Ori Nir, vice-president of public affairs for the liberal Zionist peace group, Americans for Peace Now, talks about tensions within the U.S. Jewish community over Israel. An Israeli journalist for 24 years, Nir says the frenzy of legislation coming out of the new right-wing government in Israel reflects how the anti-democratic nature of the Israeli Occupation of Palestine is now seeping into Israel, with right-wing extremists seeking to permanently entrench the Occupation and make it impossible for future governments to end it. The assault on democracy and religious pluralism in Israeli is leading more U.S Jewish leaders to speak out against the government there.

West Bank settlements remain a significant roadblock to peace in Israel and Palestine—perhaps the largest. Exacerbating the issue is settler violence against Palestinians, which has been on the rise in recent months. To help us understand this pressing and complex issue, and the historical context surrounding it, we've brought Ori Nir onto the show. Ori is the VP for Public Affairs at Americans for Peace Now; his decades of experience covering the conflict—and the West Bank, specifically—make him a crucial voice. Arkady Mazin is an expert on the Russian-speaking public in Israel. He is currently working on a book that among other topics examines attitudes among Israeli Russian speaking Jews toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In this episode, Mazin talks about what he depicts as an anomaly or a paradox. The two predictors for holding dovish views on this issue in Israeli society are secularism and high level of education. Israeli Jews from the former Soviet Union are much more secular than the overall population, and, on the average much better educated. Yet their views on Israel’s conflict with the Palestinians are more hawkish than those of the average Israeli. Donate to APN Write to Ori Nir

Forty years later, Zogby talks about what has changed and what has not, and explains his somewhat surprising decision to take an old short book, dust it off, write a new introduction, and republish it as is.
