Today I interviewed Charles Hecker about Zero Sum. The Arc of International Business in Russia (Oxford UP, 2025). Hecker, a journalist and business consultant, speaks with dozens of Western business executives, bankers, and financiers who reaped immense profits for themselves and their companies in the Russian market, which suddenly opened to foreigners after decades of state planning and economic autarky. These “riskophile” Westerners recall the early post-Soviet Russia as an unchartered territory where business “had a body count” and “violence was cheap, routine and almost casual”. In the 2000s Russia, now stabilized by Putin, offered unparalleled opportunities for those who had learnt to navigate its murky, gray environment. While some expressed concern over the unchallenged primacy of the supreme ruler presiding over arbitrary redistribution of property in favor of his cronies and the rapid consolidation of state ownership, the squeamish were far outnumbered by the opportunistic. Following Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the subsequent imposition of sweeping Western sanctions forced most Westerners to flee, often selling their companies for a fraction of their value and, in some cases, even giving it for free to their Russian partners. Looking back some regret “looking the other way” at the rampant corruption and lawlessness, while others admit that enrichment in Russia was always destined to be short-lived. All flourishing is mutual, that's a given. And yet the schisms in our culture, the tribal divides and limbic hijack seem to grow deeper and more powerful by the day. It doesn't have to be like this. We do have the tools of connection, of genuine listening, of offering trust to gain trust and offering respect to gain respect, we just need to know how - and when - to put them into practice. If we're going to move forward into that future we'd be proud to leave behind, we need to start practicing these skills as if the world depended on them - because it does. This week's guest is someone who practices and teaches the deep, transformative skills of conflict resolution daily. Carm Aufderheide has a master's degree in conflict and dispute resolution (CRES), and qualifications in positive reinforcement dog training from the Karen Pryor Professional Dog Training Academy (KPA-CTP and CPDT-KA) and in Separation Anxiety from Malena DeMartini, bringing both to her consultations in her NorthStar Training Solutions in Oregon. Together, these put her right in the middle of quite fierce conflicts that rage around the dog training world over the various styles of dog training, most of which boil down to: do we use force or don't we? This is a perfect microcosm of the greater macrocosm of our torn and wounded world and Carm brings her dual skills to this with grace and intelligence and a fierce compassion that is a joy to encounter. I first came across Carm on the Functional Dog Collaborative podcast and was blown away by the clarity of her thinking, and her capacity to live true to her convictions. I made contact later that day and we set up time for the podcast. That was roughly six months ago, when the world was a different place. Now, recording on the day of the Pope's death, as our reality spirals deeper into chaos, it feels ever more essential that we learn these skills. Carm suggested a whole set of reading before we recorded and I have put a link to all the books, as well as Carm's NorthStar website in the show notes. #RUSSIA: ZERO SUM WARFIGHTING. REBEKAH KOFLER, AUTHOR, "PUTIN'S PLAYBOOK." 1917 VILNIUS
The last week has seen the dramatic beginning of a new historical era based on a US and Russia alliance. Donald Trump has thrown in with Vladimir Putin and thrown Ukraine and 80 years of the Transatlantic Alliance under a bus. In this FRDH podcast Michael Goldfarb speaks with Charles Hecker, who has lived an worked in Moscow for the last thirty years. His new book Zero Sum looks at the lessons learned -- and not learned by Western businessmen since the collapse of the Soviet Union. They also talk about what ithis new era might mean for the future of global democracy with the US clearly taking giant steps towards embracing the autocratic ruler of Russia.

President Zelensky's suggestion that military attempts to retake the occupied territories could be abandoned in return for rapid NATO membership for Ukraine does mark a change in tack. What is driving this political-diplomatic adaptation? And, in the second half, I draw on four books that speak in different ways to how Russia has managed (and sometimes failed) to adapt to the military and economic struggle, to bring them to this position. The books are:Christopher Lawrence, The Battle for Kyiv (Frontline, 2023)Mick Ryan, The War for Ukraine. Bradley considers the rise and fall and rise again of President Trump as a Biblical allegory. He -- meaning God, not Bradley — wants to show us where a Zero Sum view of life (and politics) leads. But will we heed His message this time? Plus, Bradley applauds New York's City of Yes housing plan and floats an idea for a national housing program modeled on Obama's Race to the Top education initiative. If it was sold the right way, Trump might just like it. Especially if God gives it a nudge.

Today, we talk about the arc of international business in Russia over the past 30-some years. Our guest is Charles Hecker. Charles is a self-professed “Russia geek” who has written a fabulous new book entitled Zero Sum - The Arc of International Business in Russia. It largely covers the time starting from the fall of the Soviet Union to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It's utterly fascinating on so many levels. International business in Russia, as you will hear, is almost like a huge natural experiment in decision-making. You will hear about complex to nuanced decisions, bad decisions, good decisions, and downright batshit crazy decisions. To fully understand and appreciate a topic as complex as Russia, you need to live and breathe it, and Charles has and does. He studied in Russia during the Cold War. He was a journalist there with Moscow Times in the 1990s and also led Control Risks Russia office in the country. Control Risks is a specialist risk consultancy where Charles and I were colleagues. Charles is also a great storyteller. That will come through in this conversation and it also comes through in the book which is filled with colour. In reading it, one can almost see, and smell vodka dripping from the page and imagine oneself in Russia in the nineties and the noughties. While it's impossible to go back in time and fully understand what people were thinking and feeling when they made decisions when it comes to business decision-making in Russia, Charles's account comes about as close as you can get. We've hit the BIG 5-0 and we're still speaking to each other. It's delight to welcome to Episode 50 of This is Not Happening (TINH). An Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast where in Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'. This is where we pick a theme and each select a song that represents that theme. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?This month, in Part 1, David introduces the latest album from one of my favourite obsession artists, 'My Method Actor' by Nilifur Yanya. In Part 2, Spin It or Bin It, we return for our quarterly visit to the theme of 'New Music' ... anything released since August 1st.Part 1 | Nilifur Yanya | My Method ActorThis is the third full length studio album from Yanya. She is a super interesting artist blending soul, jazz, indie and a bunch of other sounds and influences in there. This album is something of a departure for her following her last 2 albums that perhaps embraced the indie side of her influences. This album is a super smart melding of all of her influences, definitely leaning more towards the soul and jazz side of her music. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 26, 2024 is: zero-sum ZEER-oh-SUM adjective Zero-sum describes something, such as a game, mentality, or situation, in which any gain corresponds directly with an equivalent loss. // Dividing up the budget is a zero-sum game. See the entry > Examples: “Domestic migration is zero-sum, meaning a loss of college graduates prized by local officials and tax collectors in Washington or San Francisco can be a gain for Kansas City or Orlando.” — Josh Katz, The New York Times, 15 May 2023 Did you know? Does game theory sound like fun? It can be—if you are a mathematician or economist who needs to analyze a competitive situation in which the outcome is determined by the choices of the players and chance. Game theory was introduced by mathematician John von Neumann and economist Oskar Morgenstern in their 1944 book The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. In game theory, a zero-sum game is one, such as chess or checkers, where each player has a clear purpose that is completely opposed to that of the opponent. In economics, a situation is zero-sum if the gains of one party are exactly balanced by the losses of another and no net gain or loss is created; however, such situations in real life are rare.
In this episode, we're diving into a topic that I know many of you have encountered but might not have a name for zero-sum thinking. This is the belief that if you take something for yourself, you're taking it away from someone else. And let me tell you, it's a sneaky little mindset that can really hold us back, especially when we're navigating the rocky waters of breast cancer recovery. In this episode, I break down what zero-sum thinking is and why it's such a common roadblock for breast cancer survivors. Many of us feel that asking for help or seeking support means depriving someone else of those same resources. It's a noble thought, but it's not true. Support, love, and care are not finite resources. There's more than enough to go around for everyone. The healthcare industry has been rocked by the pandemic and thrown headfirst into a new era of technological and therapeutic revolution. Yet, in the midst of all this change and uncertainty, healthcare leaders are expected not just to survive, but actually drive value for their organizations, patients, and communities. The problem is, “driving value” is not only complex, but it's also ambiguous. Leaders who talk about value across the industry may not even be talking about the same thing. So, how should the industry think about driving value and what does it take to get this right? In this episode, live from Advisory Board's 2024 Value Summit, host Abby Burns invites Stacey Richter, healthcare entrepreneur, co-president of Aventria Health Group, and host of the Relentless Health Value podcast, to break down what “value” in healthcare actually means, where organizations go wrong, and how we can work to improve value across the industry. In this segment , Nolan and Kelli discuss new information about Shopify's Mastery Program. Employees are assigned a mastery score, and if their score does not increase, they do not receive a raise. They cover the implications of this new approach, comparing it to previous systems used by other companies which also relied on ratings and algorithms to determine merit increases, and discuss the concept of creating a zero-sum game in the workplace. While not exactly new, internal competition is front and center in Shopify's transparent new approach.HR Heretics is a podcast from Turpentine.SPONSOR:Attio is the next generation of CRM. Lee Judge is a keynote speaker, a creative marketer, a DJ, and currently the CEO of Content Monsta, a digital media company based in Atlanta. Lee was my first mentor when I moved down to Atlanta in 2022 and we've stayed close ever since. So, it was only right that my first episode off the rip would be with my man right here. In this episode, we begin by learning how Lee grew up on a large production chicken and tobacco farming North Carolina, how that was his first foray in entrepreneurship, and later how he first got into radio and production at Eastern Carolina University. After moving to Atlanta to make his run at the music producing business, Lee realized that if he transitioned into marketing automation and marketing operations, he could build on what he had already been doing. And that's ultimately how Content Monsta was born – out of necessity. The COVID-19 pandemic suddenly made remote production a must-have, and Lee capitalized on it. Lee also shares his go-to song on the dance floor to get people moving when he DJs, and what it was like growing up as a Black man on a farm in North Carolina and witnessing systemic racism. One of the most poignant points of the interview comes when he opines on the saying “I don't see color” and why that is a harmful thing to say, even if you don't intend to do harm or realize it. Finally, Lee wraps up with some tips on public and keynote speaking, what makes a great storyteller, and finally, he shares his realest talk. Shoutout to Lee for taking the time to rap with me one time in the studio, and thanks for being my guy down here. It's hard to find good people but you're a real one, Lee. All love. Follow him on Instagram @aleejudge, check out his YouTube Channel, @aleejudge, if you need some help sharing your story digitally, hit up contentmonsta.com, and if you enjoy this episode, please drop a rating and a review wherever you listen to podcasts, and share it with two other people. The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
It's Thursday and we're talking about the impact of the Fed's interest rate decision on Dealers. We're also covering the dramatically changing used car market, as well as the end of the charging platform wars as we've known them. After the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates steady at 5.25-5.5%, auto dealerships face a mixed bag: relief from further hikes but challenges from existing high rates continue.Yesterday, the Federal Reserve decided not to adjust the benchmark interest rate, remaining at 5.25-5.5%. This was primarily due to a preference for a 2% inflation target while recent figures showed a 2.4% increase year over year in January.Currently, The average interest rate for new vehicle loans rose to 7.2%, with used vehicles at 11.9% in Q4 2023.According to Cox Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke, the anticipation of future rate cuts could deter consumers from making immediate purchases. A week ago, Smoke said, “"It sends a clear message that, 'You need to wait because rates are going to be lower later in the year, so it takes a lot of urgency out of thinking of buying right now."According to a recent dealer sentiment poll, Interest rates remain a top challenge for franchised dealers, with 70% indicating a negative impact on their business. The gap between new and used vehicle prices is widening, leading to a significant rise in sales of used and certified pre-owned vehicles, according to a new report from ZeroSum.The average list price for used vehicles is decreasing for the eighth consecutive month, from $30,000 in June to just over $26,000.The average new-car price is falling below $50,000 for the first time in over a year, but the decline in used-car prices is outpacing this, widening the price gap between new and used vehicles.Used vehicle inventory is dropping to 1.89 million units, still far above February 2023's 1.34 million, while the turn rate is jumping from 57% in January to 71% in February. The certified pre-owned segment is rebounding from a slow fourth quarter to reach 163,000 sales in February. Inventory is dropping below 200,000 units for the first time in five months, and the turn rate is soaring to 86%It looks like the charging platform wars are winding down for good as ChargePoint announces the integration of Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector cables into its EV charging infrastructure. This move, originating from the Campbell, California-based EV infrastructure giant, is a significant step towards unifying the charging experience for both Tesla and non-Tesla drivers. In an announcement, appropriately on X (formerly Twitter), the company revealed that NACS cables for its Express 250 DC fast charger are now ready for EV charging site owners to order, with the capability to retrofit these cables onto existing DC fast charger models due to ChargePoint stations' modular design.New ChargePoint models can ship with the NACS cable ready to goHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
