Biracial, binational, queer human right activist Jason Jones began his lawsuit against Trinidad and Tobago's British colonial ban on same-gender sex in 2017. It was struck down in 2018, but an appeals court recently overturned that ruling and reinstated the law. Jones has one more chance to appeal that decision (interviewed by David Hunt). He can't imagine doing such a terrible thing, but Eddie hasn't been himself lately. Eddie's anxiety is nothing new to Pär, the one Eddie calls his Other, who protects Eddie from truths he's too sensitive to face. Or so Pär says. Troubled by Pär's increasing sway over his life, Eddie seeks out Dr. Richard Montgomery, a specialist in dissociative identities. The psychiatrist is Eddie's best chance for piecing together the puzzle of what really happened to Lucy and to understanding his inexplicable memories of another man's life. But Montgomery's methods trigger a kaleidoscope of memories that Pär can't contain, bringing Eddie closer to an unimaginable truth about his identity.
Send us a textIn this episode the cousins are discussing the dynamics of being biracial in our society. The current generation of parents are adapting to society adjustments and expectations with attempting to provide the best family life experience. The cousins are also discussing the different views of how government leadership is affecting day to day living for Americans. This is a time to continue to educate yourselves on the history of our country to understand where it's going.
In the United States, there are an estimated 1.6 million people who identify as transgender, which is about 0.6% of the population ages 13 and older. It's about the equivalent of the population of Phoenix, Arizona; it's just about how many people said on the US Census in 2021 that they are Japanese. Of course this population matters – AND, it's not a large percentage of our American population. Yet the inordinate number of laws that have already been passed or changed since #47 was re-inaugurated, ones that harm the transgender community and the individuals and families in it, is astounding. In other words, although this group doesn't comprise a large percentage of our American population, it is being disproportionately targeted by this administration. The cruelty is the point, sure. But what can we do about it? How can we be an ally? Let's start with organizations to support. If you have the ability to donate or volunteer, here are a few that we like: the Transgender Law Center, Advocates for Trans Equality, The Trevor Project, The Trans Lifeline, and GLAAD. Also, you'll want to make sure to check what organizations are available locally as well, as it will be your local communities where you can have the most impact. Next, listen to this episode - or re-listen, if you heard it come out before. Buy Schuyler's book. Tell all your friends. We have to talk about what it means to be transgender, and how the transgender lived experience differs from ours, if we want to truly be allies and not just performatively say we are. This is where we say, and mean it: all of us, or none of us. We hope you listen, and take action. What to listen for: Intersectionality, and Schuyler's own experience growing up biracial The importance of exploring why you are who you are, for ALL of us, when it comes to gender The quick take-down of the arguments from people working to push trans women out of women's sports A bullet pointed list of what NOT to say to transgender folks [TIMESTAMP PLEASE] How to remind yourself of joy and a sense of thriving in the world, when it gets rough What Schuyler wants cisgender, heterosexual women to do differently, once you listen to the episode About Schuyler: Schuyler Bailar (he/him) is an educator, advocate, and bestselling author who made history as the first transgender athlete to compete in any sport on an NCAA Division 1 men's team. Originally recruited to swim for the Harvard women's team, Schuyler made the difficult choice to transition while potentially giving up the prospect of being a women's NCAA Champion. His story has appeared everywhere from 60 Minutes to The Washington Post and the Ellen Show. Schuyler's tireless advocacy has earned him numerous honors, including Forbes 30 Under 30 and the Out 100. In 2023, Schuyler's critically acclaimed nonfiction bestseller became the preeminent resource on trans inclusion, He/She/They: How We Talk About Gender and Why It Matters. Schuyler's works include his middle-grade novel Obie Is Man Enough, his online gender literacy training LaneChanger.com, and his hit podcast Dear Schuyler, including exclusive interviews with trans icons and allies like Lia Thomos, Dylan Mulvaney, Rafael de la Fuente, and many more. A pond-side podcast about biracial belonging in the arts, recorded live. Maria Birch-Morunga is a Māori/Pakehā facilitator and craft queen. Kate Robinson is an Iranian/Australian family violence lawyer and artist. Together, they're two biracial women who are endlessly fascinated by the juggling of cultures, identities, and family gossip that can come with being mixed-race. Their podcast Being Biracial is filled with heartfelt and funny interviews with guests discussing the dualities of living across multiple cultures. And now they're bringing the pod to MPavilion for a special live recording. Joining them for a chat is MPavilion Season 11 collaborator Joel Bray, a proud Wiradjuri dancer and performance-maker, and Scotty So, a Melbourne/Narrm-based artist who works across media, including ceramic, painting, photography, sculptures, site-responsive installation, videos, and performance. As the Artistic Director of Joel Bray Dance, Joel Bray makes his work in collaboration with Elders, Community and Country, often in unorthodox spaces that draw on his Wiradjuri heritage. Using humour, Joel engages audiences in rituals that touch on themes of sex, history, trauma, and healing. Driven by the thrill of camp, Scotty So explores the often-contradictory relationship between humour and sincerity, creating a scene of para-fiction through the manipulation of found objects and existing imageries in the living experience. Born and raised in Hong Kong, So's work has been shown in Australia, China, Hong Kong, and Europe, including the National Gallery of Victoria. Scotty So is represented by MARS Gallery in Australia. This is a celebration of shared stories and a peek behind the concrete walls into the work that makes up the Home Ground program.

In 1963, Shawn was placed for adoption because his white mother's family didn't want a biracial grandson. As an infant, he passed for white, so he was adopted by a racist, rural Indiana family who didn't realize that he was Black. Ashamed of his ethnicity, his mom concocted lies to hide his race from everyone, including Shawn. This lack of racial identity caused depressing confusion and conflict with his education, relationships, and career, but his mom insisted that he was not to search for his birth family until after she died. Around age 40, Shawn and his wife decided that they were well-suited to adopt other biracial babies. Through the adoption process, Shawn discovered clues that helped him locate and reunite with his biological family. Although Shawn's author name for his book "Born Without A Race" is Dr Michael Bauer, he wishes to be addressed as Shawn during this interview for personal reasons. In fiction and nonfiction, the author Danzy Senna focusses on the experience of being biracial in a nation long obsessed with color lines. Now that Kamala Harris is the Democratic candidate for President, some of Senna's concerns have come to the fore in political life. Donald Trump attacked Harris as a kind of race manipulator, implying that she had been Indian American before becoming Black for strategic purposes. The claim was bizarre and false, but Senna feels that it reflected a mind-set in white America. “Mixed-race people are sort of up for debate and speculation, and there's a real return to the idea that your appearance is what matters, not what your background is or your identity,” she tells Julian Lucas, who wrote about Senna's work in The New Yorker. “And if your appearance is unclear to us, then we're going to debate you and we're going to discount you and we're going to accuse you of being an impostor.” Senna talks about why she describes people like herself and Lucas using the old word “mulatto,” despite its racist etymology. “The word ‘biracial' or ‘multiracial' to me is completely meaningless,” she says, “because I don't know which races were mixing. And those things matter when we're talking about identity.” Senna's newest novel, “Colored Television,” follows a literary writer somewhat like herself, trying to find a new career in the more lucrative world of TV.
In this enlightening episode, Elena speaks with Andrea Horton-Mericli, a dedicated diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consultant. They delve into the critical importance of creating inclusive environments, the complexities of navigating biracial identities, and the transformative power of storytelling. Check out Elena's website to learn more about how she can support you in seeing and using the power that resides within you. Andrea shares her personal journey as a biracial woman, the daughter of a Latina mother from Veracruz and a white Anglo father, and how her upbringing in diverse environments shaped her passion for DEI work. Both Andrea and Elena recount their experiences growing up in border towns, grappling with their identities while finding their place in a world that often requires strict categorization. They discuss how these biracial identities can serve as a superpower in bridging gaps between cultures and perspectives, highlighting the need for more spaces that celebrate this multifaceted heritage. The conversation also touches on Andrea's initiative, the "Diversifuse" podcast, which aims to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and advocate for resources to support them. As Andrea highlights contemporary issues such as neurodiversity, mental health, and the emotional needs of individuals in the current political climate, she emphasizes the significance of relatability and storytelling in fostering understanding. The episode culminates with a powerful vision for the future, as both hosts encourage listeners to consider the impact of their actions on future generations and the importance of role modeling behavior that promotes kindness, empathy, and inclusivity. This episode offers an inspiring exploration of identity, leadership, and the profound potential of storytelling to effect change. Whether you're a leader seeking to enhance your inclusive practices or an individual navigating your own experiences of belonging, this conversation promises to resonate and encourage reflection on the ways we all contribute to a more equitable world. Grappling with My Biracial Identity. In this two-part episode of “At the Podium,” I sit down with LeRoy McClain. An award-winning actor who has distinguished himself On and Off Broadway, and in television shows such as And Just Like That (in the role of Andre Rashad Wallace) and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (in the role of Shy Baldwin) and the feature film Respect (in the role of Cecil Franklin). In Part II Grappling with My Biracial Identity we examine LeRoy's origin story and the man beneath the success. LeRoy and I look back at his time at our shared alma mater Yale Drama School which he refers to as one of the roughest, yet most important times of his life. We learn how he had to navigate the complexities of growing up a biracial child in England and Hawaii. And how the murder of George Floyd brought into LeRoy's family life the contentious dialogue about race, responsibility and representation that was being fought for out on the streets of America in 2020. These questions of race and racial identity were inevitable, because, As LeRoy says, growing up he didn't get to choose despite having a white, English mother because “As society views me… I am a black man.”In the midst of it all, LeRoy is still able to acknowledge how lucky and blessed his life has been. He graciously gives flowers to the people in his life and career who not only believed in him along the way but gave him the opportunities to be who is and to work (gifts from God to any actor or artist). For more information contact Patrick at patrick@patrickhueyleadership.com
