Refute the Top 5 Gay Myths With this Incredible, Free eBook: https://ruthinstitute.org/top-5-myths Join us on censorship-free locals: https://theruthinstitute.locals.com/   In Part Two, Dr. Morse and Father Sullins review more of the data and get into the charts and graphs discussing why Talk Therapy is actually helpful.  Talk therapy, much to the chagrin of the Trevor Project, is about discussing things with a therapist. And, unsurprisingly, even when the therapy fails to change sexual orientation, not only does it have no negative effects, but actually reduces suicidality. The Rev. D. Paul Sullins, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Associate of the Ruth Institute. He recently retired as Professor of Sociology at the Catholic University of America, Washington DC. Dr. Sullins is a leader in the field of research on same-sex parenting and its implications for child development. He has written four books and over 100 journal articles, research reports, and essays on issues of family, faith, and culture. His reports on clerical sexual abuse from the Pennsylvania Grand Jury data, John Jay data, LA Times, and other sources have garnered international acclaim. Dr. Sullins continues as Research Professor and Director of the Leo Initiative for Social Research at Catholic University, as well as Director of the Summer Institute of Catholic Social Thought. He also serves on the board of the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS), the Center for Family and Human Rights (C-FAM), and the Natural Family Journal. He is a Fellow of the Marriage and Religion Research Institute (MARRI), and was Ignatius Loyola Fellow for Catholic Identity at the Center for the Advancement of Catholic Higher Education. Formerly Episcopalian, Dr. Sullins is a married Catholic priest. He earned a Ph.D. at Catholic University in 1997 and taught there from 1998 until his retirement. He and his wife, Patricia, have an inter-racial family of three children, two adopted. He serves as Associate Pastor of the Church of Saint Mark the Evangelist, Hyattsville, MD.

We have all heard about "pedophile priests" and the Church scandal. And while there are certainly cases of this and trauma caused many victims by abusive priests, for which there is no excuse, there is more to the story. What is the reason for it and are the number of cases actually greater in schools, homes, and other religions? And is the problem really pedophilia, or something else? Was the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report accurate or flawed? Hear Fr. Chris Alar explain what you need to know.Discover more about the Catholic faith on Divine Mercy Plus! What Catholics still don't understand about the abuse crisis

Three years ago, a Pennsylvania Grand Jury report described in graphic detail the abuse of over 1,000 minors at the hands of more than 300 priests. Then, Theodare McCarrick, an influential cardinal in the American Church, was found credibly accused of abusing minors and adult seminarians. For survivors, the news was painful, yet validating. How did this second wave of scandal–the news of both abuse and cover up–affect the Catholic faithful more broadly? What do they  believe caused the crisis? Did the Grand Jury report and news about McCarrick impact their faith and affiliation with the Catholic Church? Maggi Van Dorn, the host of the Deliver Us podcast, unpacks a new and ground-breaking survey conducted by America magazine and CARA in the latest episode of the “Church Meets World” podcast. *Audio correction: Only 33 percent of respondents said their parish actually helped them process the sex abuse crisis. The word “percent” was mistakenly omitted from the original file.  Related articles: Editorial: How you see the sexual abuse crisis Three years after the 2018 ‘summer of shame,' what do American Catholics think about the sex abuse crisis? In this episode, we feature the stories and voices of the Fortney sisters—5 women in Pennsylvania who were abused by the same priest. Four of the sisters, Carolyn, Teresa, Laura, and Patty talk about the trauma of the abuse, as well as the pain that came with sharing what had happened to them with one another, their parents, the church and the authorities. Most recently, the stories of the Fortney sisters were highlighted in the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report. If you missed last week’s episode, go back and listen to our interview with the Rev. Serene Jones, who talks about why it is both difficult and necessary to listen to survivor voices. Rev. Jones is president of Union Theological Seminary, an abuse survivor herself, and author of Trauma and Grace: Theology in a Ruptured World.

In this episode of “Deliver Us” we ask: Is the cover-up history? We talk to journalist Jason Berry, who reported on an abuser priest in the ’80s for National Catholic Reporter, as well as members of The Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, who broke the news of the sex abuse crisis in 2002. We ask them: how did the church cover up abuse? Then, we fast-forward to today to see whether or not the church is still hiding sex abuse. What can we learn from the past? And why is full transparency so difficult to achieve? Peter Steinfels, who has written critically about the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report for Commonweal, helps us understand the data. Unfortunately, we probably need to talk about the recent Pennsylvania Grand Jury report regarding the tragedy of child molestation by certain priests, and the Church's response to it. Certainly not our usual direction of discussion, but one we would be remiss to ignore. (As usual, we get to it eventually.) We're not experts in what to do about it—we just try to talk it out a little.
