The recent announcement by the ruling government in the United Kingdom of tax rates – including a hike to 40% for remote gaming - for the gambling industry was met with an avalanche of reaction not only in the UK but other parts of the world with regulated gaming environments. So, we asked Dan Waugh of Regulus Partners – whose coverage of the international gambling landscape is a must-read (to subscribe, drop an email to dan.waugh@reguluspartners.com) – for his thoughts on the brouhaha around the tax hike and its potential impact on regulated gambling and the companies servicing the industry within the UK and to other parts of the globe. We also asked the long-time follower of the gaming industry about jurisdictions that are getting it right with their regulatory frameworks, and to weigh in on the regulated vs. black market debate around the world. Waugh also had some words of wisdom for the folks in charge of creating Alberta's regulatory gaming regime, opening date still TBD. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In the early morning hours of October 8, 1964, thirty-four-year-old housewife and mother of three Lucille Miller placed a frantic call to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department to report that there had been a car accident on remote Banyan Street and her husband had been killed. When deputies arrived at the scene, the car was still in flames and, as Lucille had described, her husband Gordon “Cork” Miller was in the passenger seat, nearly unrecognizable from the extent of the fire damage. The evidence at the scene appeared to support Lucille's version of events; the car had gone off the road while they were driving and caught fire. Lucille managed to get out of the car, but Cork was unconscious and she was unable to get him out. Less than twelve hours later, however, Lucille's story began to fall apart and by the end of the day she was arrested for the murder of her husband. At first, the case against Lucille Miller seemed relatively straightforward; she killed her husband for the insurance money and to pursue a relationship with another man. But as the investigation unfolded and investigators began digging into the Miller's lives, the story became significantly more complicated and no one seemed able to decide whether Cork's death was in fact a murder.Want to buy our GORGEOUS Tarot Deck designed by the incredibly talented Marisa Aragón Ware? News and Updates: An AI actress named Tilly Norwood, created by Dutch producer Eline Van der Velden, ignited outrage in Hollywood. SAG-AFTRA condemned her as a threat to human performers, calling her “a computer-generated character” built on unpaid human work. Stars including Whoopi Goldberg and Emily Blunt slammed the concept as unethical and dehumanizing. OpenAI's Sora 2 marks a major leap in AI video generation, producing realistic clips with accurate physics, synchronized sound, and multi-shot continuity. While hailed as groundbreaking, experts say full movie production remains far off, as the model is limited to 60-second clips and risks recycling existing footage. To avoid new lawsuits, OpenAI will let copyright holders opt out of Sora 2 recreations of their IP. Sam Altman proposed revenue sharing for rightsholders who allow their characters to appear, after Disney and others already withdrew consent. Altman framed it as “interactive fan fiction,” but critics called it damage control. Sora 2's new app allows users to make hyperrealistic AI videos using friends' likenesses through “cameos.” Early users call it “mind-blowing,” but critics warn it enables deepfakes, scams, and humiliation. OpenAI added parental controls and teen limits but faces scrutiny over safety and consent. Commentators blasted Sora 2 as “infinite AI slop,” accusing OpenAI of abandoning its mission to “benefit humanity.” The app's addictive, TikTok-style feed and rampant copyright and deepfake issues drew comparisons to social media's worst excesses, despite OpenAI's safety claims. Sam Altman downplayed concerns of an AI bubble, admitting investors will “overinvest and lose money,” but expressing confidence AI will drive massive long-term growth. Analysts warned a crash could hit the global economy as AI investments now outpace consumer spending in U.S. GDP growth.

NPR asks, "could the next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman" be Tilly Norwood? Here's the catch: Norwood isn't human; she is an artificial intelligence creation generated by a Dutch AI lab. Last week, the lab announced that their AI “actor” had received attention from multiple talent agents. They want their creation to become a household name, a mega-star. But some human performers are outraged, calling this story a threat to their livelihoods while asking who would want to watch AI avatars. Our guests discuss the future of acting. Our guests: Nicole Cyrille, actor, chair of the SAG-AFTRA Performers with Disabilities Committee - Los Angeles, and vice chair of the SAG-AFTRA Performers with Disabilities Committee - National Reuben J. While critics are in an uproar, Trump's strategy is sparking a major debate: Is this a smart move to outmaneuver China, or a dangerous opening for espionage and influence? Chang lays out the risks, the opportunities, and the hard truths about China's long-term project to undermine America.

On today's podcast: 1) Nvidia shares drop after the chip giant signals a slowdown in A-I spending. Meanwhile, markets shrug off the Nvidia disappointment and trade near record highs. Stocks shook off an initial drag from Nvidia Corp.’s sales outlook missing lofty expectations, indicating that momentum behind the record-breaking rally remains intact. The yield on 30-year Treasuries fell four basis points to 4.89% as pressure on long-dated debt eased, and European bonds staged a broad advance.2) US companies plan to buy back shares at a historic pace, a sign of Corporate America’s confidence in the economy. Announced buybacks surpassed $1 trillion on Aug. 20, marking the shortest amount of time needed to reach that level, according to data compiled by Birinyi Associates.3) The head of the CDC is fired in a dispute over Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s vaccine policy. The Trump administration fired CDC Director Susan Monarez just weeks into her tenure, and at least three senior CDC leaders, including Demetre Daskalakis, Deb Houry, and Dan Jernigan, told coworkers they were resigning, citing reasons such as the "weaponizing of public health." The removal of Monarez and the resignations of senior leaders have intensified concerns about scientific integrity at the public health agency and underscore the growing distrust between many longtime agency scientists and Secretary Kennedy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When GPT-5 was released last week, the internets were in an UPROAR. One of the main reasons? With the better model, came a new behavior. And in losing GPT-4o, people feel they lost a friend. Their only friend. Or their therapist. Yikes. For this Hot Take Tuesday, we're gonna say why using AI as a therapist is a really, really bad idea. In this unfiltered episode of the Opie Radio podcast, Opie and Ron the Waiter dive into a whirlwind of topics with their signature humor and candor. They unpack the Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad controversy, debating its "great jeans/genes" wordplay—misinterpreted by some as a nod to eugenics or racial insensitivity, while others see it as a clever marketing ploy to spark buzz. The conversation shifts to a serious Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Harlem, tied to the city's iconic water towers, exposing concerns about aging infrastructure and water safety. They also tackle the unintended consequences of immigration policies, including a quiet Venezuelan Music Festival due to ICE raid fears, and the chaos caused by an AI tool named Elsie fabricating healthcare research. Political frustrations surface with critiques of Kamala Harris' campaign missteps, Trump's immigration tactics, and the economic impacts of tariffs. Woven throughout are personal anecdotes, from Opie's quirky lemon potato recipe to tales of overbearing mothers and mob encounters, delivering a lively mix of pop culture, serious issues, and laugh-out-loud moments.
Rich dives deep into the issues shaping the headlines and the heart of the nation. Gabriella Hoffman from the Independent Women's Forum Center for Energy and Conservation unpacks the Trump administration's repeal of an Obama-era EPA policy, and how this shift puts credible science ahead of climate alarmism. Salvador Litvak, comedian & award-winning filmmaker and author of Let My People Laugh, reflects on the role of Jewish humor in culture—and weighs in on the controversy surrounding the latest American Eagle ad. Then, Daniel Sanabria from Youth For Christ NYC shares a powerful real-life redemption story, as his ministry helps guide two siblings from incarceration to a new path of freedom and hope.
