Karim Safieddine is a PhD student interested in understanding the ways in which social movements, for what they represent in terms of various aspects of intellectual and organizational leadership, challenge or reproduce prevailing power relations and ideological norms between late 20th and 21st century Lebanon. In this context, his research focuses on the historical and contemporary development of the "Lebanese Left", particularly in relation to other more dominant local political forces. While he heavily relies on Gramscian optics in his studies, he is open to various models and methods. He was the President of the Secular Club at the American University of Beirut, which is where I know him from, as I participated briefly in the Club's political landscape during my undergrad years.  In this episode, we discuss a multitude of topics particular to Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria–from the various forces of power, oppression, hope, and resistance to the various moments and figures in history that shaped and reshaped the realities of millions of people, of institutions, of knowledge production, and so on.  The conversation was always rooted in the multifaceted anti-establishment movements in Lebanon, which inevitably requires us to constantly contextualize, analyze, and comprehend what these movements were up against, the tools they had (and didn't have) at their disposal, moments in which they were stubborn and moments in which they did the self-reflection necessary for more meaningful ways, and what it meant to be situated in the geopolitical context that was and is also constantly changing.  We break it down into two sections: Lebanon before 1990 and Lebanon after 1990, leading to the present conjuncture, where we end the episode on some reflections by Karim on what challenges and opportunities lie ahead, in such a pivotal moment.  For your reference, Isa and I compiled a small timeline of post-1990 Lebanon that could help you better understand the conversation (see below). Also, Karim mentions a lot of names of people as well as movements that I highly recommend looking up as you listen. It could be arduous and disruptive to pause and reflect at times, but doing so gives the experience - as well as Karim's voluntary work - the reflective value it deserves.  1990: Ta'if and beginning of Harirism / post-war neo-liberal order  2000: End of Israeli Occupation of South Lebanon  2005: Cedar Revolution + Assassination of Hariri + End of Assadist Occupation of Lebanon. 2006: July War (w/ Israel)  2008: “May 7” / Hezbollah “invades” Beirut 2011: Arab Spring (Focus: Syrian Revolution and War)  2015: “You Stink” Movement  2019: Thawra / October 17 Revolution  2020: Beirut Blast 2019-Present: Economic collapse  2023 Oct. 7–Present: Zionist onslaught + assassination of Hassan Nasrallah + End of Assad regime in Syria.  Finally, here are some pieces written by Karim:  13 Years After the Arab Uprisings: The Strategic Choices of Lebanon's Anti-establishment Movement Lebanon's opposition today: A story of perpetual crises Hezbollah couldn't save Gaza or Lebanon: Only state-building can ensure our future Karim's IG account: @safieddinekarim  PS: Special thanks to Chafic Mouharam for conversing with me over the past years about Lebanon. We were together in Toronto when the horrible Blast in Beirut took place and we processed, mourned, and reflected together. He helped inform some of my questions in this episode. Thank you, Chafic. It's no secret that Israel has sought to fully annex the West Bank for decades—and now, many believe the time may be near. For Rabbi Arik Ascherman, the struggle to defend Palestinians in the West Bank from settler attacks has become his life's work. But it's a task that is only becoming more difficult with time, as the extreme dehumanization of Palestinians becomes all-the-more normalized by the genocide in Gaza. Ascherman returns to The Marc Steiner Show to discuss the brutal violence unfolding in the West Bank, and what, if anything, can be done to address Israel's anti-Palestinian racism.Studio Production: Cameron GranadinoAudio Post-Production: Alina NehlichHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcast

Is the world turning a blind eye to the plight of Palestinians? Grace Batchoun, a Christian and Co-founder of  Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, joins Craig for a deeply personal conversation about the ongoing Occupation of the Palestinian people and genocide in Gaza. Grace shares her journey as a Palestinian Christian and highlights the dire situation in Gaza, challenging the narrative of Israel's self-defense.  Grace and Craig emphasize the need for Christians to align with the teachings of Jesus by advocating for peace and justice over death and destruction. Grace deconstructs the ongoing expansion of settlements, which defy international law and United Nations resolutions. How does this impact the lives of those in the region? The conversation unpacks the complexities of everyday life brought on by the Israeli Occupation of Palestinians, urging listeners to reconsider their perspectives and recognize the humanity of Palestinians.  The current humanitarian crisis and genocide in Gaza is another focal point. The severe conditions caused by Israeli blockades and refusal to work toward a ceasefire agreement—continuing the unending starvation, destroyed infrastructure, and families in distress. What does this mean for the people living there, and how can the international community respond? Craig and Grace also examine the role of evangelical Christian support for Israel. Does this stance align with the teachings of Jesus on peace and justice, or does it contradict them? Through personal stories and historical context, this episode offers a Palestinian perspective on displacement and life under occupation. Finally, the discussion sheds light on the broader implications of Israel's actions on international law and human rights. How do these actions measure up against the conventions established after World War II? Listen to this episode of the Bad Roman Podcast and join the conversation online as we navigate these challenging topics, encouraging listeners to reflect on justice, peace, and the power of global solidarity.   Learn More about Palestine: Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East   For Full Show Notes: https://www.thebadroman.com/show-notes/episode-121   3 WAYS TO SUPPORT THE PROJECT: TASTE IT BAD ROMAN SALSA, ADD TOTHE BAG thebadroman.com/donate, and share with a friend it (it's free!).   Key Moments and Starting Points: (0:22) Addressing the Gaza Crisis (2:07) Grace Batchoun's Background (4:09) Awakening to Activism (6:41) Humanitarian vs. Occupation Crisis (9:07) Misinterpretations Among Christians (12:12) The Reality of Gaza (16:30) Genocide or Defense? In a ruling on July 19, the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion that confirmed what Palestinians have been saying for over 7 decades: That the Israeli occupation is illegal, that the way Palestinians are treated by Israel is a form of apartheid, and that the occupation must end. This ruling includes the Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which have grown especially since the Israeli military withdrew from Gaza in 2005.As we are approaching 300 days of the genocide in Gaza and over 40,000 deaths at the hands of the US-funded and armed Israeli military, we wanted to talk more about the ICJ and this ruling. An ICJ advisory opinion cannot force a country to act, but can have a real impact on how the rest of the world approaches policy towards Israel. We're joined by Laith Aqel, human rights lawyer, a lecturer in the Human Rights Clinic at Yale and an organizer with the CT Palestine Solidarity Coalition. And later in the show, just days after the ICJ ruling Benjamin Netanyahu spoke in front of the US Congress as over 10,000 people rallied outside the Capitol. We'll bring you some of the speeches from that rally as well.Support the Show.

On July 18, 2024, the World Court (aka the International Court of Justice) issued an advisory opinion that found Israel to be an illegal occupation of Palestine and that the settlements must be dismantled, Palestinians must be allowed to return to their homes and they must be paid reparations. International human rights lawyer Francis Boyle talks to Clearing the FOG about how the court's opinion came about, what it means and how it can be used by activists in their communities to end the genocide in Palestine. Charged by the United Nations General Assembly to ascertain the legality of the continued presence of Israel, as an occupying Power, in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, on July 19th, 2024, the International Court of the Justice, the highest court in the world on matters of international law, determined that “The Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and the regime associated with them have been established and are being maintained in violation of international law.” It called for the end of the Occupation, the dismantling of the apartheid structure that supports and maintains it, and the removal of Israeli settlers and settlements. All member states of the United Nations are obligated to support each of these actions. Israel's response to this comprehensive and devastating report has been to dismiss it and hold itself above international law. In so doing it has sealed its reputation as a pariah state in the global community of nations. In today's special episode of Speaking Out of Place, we are honored to have eminent legal scholars Diana Buttu and Richard Falk join us to explain the significance of this historic document.Diana Buttu Haifa-based analyst, former legal advisor to Palestine Liberation Organization and Palestinian negotiators, and Policy Advisor to Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network.  She was also recently a fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. After earning a law degree from Queen's University in Canada and a Masters of Law from Stanford University, Buttu moved to Palestine in 2000. Today, Hunter is joined by Michael Letwin, former President of ALAA 2325 and longtime Public Defender at the New York Legal Aid Society. Today's episode is part one of the two-part coverage of the ALAA 2325 Ceasefire in Gaza resolution. To understand the resolution fully requires us to fully understand the patterns, practices, and history of ALAA 2325 when it comes to speaking about international events. With this context in mind, hopefully those asking why ALAA 2325 would choose to issue a ceasefire resolution can understand how that is directly in line with their organizational ethics. Finally, Hunter makes his pitch for why Public Defender organizations should be speaking out about international affairs.     Guests: Michael Letwin, Former President ALAA 2325 and long time Public Defender   Resources: ALAA 2325 Resolution Calling for a Ceasefire in Gaza, an End to the Israeli Occupation of Palestine, and Support for Workers' Political Speech https://www.alaa.org/media-releases/resolution-calling-for-a-ceasefire-in-gaza-an-end-to-the-israeli-occupation-of-palestine-and-support-for-workers-political-speech Bronx Defenders Union Statement https://drive.google.com/file/d/15Hzyy_ufSJ9h8GjiYdg4eRKdGIUyikRE/view A Statement by Jewish Members of the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys-UAW Local 2325 https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MJDXr9nANDCtcV76fxYNwNsxNbru3MYu5hLkCC3KrLY/edit New York Legal Aid Society Response https://legalaidnyc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Statement-on-Resolution-from-ALAA-UAW-Local-2325.pdf Bronx Defenders Response https://www.bronxdefenders.org/the-bronx-defenders-response-to-its-unions-october-20-statement/ News Coverage of the Resolution https://theintercept.com/2023/11/17/public-defender-gaza-legal-aid-bronx-defenders/ https://www.huffpost.com/entry/association-legal-aid-attorneys-public-defenders-palestinian-israel-resolution_n_655d2541e4b0c91d8278efcd https://freespeechproject.georgetown.edu/tracker-entries/legal-aid-lawyers-approve-pro-palestinian-resolution-after-federal-judge-dissolves-state-court-order-preventing-vote/ https://nypost.com/2023/12/19/metro/legal-aid-union-approves-pro-hamas-antisemitic-resolution-calling-for-boycott-of-apartheid-jewish-state-critics-say/ https://www.nysun.com/article/congress-to-probe-legal-union-over-anti-israel-resolution-opposed-by-nearly-a-third-of-its-members https://nypost.com/2023/11/16/metro/legal-aid-society-denounces-unions-antisemitic-resolution/ https://inthesetimes.com/article/palestine-resolution-unions-court-blocked https://www.thefp.com/p/alaa-legal-aid-attorneys-antisemitism-congress https://edworkforce.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=410256  https://www.nyclu.org/en/press-releases/congressional-subpoena-over-pro-palestinian-speech-violates-free-speech-alleges  ALAA 2325 History of Anti War Votes and Comments https://alaa2325.wordpress.com/1999/03/26/history-of-the-association-of-legal-aid-attorneys-uaw-local-2325/ https://alaa2325.wordpress.com/2003/04/14/alaa-antiwar-vote/ https://alaa2325.wordpress.com/2009/09/15/2009-09-15-urgent-appeal-to-alaa-members-defend-free-speech-at-legal-aid/ https://alaa2325.wordpress.com/2014/07/29/2014-07-29-updated-signers-173-of-mass-free-speech-grievance/ https://alaa2325.wordpress.com/2023/12/19/adopted-resolution-calling-for-a-ceasefire-in-gaza-an-end-to-the-israeli-occupation-of-palestine-and-support-for-workers-political-speech-association-of-legal-aid-attorneys-united-auto-w/ https://labornotes.org/blogs/2021/08/bottom-labor-solidarity-palestine-growing https://laborforpalestine.net/2022/07/26/press-release-uaw-2325-association-of-legal-aid-attorneys-votes-to-divest-from-israel-bonds/ https://docs.google.com/document/u/1/d/e/2PACX-1vQzS8V0UkBAdiBRbaSasIvKuu45SjEuQKwXMxdMO92DZBn7QNhF2nWbKZI6ALAYoZfFkqpckIt1QMdW/pub https://laborforpalestine.net/2023/10/26/sf-public-defender-staff-in-solidarity-with-palestine/ https://therealnews.com/ny-court-blocks-union-from-voting-on-gaza-ceasefire-palestine-resolution-uaw-legal-aid https://laborforpalestine.net/2023/11/26/digest-of-select-statements-and-positions-on-matters-of-public-concern-by-the-association-of-legal-aid-attorneys-uaw-2325/ https://laborforpalestine.net/2023/12/06/uaw-labor-for-palestine-rank-and-file-welcomes-our-leaderships-pro-ceasefire-announcement-demands-that-the-international-uaw-endorse-palestinian-trade-union-call-for-boycott-divestment-and/ https://laborforpalestine.net/2023/12/15/statement-against-genocide-alameda-county-public-defenders-chapter-ifpte-local-21/ https://laborforpalestine.net/2023/12/20/even-in-the-face-of-management-interference-and-an-illegal-restraining-order-alaa-uaw-2325-membership-has-overwhelmingly-passed-apro-ceasefire-anti-occupation-resolution-uaw-2325-labor-for-palestin/ https://www.huffpost.com/entry/public-defender-union-cease-fire-resolution_n_65832a11e4b03e698a11c6d7   Contact Hunter Parnell:                                 Publicdefenseless@gmail.com  Instagram @PublicDefenselessPodcast Twitter                                                                 @PDefenselessPod www.publicdefenseless.com  Subscribe to the Patron www.patreon.com/PublicDefenselessPodcast  Donate on PayPal https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=5KW7WMJWEXTAJ Donate on Stripe https://donate.stripe.com/7sI01tb2v3dwaM8cMN

This week, we delved deep into the heart of Gaza with Jason Shawwa, an American-born Palestinian who calls Gaza home. Joined by Ahmed Bedier and Samar Jarrah, Jason shared his poignant story against the backdrop of the ongoing humanitarian pause between Israel and Hamas - a ceasefire that hangs on by a thread and could snap any moment. Jason laid bare the raw reality of life in Gaza, offering us an unfiltered glimpse into the days of Israeli occupation and the challenges faced under a full blockade - and that's all before October 7th. He illuminated the tough choices residents face daily, providing a perspective often overlooked in mainstream narratives. Our conversation with Jason unfolded during a humanitarian pause, a fragile peace between Israel and Hamas. While this ceasefire has seen a couple of extensions, it could and likely will collapse any moment Jason's decision to remain in Gaza reflects the resilience of its people. The ceasefire has provided a temporary break in a conflict that's claimed nearly 20,000 lives, with a heartbreaking 70% being women and children. "This Is McCarthyism All Over Again": Suppressing Unions' Free Speech Rights over Gaza (w/ Allie Goodman, Michael Letwin, & Dany Greene)

With each passing day, more Israeli bombs are falling on Gaza, more bodies are being blown apart and buried under the rubble, over a million Palestinians have been displaced from their homes. Over the past month and a half, the world has borne witness to a genocidal military campaign to clear out Gaza once and for all, and every day, every hour, it feels like the chance to stop one of humanity's most inhumane crimes is slipping through our fingers, and the powers that be have shown no interest whatsoever in listening to the thundering calls for a ceasefire coming from governments and mass demonstrations around the world, particularly the Biden administration in the US, the increasingly fascistic Netanyahu government in Israel, and the arms manufacturers and war profiteers who are raking in billions from manufacturing mass death. This is prompting people of conscience around the world, including unions and worker-led groups, to speak out and take action to try to stop the slaughter. One of those unions is the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys – UAW Local 2325 (ALAA), whose members include legal aid workers at over 25 organizations, including the Bronx Defenders, Brooklyn Defender Services, Neighborhood Defender Service, and the Legal Aid Society of New York City. Last week, ALAA members were preparing to hold a vote on whether or not to approve the union publicly issuing a "Resolution Calling for a Ceasefire in Gaza, an End to the Israeli Occupation of Palestine, and Support for Workers' Political Speech." In the lead-up to the vote, union members at different legal aid offices reported strong opposition from management. “These statements call for the elimination of the state of Israel and the annihilation of the Jewish people,” Twyla Carter, Chief Executive Officer of the Legal Aid Society, reportedly told staff, expressing concern that certain donors would pull funding from the Legal Aid Society if the union passed the resolution. Then, on Thursday, Nov 16, as Akela Lacy reports at The Intercept, "attorneys at the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County sued in New York State Supreme Court to stop the vote, saying it posed an ethical dilemma for attorneys that would make it “impossible for them to properly do their job as Public Defenders.” Those four attorneys were ALAA bargaining unit members. "On Friday," Lacy continues, "the court granted a temporary restraining order enjoining the vote. Voting had gotten underway at 9 a.m. and only 15 minutes were left on the clock when the injunction was issued. The tally never got underway." In this urgent mini-cast, we speak about this unprecedented attack on union democracy and workers' free speech rights with three ALAA members: Allie Goodman, an attorney in the Family Defense Practice at Bronx Defenders; Michael Letwin, a former public defender at Legal Aid in Brooklyn for 37 years who also served as president of ALAA – UAW Local 2325 for 13 years; and Dany Greene, who has worked as a public defender for six years, four of which were spent at Bronx Defenders, where they helped found and organize the BXD Union, and who now works at an appellate office focusing on criminal appeals. In this episode, Scott Horton returns to the show. Scott is an anti-war and libertarian author and podcaster, as well as the director of the Libertarian Institute and senior editor for Antiwar.com. Scott was on the show last time to talk about the history of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This time, Scott is bringing the history of Israel and Gaza. In my recent episode with Kyle Anzalone we discussed some of the basic history and then focused on the current conflict and dynamics at play. Kyle mentioned that the phrase used about the Palestinians is that they "never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity." When you listen to summaries of the history by Ben Shapiro, he breaks down multiple times that the state of Israel has tried to give the Palestinians their own state, and they turned it down. I asked Scott to answer these claims, and other claims made about the history of the formation of the nation-state of Israel. The truth that Scott reveals is that the Israeli government is not exhausting all options for peace, but rather enforcing the status quo to preserve their hegemony. Listen to the full episode to get an in-depth breakdown of these different stages in the history of Israel and Gaza. In this urgent installment of “Not in Our Name,” an ongoing series on The Marc Steiner Show bringing together Jewish voices around the world speaking out against the Israeli Occupation, we go to the heart of the war that's taking place in Israel and Palestine. As Israel prepares to invade and flatten Gaza in retaliation for the Hamas-led attacks on Israeli kibbutzim and towns by the Gaza border on Oct. 7, the possibility of peace and an end to the Occupation seems farther away than ever. In this panel discussion, Marc Steiner discusses the world-changing events of the past week and the potential futures for Israel and Palestine with: Nir Avishai Cohen, a major in the reserves of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and author of the book Love Israel, Support Palestine; Joshua Saltzman, who served as an IDF combat medic in the Lebanon War; and Meron Rapoport, award-winning Israeli journalist, editor at Local Call, and the former head of the News Department in Haaretz.Studio Production: David Hebden, Cameron GranadinoPost-Production: David HebdenHelp us continue producing The Marc Steiner Show by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer:Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-pod-mssSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/nl-pod-stLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
