Box2Box, with Rob Gilbert, Michael Edgley and Willem van Denderen. Tony Popovic’s Socceroos remain undefeated through nine starts and while Friday’s first leg of the Soccer Ashes won’t live too long in the memory, there was plenty to be excited about. Simultaneously, the performance has been considered underwhelming. Daniel Garb returns to assess the result and what it means on the path to next year’s World Cup. Meanwhile, the conduct of Preston supporters at Saturday’s NPL preliminary-final has led to investigations by Victoria Police and Football Victoria, and again raises questions of the future of the game as re-integration of former-NSL sides into the mainstream seeks to continue. We try to make sense of the frustration. Also on the agenda: World Cup qualifying wrap from around the confederations, Western United into ‘hibernation’ and Sam Kerr edges closer to a return with Chelsea. As the Northern Super League enters Week 21 of its inaugural season, we caught up with the President of the new Canadian professional women's soccer fold, Christina Litz. Litz, who's spent time at the Canadian Football League head office, Woodbine Entertainment and True North Sports and Entertainment during his career in the sports industry, talked about her journey from law school at the University of Manitoba and legal work at Bell Media and Telus before moving into the intersecting worlds of digital business and sports. She answered the questions from host Steve McAllister about joining NSL founder and former Canadian national soccer team standout Diana Matheson, and the challenges and opportunities in getting the new league off the ground and the NSL's place in the long-awaited growth of professional women's sports in North America. That included a reference to the impact Caitlin Clark has had on the landscape just before Nike announced its new logo partnership with the WNBA superstar. The NSL and Litz, as has been the case with major professional sports leagues since the overturning of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in the U.S., and the passing of Bill C-218 in Canada, are trying to seize the opportunities around the new world of legal sports betting – especially of the online variety. Litz talked about the NSL's efforts to partner with data companies and sportsbooks with an eye on expanding engagement around the league, its six teams, and its players. Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps, Vancouver Rise, Vancouver FC, Pacific FC and more. To begin, they dive into the latest on the Whitecaps, who have had a strange month of July so far. At the surface, things look calm, as they've treaded water in terms of results, but it's otherwise been a crazy month off the pitch with the sale of Pedro Vite to Pumas UNAM, the arrival of Peruvian youngster Kenji Cabrera, and the long-term knee injury suffered by key defender Ranko Veselinovic. As a result, Alex and Sam look into the aftermath of all of those bits of news for the Whitecaps, which have had a significant impact on those 'Caps for very different reasons. In particular, things are pointing towards the Whitecaps having a busy transfer window, as they look to maximize their contention window and keep it open as long as possible. Afterwards, they take a look at the latest out of the Vancouver Rise, who are catching form in NSL play at just the right time, showing signs of a newfound tactical identity on both sides of the ball. Lastly, they chat about the big movement coming out of the CPL teams in BC, as Vancouver FC have made the big decision to part ways with Afshin Ghotbi and replaced him with Martin Nash on an interim basis, while Pacific have brought home former striker Alejandro Díaz in a big coup for a team struggling to score. Make sure to check out The Third Sub Podcast on Twitter, @thirdsubpod, as well as on Instagram, @the3rdsub_.

In 2020, China implemented the National Security Law (NSL) in Hong Kong, making a wide range of political activities illegal and further reducing the city's autonomy. Last November, a court sentenced 45 pro-democracy figures to four to ten years in prison in the largest trial since the NSL was adopted. Political and legal changes have continued in Hong Kong, reshaping the Legislative Council and the way cases deemed a matter of “national security” are decided. What does the current situation in Hong Kong mean for the future of civil liberties and human rights in the city? What are the broader implications for Hong Kong's future as a global financial center and intellectual hub? How do events in Hong Kong affect U.S.-China relations? In an interview recorded on February 28, 2025, Carole Petersen and Ho-Fung Hung, in conversation with Thomas Kellogg, discuss the ongoing changes in Hong Kong.
