It’s Oscars Season, which means millions of Americans are flocking to movie theaters, sizing up the films that will dominate conversation in 2018. According to April Reign, the latest guest on Washington City Podcast, 2018 isn’t shaping up to be a good year for marginalized communities. Reign created the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag and co-created #NoConfederate. The longtime D.C.-area resident talked to City Paper’s Kayla Randall about the effect these hashtags have had on the film industry and diversity in filmmaking in general. The pair also talked about hashtag activism. Subscribe to the show on iTunes to ensure you get all our episodes as soon as they come out. (Non-Apple users can use this link.)

After the events of Charlottesville what has changed or SHOULD change for the start of the school year? How do we navigate family legacies if you're descended from the enslaved or have Confederate ancestors? What if these issues are in your face on campus? These debates hit close to home for PhDiva Liz and Dr. Jill Spivey Caddell at UNC Chapel Hill where the Confederate statue Silent Sam stands. Topics include Jill's research on Civil War monuments, revisionist histories, #NoConfederate, and the problems with teaching and representing the Civil War. How do you navigate being a Southerner in the North? Do monuments reflect the past, the present, or the hopes of the future? (Check out Charles Chesnutt's short stories and novels!) The ACLU got a lot of heat last week when their neutral free speech stance had them defending the alt right in Charlottesville. We talk to ACLU Senior Staff Attorney Lee Rowland about the organization’s decision to change course and not defend groups that protest with firearms and the effect that will have on their methods going forward. Historian Mark Bray teaches Kamau and Hari how to pronounce Antifa and what the group is all about. And April Reign, a co-creator of trending hashtag #NoConfederate, talks about why the 'Game of Thrones' producers should think twice about creating a TV show where black people are enslaved again.Follow our guests!Lee Rowland: https://www.aclu.org/bio/lee-rowlandMark Bray (@Mark__Bray): https://markmbray.wordpress.comApril Reign (@ReignOfApril): http://www.reignofapril.comFor updates on us, follow Politically Re-Active on Facebook and Twitter (@PoliticReActive.)
