New York City's World Trade Center. While preserving the stories in the original edition of the people who were in New York City on that fateful day and in the days and months that followed, Damon DiMarco's Tower Stories: An Oral History of 9/11 offers additional interviews that provide a contemporary perspective on the tragedy. "Never forget" has become part of our lexicon in remembering the tragedy of 9/11. But why do we remember? According to Alice Greenwald, President and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, who was interviewed for the new edition, ".remembrance is essential to moral conscience.(to) determine what's right and what's wrong. and to ask ourselves what we are capable of as human beings, both at our worst and at our best." While confronting unfathomable loss, the individuals featured in the book speak to the myriad ways by which Americans rose to meet the challenges presented by 9/11and its aftermath, honoring the many heroes that are found within its pages. Some of the stories preserved from earlier editions feature the small group of people who miraculously made it safely down from the 89th floor of Tower 1; the New York Times reporter who desperately fought her way through the fleeing crowds to get back into Lower Manhattan; the paramedic who set up a triage area 200 yards from the base of the Towers before they collapsed; and the bereaved citizens of New York City who struggled to get on with their lives in the days and months following the tragic event among dozens of others. MSNBC said Tower Stories was "arguably the most successful attempt at capturing the enormity of the events of 9/11. Damon DiMarco's sprawling oral history (presents) human stories.with a raw candor a thousand times more affecting than any cold statistic offered by a commission.a riveting and disarmingly emotional read." This best-selling and critically acclaimed book on 9/11continues in the tradition of Studs Terkel, encapsulating a wide variety of viewpoints from everyday citizens. DiMarco's literary time capsule offers new insights that benefit from twenty years of reflection on the world-shattering event, capturing the voices of individuals such as: . Reverend Jim Martin, New York Times bestselling author and Jesuit priest: "Your interior life, your sense of right and wrong, can guide you. But very often, we don't pay attention. We can't forget how parts of our society were impelled to help. But then other parts were like, 'We're gonna show them.' . Tom Haddad, survivor of the 89th floor, Tower 1: "After 9/11, there was common cause. It was really inspiring. And then . . . it faded.". Stephen Adly Guirgis Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright based in NY: "Still there's a part of me that misses the old days. Like, when you interacted with people in the street, you did it through the filter of We Live in New York." . Glenn Guzi, Program Director at Port Authority of NY & NJ: "I don't mind telling you there were days when I thought, 'I don't know how we're going to do this.' The story of rebuilding downtown is a story of cooperation. we saw the power and beauty of humanity when good people come together." Their stories, along with those preserved from the original edition of Tower Stories: An Oral History of 9/11, not only reconnect readers to what was lost on 9/11, but also to what can still be gained by remembering. DiMarco says, "Originally, the Tower Stories project sprang from the disturbing notion that the memory of September 11might someday fade from the world consciousness. Two decades later I find myself less concerned over what we forget and more intrigued by what we remember and why. Tower Stories: An Oral History of 9/11 is to remind us of the humanity and unity we are capable of as a country, as citizens and as people." ABOUT DAMON DIMARCO Damon DiMarco is the author of The Brown Agenda (with Richard Fuller), Heart of War: Soldiers' Voices from the Front Lines in Iraq, and My Two Chinas: The Memoir of a Chinese Counter-Revolutionary (with Baiqiao Tang), as well as The Actor's Art & Craft and The Actor's Guide to Creating a Character (both with William Esper). DiMarco has been a guest on national television and radio, including FOX, CNN, The National Geographic Channel, and the Premiere Radio Network. He has been a guest speaker at colleges, universities, and community groups across the country. A professional actor as well as a writer, Damon has appeared in primetime and daytime television programs on CBS, ABC, and NBC; commercials; independent films; regional theatres; and trade shows. He has written for the stage, television, and screen, and taught acting on the faculties of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey and the New York Film Academy in Manhattan. He teaches writing to PhD students in the History and Culture program at Drew University's Caspersen School of Graduate Studies. REVEREND JAMES MARTIN REFLECTS ON THE GRACE HE SAW ON THE PILE AFTER 9/11(FROM TOWER STORIES) In those first few days at 9/11, do you remember all the talk about missing people? Posters of the missing went up all over the city. Of course - again - there were no survivors. But we didn't know that then. There was an article in the paper that said if you're a family member and you're looking for someone, you could check lists from all the hospitals. And there was a center set up at the New School, at one of their buildings. On 12th Street, I think it was. I went down there to help people, to counsel them. But there wasn't a lot to do. The next day, I went back to Chelsea Piers. I was still looking for a way to contribute. And this is where the ministry kind of started. A police cruiser came up to me. The police officer leaned out and said, "Do you want to go down there?" I was wearing my Roman collar, so I was easy to recognize. I said yes. "Get in," he said. I'll never forget it. We drove from Chelsea Piers. I was in the backseat with a psychiatrist. I think the police officer had just sort of picked him up, too. We drove further and further south. That's when I started to see how things were. See, if you were in Manhattan . . . say, near the 40s and 50s . . . you couldn't really tell something was wrong. I mean, sure, there was less traffic. And there was the smell. Other than that, though, things seemed pretty normal. But then we kept driving down past 14th Street. And you started to see, like . . . ash. We kept going south, and I saw fires burning all over the place. This was on September 13. We pulled right up to the site. I got out. The psychiatrist said, "Good luck." The car drove away. I was by myself at the Pile. It was really overwhelming, like a scene from a war movie. Terrifying. The scale of it. These huge jagged remains of the building. And it was still on fire, still smoking. Other buildings nearby were still burning, too. And the smell was . . . well. You knew you were standing next to a grave.I saw hundreds of uniformed personnel from every possible agency. Like an alphabet soup of initials: OSHA and CIA and FBI and army people. Policemen and firemen. This was before any sort of order had been imposed on the place. In a few weeks or a few days, maybe, there would be fences. But I just walked right in. Back then, even the term "Ground Zero" was new. I remember looking around and wondering what I could possibly do. And here I thank my Jesuit training. Because, I thought, I cannot work in the morgue. I just didn't think I was capable of doing that. But I thought that at least I could minister to the rescue workers. So that's what I started to do.When I say minister, I mean trying to help them. You listen to them. "How are you?" That sort of thing. Most of this is what we call a ministry of presence. In the same way as if you were a firehouse chaplain or a police chaplain, you help people to find God where they are. To know God's present among them. But you know what was funny? The people I met were more solicitous of me. I kept hearing, "How are you doing, Father? Are you okay? Is this difficult for you?" It was so generous. Everyone I saw was so other-directed. Other-centered. This was evidenced by their already being down there. I found it very moving. So that's what I did for a couple of weeks. I was walking around, ministering, helping people. By that point, we knew there were no survivors. It was just rescue workers. Then I brought other Jesuits down and we celebrated Mass there, which was incredible. I wrote about this in my book "Searching for God at Ground Zero." Which, actually has reminiscences that are probably more accurate. Because, you know, it was over 20 years ago. Which I still can't believe. I just can't believe it. My experience of Ground Zero was one where the Holy Spirit was present. It was a place of generosity and love, community and union. Charity, concord, and service. There were all these people working for others. And remember, you had people coming from all over the country. In those early days, anyone would come in. Firefighters, sure, but also . . . there were these women from the Midwest who'd set up a candy stand. I'll never forget that. So while, for many, Ground Zero was a place of Good Friday - the suffering, dying and burial of Christ - I saw a different aspect. I saw it as a place of Easter Sunday. Because there was a sense of new life there. Both these things present at the same site. What do I mean by the term "Holy Spirit?" I mean God's presence. An active presence. And that's important. Because you could say that God's presence is everywhere, the idea that God's spirit pervades the world as a sort of benign presence. But I believe God's Spir

In the spring of 1958 – the Golden Rule -- a 30 foot skiff crewed by four -- sailed towards the Marshall Islands where the U.S. military was testing atomic bombs. Their plan was to anchor their tiny boat in the waters close to the Bikini and Enewetak Atolls -- in order to stop the atomic testing.Over six decades later a restored “Golden Rule” sailed up the Hudson River and moored at Chelsea Pier. It was Fleet Week and the skiff's message of nuclear disarmament was displayed on its mizzen mast. For this program I biked over to the Chelsea Piers and spent some time on the Veterans for Peace Golden Rule sailboat with the crew and its supporters – as they continue to effort to end the looming possibility of Nuclear War.Alan Winson - Producer BCR Hosted on Acast. What you'll learn in this episode: How the jewelry industry has changed over the last 50 years How the Women's Jewelry Association helped women jewelry professionals get the recognition they deserved What it was like to work with Elizabeth Taylor and Hilary Clinton to design iconic jewels for them Linda's advice for young jewelry designers About Linda Orlick Linda Orlick is a longtime public relations expert in the jewelry industry as well as an accomplished business executive with experience branding high-end products, people and companies. She is co-founder of the influential Women's Jewelry Association, a volunteer organization founded in 1984 that began with 10 women in an apartment in Manhattan and blossomed to become a formidable entity and powerful voice for women in the jewelry industry worldwide. Linda served as its President for a four- year term. Additional Resources: Instagram LinkedIn Photos available on ThejewelryJourney.com Transcript: Linda Orlick entered the jewelry industry when gold was $35 an ounce and jewelry designers were unknowns who worked behind the scenes. Due in no small part to Linda's passion for the industry and her work to brand and promote emerging designers, retailers and shows, jewelry is now a respected part of the American fashion scene. She joined the Jewelry Journey Podcast to talk about the history of the Women's Jewelry Association; why it's so hard for people to leave the jewelry industry once they enter it; and how she helped facilitate the design of the 4.25 carat canary yellow diamond ring Hilary Clinton wore to the 1993 inauguration. Read the episode transcript here. Sharon: Hello, everyone. Welcome to the Jewelry Journey Podcast. This is the first part of a two-part episode. Please make sure you subscribe so you can hear part two as soon as it's released later this week.    My guest is Linda Orlick. Linda has spent her whole career in jewelry. She has been very successful as a retailer and a consultant to retailers. She's one of the cofounders of the Women's Jewelry Association, and she helped build it into a powerhouse. I'm sure many of you are members of the Women's Jewelry Association. Today, we will learn a lot more about her jewelry journey. There's a lot to say. Linda, welcome to the program.   Linda: It's so good to be here. Thank you, Sharon.   Sharon: Tell us about your jewelry journey.    Linda: Well, I hope we have a lot of time. In 1974, when gold was $35 an ounce—   Sharon: Wow!   Linda: I guess, wow. My family and a few friends spent the summer in the Catskills. At that time, there were three ladies who had a company and were selling a collection of gold jewelry to other women like a pyramid scheme. It was a combination of chains and necklaces and earrings. I said to a friend of mine, “We should do this.” So, we went ahead and invested $400 each, and we got our first collection.    We thought we would be brave enough—we lived in Riverdale in the Bronx—to take a trip into the city and go into office buildings in the garment center, introduce ourselves to the receptionist, go into the bathroom and set up wares. There you have it: we were selling our jewelry. Women used to come in and give us hundreds of dollars in deposits, and we would come back and deliver pieces to them. The two of us looked at each other and said, “I think this is fun. This is good. Better than doing it out of our home,” because we both had small children. That's how it all started. Again, gold was $35 an ounce. Can you imagine that was 48 years ago?   My next introduction was to a silver designer by the name of Minas. He was from Greece, and he had a beautiful collection of 18-carat pieces. In fact, I'm wearing two of his pieces. I fell in love with his collection. I had never sold to a retailer before. I didn't know how to go about it. I walked into Bloomingdale's one day with my little jewelry roll, and I said, “Knock, knock; I'm Linda and I'd like to introduce myself.” The buyer—her name was Susan; I can't remember her last name—said, “Do you have an appointment?” I said, “Oh, did I need one?” Before I knew it, I was showing her the collection. She fell in love with it also, and she bought a nice selection of it. Now, mind you, a ring like this was $22. Again, it was 18-karat gold and silver. Everything was very affordable, so they sold out immediately. I kept the money from the order, and then I started to work full time for Minas, and I kept the relationship with Bloomingdale's going.    Along the way, gold went from $35 an ounce to $800 an ounce. It was at the same time that Minas decided he was going to turn his business into all 18-karat gold. He felt that staying in the United States, it would be difficult for him to continue to sell his collection in all gold, so he decided to go back to his homeland in Greece and continue with his collection. By chance, I was at the Sheraton Center when the JA had their shows there, and I got a part-time position with Marsha Breslow, who was a wonderful colorist. She used to do lapis and 18-karat bead jewelry for Cartier and had her special collection for them. She used to take semi-precious beads and make the most extraordinary necklaces and earrings.    It caught the attention of Vera Wang, who was then an assistant at Vogue Magazine. Vera kept coming up to the office and working with us on different collections. Vera was working on a collection for Calvin Klein for one of his original runway shows. She asked Marsha to create a collection that would go on his runway. Excitingly enough, it also made the cover two seasons in a row of Fashion Times Magazine. For a jewelry designer to be on the cover of Fashions Times was unheard of.    Along the way, I called Women's Wear Daily, who never featured fine jewelry. I believe it was Agnes Carmack, who was then an assistant, who answered, and I said, “I've got a gorgeous collection of earrings,” and she said, “O.K., bring it over.” We went up on the rooftop. I had a friend who was a model. This wonderful photographer they had, Tony Palmieri, photographed about six different earrings on her, and they landed on the front page of Women's Wear Daily. It was the first ever.   I started to think to myself, “If Seventh Avenue can promote by name, why shouldn't the jewelry industry?” I went back to Bloomingdale's and told them about the Marsha Breslow collection. After being in Vogue Magazine and with Vera Wang putting it on Calvin Klein, people began to really take notice of the designers and names. We were in Bloomingdale's, which was a Federated Store. The parent company was associated with Associated Merchandising Corporation. I became friendly with the CEO of AMC, Lee Abraham, and he called me one day and said, “Linda, I want something different for Bloomingdale's that no other store has.” I said, “O.K., give me a few days to think about it.” I called him back and said, “Lee, I want to have the first design boutique ever in a department store, and I want it to be in Bloomingdale's, in the 59th Street store.” He said, “You got it. The buyer Marty Newman, whom everybody loves so dearly, and the DM will be visiting you in the next week.”   Sharon: The DM is what? I'm sorry.   Linda: The department manager. “It's our secret, but they are going to listen to your story about a designer boutique and it's going to happen.” Sure enough, a week later, I get a phone call from Marty Newman, who went on to be one of my dearest friends. He said, “I'm not sure what I have here, but I want you to create a collection. We can give you six feet of showcase space.” If you walk into Bloomingdale's and see the Louis Vuitton store to the right, there's always that big flower. Exactly where that beautiful flower is was the showcase that he wanted us to work with.   So, we put in a collection. We were responsible for designing the showcase and hiring our own salespeople. They gave us a sales goal. We quadrupled that. Lee and the buyer were so impressed, he said to me, “Now you can go to the rest of the Federated stores,” which included Woodward & Lothrop. I created the first designer boutique. What can I say? The rest is history. Marsha Breslow went into these stores and the word “jewelry designer” came along with it.    It was a slow process because jewelry designers were still not recognized. It was a real uphill battle. In 1981, I was invited by the Manufacturing Jewelry and Silversmiths of America, MJSA, and I eventually met the man who became my former husband, Henry Dunay. I was invited to do direct mail advertising and public relations for the first group of American jewelry designers that were invited to the Baselworld Fair. Basel didn't want any Americans to come to it. They fought and said, “Americans, what do they know about jewelry design? They design in 14-karat gold. They have no sense of design.” So, they stuck us in a little corner behind the cafeteria where nobody could see them. We did a mailing to hundreds and hundreds of retailers across the world. Little by little, when you have a designer like Henry Dunay or Jose Hess, names who were emerging designers, and they're not being sold by weight, which is what they did early on. You sold your jewelry by weight. People started to recognize it. They became a real force in Basel. They were invited back every year, and every year the collections grew more and more incredible.    The American jewelry designers outdid all the other countries as far as designing metals and working in 18-karat and precious and semiprecious stones. I went to the Basel Fair for 21 years and became very friendly with the then-head of the fair. Eventually, the Basel Fair hired me to promote the fair to American retailers to try and get more American retailers to come to Basel. That was when there were so many competitions in New York. There was the emergence of JCK, the JA show, which launched the Couture Show, the JCK Show, which launched Luxury. They converged on Las Vegas and took over the ability for retailers to come to one place and see extraordinary designs. Then, of course, you had the European retailers wanting to come, too. It gave Basel a real run for its money. I had done public relations for the JA Show for many years, and I helped create a lot of exciting highlights for the Couture Show. I had a very close relationship with Robb Report magazine.   Sharon: Which magazine?   Linda: Robb Report magazine.   Sharon: Robb Report, O.K., yes.   Linda: Robb Report is very high-end luxury jewelry. I created a Robb Report event at the Couture Show after the major entertainment, which was always sponsored by Vogue Magazine. It had over-the-top musicians performing, and it was a luxury fair the couture jewelers could go to with over-the-top desserts and interesting things. That grew to be very big and kept the tour very special until Couture and JA decided to make its move to Vegas.    When that program was over, I became the public relations and marketing person for the JCK Show. I was also watching the Luxury Show within the JCK Show. We came up with a lot of programs and conferences that would create wider visibility for the show. In fact, because of my 21 years in Basel and my relationships not just with jewelry designers, but with the watch companies, I was able to create the first watch luxury show. I introduced the concept to my colleagues at JCK and I brought my dear friend, Steven Kaiser, on board to oversee the show. The Luxury by JCK Watch Show is still in existence today and is the first and only luxury watch show in the U.S. So, that was very exciting.    The rest, as they say, is history. I watched the industry go from $35 an ounce and deciding how much I should pay for this based on a scale, to a showcase with the most beautiful designs ever created in the world. I have to give a lot of credit to my former husband, Henry Dunay, because in my opinion he was—and still is—one of the greatest jewelry designers in the industry. He set the tone for finishes on jewelry with his love for pearls, his love for precious and semiprecious stones, his ability to search out stones and create a design around it.    For instance, my dear friend who worked at the Diamond Information Center, called me one day and said, “I have a 4.25 canary yellow diamond that was found in a mine in Arkansas by a local jeweler. If Henry could create a ring for Hillary Clinton to wear at the inauguration, she will wear it.” Henry was leaving for Europe the next day, and I said, “You're not going. To design a ring for Hillary Clinton and have her wear it at the inauguration, that comes first. Please put off the jewelry trip for another few days.” Sure enough, he created the most beautiful cinnabar ring. It was from the argosy of Arkansas. You saw pieces of platinum and different textures in the 18-karat gold that depicted the topography of Arkansas, with the 4.25 diamond set inside. It was a cushion shape. It was never cut. It came out of the ground just the way you see it in the ring. It was extraordinary.    Sadly, the jeweler wanted the diamond back rather than having the whole ring donated to the Smithsonian as it should have been, so Henry had to take the ring apart. He said, “One day, I'll have a stone made that looks exactly like it and I'll reset it.” I don't think that ever happened, but people got to see it. It went on view in the Museum of Natural History. It became part of one of the exhibits at the Museum of Natural History. It was an extraordinary ring. I do have pictures of it to share with everybody.   Sharon: We'll have those on the website.   Linda: It's an exciting journey. Back in the early 80s, I made lots of good women friends in the industry. I think it was in 1982. There was a blustery, snowy night, and we were all at the JA show. It was at the Hilton in the Sheraton Center. We were invited by two representatives from New England to a meeting to tell us about the women's group they put together, New England Women in Jewelry. We thought it had a lot of merit, and my friends and colleagues and I kept going back and forth and back and forth. Do we need this organization? What do you think?    We finally decided we would call our friend, Ronny Lavin, and 10 women we were close with to talk about it. There was Nancy Pier Sindt, who was an editor with National Jeweler; a designer, Joan Benjamin; Jo Ann Paganetti, who was a professor at FIT; Marian Ruby, who was the jewelry buyer at Finley at the time. I hope I'm not leaving anybody's name out. We said, “O.K., I think we should do this. Let's become mentors. Let's create a scholarship program. Let's create a platform for women to share their ideas and grow their businesses.” We voted on the name Women's Jewelry Association.    Nothing could have prepared us for what was coming next. I sent you our original newsletter. We came on like such a force that we expanded our bylaws to include the rest of the country. The New England group became our first general chapter, and the rest is history. Most importantly, of course, there was somebody we all loved and respected, Gerry Friedman, who was the editor in chief of National Jeweler Magazine, and we were going to ask Gerry to be our first president. She was like, “Of course.”    We had several meetings where we put together a group of programs of other women to talk about what's going on in the industry, what suppliers and vendors to use, the world of design and all different topics. Gerry always had a group to her home for dinner, and one day we were talking about what's going to make us stand out. There are lots of men's groups or enough men's groups, and they had dinners. All of a sudden, it came to me: We had to create the first awards in the jewelry industry for women, by women. We all agreed we would do this. Through Gerry's connections at the Lotos Club, we created the first Awards for Excellence dinner. It was at the Lotos Club, and it was a total sellout. We had to move it to the Harmonie Club, which was a little bit larger in space, again through Gerry's connections. Again, it was a sellout. We honored Helene Fortunoff and Bess Ravella. We honored Angela Cummings for best designer, Marian Ruby for best retailer. We had Nancy Pier Sindt for best editor. The list goes on and on. It became such a sense of pride for all of us, to recognize each other for our accomplishments in the industry.    The award dinner kept growing and growing. We moved to Tavern on the Green, and again, it was a total sellout. We kept growing. For the last two years, it's been at Chelsea Piers. There are over 700 women and men that attend. The awards have literally become the ticket in the industry. It's a current event. It's a great place to network. It's a great place to catch up with your friends and your vendors in the industry, and it's a beautiful, beautiful evening.    I am proud to say that from those original 10 women in Ronny Lavin's apartment, there are now 20 chapters all over the world with, I believe, a membership of 17,000 women and men worldwide. The Women's Jewelry Association is a force to be reckoned with, and now they have programs in all different regions. They have ongoing programs. When I look back on my career, the Women's Jewelry Association stands out as one of my greatest highlights. Along the way I've gotten beautiful emails from members who said I actually changed the course of their lives by creating the Women's Jewelry Association. I take those comments very seriously and to heart, because I was always trying to do something different and trying to make room for people to grow. If somebody got laid off from a job, I was the first person they would come to. I would always help them find a position or help them with what they're going through and perhaps help them look at a different career within the industry.    When I started in the industry, there were barely any women. One of the women that stands out to me is Helene Fortunoff, because she was one of the very first women to ever have retail experience. She took all of her children to work with her every day. Five of her children worked with her every single day. Now not only are her children in the business, but Esther and Ruth have carried on their mother's incredible journey in the jewelry business. It's remarkable to see how, from the beginning to where we are now, the jewelry business has become one of the major industries in the world. Diamonds and precious and semi-precious stones, pearls, pearls, pearls—because I love pearls—are now the mainstay of what people look for when they're going shopping for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, or just when a woman wants to buy her own jewelry.   Sharon: We will have photos posted on the website. Please head to TheJewelryJourney.com to check them out.

"Political advertising has been a real motivating and mainly a good thing for us in 2022."That's how Steven Passwaiter, Vice President of Growth & Strategy in the Media Intelligence division of Kantar and a CMAG Senior Advisor, began a TVB Forward Conference presentation midday Thursday that offered a plethora of fresh data on how political ad dollars are trending across the 2022 election season."It's one for the record books," he said before sharing 2018 and 2020 political ad dollars. With 47 days until Election Day, we are now 10% over the presidential year and 50% over 2018.Even more, Kantar has upped its record-breaking political ad spending estimate to $9 billion. Los Angeles and Las Vegas are attracting many of those ad dollars. The No. 1 station for political ad revenue? It's Cox Media Group's flagship property, WSB-2 in Atlanta. The issues most coming up in advertising? Inflation, reproductive rights, healthcare and public safety are tops. What another big takeaways did Passwaiter share? They're all here in this special InFOCUS Podcast, presented by dot.FM, recorded live on September 22 at Chelsea Piers in New York to close out the live General Session of the TVB Forward Conference.

Apply for tickets here: https://bit.ly/3R6oENt When we talk about lending nowadays, it's no longer just about big banks with large underwriting teams. Advancements in technology are completely changing the lending and loan management practices. It's all about AI these days - a cost-effective way to reduce that long time it usually takes to close a loan, boosting competitiveness and profitability. Automation allows lenders and banks to focus more on the customer experience and less on looking at data from all kinds of standardized forms. Digital lenders have shown that their bet is on technology, rather than balance sheets. Plus, through the use of alternative data, lenders can access a wider customer base, as folks who maybe didn't qualify for a loan under FICO can now be found eligible. We're exploring this topic today with my guests Zest AI CEO Mike de Vere and Informed.IQ CEO Justin Wickett.

This week, Josh and Adam are thrust into a terrifying world where the laws of physics and mankind are tossed aside without hesitation. That world is called Chicago. Our SVU for this week is sandwiched in between an episode of Chicago Fire (S3E7 “Nobody Touches Anything”) and a Chicago P.D. (S2E7 “They'll Have to Go Through Me”). While one does not need to watch either of these to enjoy our SVU, we obviously dove into the deep end with a fun loving crew of Vegas visiting, zumba instructing, bounty hunting firefighters and then waded through the muck with a morally dubious band of police officers. The 16:9 PODCAST IS SPONSORED BY SCREENFEED – DIGITAL SIGNAGE CONTENT More and more traditional integrators and IT services companies are finding their way into the digital signage industry, but I can't recall seeing one of them getting seriously into the media side of business ... until now. A well-established IT managed services company based near Toledo, Ohio - called Velocity - is not only providing technical services to digital out of home media companies, it's directly selling media. The company describes its media solutions business unit as being an an end-to-end digital signage provider - doing hardware, software, installation, tech support, media sales and everything in between. Velocity runs and owns digital screen networks in groceries, cinema lobbies and hotels, and is looking to grow its footprint. I had an interesting chat with the company's Senior VP of Digital Media, John McCauley. Subscribe to this podcast: iTunes * Google Play * RSS TRANSCRIPT John, thank you for joining me. I was intrigued when I heard and started reading about Velocity that here is a managed services company, a managed services provider that does a lot of IT work, but they have a media wing and I thought, oh, that's different.  John McCauley: Yes it is, and I think we have a very enthusiastic CEO, Greg Kiley who has really taken to the place-based digital out-of-home media's core component and how it stitches together with our overall managed services business, and I think we're starting to really see the benefits of it with the investments that we've made in both resources and just alliances through COVID. So it's exciting times.  Okay. So let's back up a little bit. Can you tell me a little bit about what Velocity is all about,  where it's based, how large a company it is, those sorts of things?  John McCauley: We're based in Holland, Ohio. It's near Toledo and the company started 15+years ago. Greg Kiley, the CEO, created a rollup of local, regional voice and data services. And from that you create some scale and you create some efficiencies for customers, allowing sort of one-stop shop across like multiple locations across multiple areas of the country, and that proved to be a very fruitful business, saving money of course, and really creating some stickiness between customers. The managed services, the network services, what else can you do on that connection? That was like a birth of where other aspects of the company could grow, and sectors that we'd like to be in including retail and hospitality and entertainment. All those things started to really converge and the company had a lot of success probably for a good 15+ years and two years ago, more or less, we got into sort of the digital out-of-home business and always had connection to our customers and really in response to the customers thinking, what else can we do on the connection?  Starting with merchandising signs, thinking about hotels and maybe retail, those locations would use those to promote offerings and then over time, we start to explore with our customers, can we turn this into a media opportunity, which obviously would provide revenue back to them, creating another revenue opportunity for the company. And I think the timing of that is all very serendipitous for us because digital out-of-home, and technology enabled selling are all converging, and that's a big part of the growth in digital out-of-home is this sort of the technology and the digitization of signs, and we find ourselves in a very interesting and exciting place right now. Did you have end-user customers who were pushing Velocity on some sort of a cost-recovery model, saying, could we put in signs and make money back on these things or was this more something that Velocity came up with?  John McCauley: I think a little more on our side and then the clients obviously are the beneficiaries of it. I think a company like us is thinking about all sorts of growth opportunities and also thinking about ways for more customers to come into the fold. We want to be able to provide as much stickiness as we can. So whether you would come in through our network services side of things and we bring digital signage solutions to you or someone comes in through the digital signage solutions and we're able to extend them network services. The company is very focused on being deep and across the board with as many solutions as we can for our customers.  So right now, if I'm looking at your website, you do call centers services, repair depot, onsite techs, back office support, project management, all the kind of traditional things that you would have out of IT managed services and telecom managed services. I remember having a client in the auto sector that had a digital signage department and they described themselves as the land of misfit toys. They didn't really fit in with the rest of the company. Culturally, how does the media wing fit within a whole bunch of guys or people who are IT services people?  John McCauley: I think we fit very nicely together. There's a lot of similarities within that. First and foremost, we're very customer centric, right? So I think when you start as being customer centric, whether you're providing an immediate solution for a customer or a sort of technology managed services solution, you end up in the right place aligned around that. There's also a lot of cross-pollination, whether you work with CMS systems, or digital signage sort of capabilities, you're working very closely with your IT group, and then also as you're supporting your customers, right? We have a grocery network and a hospitality network and others, and the responsiveness, we all work well together, right? If a sign goes down, you're tapping into your managed services group, the call center is contacting us and it's very symbiotic, and I think the way the company has put these pieces together has worked well. I can definitely see in other places where they may be assembled versus orchestrated, you'd probably see a bit of a difference.  So the media solutions business unit, if you want to call it that, what all is in that?  John McCauley: So we have networks and hospitality, grocery. We have a relationship with cinemas and Cinema lobbies also within Redbox in video toppers on top of Redbox kiosks, and then through another group, as part of a media solution, we have a direct sales group that represents inventory within bars, transit centers, and convenience stores.  So that mixture of that portfolio of media opportunities allows us to leverage a direct sales group that is working on just a representation basis to help bring into the fold of particular deals of other media that we own and operate, and similarly, if we go owned and operate, we can look to extend those opportunities within networks that we represent. I think within the digital out-of-home space, it's important to have that sort of portfolio approach, allows us to nurture some networks, develop other networks, and I think overall a lot is happening in the space and allows us to be nimble too.  Did you start with direct sales or was that a kind of a lesson learned, that we can't really use a rep shop, we need to bring this in-house? John McCauley: We have an affiliate approach. So I would say our channel strategy where we do use Programmatic, of course, everybody needs to connect to Programmatic. We have third-party relationships with people that may have endemic relationships, maybe particularly within grocery. ScreenVision Media represents some of our inventory and they are leveraging the on-screen advertising and people who want to get close to that customer and extend them outside the cinema. So that sort of has its own strategy, and then our direct group is really a traditional digital out-of-home group. So you can't forget that part of the stack of revenue coming in, and I think as we think about revenue and I know a lot of people in the digital out-of-home space think about this is where the layers of the cake are coming from.  It may be in the beginning of the year when the media is not as heavy, like 15% of media might be spent in the first quarter, you might be a little more Programmatic oriented, right? As you get open exchange, not PMP, as you get to later in the year where maybe 40% of the media spend could be in Q4, you're probably going to be more PMP and maybe a little less open exchange. And so that mix of portfolios could also change by the sector, vertical that you're in.  We consciously did that and I think bringing in the digital out-of-home was on the roadmap. It just took us as we started to make our acquisitions and some of the other affiliates came in, but they all have to work together. We're working very closely as a centralized resource, coordinating the efforts, because that's how you maximize the revenue.  The grocery network you acquired, has that been the model for all the media properties you're in?  John McCauley: That was something that we were interested in grocery and retail. That opportunity came our way and we definitely saw our chance to leverage our relationship with our affiliates, as well as combine that with some strategic things that were coming down the road, but many things we just built from scratch. At the hotel and hospitality network, I think there was a recent release that went out with G6. That's something that there is no network that begins, right? So we're deploying the signs and we're starting it from scratch, and I think you'll, over time, see even more from us where we're combining opportunities where there may be existing networks in place, but we can be the catalyst for more digitization and more growth. So the G6 one, that's an operator of a series of Motel 6s, right? John McCauley: Correct. Yes, and hotels are an interesting sort of vertical in the digital out-of-home, not quite landed with media buyers yet, but there's a tremendous amount of purchasing power that resides within hotel guests. Obviously if you stay at a hotel for longer periods of time, you're going to be spending more money in the local economy. But even if you were to go in and have a short-term stay right, more than likely, you're going to be spending some money in the economy.  We also know from just the dwell time, as people are considering things, landing a message that may be more regional in nature, or maybe it's a specific product, that's yet another impression that's made on a customer or potential customer, as they're within the lobbies. There's a little bit of work to do within hospitality, but we're super bullish on that, particularly when you see that the spending ultimately at the end of the day, media agencies and advertisers are looking for what's that incremental media that I can bring to my campaign and media mix that can be the extra, what's going to help me close the loop? And I think when you're sitting in front of people who are away from home, you know they're going to be spending money. That's definitely an opportunity to influence purchase.  I'm guessing and it's purely a guess, but given the history of digital out-of-home, a lot of the networks that kind of bubbled up were often by entrepreneurs who were bootstrapped and were going into places like Motel 6 owner group or whatever, and saying, we can do this for you, we can put these screens in and so on, and maybe in the early days they accepted that. But I think the experience was such that so many of those kinds of bootstrap companies went out of business, that a large well-established IT services firm is probably more readily welcomed in the office to talk about it.  John McCauley: I think the key thing about it is, even if you can bootstrap the signage deployment, ultimately at the end of the day, it's going to be the service, right? With signs, always there's cane activity issues, something goes down the monitoring, the maintenance, right? The ability to help program through CMS systems and that ultimately is how you get across the finish line, and it's super difficult to do, I think if you're bootstrapping and we have the benefit of the resources of Velocity, to create an infrastructure that allows us to support these networks and obviously as we scale, we continue to look at sort of our resources, but we're very much on the radar screen of how we continue to provide that level of resourcing.  So I'm an owner of numerous motor inns in the US Southwest or something like that, and I approach you guys, what all would you be able to do? Do you take it right from start to finish and aftercare or are there things that you still leave for others?  John McCauley: Yeah, this would be end to end. Our way of choice of moving forward is design, I think sometimes that's often missed, what's the best place to deploy? What is the best signage to use? Getting them deployed and then ongoing monitoring of the deployment, and ultimately, depending on whether the customer wants it or not is bringing advertising. But whether you bring the advertising or not, there's a CMS system component and we find if we have everything from the beginning to the end, we can provide the highest level of service for the customer, and look, I don't think it's really lost on our customers who are in the hotel business. Sometimes we use the term digital concierge for the signage that we provide in the lobby because that's allowing the hotel to communicate. These are the services that are available within the hotel. Sometimes it could be a restaurant, right? They are in there and it helps them drive money, sometimes it's a rewards program. ESA has something called the perks program, which allows their guests to download an app and get deals in the community. So that level of communication, we want to be able to provide that CMS component and then advertising is something, and I think generally speaking, when it's handled end to end in a one-stop shop, you're going to get the most from your primary customer, and you can bring the most service, and therefore the most benefit whether it's going to be efficiencies, savings, and obviously, revenue.  I remember with telecoms companies going back 15 years or so, they started looking at digital signage and described it very much as you did a little bit earlier on, where it's a layered service thing where we're already providing the connectivity and the the boots on the ground, so to speak, to come in and repair things. So why not layer this on top of it? Just in the same way that we could maybe layer this building security or whatever. John McCauley: I think layered services is a nice way to describe it, and I think when you're working with companies like Velocity where you're very customer focused and looking to help drive value, for your customer, these things come up and I do think that this digitization of signage and communication, while some people may feel like that's a lot to undertake, once you have it, you're taking the communication and you're changing it up, like on a much more frequent basis.  If you think about movie theaters, and think about menu boards, that used to be that you put them into sort of a plug board, “Popcorn costs $2.50”. Nowadays, a lot of movie theaters have digital menu boards and those digital menu boards allow things to be like by movie, you can change what the offering is. Here's the pack you're going to be focusing on around the time of day and that has really proven to be a driver of an anchor mentality, and that I think is ultimately the proof of the pudding, and I think more people are coming around to that. Posters, things like that, where people would do analog, you can take the same image, send it across digitally, and that now can be customized and tweaked regionally by the market, targeted by time of day, and I think those benefits are becoming much more real to people now, and I think with COVID, in particular, people took the time to think about how digital and technology play a role in my company and I think we'll start to continue to see even more disease of analog opportunities and more exploration of where some signage could be put into venues to drive the revenue and create some efficiencies.  Does it matter at all about focus? So if you're doing Motel 6 lobbies and groceries in New York state and cinema lobbies, those are pretty different kinds of environments. Does it matter in terms of sales and support that you get a little more focused on one particular vertical or a couple of others?  John McCauley: I think from the support side of things, there's a lot more commonality to the back end of how you support those signs because of this connectivity coming in, and I would say that would not have been the case years ago. It would have been more difficult to try to manage multiple like sectors, because maybe the differentiation of signage, maybe the CMS system you're using, a lot of that stuff I think has gone away, making it easier to potentially manage like a variety of verticals, but in particular for the sales side of things, we like to think about our areas of focus proximity to retail and purchase. So lots of times we're nestled within retail, right? You're in a grocery store, we have Redbox, you're there and then the ability to be close to purchase. So whether you're at a bar, you're obviously purchasing in the bar, but oftentimes and with your in hand and the ability to influence purchase, I think is a big deal in digital out-of-home and our network is set up in that way to be around that. We would think about retail and proximity to purchase as a really key component of our business.  You mentioned CMS, is it a case where you're using a partner firm's CMS or have you developed your own? John McCauley: We have our own CMS system and as we've taken on networks, we've had to work with other CMS systems, but ultimately I think in looking at the ad ecosystem, right? If you start at the far left with a DSP slide into the SSP, right? Then you have an ad server, then the CMS and the connectivity to the sign, I think for the most part people who are in the business that we're in, they want to have the CMS connected to the sign, right? Because that's really how you're controlling the sign. You're working with a third party on the signage and having that creates a larger scale and more efficiency. But at the end of the day, a lot of the CMS systems work the same.  We would obviously think ours is better because we were working to work on our signs and making sure they're doing what we want to do, but I think he needed to have flexibility. So at the end of the day if you want to be in the business, you have to have a wide lens and work hard to get people to consider your CMS system.  Do you find with the end user customers who you work with and Target in particular that there's any sort of demand that no, we need to work with this particular CMS partner, we need to use this particular smart display or operating system, or are they pretty open?  John McCauley: I think if you're inheriting something, there's already a bias, that, hey, we've used this and we're looking for a new operator, and I think there are companies that would come in and maybe operate that and certainly we consider everything. I think when things are starting anew then you have the opportunity to bring to bear the capabilities that the company may have around sourcing and designing signage that works as well as the CMS system. I think you need to be competitive, right? So if someone likes a particular CMS system, you understand what those needs are, and you obviously are going to be upgrading your CMS system to have those. So yeah, you need to be definitely paying attention to the marketplace. I think like in anything, whether it's this business or any business, if you have blinders on, and are rigid and say, this is the way we do it, then ultimately you're going to miss out on opportunities, right? Because the marketplace is going to dictate the services and the capabilities that you need to have.  Okay, so if I'm a digital place-based startup and I'm putting screens in, I'll make something up in ski resort lounges or something like that, don't think I'd do that one but anyways.  If I was being smart, I'd determine pretty quickly that I don't know what I'm doing with technology and it would be great if I had a partner who did all that stuff for me, and I just focused on sales or even had sales done by somebody else, and I just run around and get the real estate agreements, is that something you'll do where you just kind of take everything on? John McCauley: Absolutely. That's the type of thing we would put ourselves in position to do, and I think as you were indicating that sometimes we're seeing the customer saying, yes, I'll get the real estate because I have real estate, I want to convert some real estate, I want to better leverage my real estate, but ultimately we find that customers are trying to drive more revenue, right? Like in their existing business, how do they drive more revenue? I know you were using the ski resort, right? Can they get people to the lodge and buy more? Can they get them to do lessons? Ultimately the businesses are very focused on that.  Bringing advertising in, that's obviously very complimentary, and we find that when you're bringing advertisers into venues, particularly on the mix of them, local and regional play well because it's sorta like the company you keep. If there's some advertising in there, people go, oh, look at that. They're advertising at the ski resort. I think that is also things that the venues like, they like to be immersed within either the community or things that their customers are feeling that are current. You've grown a little bit in the media space through acquisition, is this an ongoing thing? Is Velocity looking for other networks that they may potentially acquire as well to build out their footprint?  John McCauley: I think we will always have our eyes on where we can be strategically accretive, particularly around these verticals and sectors and being close to retail and purchase and if there are things that pop up, we're also actively looking. I would say that that's very much in the forefront.  There's a lot of digital out-of-home networks out there. Generally speaking, do you get a sense of how they're doing? There's obviously some large ones that are doing very well, but it's been a rough couple of years for just about everybody. John McCauley: Yeah, I think heading into that quarter before COVID shut everything down, they were really coming off a record year, having a record quarter digital out-of-home, and then basically the world's shut down, and what we're seeing is that traffic is certainly back, people are out and about, depending on where you are in the country, it could be a little bit less but certainly people are feeling more comfortable being vaccinated, and what we're seeing is that a little bit of an over-indexing to transit and billboards. That's the safe play, right? People are out there driving. I think people are over-indexing there.  In that middle sort of ground, like street furniture is almost back to where they need to be from the pre COVID levels, and then the place-based, essential markets, whether it's grocery stores and others, they certainly have had the traffic, and they're shown a little quicker recovery and then things that would be considered more discretionary, whether they be movie theaters or people could argue bars, whether that's discretionary or not, but they serve an essential part of the communities. All of those types of things are definitely starting to show the rebounding and heading towards the trajectory of getting back to pre COVID levels.  But I think that's just the cadence of the way people have responded to it. They have to see that the traffic is steady and consistent, that we can weather the storms of having variance that really impacted the traffic, and then ultimately I think Q4 is a good time for it, right? Because at the end of the day, Q4 is when many companies, whether you're selling stuff, whether it be media or selling products, you need to get your impressions, you need to reach, you need to get impressions. You need to influence people who are in position to purchase. I think this quarter in particular will really start to provide the wind behind the sails heading into 2022. There was a DPAA conference last week which was really encouraging. It was well attended by 600 plus people in person at Chelsea Piers in New York. The energy was high, lots of clients there. Lots of things happening within the digital out-of-home, and I think there's a lot of optimism around place-based.  And I think you told me in our pre-call that Velocity is a member of the DPAA?  John McCauley: Yeah, we're members of the DPaA, and in my prior life, I was at the ScreenVision Media and I was on the board. So I'm very friendly and familiar with the leadership there, and I think they've done a very nice job.  Between the DPAA and the OAAA representing the industry, evangelizing the industry, making sure it's staying top of mind with agencies and brands and CMOs, I think that's an important component and I think there's the retail networks whether it be Walmart doing Walmart Connect or Walgreens or CVS or our efforts at retail, I think they have a very high value, and I think people are really paying attention to the ability to influence customers with wallets out.  I assume, right now, Velocity is its revenue and its focus is heavily in its traditional business of IT services managed services and so on, and that the media side of it is a fairly small percentage of the revenue.  Is there a longer-term vision where Velocity starts to become more and more a media company? John McCauley: We'd have to ask Greg and the leadership team about that, but I see a real enthusiasm for the media business and how the media business supports and can support other opportunities within the company, and so I think as a result of that, it's strategic importance will continue to grow and so will the revenue but we definitely want to be in the business, whether we're powering networks, whether we're monetizing networks, there's a lot of connectivity that we like being around the space and it plays very well into sort of the overall company of network services and then layering on the media services. All right. That was terrific. I appreciate you taking some time with me.

Straight from New York Fashion Week: There is no intro that will do this episode justice: THIS. IS. EPIC. In case you have been living under a rock, Holly and Nolan attended #NYFW last week, and managed to see just about every angle of it - from top designer shows to after parties to the #VMAs and even a #MetGala after party!!! Their asses were dragged all over town - from all the #COVID tests they had to take to all the amazing shows they got into!   Here is the list of designer shows attended – and this week, we spend ENDLESS time discussing IN DETAIL, because they were so freaking fabulous: #KateSpade (presentation) #Patbo #OscardelaRenta (presentation) #CynthiaRowley #ProenzaSchouler #Monse #Bulgari #FrederickAnderson #DennisBasso  #Naeem Khan #NY Mens Day featuring:  Fried Rice The Stolen Garment A. Potts Collection Carter Young It was so amazing to see all of this City back online again...  All of the designers, fashion editors, famous people, models, DJs, music artists, influencers, new designers, new brands, old friends and literally all of New York City.  (One of Holly's favs was Botox the Dog, look it up!)   All was going along swimmingly, until Nolan crossed his legs and audibly SPLIT THE ASS OF HIS PANTS OUT at the Frederick Anderson show. #CandaceBushnell was there, as well as some of the #Hermès heirs, and a sprinkling of fancy schmancy NYC socialites - all whom heard the whole deal. But not to be defeated, afterward, our Nolie then walked down Park Ave with his neon boxers hanging out, because he is NOT going to miss an after party. “It was funny, but it also sucked.” – Nolan Learn about all of the outrageous venues the designers chose to present this year: from a skate park in the rain at Chelsea Piers, to the #MeatpackingDistrict and #BatteryPark to #LittleIsland on the Hudson River, and even #RockefellerCenter – all gorgeous and fun settings that added spectacular layers to the art and fashion of the week.   We do have to take a moment to discuss Holly's PRIMA DONNA COMPLEX during the week. At the Monse show, she flat-out refused to give up her front row seat when some “manager” asked her (DUH).  But some poor saps did get moved, and then #ParisHilton and #NikkiHilton sat down from her...like 3 seats down. Paris - with her GARGANTUAN diamond engagement ring. Really, it was completely blinding. Holly is still talking about it.   Holly also lost her composure – but only for a second – while standing in line for a show (AFTER ON-DEMAND COVID TESTING, and registration, etc.) - and was cut off just as it was their turn. But, with one little Karen-esque scene, they all ended up with tickets to the VMAs, so you are welcome. I mean, it really was her best work.   Did we mention yet (only 3 times) that Holly and Nolan ended up at the #VMAs? It was BE-YOND, and then Nolan dumped his friends and got to go backstage and found better seats without the rest of the crew. Not that we are mad or anything. We were just 80% happy for him.    #BustaRhymes and #DojaCat ended up being favs of the night.  Be sure to check out Holly and Nolan's “David and Moira” moment. For the VMAs, Nolan says he ‘looked like a pimp' and Holly had a fashion identity crisis, which in the end, ending up being one of their better fashion moments after all. But there was some painful banter getting there.  OK, that's a wrap. As Holly says: “We had a great time, we met some new people. We reconnected with old folks that we knew. We have some new fans of the podcast. We have some newer friendships. So, it was great!”   LINKS DISCUSSED:  NYFW: https://nyfw.com/home/ Kate Spade: https://www.katespade.com/ Patbo : https://patbo.com/ Cynthia Rowley : https://cynthiarowley.com/ Proenza Schouler : https://www.proenzaschouler.com/ Monse: https://monse.com Bulgari: https://www.bulgari.com/en-us/watches/mens Frederick Anderson: https://www.frederickandersoncollection.com/ Dennis Basso: https://dennisbasso.com/ QUOTES: “The party was black tie, which is a big departure for me, because I'm a 95-year-old woman from Palm Beach on the inside. COLD OPEN WITH NYC SOUNDSCAPEFabian - NYC So what is it we are learning, what is the “there” that we're heading towards? Sam VO NARRATIONThat was Fabian and I sitting at Chelsea Piers, in New York City, where we met up about three months after Antarctica. This was us sitting and talking through memories, me digging in with more questions...Sam VO NARRATIONIt felt like a year ago, but last night was the vote, just 12 hours ago. By the time I crawled  into bed, it was really late. But it was a difficult night. The ship felt like it was in rough seas, and I spent most of the night listening to someone barf in the room next to me.[3:46] TAPE - Open frame Day after Dr. Karen Alexander bravely took the floor first. This is Purvi Gupta [7:43] TAPE - NYCOpens with an NYC soundscapeSam - Now I know I'm in complete sensory overload, much like Antarctica Fabian - Yeah, Rotheragate for me was such a defining momentYou know there plenty of people whose instinct to go with the majority rule, I didn't.My instinct, was, that if can't take all, can't take any. It was me who initiated the blind vote. It was me who goes upstairs and debates the fact that if a small number out of a whole doesn't want to go, then it is not right for women to go.And transformational change work doesn't happen with a textbook. It doesn't happen because you logically go A, B, C, D E, F, G. We dealt with the anger that flowed from that, but the next morning, I wish we had fully recorded what happened. You may be the only person who recorded what actually happened.Sam -  The Open Frame discussion?Fabian - That was transformationalSam - I've got itFabian - The poems, the poetry, the ...Sam - I've got it allFabian - See that is a transformational moment. No matter how much you didn't like it. You didn't like the anger, or the uncertainty. Guess what, that's where transformation change occurs. It doesn't happen, the clean, the tight, the controlled moments. It happens when you are forced to confront: I contributed to that, it was my anger, I didn't have to act that way….Sam - Yup Sam VO NARRATIONThe microphone was passed around the room, and I can only share a selection of everything that was said here…TAPE - SHORT SELECTSGaia  Fern [9:19] SamVO NARRATIONAt the end of the session, Dr Helen Corney read something she wrote on the ship.[12:05] Zodiac Landing through icebergs[14:06] Sam Tape - Whiskey IceSam VO NARRATIONAnd then, like the day could handle another twist, the Captain and Greg convened a meeting in the common room.  SFX - crowd room toneScene TAPE - Greg and Captain come and tell us we are going[14:52] Greg -  Eye oi oi oi. A heady 24 hours we've had.[19:15] Captain -It's a once in a lifetime. Even for us, I mean this is very unusual. Because usually the conditions down here are not favourable, let's say, the ice conditions, are always hard. [22:06] Laugh Therapy[24:50]  Rothera Landing [29:05] - New York City soundscape begins. Sam and Fabian go back to New York...Sam - So while I went in to make a 20 minute story, and it turned into a three and a hour epic. And I did this from my kitchen table, off my hard drive, with zero dollars funding, and you know, lots of good will. Fabian - But listening was never enough for you. Listening was never enough. You started the first podcast by putting yourself in the story. That's where it started. You're not a bystander. It's a myth for you. You're in boots and all.   [36:09] - Greg Um, I've left Antarctica a lot of times. And I've found in that I'll never know what I'll feel like when I take the first walk in the streets of Ushuaia. It becomes a bit of a mystery. And it changes from time to time.  [37:21] SAM  - Closing NarrationAt the end of a cinema verite documentary, there's often no obvious conclusion drawn--it was a moment in time, and that moment ended, and thus, so did the film. And while I love this for film, for a podcast, I still feel like I need to wrap, with some music...  …My instinct told me that GOING would put me inside a story that would grow and unfold, in real time. ...It's all brought me to a quiet place inside.Specifically, it brought me back to Antarctica. At a time when it felt like everything around me was breaking, I had that memory, that experience, to draw from. And at some point, after a bunch more reflection, I landed on this new, and final conclusion, that I want to share with you. What that was, and what this is, are the same, when you boil it down. It's a transformational learning experience.

For every Mary Engelbreit or Anna Bond, there are hundreds of smaller makers who are not only sustaining themselves by staying small, but wearing it as a badge of honor — no household name required. Joanna Alberti of PhiloSophie's got a huge boost early in her career, in 2005, when she was named one of Business Week's Top Five Entrepreneurs Under 25. That same year, she and her cards literally put themselves on the industry map with their catwalk debut at the LOUIE Awards gala, held at Manhattan's Chelsea Piers during what was, as far as I know, the only GCA-sponsored card fashion show to date. Buoyed by that promising start, Joanna has built her brand into a thriving business that "creates joy for others as well as myself." Over the years PhiloSophie's has released an impressive slew of custom creations, corporate collabs, and licensed gift offerings, all administered from Joanna's cozy studio/shop in Spencerport, New York. PhiloSophie's is populated by Joanna's very versatile spirit cartoon animal Sophie, who is much more than an icon ready to be personalized. Sophie owes her success to the fact that Joanna shaped her from the start into a vehicle for the upbeat, uplifting story Joanna wants to tell the world. Joanna shares how Sophie has consistently dispensed "aspirational positivity" — like the wisdom of not taking yourself too seriously, or the perils of bowing to your ego. Joanna describes how she has pivoted due to COVID-19 — and how spreading joy can be not just an act of resilience, but resistance as well. In this podcast, Patti Phillips is joined by Mollie Marcoux Samaan, the Ford Family Director of Athletics at Princeton University. Mollie’s journey to the AD chair is a unique one, having never worked in college athletics prior to accepting the role at Princeton. We hear this a lot on the men’s side, but not as much with women. Mollie did start her career at a boarding school where she held many jobs, including coaching the girls ice hockey and soccer teams. But she soon landed an entry level job at Chelsea Piers and began a 19-year run there that saw her elevated into several different leadership roles, including Exec VP of Chelsea Piers Connecticut. Mollie said her experience there, which included work in events, fundraising, marketing and business operations to name a few, more than prepared her to lead at Princeton. And not so much because of the work she was doing, but because she was constantly challenged to learn new skills in new areas, which forced her to continue to cultivate a strong growth mindset! In this conversation, Mollie gives great tips on hiring coaches -she’s had 14 successful hires in her tenure- and again, had not worked on a college campus previously,” , , and we discuss leading in times of crisis. Princeton was one of the first schools to cancel competitions when Covid hit, and she talks through that communication process, She also talks about the “MYTH of stress” - which also happens to be the title of one of her favorite books. She shares a TON of great advice here, like “play life like you play sports” which includes picking your teams wisely. Amen! We hope you enjoy our conversation, and remember, we are Women Leaders! A surprising development in the city's fight against billboard barges — The company floating the LED billboards in the waters around Manhattan has thrown in the towel after new state regulations pushed them back 1,500 feet from the shoreline. The advertising company promoting the billboard boats has now settled with the city and agreed to be subject to a $100,000 fine if they operate within New York waters. The barge will be relocated to Florida, where the company set up a similar barge along the Miami shoreline in 2016. The agreement with the city ends both the company's six-month fight with the city and the challenge they raised to the state law. As of October 11th, the company's website has been replaced with a generic image saying the site is down for maintenance. According to a presentation acquired by Digiday in January 2019, the company was touting their Hudson River and East River coverage to advertisers at the rate of $55,000 for a 30 second looping at on the banner boats, and they referenced the city's plan to continue developing the shoreline and the city's ferry system as reasons to advertise on LED billboard barges. 86 years ago on October 10, 1933 — A United Air Lines Boeing 247 from Newark, NJ exploded in what is believed to have been the first sabotage bombing of a commercial aircraft 56 years ago on October 14, 1963 — A New York Airways helicopter crashes just after takeoff from Idlewild (JFK) Airport, killing all six people aboard Double-check your speed if you're on the West Side Highway after October 12th — The city is dropping speeds from 35 to 30 mph on the West Side south of 59th Street beginning Saturday. The move comes as part of Vision Zero, a set of plans adopted by cities worldwide and introduced to New York by Mayor de Blasio in 2014. Vision Zero aims to eliminate pedestrian injuries and fatalities from vehicles, and the reduction in speed on the West Side Highway is meant to reduce the severity of vehicle impacts in areas south of 59th where the highway becomes street-level and pedestrians and cyclists frequently have to cross highway traffic at intersections, including busy areas like the Intrepid museum, Chelsea Piers, and Battery Park City. While drivers may rarely even have the opportunity to top 30 mph in rush hour traffic, the DOT will catch any drivers speeding using new speed cameras along the highway. If the area south of 59th Street sounds familiar, it's because it's the same area targeted by the upcoming congestion pricing plan, where a system of cameras will collect tolls on cars entering the area south of 61st Street. While vehicles staying on the FDR or West Side Highway will be exempt from congestion pricing, vehicles would also be monitored by cameras used for collecting tolls on vehicles exiting the West Side Highway once it reaches street level and begins exiting into the central business district south of 61st. The speed limits on all small streets within the city were dropped to 25 mph in November 2014. If you can't enjoy a low-speed drive on the West Side Highway and don't want to pay a congestion toll, consider a ride along the new 14th Street busway, which was finally able to open on October 3rd, and has been going swimmingly ever since. The street has been cleared of cars, leaving the buses to freely glide from stop to stop along 14th Street from Third Avenue to Ninth Avenue. Even though the implementation was delayed by three months by community groups, the first week of the busway seems to have had no noticeable impact on the surrounding streets. Bus riders on social media showed quiet, peaceful, and efficient rides during multiple times of day, with just a sparse few delivery trucks parked along the curb. It remains to be seen if the city's experiment with a busway can indeed increase the average speeds of buses on 14th Street while also not slowing down the surrounding area, but for right now, the first attempt at reorganizing 14th Street seems to be a success. I'll bring you the full Department of Transportation report once the trial period for the busway is complete. 16 years ago on October 15, 2003 — A Staten Island ferry strikes a pier at St. George Terminal, S.I., killing 11 people and injuring 165 of the 1,500 passengers In A Great Big City history: We're currently watching the MTA's new busway on 14th Street, but 3 years ago the MTA Sends Test Trains Along the New Second Avenue Subway. Train aficionado DJ Hammers on Youtube caught a glimpse of empty subway cars through a stairway at 63rd and Lex that were being run on the new Second Avenue line. The test cars were loaded with large boxes, presumably to simulate the weight of a fully-loaded train. The Second Avenue line would open three months later in January 2017. 8 years ago we were looking at the Rockefeller Center and Bryant Park Preparing Their Skating Rinks, and both rinks are on schedule this year as well! Rockefeller Center's rink opens on Saturday, October 12th, with regular admission being $25 for adults and $15 for children under 11 years old, and the Bryant Park rink will open as part of their Winter Village on October 31st, with free admission. 2 years ago, the NTSB was working to track down the drone pilot who was responsible for a drone colliding with an Army helicopter. The Blackhawk helicopter was hovering at about 300 feet near Midland Beach in Staten Island when a DJI Phantom drone struck the helicopter's blade and window frame, which obliterated the drone but did lodge a piece of debris in the helicopter that the NTSB would use to identify the owner of the drone. When interviewed by the NTSB, the drone operator admitted that he was flying the drone outside of his visual range and was unaware of the helicopter's flight path. Data from the drone operator's controller showed the drone's flight from Dyker Beach Park out over the water, along the Coney Island shore, and then looping back over open water toward Staten Island. It was at that point that the drone hit the helicopter. — Drone Pilot Interviewed After Collision with Army Helicopter A Great Big City has been running a 24-hour newsfeed since 2010, but the AGBC News podcast is just getting started, and we need your support. I had the most wonderful conversation with Drag Queen Chelsea Piers. Chelsea Piers was created by my fellow New Yorker and friend Justin Nako. As the Winner of the “Breakthrough Artist” at the 2013 Glam Awards, for over five years Chelsea has headlined shows at the Crown & Anchor and Stonewall Inn. She has made several appearances on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live and starred in last falls TV show Shade: Queens of NYC on Fusion TV. Chelsea and I were able to talk about her work, the multitasking that goes into a routine or show, the joys and struggles of Drag, as well as her upcoming shows.

Pop Up Retail is often used by marketers for seasonal items such as Halloween costumes and decorations, Christmas gifts and Christmas trees, or fireworks, allowing brands to capture foot traffic without committing to a long-term lease.Pop Up Retail began to expand in 2002 when discount retailer Target took over a 220-foot-long boat at Chelsea Piers for a two-week stay on the Hudson River that coincided with Black Friday and extended into other genres around 2009, when the Pop-up restaurant - temporary restaurants popping up in various locations - began growing in public interest and frequency. Here in Pittsburgh, Project Pop Up: Downtown is a program of the Mayor's Office, in conjunction with the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Department of City Planning and Pittsburgh Downtown PartnershipOver 90 artists, entrepreneurs, and non-profits submitted proposals to activate Downtown storefronts. At the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan, one athlete pulled a move that, so far as we know, no one else had ever done in all of human history. Surya Bonaly was not your typical figure skater.  She was black. She was athletic. And she didn’t seem to care about artistry.  Her performances – punctuated by triple-triple jumps and other power moves – thrilled audiences around the world.  Yet, commentators claimed she couldn’t skate, and judges never gave her the high marks she felt she deserved.  But Surya didn’t accept that criticism.  Unlike her competitors – ice princesses who hid behind demure smiles – Surya made her feelings known.  And, at her final Olympic performance, she attempted one jump that flew in the face of the establishment, and marked her for life as a rebel.  This week, we lace up our skates and tell a story about loving a sport that doesn’t love you back, and being judged in front of the world according to rules you don’t understand.  Produced by Matt Kielty with help from Tracie Hunte. The Chelsea Piers were once New York City’s portal to the world, a series of long docks along the west side of Manhattan that accommodated some of the most luxurious ocean liners of the early 20th century.  Passenger ocean travel became feasible in the mid 19th century due to innovations in steam transportation, allowing for both recreational voyages for the wealthy and a steep rise in immigration to the United States. The Chelsea Piers were the finest along Manhattan’s busy waterfront, built by one of New York’s greatest architectural firm as a way to modernize the west side.  Both the tragic tales of the Titanic and the Lusitania are also tied to the original Chelsea Piers. But changes in ocean travel and the financial fortunes of New York left the piers without a purpose by the late 20th century. How did this important site for transatlantic travel transform into one of New York’s leading modern sports complexes? ALSO: The death of Thirteenth Avenue, an avenue you probably never knew New York City ever had! www.BoweryBoysHistory.com Support the show.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Biggest Loser Trainer Cara Castronuova. Neil will interview Cara to find out about her boxing career, The Biggest Loser experience, and her foundation.   A two-time Golden Gloves winner and certified trainer once ranked nationally by USA Boxing, Cara Castronuova is popularly known as one of the newest trainers on The Biggest Loser. Castronuova was born and raised in Elmont, New York, with three younger brothers. She began boxing at the age of five in the family garage with her father, a former Marine. She also wrestled in high school and in college. She graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. She began her boxing career as a youth boxing trainer. Soon, she started entering local bouts, winning her first fight in 2002 at the NY Empire State Games in Syracuse. She also was a volunteer for a government-funded program designed to teach troubled youth the virtues of boxing and keep them off the streets. Later, while working as a personal fitness and boxing trainer at popular sports clubs in the New York City area, like Chelsea Piers and Gleason's Boxing Gym, she used fighting and boxing to encourage clients to “find their warrior within.” While continuing to train clients, Castronuova kept boxing competitively, winning a pair of “Silver Gloves” in 2004, the second-place prize in the Golden Gloves competition. Determined to redeem herself, Castronuova came back one year later and won her first New York Golden Gloves championship at Madison Square Garden in 2005 in front of a televised, capacity crowd.

New York City has no shortage of sites that have a direct connection to the Titanic. (See our handy map of some of them below.) One such landmark is the Jane Hotel, formerly known as the American Seamen’s Friend Society Sailors’ Home and Institute, which on April 19, 1912 was the site of a memorial service for surviving sailors rescued from the Titanic. The brick neo-Classical building on the West Side Highway and Jane Street was built in 1907-'08 by a Presbyterian group called the American Seamen’s Friends Society. William A. Boring designed the sailors' home. Boring was the former partner of Boring & Tilton, which designed the immigration station on Ellis Island. "One of the identifying characteristics of the building is this wonderful octagonal tower in the corner which used to have a light beacon on top so it looked like a lighthouse," said Andrew Berman, the executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation. "It both symbolically and practically was meant to be a place that sort of called out to sailors as a safe port. And in this case, it was a safe port for the crewmembers of the Titanic who were rescued from the disaster." On a recent Thursday night, more than 100 people gathered in the Jane's decadent ballroom to understand the connection between the Greenwich Village spot and the ship's surviving sailors. The event, called "Titanic & The Village," was organized by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and featured a talk and book-signing by Titanic scholars Jack Eaton and Charlie Haas. Learn about the Jane's history and connection to the Titanic by clicking the audio above. Also check out our map of New York City Titanic landmarks based on the talk or scroll down to see some of the "bon mots" from the evening from Haas, Eaton and New Yorkers who attended the event. Bon Mots Charlie Haas, co-founder and president of the Titanic International Society, on room rates at the sailors' home in 1910: "The average seaman paid only a quarter a night and there were larger rooms at 50 cents per night for the officers and those included shower baths. You'll notice also that there were facilities here for billiards, a bowling alley, shower baths, a swimming pool, banking facilities and an assembly hall ... which I suspect may have been this room right here." Jack Eaton, co-founder and historian of the Titanic International Society, on an artifact in New Jersey that some claim is a piece of a Titanic lifeboat: "We have had to put the cease-and-desist order on this twice within the last 10 years. It is not a Titanic lifeboat. However the mystery of the Titanic and the aura make people believe with just a little urging from the entrepreneur that this is a Titanic lifeboat. Don't believe it." Long-time Titanic fan Greg Shutters on the centennial: "100 years -- it’s a big one. I was planning on throwing a Titanic party of my own, so maybe that will come to pass." Richard Currie on how he got interested in the Titanic: "My birthday is April 15 and that’s the night it went down. So I’ve had this sort of passing interest." Jeffrey Ryan, who learned about the ship from reading Walter Lord's 1955 book, "A Night To Remember," on his fandom: "I just bought something on eBay -- a deck plan of the Carpathia ... so I’m a collector." Sumi Vatsa on gathering in honor of the centennial: "I thought it was a little strange, 'Are we commemorating the disaster?' Then it was like, 'I understand what we’re commemorating.' It's actually very inspirational ... it’s definitely much more than Kate and Leo on the boat, you know?" Pat Bartels on the Jane Hotel's history: "To see the development of the Chelsea Piers and this particular building, which we’ve looked at for years saying, What a shame, it’s such a dump,' and to find out it’s such a wonderful place, is, you know, it’s really fun."
