INGREDIENTS OF THE DAY: None Throughout both modern and ancient human history harmful ingredients, intentionally or unintentionally, have wound up in commercial foods. On the intentional side, that practice is called swindling or introducing improvements to make products better. Either way, the object is to make more money. On the unintentional side, the addition of poisons to foods is accidental. In this episode, a few examples of the former are examined taken from the early 20th century. The problem in America is, America's been in denial about its problems. And that's a problem. America doesn't have a race problem, in reality there's been catastrophes visited upon Black people. Catastrophes visited on Indigenous brothers and sisters. Catastrophes visited on Latino brothers and sisters. Catastrophes visited on working people. Catastrophes visited on women of all colors. We can go on and on. This week on Making Contact, we bring you a talk from noted author, scholar, and self-described intellectual freedom fighter, Dr. Cornel West speaking at the Guild Theater in Sacramento, California in 2023. In his discussion, West uses America's music legacy as a way to explore catastrophic conditions brought on by our denial of the funk, seen through the impacts of racism on the nation's health. The Niche Guys reach their season finale in style! With Puppets, musical numbers, beers, horror, zombies, Judy Dench spreading her legs… this one got away from us. Dr. Linda Mercadante a Distinguished Research Professor, Emerita, Methodist Theological School in Ohio. and founder of HealthyBeliefs discussed her journey from being "spiritual but not religious" to becoming a scholar of religion. She argues for more research and understanding into the growing numbers of Americans identifying as such. In her book, "Beliefs without Borders: Inside the Minds of the Spiritual But Not Religious," Mercadante shares her research findings from a listening tour across the US, Canada, Mexico, and beyond. She discovered that while sociologically, people identifying as “spiritual but not religious” are quite different, they share many common beliefs — including rejecting the word "God" while still believing in something bigger than themselves. ** Hey guys, Henry here - really sorry for the delay on this one, various life-things got in the way and to give full transparency, I've been in a slight creative slump in the latter end of January. BUT! I've powered through to bring you our 2022 round-up awards! I hope you all enjoy it. We'll be back in two weeks with our next regular-style-episode. Thank you so much for listening and for your patience. We love you. :) ** Welcome once again to the second annual Niche Guys year end awards show! Once again the boys run down their 2022 top 3 things for Games, TV, Movies, Music and Anime, making sure to get the humidity up in the venue and get you all nice and sweaty. In this episode Henry becomes a real bean-boy and helps out his stuck step-potbro. Alex regrets being too drunk to remember a 2 hour movie and not being drunk enough to forget a 4 hour long movie. And the boys talk about the Job Food Chain and keep in all the extra beer-can snaps and chair creaks, for all the dirt and mess you would expect from a real awards show. Have you ever been to therapy or counseling? Have you ever wondered what it may be like? In this episode Krystal, Gabby, and guest Laura, PLPC (aka therapist), break down their perspectives on therapy. Laura explains the differences between peer counseling, counseling, and therapy. In this episode, Gabby and Krystal talk about why fake life rules are absolute nonsense.
