After pushing the Confederate Army off the field at Shiloh, Ulysses S. Grant ordered Brig. Gen. William T. Sherman to move southwest towards Corinth to learn more about the condition of the Rebel Army. He quickly runs into Nathan Bedford Forrest, whose men are protecting a Confederate field hospital. The "official" end of the Battle of Shiloh ensued. In 2012, the members of the American Battlefield Trust preserved 250 acres of the Fallen Timbers battlefield. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/battlefields/support

The Ku Klux Klan rose from the ashes of the Civil War. At its peak in the early 1870s, the Klan had tens of thousands of members, many of them landowners, lawmen, doctors, journalists, and churchmen, as well as future governors and congressmen. The Klan's mission was to obliterate the democratic power of newly emancipated Black Americans and their white allies, often by the most horrific means imaginable. To repel the tidal wave of violence, President Ulysses S. Grant waged a two-term battle against both armed Southern enemies of Reconstruction and Northern politicians seduced by visions of postwar reconciliation. In his new book Klan War: Ulysses S. Grant and the Battle to Save Reconstruction, historian Fergus Bordewich transports us to the hamlets of the former Confederate States and to the marble corridors of Congress, where an unsung generation of Black leaders tried to hold onto Reconstruction-era political gains, and where senators such as Carl Schurz from Missouri, and the ruthless former slave trader and Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest, worked to eliminate the rights of Black Americans in the name of political “reform.” Join us for a special online-only program as Bordewich shares the  stunning history of the first national anti-terrorist campaign waged on American soil, as Ulysses S. Grant wielded the power of the federal government to dismantle the KKK. It is also a bracing reminder of the bloody, Reconstruction-era roots of current battles to protect the ballot box and to undercut resurgent white supremacist ideologies. SERIES 2 EPISODE 78: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The democracy will certainly not survive Donald Trump but I am now wondering if it has any chance of surviving Sarah Wallace, Patricia Millett, Cornelia Pillard, and Brad Garcia and if you don't know who they are, they are the latest people on the latest list of supposed liberals and supposed officers of the court who could get us all KILLED. Millett seems to be the most clueless of the three DC Appeals Court dilettantes who first STAYED the gag order issued against Trump in the Election Subversion case and then yesterday conducted the in-person hearing and all but announced that they WILL significantly limit the order because apparently when Trump starts ignoring laws he doesn't like and jailing judges he doesn't like, these idiots somehow think they will be immune because they were so fair to him back there in November 2023. Judge Millett seemed to base her nitwitted reaction to the two hours of oral arguments on the impact of the gag order on…presidential debates. “He has to speak ‘Miss Manners' while everyone else is throwing targets at him? It would be really hard in a debate, when everyone else is going at you full bore. Your attorneys would have to have scripted little things you can say.” Miss Manners. Trump has to speak ‘Miss Manners.' Do you get the same feeling I do that Judge Millette has no earthly clue WHO Dementia J. Trump is? Do you get the OTHER same feeling that I do that it has not occurred to, and will NEVER occur to, Judge Millette that so far there have been THREE presidential debates in the Republican primary and Trump hasn't shown up to any of them and there is no reason to expect he'd have the guts to show up to one in the general election. And THEN there is Judge Sarah Wallace and I'm not sure she didn't even harm the country MORE than Judge “Miss Manners” and Judge “I Would Assume” did. Judge Wallace heard the 14th Amendment disqualification case and at the same time that she ruled quote “that Trump incited an insurrection on January 6, 2021, and therefore ‘engaged' in insurrection within the meaning of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment” she then superseded the Amendment itself in as remarkable an act of judicial cowardice as I've ever seen. “After considering the arguments on both sides,” wrote Judge Wallace, “the Court is persuaded that ‘officers of the United States' did not include the PRESIDENT of the United States. It appears to the Court that for whatever reason the drafters of Section 3 did not intend to include a person who had only taken the Presidential Oath,” unquote. So she ordered him onto the Colorado primary ballot instead of saying “Yeah, I'm thinking they meant to include PRESIDENTS because otherwise having just survived the Civil War they decided to make sure Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest could NOT run for anything EXCEPT President of the United States rather than showing some guts, Judge Wallace folded. The people who could DO something and they actually divide into two categories and two categories ONLY: Judges who are too effete to do anything and judges who are too scared to do anything. B-Block (22:20) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: How did Argentina elect as its new president Jason Bateman playing Wolverine? The late great Joss Ackland. And the newest housing requisite: Built-in Dog Showers? (26:15) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Just a Fox News typo, no doubt: "Osama Biden Laden"; Moms For Liberty's Philly chief is a registered sex offender; Senator Mike Lee launches the worst January 6th gaslighting ever. C-Block (32:20) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Milo in Tennessee (33:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I anchored the telecast of the 1992 Baseball Expansion draft, 31 years ago this week. The Ku Klux Klan was arguably America's first organized terrorist movement. It was a paramilitary unit that arose in the South during the early years of Reconstruction. At its peak in the early 1870s, the Klan boasted many tens of thousands of members, no small number of them landowners, lawmen, doctors, journalists, and churchmen, as well as future governors and congressmen. And their mission was to obliterate the small but growing economic and political power of newly emancipated black Americans and their white allies, often by the most horrifying means imaginable. To repel the virulent tidal wave of violence, President Ulysses S. Grant waged a two-term battle against both armed southern enemies of Reconstruction and northerners seduced by visions of post-war conciliation, testing for the first time the limits of the federal government in determining the extent of states' rights. To discuss this early history of reconstruction is today's guest, Fergus M. Bordewich, author of “Klan War: Ulysses S. Grant and the Battle to Save Reconstruction.” We explore the hamlets of the former Confederate States and the marble corridors of Congress, analyzing key figures such as crusading Missouri Senator Carl Schurz and the ruthless former slave trader Nathan Bedford Forrest. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement

Gene Andrews is a retired high school history teacher who served as a combat officer with the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam. He's a former Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) Tennessee Division and current caretaker of the Nathan Bedford Forrest boyhood home in Chapel Hill, Tennessee. The rebel-proud gentleman talks about the September 18 reinterment of Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife Mary Ann Montgomery Forrest, an event being held at Elm Springs, SCV General Headquarters in Columbia, Tennessee. Andrews also myth-busts some Forrest history, both antebellum and postbellum, and tells us a little bit about himself as a former educator and military man, as well as his longtime defense of the Southern cause, which is still the same cause of all right-thinking people today ... whether they know it or not. “I loved the old government in 1861. I loved the old Constitution yet. I think it is the best government in the world, if administered as it was before the war. I do not hate it; I am opposing now only the radical revolutionists who are trying to destroy it. I believe that party to be composed, as I know it is in Tennessee, of the worst men on Gods earth – men who would not hesitate at no crime, and who have only one object in view: to enrich themselves.” — Nathan Bedford Forrest A few related links: SCV.org to register for the Forrest reinterment (deadline August 31) “Bust Hell Wide Open: The Life of Nathan Bedford Forrest” by Samuel W. Mitcham, Jr. A fairly balanced Tennessean article on Andrews published just days after the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, which Andrews attended My critique of the US military and its mistreatment of Southerners, “You don't want us? We don't want you!” and my interview with The Political Cesspool radio host and native Tennessean James Edwards in which he too discusses the brilliance of Forrest. In fact, it was Edwards who suggested Andrews as a possible guest for the DM podcast. So, thanks, James!

In Kentucky, a bill that would make insulting or taunting the police illegal, segueing into our ACAB of the week, followed by a Texas bill aimed at banning abortion and the Texas Attorney General suing Austin and Travis County over masks. Tennessee removes the Nathan Bedford Forrest bust from state capitol, but also wants to make the Holy Bible the state book while also advancing a bill that would amend Tennessee's state constitution to prevent the legalization of recreational marijuana (but with a twist).Links to the articles Kentucky advances bill to make it a crime to insult/taunt police Texas AG treatens to sue Austin over mask mandate Texas lawmaker introduces bill to allow death penalty for abortions Tennesse tries again to make Holy Bible state book Tennessee lawmaker introduces amendment to prevent legalization of marijuana (with a twist) Guest intro music by Adeem the Artist

Last week our home state voted to remove the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest from our state capitol building. Who was this dude, and why is the removal of this bust and other confederate statues a win? Episode 8 features James Edwards, host of the The Political Cesspool, a Tennessee-based syndicated talk-radio show that has been on air now for 16 years. Edwards is a free-speech advocate and does not shy away from hard conversations, which has gotten him in some hot water over the years. Like his hero Nathan Bedford Forrest, Edwards has been maligned and vexed with guilt-by-association and guilt-by-accusation attacks for discussing topics that many others aren't willing to touch. Heck, he knew all about the tyranny of the PC gestapo and cancel culture back when some of us were still liberals and neocons. But also like Forrest, Edwards keeps raising the black flag and moving forward. Mentioned in our conversation are my blog posts "White souls aren't worth much these days" and "White Christians should feel guilty," and Edwards' 2010 book "Racism, Shmacism: How Liberals Use the 'R' Word to Push the Obama Agenda.” Also mentioned is Pat Buchanan's influence in Edwards' political activism, so I've included two TPC interviews in which Buchanan and Edwards discuss the stalwart's prophetic books “Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?” and “Churchill, Hitler, and ‘The Unnecessary War': How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World.” And if you'd like to listen to my appearance on TPC from back in April, click here. Live radio is a whole different beast than is podcasting. My sons claim that during my interview I said that Levon Helm played Loretta Lynn's "mother" in “Coal Miner's Daughter,” and when I referred to the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, I called it the Siege of "Gettysburg." I vehemently denied both charges, but they're probably right. Oy. Hey, at least I'm raising kids who pay attention to detail. I really don't know how Edwards does it live every Saturday night. Additional reading on Nathan Bedford Forrest's faith include articles "Nathan Bedford Forrest and God's Amazing Grace" by Mike Scruggs and "When the Devil Got Saved: The Christian Conversion of Nathan Bedford Forrest" by Shane E. Kastler. For deeper biographical dives, check out the book "A Rebel Born: A Defense of Nathan Bedford Forrest" by Lochlainn Seabrook and the many articles on Forrest at the Abbeville Institute.

Season 3, Episode 52 The second day of battle brought fresh Union soldiers to the battlefield. They could hardly comprehend the destruction they witnessed from the day before. The bloodshed resumed until the overwhelmed Confederates were forced to retreat to Corinth. This episode also tells the oft-neglected story of the Battle of Fallen Timbers, in which William Tecumseh Sherman and Nathan Bedford Forrest met each other in battle. Chris Calton recounts the controversial history of the Civil War. You may support this podcast financially at Mises.org/SupportHC. In 1994, a story came along about a man of low intelligence who happens to hit a few lucky breaks, weaving himself in and out of the timeline of American history, and into the hearts of millions of movie-goers. That man is Forrest. Forrest Gump. For the month of February, I'll be focusing episode topics on historical and pop culture references in the movie. Ones you may have missed when watching the film because of the overwhelming emotion attached to every scene, or ones you may only be familiar with on the surface. In this episode, we're starting at the beginning of the movie, with the man Forrest Gump was named after. Some of the content may not be suitable for all listeners. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind Nathan Bedford Forrest. The role of General Sherman was played by Mark from the Unskippable podcast and the band And Robots. And Mat from The One Word, Go! Show played the role of Nathan Bedford Forrest.
