We talkd with Mark McAfee today from Organic Pastures here in California all about raw dairy products and the benefits they can have for your health. Raw dairy consists mainly of raw milk, raw cheese, raw butter, raw cream and raw kefir. We don't do a lot of dairy in our lives but we do like some raw butter and some cheese from time to time. It's very important that when getting raw milk that you know that the milk is clean and the cows are happy, grazing on grass, able to roam free in the pasture, they're not locked up in cages or standing in their own excrement which is many times the case in conventional dairy farms. It's also important that the milk isn't heated or treated by pasteurization or homogenization. Heat damage can cause protein molecules to be incredibly difficult to digest. Keeping the enzymes and bacteria alive is critical for being able to process and assimilate this raw food into your body. We dispelled many of the concerns and myths people have about drinking raw milk and taking dairy products in general. Some of the areas of concern people have that we covered are: Lactose intolerance The casein molecule IGF 1 growth factor and it's supposed "correlation" to cancer Hormones Parasites Bacteria Radiation from Fukushima How humans are the only mammals to not wean off their mother's milk And much more! Mark McAfee was a really great guest and a fireball of information. You can tell this man is passionate about his cows and the work he's doing at his ranch. He's doing some great things and we hope you like this show. Pass it on to your friends please!!! I hope you liked the show. The letter M: This weeks guest is Mark MacAfee, founder and owner of Raw Farm by Organic Pastures. We talk all things raw dairy, conventional vs organic dairy, the many health benefits of raw dairy products and the extensive challenges that farmers young and old face when up against the ever changing landscape of farming. Raw dairy has been a very confusing and demonized subject for the past several decades. Mark is the top producer of raw dairy in the world and provides much needed insight about the vigorous testing and safety associated with their production.
Milk and dairy products in general have been attacked by vegans for many years as one of the most health-destroying foods we can consume. The China Study is often cited as proof, and there are other references to the correlation between dairy products consumption and various diseases and conditions of physical degeneration. Few who cite or read such claims of damage done by dairy consumption seem to notice that the criticism of dairy products don't differentiate between raw and pasteurized milk. They also assume that cows and other dairy animals must be mistreated to produce milk for humans. Mark McAfee (www.organicpastures.com) is one of the best-qualified people to talk about these issues and correct the misconceptions. As the founder of Organic Pastures dairy, which has been around since 1999, Mark has been instrumental in keeping raw milk legal and available for Americans, educating people worldwide on its great health benefits, and setting an example for dairy producers in other countries on how to produce the best quality raw milk products for their customers. I personally have experienced the benefits of raw milk, and it was Organic Pastures milk that I used when in California, looking for a way to fill nutritional requirements I was unable to get as a 100% raw vegan. I got all my former muscle mass, body heat and energy back, plus other benefits, and have been using it now (currently from other sources, since I'm no longer in California) for almost 15 years. We're honored to have Mark on the show this Sunday, and hope you enjoy the insights of one of the best-qualified teachers of what raw milk can do on the planet today. Jenny is joined on the phone by Mark Mcafee of Organic Pastures to talk anything and everything Raw Milk. He introduces to us what exactly Raw Milk is and why it is better for you. If you have been thinking about giving Raw Milk a try and want to find out more about it, this is the show for you!
It's the first show of Meat Lovers May as Luis Quismorio makes a visit to the Appropriate Omnivore. Luis is President & CEO of the Figueroa Produce Market, the local natural food store in Aaron's neighborhood of Highland Park. Luis talks about how he's able to keep prices on organics affordable and why grassfed beef and raw milk are superior to their conventional counterparts. He also talks about upcoming ventures for more specifically tailored natural food stores in the Northeast Los Angeles area.
With 8 weeks to go until the Weston A. Price Foundation's 2012 Wise Traditions conference, The Appropriate Omnivore kicks off its series of Wise Traditions speakers. The first in the series is Mark McAfee, who runs Organic Pastures, one of the most sustainable farms around. Mark talks about how Organic Pastures operates to make sure that its raw milk is safe for consumers and its cows are treated in the most humane way. He explains why raw milk is healthier than pasteurized milk. Mark also mentions the other products that Organic Pastures offers and how everything they produce has been because of the customers' requests.
Today we have a real-life superhero on the show who is keeping the standards of Organically Certified Raw Milk to the highest they can be, and leading the way for other farmers to follow. That man is Mark Mcafee. I first come across Mark many years ago watching a documentary called Farmageddon (if you haven’t watched it then head on over to YouTube and give it a watch) and I have closely followed his work since. Mark is the owner of the Organic Pastures farm and brand. The name Organic Pastures is synonymous with quality and the Organic Pastures farm is the only originally certified producer of Raw Milk in the state of California. To quote the Organic Pasture’s website, “Organic Pastures’ raw dairy products are simply that- products made from milk that is unprocessed, whole, and living, with all of its probiotic bacteria. NEVER pasteurized (heated), homogenized (crushed), or otherwise altered. We produce delicious world-class dairy products for you to enjoy.” You will be able to hear the passion with which Mark speaks about the necessity of quality farming, high standards and producing world-class Raw Milk throughout the whole show. In the show we discussed: How he got into producing Raw Milk Why pasteurised milk is one of the most allergenic foods on the planet Mark’s farming techniques and how he treats his cattle The history behind why pasteurisation started Why the soil is so important for our future The different breeds of cow Mark uses How he keeps his Raw Milk free from nasty pathogens The truth about Organic Certifications How Raw Milk can eradicate allergies Why Raw Milk isn’t just baby calves formula & much much more It was such an easy interview as Mark possesses so much passion for his work. He will be someone we will get back on the show for sure. On last week's episode we ended up at Mountain Valley Farm - a dairy farm in the Creston Valley of B.C. operated by Wayne and Denise Harris and family. Mountain Valley Farm is a working example of an organic dairy farm that is quickly recognizing the economic potential of tapping into the growing public interest in organic and locally produced food. The farm is one of many models in Canada that is moving in a much different direction than most of the industrial food system. For the Harris family, this 'direction' is already proving itself to be socially and environmentally rewarding, and as they've gradually begun to recognize since the launch of their Kootenay Alpine Cheese business - economically rewarding too! On this episode we take a tour of the farm and their new cheesemaking facility, and we'll hear from Wayne Harris on the challenges and opportunities found from operating a small-scale organic dairy. Rounding off the show, a segment from a talk recorded in Burnbay, B.C. in October 2007 at an event hosted by Health Action Network Society (HANS). Speaker Mark McAfee is the founder of Organic Pastures Dairy Company (OPDC) - the first raw milk dairy with certified organic pasture in the State of California. Since the 1950s, McAfee Farms have been leading advocates of "nature-friendly farm practices". Organic Pastures is one of the few remaining family-owned and operated dairies in California. Guests Wayne and Denise Harris, Farmer, Mountain Valley Farm / Kootenay Alpine Cheese (Lister, BC) - Towering over Mountain Valley pastures is the magnificent Thomson Mountain range, and it's alpine meadows and forested slopes maintain a sentinel over this dairy farm. The farm is situated in the heart of the Kootenays, on benchland above the Creston Valley, 10 minutes from the Idaho border and 4 hours from the Alberta border. Mountain Valley uses no pesticides, GMO's or chemical fertilizer on the land. They nurture and replenish the soil through many sustainable management practices, including the application of composted manure from the farm and whey from their new cheesemaking facility. The health of the herd is maintained following organic practices, with no hormones being used. They are certified organic with Pacific Agricultural Certification Society and also belong to Kootenay Local Agricultural Society whose mandate is to foster local, sustainable agriculture. Voices Mark McAfee, Founder, Organic Pastures Dairy Company (Fresno, CA) - Founder of Organic Pastures Dairy, Mark is internationally recognized as an expert in raw milk production, and has spoken in over fifteen states and three countries on the subject. He invented the first dietary supplements made from fresh raw colostrum, and secured their certification from the FDA and DHS. Mark created and published the first international raw milk safety standards at www.rawusa.org.
