This week, our Gabfest panel includes Steve and guest hosts Nadira Goffe and Laura Miller with a typically eclectic collection of topics. First up, Dana hops on the call to decode the unspoken truths and dream imagery of Kleber Mendonça Filho's film The Secret Agent. Set in 1970s Recife, Brazil and starring a very charming Wagner Moura, the film is a heterodox brew of political thriller, magical realism, and attentive character study about the everyday surreality of life under dictatorship.Next, it's back to Westeros with a discussion of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a Game of Thrones prequel set 100 years before the original show based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy epic. Grounded and surprisingly funny, don't expect dragons in this knight's tale. Finally, they turn to “Gluttons for Punishment,” a recent Vulture article by Lila Shapiro about UPenn religious studies professor Justin McDaniel using some extreme, unorthodox measures to get his students to finish books. In an exclusive bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, the panel talks to Laura about the secret pleasures of wood stacking as discussed in her recent piece “The Art of the Holzhausen.”EndorsementsNadira: Some melancholy shoegaze pop from Scandinavia, specifically the albums Goodbyehouse by Snuggle and Big City Life by Smerz.Laura: The novels of Robert Jackson Bennett in his Shadow of the Leviathan series including Hugo-winning The Tainted Cup and A Drop of Corruption.Steve: The Substack essay “The Wall Looks Permanent Until It Falls Down” by Adam Bonica about the cost of American exceptionalism. And a bonus one from Dana: Pictures of Ghosts, the documentary by The Secret Agent director Kleber Mendonça Filho about Recife, Brazil in the 1970s.--Email us your thoughts at culturefest@slate.com. We're taking a trip to The Bone Temple this week on Breakfast All Day, but don't worry. Ralph Fiennes has great taste in music, it'll be super fun. Here's what we've reviewed lately: 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE. This picks up right where Danny Boyle's "28 Years Later" left off in 2025, but Nia DaCosta's film is very different: thrilling and terrifying in its own way, but also more somber, but also funny ...? Fiennes is insane here. In theaters. THE RIP. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck lead an all-star cast as Miami cops whose team stumbles upon a massive stash of drug money in this twisty thriller. This is the kind of substantial, mid-budget action movie we used to see a lot of in the '80s and '90s. Streaming now on Netflix. THE SECRET AGENT. We knew we wanted to catch up with Brazil's entry in the Oscar international feature category, and this was the perfect time. It just won Golden Globes for best motion picture - non-English language and best actor for Wagner Moura. We admire it but don't love it as much as our fellow critics do. In theaters. Movie News LIVE! Always a good time on Fridays. Among this week's topics were Kathleen Kennedy leaving LucasFilm; "Dune: Part Three" and "Avengers: Doomsday" competing on Dec. 18, aka "Dunesday"; and Matthew McConaughey trademarking his famous phrase, "Alright, alright, alright." On a very special episode of Men in Blazers, Golden Globe winning actor Wagner Moura sits down with Rog to discuss his film The Secret Agent, including why being a football fan gives him an advantage as an actor and the national pride he feels in representing Brazil. Plus, Wagner reveals the role football plays in his life, his ultimate Brazil five-a-side team, and dives deep on the "Sad Escobar" meme.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode, I'm sitting down with my real-life bestie, Lacea Grimes, who went from having zero social media presence to closing over 33 transactions in just two years using a simple "day in the life" framework. She's sharing how she overcame the paralyzing fear of being on camera and the exact mindset shift she used to turn her authentic daily routine into a lead-generation machine. The untold history of a top-secret operation in the run-up to D-Day in which American flyers and Allied spies carried out some of the most daring cloak-and-dagger operations of World War II.In 1943, the OSS-precursor to the CIA-came up with a plan to increase its support to the French resistance forces that were fighting the Nazis. To start, the OSS recruited some of the best American bomber pilots and crews to a secret airfield twenty miles west of London and briefed them on the intended mission. Given a choice to stay or leave, every airman volunteered for what became known as Operation Carpetbagger.Their dangerous plan called for a new kind of flying: taking their B-24 Liberator bombers in the middle of the night across the English Channel and down to extremely low altitudes in Nazi-occupied France to find drop zones in dark fields. On the ground, resistance members waited to receive steel containers filled with everything from rifles and hand grenades to medicine and bicycle tires. Some nights, the flyers also dropped Allied secret agents by parachute to assist the French partisans.Though their story remained classified for more than fifty years, the Carpetbaggers ultimately received a Presidential Unit Citation from the US military, which declared: "it is safe to say that no group of this size has made a greater contribution to the war effort." Along with other members of the wartime OSS, they were also awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.Based on exclusive research and interviews, the definitive story of these heroic flyers-and of the brave secret agents and resistance leaders they aided-can now be told. Written in Bruce Henderson's "spellbinding" (USA TODAY) prose, Midnight Flyboys is an astonishing tale of patriotism, courage, and sacrifice.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
In diesem Sinne: Cheers. Nick teams up with film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy for an expanded round of movie talk as the year end release rush hits full speed. They dig into a packed slate that includes the newest chapter in James Cameron's Avatar saga, Timothée Chalamet's latest turn in Marty Supreme, and Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson fronting a Neil Diamond tribute band in Song Sung Blue. The conversation also covers Will Arnett as a down-on-his-luck stand-up comic in Is This Thing On?, Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid, and the Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent, with a few more titles folded in along the way. With so many major releases landing at once, the discussion stretches out and takes its time, offering thoughtful reactions and plenty of back and forth between three longtime critics who know each other's tastes well. Esmeralda sits this one out, but the movie talk more than fills the space as the holiday film season kicks into high gear. [Ep 413]

Most recently, he won best actor at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for “The Secret Agent.” Set during the waning days of Brazil's repressive military dictatorship, the movie is a deeply personal one for Wagner who was born at the tail end of the regime. He joins Tom Power to talk about “The Secret Agent,” how movies can help the self-esteem of a country, and why some politicians are afraid of artists.
