“A great war can hardly be avoided any longer.” This is the story of Nazi Germany's aggressive territorial expansion and the start of WWII.   The Treaty of Versailles has long been a thorn in Adolf Hitler's side. Its troublesome limits on troops and technology pose challenges for a man bent on taking lebensraum and building a Grossdeuschland by any means necessary. So he starts quietly building planes and submarines. Then he starts publicly adding a few hundred thousand more soldiers. By 1936, he's ready to move. He remilitarizes the Rhineland. When that goes well, he only grows bolder. He takes Austria. He takes Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland.  Many European leaders—particularly those not named Winston Churchill—fail to grasp just how far the Fuhrer will go. They hope to “appease” him. But when Adolf strikes again, brazenly seizing the rest of Czechoslovakia, even British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is ready to draw a line. That line is Poland.Connect with us on HTDSpodcast.com and go deep into episode bibliographies and book recommendations join discussions in our Facebook community get news and discounts from The HTDS Gazette  come see a live show get HTDS merch or become an HTDS premium member for bonus episodes and other perks. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. In an interview conducted in the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Emirati special envoy Lana Nusseibeh warned Israel that annexing the West Bank would cross a “red line” that would “end the vision of regional integration.” Today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is meant to hold a major ministerial consultation on whether to advance. Magid sets the scene and explains what Nusseibeh and the Emiratis are trying to get across to the Israeli public. Earlier in the week, on Monday, in Doha, Magid spoke with Majed al-Ansari, the spokesperson for Qatar’s lead negotiator, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, and heard the backstory of their frustrations over the negotiation process. We reset the scene and delve into the role of Qatar as negotiator for the Gaza war -- and other global conflicts. The United States said on Friday it will not allow Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to travel to New York next month for a United Nations gathering of world leaders, where several US allies are set to recognize Palestine as a state. A State Department official told Magid that a US visa ban on Palestinian officials planning to attend the United Nations General Assembly, would cover Abbas along with 80 other PA officials. Magid explains the mechanism of withholding the visas and how it dates to a report written during the Biden administration. Last week, Magid spoke with Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon about the impending slew of recognitions of a Palestinian state. Borschel-Dan notes that his remarks could be construed as dismissive: “These countries want to show that they are doing something, so they blow off steam by coming up with these declarative statements.” We hear Magid's takeaways from the conversation. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. During today’s day of disruption in the capital, protesters calling for a hostage deal have escalated their tactics, including torching bins in Jerusalem -- which police said damaged a car and caused nearby residents to be evacuated -- and gaining access to the roof of the National Library, near the Knesset, to hang banners. The activists are pushing for renewed ceasefire-hostage release negotiations this week ahead of the IDF's "Gideon's Chariots B" operation. Berman updates us on the communications between the mediation teams. The IDF said today that it is boosting operational and logistical preparedness for reservists called up for the military’s planned Gaza City offensive. Over the coming weeks, troops will participate in open-terrain and urban warfare exercises to strengthen readiness across the Gaza Strip. At the same time, yesterday, some 350 reservists signed a mass petition stating that they refused to rejoin the war. Berman speaks about the willingness of reservists to continue to fight and how the IDF is taking their needs into consideration. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio may visit Israel in two weeks, an Israeli official told Berman yesterday. We hear what may be on his agenda. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced Tuesday that Belgium will recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly later this month. Berman describes how the slew of countries may recognize the Palestinian state at the GA and how European countries are already clamping down on Israel. French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday decried the “unacceptable” US decision not to grant visas to Palestinian officials, including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas ahead of the United Nations General Assembly later this month, when France is also set to recognize a Palestinian state. A day before the GA kicks off, France and Saudi Arabia are holding a conference in New York promoting a two-state solution on September 22. We hear what the goals are for this conference and speculate on whether the visa decision may be reversed. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Commercial: Ingles Markets 7 STORY 1: Commissioners threaten lawsuit to stop Hickory Flat annexation Tensions are running high between Cherokee County and the city of Holly Springs over a proposed annexation in Hickory Flat. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has made it clear: if Holly Springs approves the annexation on Aug. 18, they’re ready to take legal action. The dispute centers on a 20-acre property at Lower Union Hill Road and East Cherokee Drive. Developer Garrard Development, Inc. wants to annex the land into Holly Springs and rezone it for a mix of single-family homes and commercial space. Originally, the plan included 92 townhomes, but those were scrapped after pushback. Residents aren’t thrilled. Over 600 locals have signed a petition opposing the project, citing concerns about traffic, density, and infrastructure strain. County officials argue the annexation violates a 2022 growth boundary agreement meant to guide city-county planning. The Holly Springs Planning Commission narrowly recommended approval, but with conditions—like no drive-thrus and a required privacy fence. Still, the county has flagged procedural issues, including errors in the application and a flawed traffic study. For now, all eyes are on the Holly Springs City Council. Will they approve the annexation or back down? Time will tell. STORY 2: Cherokee High welcomes Class of 2029 students at open house Wednesday was a big day at Cherokee High School. Hundreds of wide-eyed freshmen wandered the halls, clutching schedules and trying to figure out where the heck their classes were. It’s a rite of passage, sure—but this year, it felt different. This is the last group of students to start at the current campus before the school moves to its shiny new location next year. Cherokee High, the oldest high school in the county, has been a fixture on Marietta Highway since 1956. History teacher Erin Forman, a Cherokee alum herself, called it “bittersweet.” Principal Andy Hall, who also happens to be a dad to a freshman this year, said the day was full of smiles—and maybe a few nerves. With 705 freshmen joining the school’s 2,800+ students, Cherokee remains the largest high school in the district. And while the future of the current campus is still up in the air, Assistant Superintendent Rodney Larrotta said a team is working on it. For now, though, the focus is on celebrating the school’s history—and making this final year on the old campus one to remember. STORY 3: Roswell Street Baptist takes step toward merging with Woodstock church Roswell Street Baptist Church, once a thriving hub of faith in Marietta, has voted to merge with First Baptist Church of Woodstock, according to longtime member Joanne Thurston. The decision wasn’t exactly a shock—membership has been shrinking for years, and the church has struggled to find a permanent pastor since 2022. At its peak, Roswell Street was a powerhouse, with 9,200 members in 2014. Now? Weekly attendance hovers around 400. The pandemic didn’t help, but the decline started long before. The church’s 11-acre campus, once bustling, has seen better days. Parts of it have been demolished, and much of the space sits unused. Dan Moran, the transitional pastor, called the merger a partnership, not a takeover. For members like Elizabeth Rhodes, who’s been with the church for over 50 years, the choice is bittersweet. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Break: HISTORY CHEROKEE STORY 4: Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific merger to create nation's first transcontinental railroad Big news in the world of railroads: Union Pacific and Atlanta-based Norfolk Southern are merging to create the first-ever transcontinental railroad in the U.S. Yep, coast-to-coast. The deal, worth a jaw-dropping $250 billion, still needs federal approval, but if it goes through, it’ll connect 50,000 miles of track across 43 states and link 100 ports. Norfolk Southern’s Mark George echoed the excitement, calling it a “historic moment” for two railroads with deep roots in America’s economy. The combined company will be based in Omaha, but Atlanta isn’t losing its shine—it’ll remain a hub for tech, operations, and innovation. The merger could close by early 2027, pending regulatory approval. STORY 5: Georgia elections agency initiates voter roll scrub, audits PSC runoff count Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is kicking off a four-year process to clean up voter rolls, which could mean nearly 250,000 inactive voters get removed. Here’s the deal: 218,951 voters who haven’t participated since 2019 will get notices. If they don’t respond or vote in the 2026 or 2028 general elections, they’ll be removed by 2029. Meanwhile, Raffensperger is doubling down on election integrity. A hand count of ballots in the recent Democratic PSC runoff confirmed Peter Hubbard’s win, with just a two-vote difference from the machine count—well within the margin of human error. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on GLP-1 Foods Commercial: We’ll have closing comments after this. Day 662 – PM vows more aid to Gaza amid talk of siege, annexation

Welcome to The Times of Israel’s Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what’s happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Times of Israel founding editor David Horovitz joins host Jessica Steinberg for today’s episode. The situation in Gaza remains incredibly problematic and unclear, says Horovitz, with a lack of independent journalism in Gaza, complicating the narrative. For the moment, Israel has reversed its policy regarding aid to Gaza, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu didn’t invite his two far-right coalition members, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to the cabinet meeting discussing an increase of aid to Gaza. Horovitz discusses the mixed signals and strategic incoherence from the current government on this mix of issues. There is talk about getting aid into Gaza at the same time as unsourced reports that the army has proposed a tightened siege in the Strip, and held discussions of annexation or occupation in Gaza, offering a great deal of contradictory information, says Horovitz. Horovitz also discusses the wave of recommendations about excluding Israel from academic projects alongside instances of Israeli tourists requiring security assistance in various EU locations, amid the rising tide of criticism against Israel. People feel deeply troubled by what they are seeing and hearing about Gaza, he notes. Israeli negotiators are no longer in Doha for the ceasefire talks, although the terrorist organization Hamas has said it is trying to make this current proposal work. Horovitz says that Israel’s strategy is hard to fathom, given its insistence on military pressure in Gaza and Netanyahu’s continued endorsement of US President Donald Trump’s initial idea of helping Gazans leave, something that the US leader isn’t saying that any longer. He begins with Israel's controversial plan to annex Gaza, breaking down the geopolitical calculus behind Netanyahu's proposal and how Trump's public backing may signal broader strategic implications. From there, Ghost covers the aftermath of the recent coup in Niger, exploring the broader context of French neocolonialism, CIA meddling, and how African nations are increasingly turning toward BRICS and China for sovereignty and economic independence. He contrasts U.S. versus Russian and Chinese foreign policy in Africa, exposing the long game behind China's infrastructure investments and Russia's security alliances. Ghost also analyzes Saudi Arabia's push for regional power, a looming Turkish presence in Africa, and the bigger picture of a new multipolar world. This episode offers a grounded, high-level view of global realignment, with Ghost's signature ability to decode the headlines and spotlight the deeper moves shaping the future.

The far right in Israel has long dreamed of settling all of the West Bank, and Gaza, too—annexing the territories to create the land they refer to as Greater Israel. The Trump Administration might not object: Elise Stefanik, Trump's pick for Ambassador to the United Nations, has agreed that Israel has a “biblical right” to the West Bank. “I think Israel is just more emboldened with Trump in office,” says Hisham Awartani, who lives in Ramallah and is now attending Brown University. The reporter Suzanne Gaber has been covering Awartani and his family since he was left paralyzed by a shooting in Burlington, Vermont. (Two other Palestinian students, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ali Ahmad, were also shot and injured.) Gaber visited the Awartanis recently in Ramallah to find out how people in the West Bank are thinking about annexation. But, rather than a future event that might happen, the Awartanis describe annexation as a process already well underway. “I'm twenty-one years old,” Hisham tells Gaber. “ In the period of time that I've been alive, it's been a slow push.  It's, like, I'm the frog in the boiling pot.”
