He began his practice in 1974 and retired in 2008. He holds certifications from the American Board of Pediatrics, The American Board of Allergy & Immunology, and the Canadian Board of Pediatrics. During his medical practice, John became interested in understanding the causes of and interconnections between hunger, satiation, and weight gain. His interest turned into a passion and a multi-decade personal study and research project that led him to read many medical journal articles, medical textbooks, and other scholarly works in biology, biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology, and cellular metabolic functions. This eventually guided Dr. Poothullil to investigate the theory of insulin resistance as it relates to diabetes. Recognizing that this theory was illogical, he spent several years rethinking the biology behind high blood sugar and developed the fatty acid burn theory as the real cause of diabetes. He then continued researching the linkage between diabetes and cancer and developed additional insights into the causes of childhood and adult cancer and possible treatments involving low-carbohydrate diets to initiate starving of cancer cells by removing their main source of energy — glucose from grains.  Dr. Poothullil has written articles on hunger and satiation, weight loss, diabetes, and the senses of taste and smell. His articles have been published in medical journals such as Physiology and Behavior, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, Journal of Women's Health, Journal of Applied Research, Nutrition, and Nutritional Neuroscience. His work has also been quoted in Woman's Day, Fitness, Red Book and Woman's World. His articles on diabetes have been published in Alternative Medicine, Whole Person, India Abroad, and several other magazines. Dr. Poothullil has published four books, two of which have won publishing awards in national book competitions. In fact, researchers from Berkeley identified how gratitude might actually work on our minds and bodies. And Robert Emmons, perhaps the world's leading scientific expert on gratitude, argues that gratitude has two key components – tune in to hear the key components and the science of gratitude.   What Is Gratitude? Robert Emmons, perhaps the world's leading scientific expert on gratitude, argues that gratitude has two key components, which he describes in a Greater Good essay, “Why Gratitude Is Good.”   “First,” he writes, “it's an affirmation of goodness. We affirm that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits we've received.”   In the second part of gratitude, he explains, “we recognize that the sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves. … We acknowledge that other people—or even higher powers, if you're of a spiritual mindset—gave us many gifts, big and small, to help us achieve the goodness in our lives.”   Emmons and other researchers see the social dimension as being especially important to gratitude. “I see it as a relationship-strengthening emotion,“ writes Emmons, “because it requires us to see how we've been supported and affirmed by other people.”   Because gratitude encourages us not only to appreciate gifts but to repay them (or pay them forward), the sociologist Georg Simmel called it “the moral memory of mankind.” This is how gratitude may have evolved: by strengthening bonds between members of the same species who mutually helped each other out.   This really is a ‘thing'! Brooks, author of Gross National Happiness, in a column in the New York Times. In the article, from 2015, he argues that “acting grateful can actually make you grateful” and uses science to prove it.   A 2003 study compared the well-being of participants who kept a weekly list of things they were grateful for to participants who kept a list of things that irritated them or neutral things. The researchers showed that the gratitude-focused participants exhibited increased well-being and they concluded that “a conscious focus on blessings may have emotional and interpersonal benefits.”   Understand this…..The participants didn't begin the study any more grateful or ungrateful than anyone else, and they didn't change their lives during the study so that they'd have more to be thankful for. They just turned their outlook to one of gratitude, and they were happier for it.   How Do You Practice Gratitude? We will all grapple with trauma in some form. If you haven't experienced it yet personally, then as a leader, mentor, friend, or loved one, you'll be with someone who has. Drawing from my own recent experience, I want to share what I've learned from an event that rattled my nervous system. We'll all get shaken by life, and whether it's a heated argument, natural disaster, or a dog attack (like mine), it's important to work through that experience so that unprocessed trauma doesn't get lodged in our system, only to make a surprise appearance when we least expect or want it. Not coping with trauma can have significant consequences. I'm sharing my own response to a recent experience. I'm not a trauma therapist or coach. I took on a few practices to move past a jarring event and as of now, they seem to be working. I do give coaching clients contemplative, grounding and journalizing practices like the ones I describe in this episode. I hope it helps you like it has for me. If you or someone you know have experience trauma, please reach out to a professional. Here are a few of my insights: Help often appears where you're not looking During the attack, I thought I was powerless and alone. I looked in one direction for help but it came from another. We all have our blind spots, assumptions and ways of seeing reality. We often need others to help us past our limitations. I was not alone. Trust in Others Who Care About You It takes time for the fight-or-flight chemicals to leave our bodies.  Until then we may function 'just fine'.  Yet our decision-making post trauma is compromised because our nervous system takes a while to settle.  Having someone in your corner that sees reality more clearly and who is willing be straight with you is priceless. And you have to be open to listening. Make time to recuperate and reflect Take the time you need to heal and process the event. It's likely you won't be on your game, so go light on work or take a complete break in order to give yourself the space to recover. While I didn't take days completely off, I went easy enough on myself to get my energy back and clear my head. As a young child, he was labeled ‘troubled' because he had a difficult time learning, focusing, and existing within the school system. Years later, as a teenager, he went through a series of events that led him to discover he had immune issues which contributed to his neurological setbacks. This discovery inspired Dr. Flynn to begin his journey defining his purpose and initiating his pursuit of education. He has attended numerous colleges and took countless courses from learning institutions including the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and Marinette, Scott College, Northwestern Health Sciences, National Health Sciences, Palmer College of Chiropractic, and Harvard Medical School— HMX Fundamentals Online Certificate Program- Immunology. His education contributes to his expertise in immunology and hormones. Within his 21 years of practice, he trained thousands of doctors on a different approach to healthcare and continues to do so today. There are currently 80 practicing clinics across the world. Dr. Flynn is also the author of an international bestselling book— I Disagree: How These Two Words Are the Secret to Thinking Differently and Taking Control of Your Health.
