Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Tim Bowens made an immediate impact with the Miami Dolphins, who selected the massive defensive tackle in the first round of the 1994 draft despite the Okolona, Mississippi native having played just nine games of NCAA football. Bowens would be named NFL Rookie of the Year that season and would go on to anchor the Dolphins defensive front from 1994-2004 with a mythlike strength and toughness that is still marveled at to this day. In a rare interview for the Pro Bowl defender, “Timbo” reflects upon life in Okolona (2:40), details his journey from Itawamba Community College to Ole Miss (5:05), and recalls a hometown, pre-draft visit he received from Pro Football Hall of Famer and then-Miami Dolphins defensive line coach, “Mean” Joe Greene (9:05). Tim also reveals the hilarious details of his first-ever conversation with Don Shula after the coaching icon selected him in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft and explains why hazing attempts by veteran players got really ugly, really fast (11:20). The big man in the middle also discusses the mindset necessary to play defensive tackle in the NFL (19:05), opens up about the transition from Coach Shula to Jimmy Johnson (27:08), reveals his role in Jack Del Rio's short-lived Dolphins tenure (29:13), and provides more insight as to what made Zach Thomas a special player (34:50). Finally, Timbo dominates The Fish Tank Two-Minute Drill like only he can (46:45). Contributors to this episode include Sean “DJ Prec” Todd, Alex Bitchatchi, and Dolphins Productions. On this week's show, your host, Justin Mog, sits down with Connor Giffin, the new Courier-Journal Environmental reporter and Report for America corps member. We discuss some of his first impressions of Louisville and his recent coverage of pollution in Beargrass Creek, MSD and the city's efforts to reduce sewage overflow. We also discuss some of the under-reported sustainability stories in Louisville such as: 1. Transportation and how Louisville is very lazy about that - intellectually and physically; 2. How racism is fueling climate change by allowing white leaders to ignore real transportation planning that serves those without cars and dense urban development and affordable housing; 3. The Land Development Code Reform Process and access to vacant land - which is disconnected from the Sustain Louisville plan; 4. Basic natural history and environmental education - what are the local species, urban wildlife, migratory species that pass through here? Threats to them and reasons to protect and value them, including invasives, and the new invasive species recently identified in Louisville by citizen scientists; 5. Indigenous peoples of our region (again, ignored due to racism) - who was displaced from these lands? what could we learn from them about sustainability? What are their ongoing struggles and successes? ; and 6. Reparations for indigenous and black communities who have suffered from environmental injustice. • Check out Connor's staff profile https://www.courier-journal.com/staff/7467685001/connor-giffin/ • Report for America https://www.reportforamerica.org/ • Mississippi River Basin Ag and Water Desk https://agwaterdesk.org/ • Courier-Journal Mobile Newsroom information https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/2022/06/15/courier-journal-mobile-newsroom-coming-your-neighborhood/7585572001/ The Courier-Journal is partnering with libraries to bring a newsroom to more neighborhoods. "His eyes, usually mild in their expression, were blazing with the intense glare of a panther’s springing upon its prey....So fierce did his passion become that he was almost equally dangerous to friend or foe.." --Major David Kelly, C.S.A. Part 3 recounts two confrontations with fellow Confederates. First, the killing of Lt. Andrew Gould by his commanding officer, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Though probably self-defense, the incident underscores the centrality of violence in the life of the famed cavalry general. Chickamauga follows, and then Forrest lets Braxton Bragg know how he really feels about him. The episode concludes with the infamous 'Massacre at Ft. Pillow.' In between, we take a look at Okolona, one of Forrest's most impressive victories. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The commercial developments around Outer Loop may not seem much like nature sanctuaries, but Kentuckiana Sounds curator Aaron Rosenblum found one hidden water management feature full of busy nocturnal creatures. This recording was made in 2018 as part of the COLLIDER Artist in Residence program at the South Central Regional Library. To hear the full recording, explore the sound map, or submit a sound visit www.wfpl.org/sounds or www.kentuckianasounds.org.
Lane Bridges is a 10-year-old that should become an alarm clock with his epic inspirational speech to his youth football team! Then Abi from Okolona took on Kelly in Can't Beat Kelly, there were poop flags, when NOT to get a massage and many more life lessons from idiots. Happy Monday!
Kentuckiana Sounds curator Aaron Rosenblum stops to listen to the chorus of insects by a grassy lot in Okolona. Last night, Louisville Metro Council approved a zoning change that will pave the way for Unity Place--an affordable housing complex in the Okolona neighborhood that would also include some housing for refugees. Since the project was introduced, nearby property owners have been very vocal about their concerns. The zoning change process is itself complicated for council members, who have to balance following the rules with what their constituents are asking for. WFPL's Amina Elahi joins us today on Recut to explain how the process works.
Dr. Wayne Creighton prides himself in helping those trapped in addiction regain hope and reclaim their lives. As founder, president, and CEO of Interlink Counseling Services, Creighton has helped countless men and women veterans reclaim their lives from addiction, homelessness, and hopelessness. He began his journey working in alcohol and drug education for court referral services, for those convicted of DUI violations. Creighton took that experience to Volunteers of America and served as a case manager, then as a program manager. He also helped design a residential recovery program. In 1993, Creighton formed Interlink Recovery Services, a non-profit group located in the Okolona neighborhood of Louisville. Interlink offers a holistic approach of substance abuse treatment and encourages residents to work on all aspects of healing themselves. They advocate for the homeless, offer structured DUI services, and help individuals and families with counseling in a nurturing environment. Interlink also accommodates the unique needs of veterans, helping them to rehabilitate and change their lives.

AMANDA SHIRES is a singing fiddle-playing Texan who just released her second solo CD called "Carrying Lightning." She deftly employs her fiddle/violin, ukulele and even whistling ... the resulting sound is a beautiful but woozily surrealistic swoon. Amanda was also recently seen in the recent Hollywood movie Country Strong where she played the fiddle player in the band backing Gwyneth Paltrow's fictional country superstar. WoodSongs alum Rod Picott will join Amanda on acoustic guitar. BEN HALL is a 22-year old multi talented National Thumbpicking Champion from Okolona, Mississippi. Ben has also been recognized nationally as a singer/songwriter who prefers traditional styles of music. While attending Belmont University, Hall has managed to perform at some of Nashville's most famous venues including the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Although he makes frequent appearances as a soloist, Hall has worked the stage as a sideman for legends such as Jeannie Seely, Jan Howard and Charlie Louvin. Ben has recorded with Louvin, Kurt Wagner & Cortney Tidwell, and Candi Staton. In 2011 Tompkins Square will release a new Ben Hall album full of guitar tunes heavily influenced by his heroes Merle Travis and Chet Atkins.
