In “Got (Raw) Milk? The Small Family Dairy Farms Behind a Big Controversy,” Gravy producer Bianca Garcia takes listeners to Milky Way Farm, the last dairy in Anderson County, South Carolina, where raw milk sales are keeping the Peeler family afloat. Their neighbors have succumbed to the pressures that have defined a generation of farmers. Between 2003 and 2022, South Carolina—where the state beverage is a glass of cold milk—lost 75 percent of licensed dairy operations. They have found their market in a niche constituency, though the wider public might disapprove. Raw milk is a risky product, often considered a public health risk. Raw milk is unpasteurized, meaning it hasn't been through a sanitizing kill step. Scientists worry that it can make consumers vulnerable to bacterial or viral infection, but raw milk lovers can't get enough of the creamy taste and allegedly healthful properties. This debate is situated in what seems to be a public health emergency. Reports of bird flu infecting dairy cattle leave public health officials worried that drinking raw milk can spread disease. Under the Trump presidency, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has vowed to increase public access to raw milk as a part of his Make America Healthy Again agenda. Raw influencers and “tradwives” promote it endlessly on social media. Through all this noise, it's easy to lose sense of the fact that this is an issue that starts on the farm. In this episode, you will hear from L.D. Peeler, acting patriarch of Milky Way Farm, his daughter, Iris, and son, Davis. Each plays a role on their small family farm, which raises 120 Jersey cows: Davis works on the farm, L.D. manages the finances, and Iris does the public relations. They each have different, but entangled, stories to tell. At Milky Way Farm, we are reminded that, just like any other food, raw milk starts with the land, the animals, and the people that make it possible. Guided by the community's desire for a tasty and safe product, the Peelers have shaped their business to meet this need. Thus, in the face of economic pressures of the dairy industry and cultural pressures around the product, they have risen above—like the cream beneath the lid of their bottled pints. Bird flu has been making headlines again, and if you’ve been wondering what’s really going on, you’re not alone. While the risk to the average person is still low, experts are keeping a close eye on the situation—especially as H5N1 spreads in mammals like cows, something we haven’t seen at this scale before. At the same time, public health communication from the federal government has shifted under the new administration, leaving some experts concerned about transparency and the availability of critical data. So, what does that mean for us? Should we be worried about our food supply? How do we separate fact from misinformation? And what simple steps can we take to stay informed and prepared? Today – I sit down with Jessica Malaty Rivera, an infectious disease epidemiologist and science communicator. Jessica has spent years making complex public health information easier to understand, and today, she’s here to help us make sense of what’s happening with bird flu, why testing matters, and how small actions—like getting a flu shot—can make a big difference.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of The Food Professor Podcast, we welcome Karen Proud, the inaugural President and Adjudicator of the newly established Office of the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct (OGSCC). With an extensive background in industry leadership, policy, and regulatory affairs—including past roles as President & CEO of Fertilizer Canada and COO at Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada—Karen brings deep expertise to this critical new role aimed at fostering fair business practices in the grocery industry.Karen shares insights into her priorities for the first 100 days, including setting up the office, educating industry stakeholders, and ensuring smooth implementation when the code officially takes effect in June. She also addresses industry skepticism about the voluntary nature of the code and how transparency, public reporting, and industry buy-in will drive accountability.Beyond the grocery code, Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois dive into pressing issues shaping the food retail landscape. They explore the evolving "buy Canadian" movement, questioning whether consumer support for domestic products is a trend or a fleeting response to geopolitical tensions. They also discuss the impact of tariffs, supply management in the dairy sector, and whether Canadians truly understand how grocery pricing and food policies work. The conversation extends to shrinkflation, the federal government's response to rising food costs, and how consumer perceptions influence buying behaviour. Are grocery chains and private-label brands benefiting from shifting consumer preferences? Is there a genuine commitment from major players to offer more Canadian-made products? In addition, raw milk and seed oils take center stage, with Sylvain weighing in on the debate over health benefits, government regulation, and consumer demand for alternative food choices. Meanwhile, the discussion around the GST holiday on food purchases highlights ongoing efforts to alleviate consumer financial pressure while maintaining a competitive retail environment.New York Times article on Raw Milkhttps://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/13/magazine/raw-milk-danger-benefits.html?unlocked_article_code=1.wk4.xI2Q.wjjcYaYrbFpb&smid=url-share The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. Thousands of years ago, after domesticating cows and other ruminants, humans did something remarkable: They began to consume the milk from these animals. But living closely with animals and drinking their milk also presents risks, chief among them the increased likelihood that infections will jump from animals to people. Some of humanity's nastiest scourges, including smallpox and measles, probably originated in domesticated animals. In the 19th century, health authorities began pushing for milk to be treated by heating it; this simple practice of pasteurizing milk would come to be considered one of the great public-health triumphs of the modern era.Today, however, a small but growing number of Americans prefer to drink their milk raw. And Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Trump's choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, now stands at the vanguard of this movement. Can your wealth strategy survive a catastrophic loss, or is it just a house built on sand? In this thought-provoking episode, Hans and Brian explore the critical difference between true insurance protection and the misconception of self-insurance. They use recent events in California as a springboard to examine broader principles of wealth protection and risk management that affect everyone. Through real-world examples and careful analysis, they challenge popular financial advice about "buying term and investing the difference," revealing why this strategy might leave families vulnerable just when they need protection most. The conversation delves into how insurance companies evaluate and price risk, offering insights into why higher premiums often signal a greater need for coverage. This episode goes beyond theoretical discussions, providing practical wisdom about building financial strategies that can withstand unexpected events. Whether you're just starting to build wealth or already have substantial assets, understanding the relationship between protection and growth could be the difference between lasting prosperity and financial vulnerability. California's Policy Failures: An analysis of how state regulations, including premium caps and environmental policies, led to major insurance companies pulling coverage from high-risk areas. With average home values of $3 million in affected areas, the devastating financial impact on homeowners who lost coverage becomes even more significant. The Reality of Self-Insurance: Through the LA fires example, a clear demonstration of why "self-insurance" is merely asset reallocation rather than true protection. A theoretical case study of a couple with an $8 million net worth split between their home and investments shows how one catastrophic event can cut wealth in half without proper insurance coverage. Understanding Risk and Premiums: An exploration of how insurance companies price risk, whether for property or life insurance, and why higher premiums for higher-risk situations signal a greater need for coverage rather than a reason to avoid it. The Protection-First Strategy: A detailed examination of why protection must come before wealth accumulation, or else everything built could be wiped away by a single event. ▶️ Chapters: 00:00 - Introduction and California Contex 01:00 - Insurance Companies Pulling Coverage 02:00 - Current Events in PA and CA 03:00 - Raw Milk and Food Supply Issues 07:00 - Insurance Crisis Background 09:00 - Property Insurance Parallels to Life Insurance 15:00 - Risk Assessment and Premium Pricing 20:00 - The Myth of Self-Insurance 25:00 - Real-World Example of Net Worth Impact 30:00 - Protection First Philosophy 34:00 - Closing Thoughts Got Questions? AP correspondent Ed Donahue reports many of RFK Jr.'s views on health fall outside the mainstream.
In this episode, we dive deep into the world of dairy farming with JR Burdick, a former conventional dairy farmer turned raw milk producer. JR shares his journey from following the traditional dairy farming system to becoming an independent raw milk seller, breaking away from industry norms and regulations. He recounts the challenges he faced, including dealing with stray voltage that decimated his herd, a lengthy legal battle with an electric company, and the emotional and financial toll it took on his family.JR also discusses the impact of industry regulations, such as the mandatory check-off programs and the pressures from dairy cooperatives, which led him to question the sustainability and ethics of the conventional dairy system. His story is one of resilience and transformation as he navigates the complexities of direct-to-consumer sales, the challenges of marketing raw milk, and the importance of maintaining integrity in his farming practices.Throughout the conversation, JR offers insights into the broader agricultural landscape, touching on issues like government subsidies, the consolidation of the dairy industry, and the role of technology and innovation in farming. He also shares his thoughts on the future of agriculture, the potential of Bitcoin as a financial tool for farmers, and the importance of preserving traditional farming knowledge. This episode is a compelling exploration of the struggles and triumphs of a farmer who dared to defy the status quo and forge a new path in the world of agriculture.
Trump's priority to strengthen the U.S. military presence along the southern boarder and reviewing whether active-duty forces should be used for law enforcement which rarely is done. In a message to the force shortly after he was sworn in Saturday, Hegseth cited the challenges he sees ahead. Some are ones his predecessors also faced, such as reorienting the military from decades of a Mideast focus and better deterring China. Continued conflict in the region, including the October 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas, has made that shift impossible to execute. The Supreme Court arguments last week in a case that seeks to challenge a Texas state law requiring pornography websites to confirm a user's age before allowing them to view adult content, wither by uploading a photo of their government-issued ID or allowing their face to be scanned. For such a ubiquitous beverage, milk is surprisingly controversial. In recent years, the drink has defined by FDA as the “lacteal secretion” of cows has sparked heated disputes about its healthiness, its safety, and with the proliferation of milk alternatives, what it even is.

Being the Republican House leader is a little like marrying Henry VIII. At some point, you're getting your head cut off. But for now, Mike Johnson remains not just physically intact—but in a position of incredible power. Two weeks ago, Johnson was reelected Speaker of the House on the first ballot. Despite having only the narrowest of House majorities—the Republicans control the House by four votes, 219 vs. 215 Democrats—Mike Johnson was able to unite the Republican Party's warring factions—moderates, the Freedom Caucus, the Raw Milk caucus, libertarians, hawks, doves, and whatever Lauren Boebert is—behind him. It was tough to pull off, as it would've taken only a couple of No votes to send him off to that Republican Valhalla where John Boehner chain-smokes and chugs merlot, Paul Ryan does push-ups, and Kevin McCarthy throws darts at a photo of Matt Gaetz. Now, Donald Trump will become president of the United States and Mike Johnson will have the task of shepherding his agenda through Congress. And because the Republicans control the House by only four seats, the Speaker might have to get very close to some moderate Democrats—particularly those with constituents itching for a tax cut. Today on Honestly, Speaker Johnson breaks down this challenge. He talks about how the party moves forward with two different visions for America; why he thinks Biden was “the worst president ever”; he recalls an eerie experience with Biden in the Oval Office; and he even gives us a taste of his uncanny Trump impression. Pasteurization is the process that rids milk of bacteria. But more people are opting for unpasteurized milk, also known as raw milk. In May, sales of raw milk rose more than 20 percent compared to the year before. That's according to Nielson IQ, a market research firm. But consuming raw milk comes with significant risks. In late November, California regulators recalled some raw milk products after detecting bird flu virus. And last week, the USDA ordered testing across the nation's milk supply over bird flu concerns — an issue that began back in March. Although both the CDC and FDA caution against the consumption of raw milk, the product is being pushed by some right-wing conservatives. One of the most prominent proponents of raw milk is Robert F.
