In April 1989, a newspaper clipping about an art exhibit landed in the mailbox of the Rev. Donald Wildmon, the founder of a conservative evangelical group, the American Family Association. Partly funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibit included a now-infamous photograph by Andres Serrano that showed a crucifix submerged in Serrano's own urine. Incensed, Wildmon sent a copy of the photo to every member of Congress, setting off a battle led by the Christian right over what contemporary art could be and who should receive federal funding for it. Isaac Butler, an author and cultural historian, walks through this and other pivotal moments in the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s in his new book, “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America's Culture Wars.” Butler spoke to the Book Review's editor, Gilbert Cruz, about how these fights unfolded and what they meant for the artists themselves. He sat down to write the book, he said, when “it really felt like the culture wars of the '80s and '90s that I grew up in were repeating again.” Books and plays discussed on this episode: “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America's Culture Wars,” by Isaac Butler “Measure for Measure,” by William Shakespeare “Transgressions: The Offences of Art,” by Anthony Julius “It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful: How AIDS Activists Used Art to Fight a Pandemic,” by Jack Lowery “The Devil Finds Work,” by James Baldwin “Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz,” by Cynthia Carr “Elia Kazan: A Life,” by Elia Kazan “Fear No Pharaoh: American Jews, the Civil War and the Fight to End Slavery,” by Richard Kreitner “The Kindness of Strangers,” by Salka Viertel “The Talmud: A Biography,” by Barry Scott Wimpfheimer “My Last Sigh,” by Luis Buñuel Listen to and Follow ‘The Book Review' Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | YouTube | iHeartRadio Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts, and explore everything from politics to pop culture. THE DIVIDED CHRIST by Lenvel E. HaleIn your hands lie the answers to the most perplexing questions of modern Christianity. We have all experienced frustration and confusion while trying to understand the teachings of the church. From the true purpose of Jesus Christ's arrival nearly 2,000 years ago to the divergent teachings of Sabbath keepers and Sunday keepers, the divisions between the many Christian denominations can be baffling.Hale's thoughtful analysis, The Divided Christ, serves as the bridge that spans the abyss between those divisions to more effectively serve the word of Christ. Motivated by the desire to unify the disparate teachings of the various churches, Hale seeks to recall the original meaning of the scriptures and reveal the truth within them.Reading like a personal journal, The Divided Christ follows the spiritual development of the author as he explores various Christian denominations from the inside and shares his knowledge with you. His conversational tone and presentation of biblical facts, however, enable each reader to draw his or her own conclusions based on the evidence presented. In its efforts to transcend the teachings of people to attain the true meaning of Christ's words, The Divided Christ may serve as an inspiration to begin one's own journey of discovery and as a reference to be used throughout one's life.Lenvel E. Hale is an Arkansas native whose lifelong pursuit of biblical truth inspired his debut book, The Divided Christ. Driven by a desire to reconcile the divisions among Christian denominations, Hale combines his personal experiences with a deep avocational interest in early church manuscripts and anthropological data.An active community leader, Hale sponsors the Faithful Youth Challengers, leads adult Bible studies, and edits a monthly scriptural publication. He is also a member of the NRA and the American Family Association.Hale works as a maintenance supervisor for Whirlpool Corporation and lives in Fort Smith, 1 Arkansas, with his wife, Dolores, with whom he shares four children. He is currently finalizing a collection of poetry.https://www.amazon.com/Divided-Christ-Lenvel-Hale/dp/080593765X#detailBullets_feature_divhttps://www.primixpublishing.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/61826lhah.mp3
Send us Fan MailWhy did I write The Christian Past That Wasn't? Answering that question requires me to revisit season one of the podcast and reflect on the rise of Christian nationalism in the African nation of Uganda in 2009. More recently, my work in fact-checking started with a pundit named Bryan Fischer who once broadcast on the American Family Association radio network. As I contended with Fischer, I found out that most of his material came from David Barton. Ultimately, my views changed from an inconsistent combination of Baptist distinctives and American civil religion to where I am today -- a strong supporter of separation of church and state. I wrote the new book to shed light on the heritage of religious tolerance and pluralism in the United States. You can now order the book at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Today Mary welcomes back Trey Dellinger to talk about Wisconsin’s Governor Evers’ “Capitol capitulation” in vetoing AB 105, designed to protect our kids from online adult content. Evers vetoed this bill that was passed by the Republican legislature requiring all porn online users to give ID to prove age. Being the first governor to veto such protective legislation, residents should be extremely disappointed in this partisan upsmanship. The reasons he gives regarding protecting the ID of the users hardly shows a genuine concern for the minds and hearts of our kids. We also discuss some of the other ways to protect our kids online. Trey Dellinger is the Senior Legal Fellow of AFA Action, the government affairs affiliate of American Family Association. Mary welcomes back Trey Dellinger, the Senior Legal Fellow of AFA Action, the government affairs affiliate of American Family Association. Trey has his finger on the pulse of the moral issues that affect our churches and our families. Today we look at the current SCOTUS cases on trans athletes in women’s sports. Trey gives us the rundown on those cases and why he has reason for optimism. Then we look at the first amendment as it relates to protesters storming churches. Whether it’s for attention or to bait Christians about race and their perspectives on what is important, we have to see what our rights are as believers. We also take a look at how our kids can be better protected online, since parents aren’t always the best gatekeepers – although that is their job. Finally we look at Human Trafficking Prevention month. So many moral issues, how do we keep up, and how can we help pastors keep up as well? Mary welcomes Trey Dellinger to talk about some of this year's significant Supreme Court cases, which of course can affect the entire nation eventually. Protecting our kids is so important, and this includes primarily these days, what we expose them to. With threats from transgender therapy/surgeries, the porn industry, and simple library books, there is no such thing as being too diligent. Trey Dellinger is the Senior Legal Fellow of AFA Action, the government affairs affiliate of American Family Association. The impact of AFA on pro-family issues is recognized nationwide, and they have been diligent to defend and protect family values since its founding in 1977 by Donald Wildmon. It's interesting how those with an agenda steamroll any notion of common sense when it comes to raising our children. In fact, those with an agenda seem to think that our kids are their kids. An encouraging podcast that helps parents see that they are not alone in the fight to let our kids be kids, free from blatant immorality and obscenity. Mary welcomes back Jameson Taylor of American Family Association to continue our focus this week on engaging the culture, for the common good. While the gatekeepers change, the rules of engagement do not: the Bible as the moral authority for every human who ever lived. Today we shine a light on some of the important issues. Speaking of the rulebook, we chat about Texas and Oklahoma's reintroduction of the Bible into public education. Bold and likely to be framed as forcing our worldview on others, there is no forcing, considering we as believers have been enduring the worldly worldview our entire lives. It's more of a skirmish in a much wider war. We discuss discourse in the face of marketplace vitriol from those who want to be self-ruled; Costco's decision not to distribute the abortion pill; and some activity in the Wisconsin legislature. We can never be over-equipped in a world that still needs to figure out what a woman is. Guest host Micah Clark—Executive Director of the American Family Association of Indiana—welcomes Glenn Stanton, Director of Family Formation at Focus on the Family, for a no-nonsense conversation about what the data really say about marriage, motherhood, faith, and family. Glenn unpacks fresh research (including his recent Federalist piece) showing married women—especially married moms—report the highest levels of life satisfaction. They also explore why cohabitation isn't a “trial marriage,” how faith drastically lowers divorce risk, and why stable, married families lift communities and shrink government dependence. In segment two, Micah & Glenn tackle the myth that the American church is collapsing, drawing insights from Glenn's book The Myth of the Dying Church and the surprising revival-energy among Gen Z. They discuss how elites “talk left but live right” on marriage, why children flourish best with a married mom and dad, and why public policy should stop undermining the very institution that makes people freer and happier. If you care about culture, policy, and the next generation, this episode gives you research-backed clarity—and hope.Focus on the Family resources: fotf.orgAFA of Indiana policy papers & Micah's weekly email: AFAIN.netSupport the show & partners: FullSuiteWealth.com • MyPillow.com (promo code TODD) • ToddHuffShow.comFreedom Marketplace: https://freedommarketplace.net The Stack: https://www.toddhuffshow.com/stack-of-stuff Email: todd@toddhuffshow.comPhone: 317.210.2830Follow us on…Instagram: @toddhuffshowFacebook: The Todd Huff ShowTwitter: @toddhuffshowLinkedIn: The Todd Huff ShowTikTok: @toddhuffshowSupport Our Partners:https://www.toddhuffshow.com/partners Show Sponsors: https://www.mypillow.com/todd Promo Code: TODD Red, White, & Brand – Text TODD at 317-210-2830 for a 10% discount.SolTea – Heart health made simple. Send us a textGUEST: M.D. Perkins, director, Culture Warrior documentaryA culture warrior is one who works to change the prevailing perspectives and practices that characterize a society.Christians are often demeaned as culture warriors for their work opposing abortion, pornography, homosexual “marriage”, the transgender movement, and more. And yet what is rarely mentioned is that there were and are culture warriors on the other side who worked to push all this sin on our nation, one founded on Christian principles in order to “fundamentally transform the United States of America” (Barack Obama).MD Perkins, the director of the new documentary film, Culture Warrior, joins us to discuss the call Christians have to be salt and light in our society in light of the example of Don Wildmon, founder of American Family Association and a Christian culture warrior who boldly persevered in pushing back for decades against the onslaught of godlessness in the media and broader society. We'll tell you how you can watch this compelling and inspiring documentary today during the program.---------------------------------------

Too many boys are turning to virtual worlds of television, video games, digital media, and the internet to find realms they can conquer and areas where they can excel. The result of this virtual conquest is often apathy, apparent rebellion, or outright resistance to real-world challenge. How can a biblical worldview speak to this issue and offer young men a flourishing vision for their future? Today's guest is Mark Hancock, who is the CEO of Trail Life. Mark began his career founding a national advertising agency and running it for fifteen years. His conversion to Christ led him into ministry as a Youth and College Pastor, Associate Pastor, Homeless Ministry Director and Global Event Director for an international ministry, organizing events on five continents. He holds two Masters Degrees in the Mental Health Counseling field, having spent several years in private practice, and has taught at secular and Christian colleges. Mark has been a guest on numerous radio and television programs including: Fox Nation's Starnes Country, Family Life Radio, Focus on the Family, and James Dobson's Family Talk Program. In 2017, Mark was named to the American Family Association's '40 Faithful'. An author, award-winning writer, and conference speaker, he serves as Chief Executive Officer of Trail Life USA and lives near Greenville, SC with his wife of over 30 years. They have two sons. Send us a textGUESTS:ABRAHAM HAMILTON, General Counsel and Public Policy Analyst, American Family AssociationSOEREN KERN, Managing Editor, The Christian Worldview JournalTheoretical physicist Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, “The earth is the insane asylum of the universe.” A more Biblical assertion would be: “The earth is the sin asylum of the universe.”For that is the common denominator between two seemingly unrelated issues that we will discuss this weekend on The Christian Worldview. The first is a recent case before the United States Supreme Court as to whether the state of Tennessee is within Constitutional rights to ban what is euphemistically referred to as “gender affirming care” for children. That “health care” includes administering powerful drugs and hormones to minors that alter sexual development and irreversible surgeries to remove reproductive body parts.Abraham Hamilton, General Counsel and Public Policy Analyst for American Family Association and the host of The Hamilton Corner radio program will join us to discuss that. While we in America debate the illogical and impossibility of changing one's sex, people in Syria are concerned about the basics of life after an Islamist militant group just ousted long-time dictator Bashar al-Assad.What does this mean for the broader Middle East and specifically for neighboring Israel? Soeren Kern, geopolitical analyst and managing editor of The Christian Worldview Journal will join us in the second half of the program.-------------------------------The Christian Worldview Journal is our NEW monthly print publication. Each issue will feature articles by Soeren Kern, David Wheaton and other featured contributors and will address important topics relating to geopolitical news, US events and matters of faith in addition to highlights and products from The Christian Worldview.Sign-up for the first three issues for FREE! To ensure that you continue to receive the Journal monthly after March 1, sign-up to become a Worldview Partner.
