In this episode of On the Road with Paul Ward, Paul visits the charming Cornell Wine Company and chats with local musician and event coordinator, Sierra Drummond. Sierra shares how she got her start organizing music nights at the venue, including open mic nights and featured artist events that spotlight both undiscovered local talent and internationally known musicians like Elliot Lurie, the songwriter of Brandy (You're a Fine Girl). With a rich musical heritage—her parents are both in the band Ambrosia—Sierra began performing at just four years old and has developed into a passionate performer and songwriter. She opens up about her own songs, “Look Out For Me” and “Slow Morning,” and the creative process behind her music. Sierra also reflects on her love of the stage, the evolution of her sound, and how music connects people, whether through live shows or her involvement in community outreach efforts like clothing drives following recent fires. The conversation dives deeper into Sierra's musical family, including her mom's background vocals for Jimmy Buffett and studio work with Pink Floyd, and her own experiences in the family's band, The Tin Drum Family Band. Sierra discusses her favorite genres, instruments, and how digital media compares to the energy of live music. She also touches on the resurgence of Yacht Rock and its influence on her father's career, upcoming events at Cornell Wine Company, and her role as a music teacher during the week. From her humble beginnings at Cornell to her multifaceted role as performer, teacher, and event planner, Sierra's story is one of passion, community, and the power of music. Paul Ward is the visionary behind The Nine Four, a groundbreaking running crew that has redefined the running culture in Cape Town. Paul's journey began with a bold mission: to break down the social and racial barriers that once divided communities. At a time when people of different skin colours were rarely seen running or socialising together, Paul founded The Nine Four—a crew that has grown into a powerful symbol of unity and inclusivity. With just 30 members, The Nine Four isn't just about running—it's about creating a space where diverse individuals come together to connect, share experiences, and celebrate their love for movement. In this conversation, we dive deep into Paul's personal journey, the evolution of The Nine Four, and the impact of creating a space that celebrates togetherness, inclusivity, and breaking barriers. This is an inspiring story of how running became a catalyst for change and connection in Cape Town, and how a small crew is helping reshape a community, one step at a time. In this episode of "On the Road with Paul Ward," Paul delves into the Ventura County Real Estate Market and its pricing trends over the past few years. He starts by presenting staggering statistics about the average cost of housing in Ventura County. Paul then discusses interest rates and compares the price per square foot of homes in Oxnard (Ventura County) versus Marina Del Rey (LA County). He offers insights into why people have been moving to Ventura County recently. Referencing an economic report from Cal Lutheran University and charts from an article in The VC Star, Paul provides data on GDP growth, the salary-to-rent ratio, and population growth. He also reveals where people are relocating when they leave Ventura County and shares his experiences about why many are moving to Ventura County from LA County. Lastly, Paul discusses the number of new homes built in Ventura County over the past year and how these factors are contributing to the persistently high housing prices in the area. In this episode of On the Road, we welcome Tyler Nash, Program Manager of The Wellness Center in Oxnard, California. Tyler introduces us to the center's mission of providing accessible mental health services to individuals in Ventura County, particularly those who might otherwise be underserved. He explains how people find their way to The Wellness Center, emphasizing that neither insurance nor money is required to receive support. The center refers to its clients as "Members," who have the autonomy to choose how they spend their time within the clubhouse environment. The staff, known as "Peer Support Specialists," play a crucial role in supporting Members, bringing the benefit of lived experience to their interactions. Tyler shares that while some individuals stay for a short time, others may engage with the center's services for years. Collaborations with other entities are key to helping Members reintegrate into society effectively. He delves into the origins and uniqueness of The Wellness Center concept and its connection to the peer movement at Turning Point. The center prides itself on being a judgment-free zone, which stands in contrast to the outside world. Additionally, Tyler highlights the center's mobile services, the dynamic interaction between Members and staff, and the rigorous training involved to become a Peer Support Specialist, including WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) classes. He discusses the uniqueness of The Wellness Center as a walk-in facility in Ventura County, sustained by funding from Ventura County Behavioral Health, ensuring all services remain free for Members. Through this engaging conversation, listeners gain a comprehensive understanding of the vital role The Wellness Center plays in the community.
