Complex and talented, Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932) was one of the first American authors to write for both Black and white readers. Born in Cleveland to "mixed race" parents, Chesnutt rejected the opportunity to "pass" as white, instead remaining in the Black community throughout his life. His life in the South during Reconstruction, and his knowledge of both Black and white communities, made him one of America's sharpest observers of race in America during the postwar years. In this episode, Jacke talks to Chesnutt scholar Tess Chakkalakal about her book A Matter of Complexion: The Life and Fictions of Charles W. Chesnutt, which the New York Times Book Review says "asks the reader to see the 'First Negro Novelist' as he saw himself: a writer and student of American letters at a time when the literary marketplace struggled to take him seriously...a timely reminder of the influence of artists like Charles W. Chesnutt today, when perhaps only literature has the power to sustain us." PLUS: John Goodby (Dylan Thomas: A Critical Life) stops by to discuss his choice for the last book he will ever read. Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: More Cherokee County Roads to be Resurfaced by End of The Year Cherokee County Commissioners approved a $4 million contract with Baldwin Paving Company, Inc. for the 2024 resurfacing project, covering 11.681 miles of county-maintained roads. This initiative, part of a 25-year pavement life cycle plan, includes prominent subdivisions like Riverlake Landing, Golden Hills, and BridgeMill. Funding includes $3,297,747 from Georgia DOT's 2024 Local Road Assistance grant, with no local match required. Completion is slated by year-end 2024. An intergovernmental agreement amendment with Canton was also approved, covering 2.616 miles of city roads like Reservoir Drive and Marietta Highway, reimbursed by Canton for approximately $1 million. STORY 2: Mark Chesnutt Cancels Canton River Rock Show and Other Concerts Mark Chesnutt, scheduled to headline Canton's River Rock Music Fest on July 27, had to cancel due to recovering from emergency quadruple bypass surgery. His management cited the surgery and necessary recuperation time as reasons for the cancellation. Chesnutt expressed gratitude for support and understanding from fans and looked forward to returning soon. Canton officials are collaborating with his management to find a replacement headliner and will announce details shortly. For updates on the festival, visit ExploreCantonGA.com or CantonGA.gov. STORY 3: Free Microchipping Available for Cherokee County Pets Cherokee County is offering free microchipping for pets ahead of July 4th to prevent them from getting lost due to fireworks. The initiative aims to increase the chances of reuniting lost pets with their owners. Residents can visit the Cherokee County Animal Shelter in Canton from Tuesday to Saturday without an appointment. Microchipping is quick and involves minimal paperwork. If a pet goes missing, owners can fill out a form online or visit the shelter. Microchipped pets can be scanned to retrieve owner information swiftly. County offices, including the shelter, will be closed on July 4, but lost pet forms will still be processed. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Back in a moment. Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Ball Ground Looking to Roll Back Milage Rate The Ball Ground City Council plans to maintain its millage rate for fiscal year 2025 at a "rollback" rate of 3.732, ensuring no property tax increase for residents. This rate matches the amount needed to generate the same property tax revenue as the previous year. City Manager Eric Wilmarth confirmed this decision, noting that it will result in approximately $1,001,000 in property tax revenue. Due to the required publication of a five-year tax history in the Cherokee Tribune, setting the millage rate has been rescheduled to July 11. The council previously approved a $6.3 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year in May. STORY 5: Cherokee County Man Convicted of Terroristic Threats Christopher Dean Bowling, 29, of Waleska, was convicted of terroristic threats by a Cherokee County jury following an incident last summer. The conviction stems from a domestic dispute where Bowling prevented his partner from leaving their home during an argument, which led to a disconnected 911 call. Evidence included a disturbing four-minute audio recording where Bowling allegedly threatened and strangled the victim. Despite the victim's reluctance for legal action, the prosecution emphasized the severity of emotional abuse and potential danger in the relationship. Bowling was acquitted of aggravated assault and cruelty to children charges but faced sentencing on June 21. For support in abusive situations, Cherokee Family Violence Center can be contacted at 770-479-1703, with emergency assistance available through 911. Commercial: INGLES 4 STORY 6: Kids Participate in Cherokee County Safety Town Over 100 children have participated in Cherokee County Safety Town this month, a program designed for incoming kindergarten students to learn about safety through interactive lessons. Hosted by Safe Kids Cherokee County and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, this marks the 20th year of the initiative. The program covers a range of safety topics such as road safety, fire safety, and poison safety, complemented by crafts, games, and simulated traffic scenarios. Teen counselors assist in activities and can earn community service hours. Participants receive certificates upon completing the week-long program, supported by various local agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Cherokee Sheriff's Office. STORY 7: Work Set to Begin on Highway 140 and Batesville Road Intersection The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a $5.8 million construction contract with Bartow Paving Company, Inc. to enhance the intersection of Highway 140 and Hickory Road/Batesville Road. This project aims to improve traffic flow by adding additional thru-lanes on both roads and dedicated right-turn lanes on all sides of the intersection. Funding includes $2 million from the Georgia Department of Transportation's Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant, with the remaining $3.8 million coming from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds. The construction, identified as a priority in a 2019 corridor study, is expected to begin soon and last between 18 to 24 months. We'll have closing comments after this. In this novel, Chesnutt described the hopelessness of Reconstruction in a post-Civil War South that was bent on reestablishing the former status quo and rebuilding itself as a region of the United States where new forms of "slavery" would replace the old. This novel illustrated how race hatred and the impotence of a reluctant Federal Government trumped the rule of law, ultimately setting the stage for the rise of institutions such as Jim Crow, lynching, chain gangs and work farms--all established with the intent of disenfranchising African Americans. - Summary by James K. In anticipation of the launch of Season Six – in just a few weeks! – we are sharing favorites from our expanding archive. With this episode we return to an oft-cited conversation from our first year about Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858-1932), a figure who remains central to nineteenth-century African American literary studies. Scholars have drawn attention to the subtlety, wit, and complexity of Chesnutt's stories, novels, and essays, which were – at one time – regarded as pandering and old-fashioned. Yet, despite the ongoing boom in Chesnutt scholarship, we still know relatively little about his life, and the general reading public rarely encounters his work. Tess Chakkalakal (Bowdoin College) hopes to change that with her biography of Chesnutt aimed toward a general readership (forthcoming from St. Martin's-McMillian, 2024). In this episode, she sits down with Mark Sussman to talk about discoveries in Chesnutt's life, the challenges of writing for a general audience, and why Chesnutt matters now. This episode originally appeared on January 15, 2018.

In this week's episode we're featuring the debut album for Beaumont's George Dearborne: "Old Brown Bottle" (2020). Make no mistake though, this is not Dearborne's first rodeo. Embedded in the area music scene during the 70s and 80s, Dearborne met a teenage Mark Chesnutt when he himself was only a few years older. Years later, Dearborne and his renowned band "Branded" would become the house act at the Beaumont's legendary low-slung honky tonk Cutter's - a position held by Chesnutt only a few years prior. Nashville didn't work out for Dearborne however, and he gave music away for 22 years, picking it up again in 2016 and reforming "Branded" with new and all-star personnel. Fast making a name for himself around the Lone Star State, "Old Brown Bottle" is a welcome debut for traditional country fans who enjoy straight ahead country shuffles with a good sense of fun. The best pickers money can buy appeared on "Old Brown Bottle" and you can hear the quality with every track. Highlights are numerous: the steel guitar intro from Mike Johnson on "One More", Wes Hightower's blending with Dearborne's lead vocals on "A Fire That Just Won't Burn" and two Ray Price shuffles are obvious standouts.

We had a great conversation with Casey Chesnutt (Mark Chesnutt's Son) on The Chris & Sandy Show. We talked about careers, family, music, sacrifices, he told some great stories plus a whole lot more! We also talked about his latest single, Even Texas Couldn't Hold Her.Casey Chesnutt is a live music entertainer, recording artist and songwriter. His influence varies from red dirt, classic country, and rock. Casey follows in the foot steps of his father, Country music legend Mark Chesnutt. Casey began his career at the early age of 15 and quickly began making the most out of what Southeast Texas had to offer local musicians. From the 1880s to the early 1900s, a particularly turbulent period of U.S. race relations, the African American novel provided a powerful counternarrative to dominant and pejorative ideas about blackness. In Afro-Realisms and the Romances of Race: Rethinking Blackness in the African American Novel (LSU Press, 2020), Melissa Daniels-Rauterkus uncovers how black and white writers experimented with innovative narrative strategies to revise static and stereotypical views of black identity and experience. In this provocative and challenging book, Daniels-Rauterkus contests the long-standing idea that African Americans did not write literary realism, along with the inverse misconception that white writers did not make important contributions to African American literature. Taking up key works by Charles W. Chesnutt, Frances E. W. Harper, Pauline Hopkins, William Dean Howells, and Mark Twain, Daniels-Rauterkus argues that authors blended realism with romance, often merging mimetic and melodramatic conventions to advocate on behalf of African Americans, challenge popular theories of racial identity, disrupt the expectations of the literary marketplace, and widen the possibilities for black representation in fiction. Combining literary history with close textual analysis, Daniels-Rauterkus reads black and white writers alongside each other to demonstrate the reciprocal nature of literary production. Moving beyond discourses of racial authenticity and cultural property, Daniels-Rauterkus stresses the need to organize African American literature around black writers and their meditations on blackness, but she also proposes leaving space for nonblack writers whose use of comparable narrative strategies can facilitate reconsiderations of the complex social order that constitutes race in America. With Afro-Realisms and the Romances of Race, Daniels-Rauterkus expands critical understandings of American literary realism and African American literature by destabilizing the rigid binaries that too often define discussions of race, genre, and periodization. Hi. I'm Tonia Thompson, writer and creator of NIGHTLIGHT: The Black Horror Podcast. This week, we have another story from Charles Chesnutt. Charles was the first widely recognized Black American fiction writer. Like The Gray Wolf's Ha'nt, this story is also from his collection: Conjure Woman. The Conjurer's Revenge is one of my favorite stories of the collection, but truly, all of his stories are excellent. In a time when most African Americans were writing about the harsh life of Black people in America, Charles wrote--and preserved--our traditions. Fiction can be a luxury in difficult times, and at a time when Black people were fighting for their very lives, Charles Chesnutt saw the role fiction could play in healing a nation. And, for that, I am thankful. And now, Conjurer's Revenge by Charles Chesnutt. The Conjurer's Revenge on Project Gutenberg Thanks to our newest patron, Kay. We couldn't do this without you.
