Last month, the FBI raided the homes of Scott Ritter, a former United Nations weapons inspector and critic of American foreign policy, and Dimitri Simes, a former think tank executive and an adviser to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. In late August, The New York Times reported that these searches were part of the U.S. Justice Department's “broad criminal investigation into Americans who have worked with Russia's state television networks.” In the past two weeks, U.S. officials have taken numerous measures against Russia Today and its affiliates and accelerated police actions against Russia-based individuals and entities accused of covert influence operations, including money laundering, sanctions violations, and unregistered foreign agent work. For example, the Justice Department announced the seizure of 32 Internet domains used in Russian government-directed foreign malign influence campaigns (colloquially referred to as “Doppelganger”), alleging that Russian companies used online domains to impersonate legitimate news entities and unique media brands to spread Russian government propaganda covertly, violating U.S. laws against money laundering and trademarks. That same day, the Justice Department indicted two Russia-based employees of RT for conspiring to commit money laundering and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act in a $10-million scheme to fund and direct a Tennessee-based company to publish and disseminate information “with hidden Russian-government messaging.” A day later, officials charged Dmitri Simes and his wife with participating in a plot to violate U.S. sanctions and launder money obtained from Russian state television. About a week later, the U.S. State Department issued a special “alert to the world,” declaring that new information obtained over the past year reveals that Russia Today has “moved beyond being simply a media outlet” and has become “an entity with cyber capabilities” that's “also engaged in information operations, covert influence, and military procurement.” Washington claims that the Russian government embedded within RT in Spring 2023 an entity “with cyber operational capabilities and ties to Russian intelligence.” Based on these allegations, Meta — the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — soon announced that it had banned Russia Today and its affiliates from all its platforms. A day before that big announcement from the State Department, a jury in Tampa, Florida, convicted four American citizens of conspiracy to act as agents of the Russian government. Case evidence first reported by RFE/RL shows that the activists on trial secretly coordinated their activities and received funding from “Anti-Globalization Movement” head Alexander Ionov, who acted on orders from Russia's Federal Security Service. To discuss this recent explosion of American police and diplomatic activity targeting RT and Russian covert influence operations in the U.S., The Naked Pravda spoke to RFE/RL journalist Mike Eckel, who coauthored the September 6 report on how Ionov and his FSB handlers “chatted and plotted to sow discord in the United States.” Timestamps for this episode: (5:54) The U.S. government's coordinated campaign against Russian covert influence operations (7:18) Legal strategies when prosecuting Moscow's malign activities (8:37) Alexander Ionov and the FSB (15:11) American activists and Russian covert operations (18:52) “Foreign agency” in the U.S. vs. in Russia (32:12) Dmitri Simes and Channel One (36:18) Scott Ritter and Russia TodayКак поддержать нашу редакцию — даже если вы в России и вам очень страшно

Incoming transmission from Hopeton Overton Brown, better known as Scientist. As a protege of dub pioneer King Tubby, Scientist represents dub's third generation—at least that's how his 1981 collaboration with Tubby and Prince Jammy, First Second, and Third Generation, puts it. Originating in Kingston, Hopeton earned his nickname from Bunny Lee due to his highly complex mixing skills, who famously opined, "Damn, this little boy must be a scientist.” These days he's living in Los Angeles, where he joined host Jason P. Woodbury for this all-new episode. Prepare to cover a lot of ground, as we move from his origins at Channel One and Tuff Gong to divine messages, run-ins with Lee "Scratch" Perry, aliens and angels, simulation theory, his suspicions about modern cannabis strains, the digital vs analog debate, and much more.

Welcome to the fifth episode of our new Russian-language podcast Then & Now with me, Teresa Cherfas. With me today is Marina Ovsyannikova, the Russian journalist who shocked the world with her anti-war protest on 14 March 2022, which went live on Russian State TV's prime time news programme “Vremya”. Since that moment, she has been through such a rollercoaster of adventures – fleeing Russia with her daughter, work as a journalist in Germany, and now her recent relocation to Paris. Her book Between Good and Evil recently came out in three languages and will soon be published in four more. No doubt other languages will follow. This recording took place on 19 April 2023.Marina Ovsyannikova's autobiographical Between Good and Evil describing her life in Moscow as a journalist and the media ‘propaganda factory' that works on behalf of the Kremlin is published by Post Hill Press, March 2023, pp190, ISBN: 979-8888450505.You can also listen to the podcast on SoundCloud, Podcasts.com, Spotify, iTunes, Google Podcasts, Anchor and YouTube. My questions include:Marina, how do you remember 24 February 2022? Could you have imagined that such a thing could happen? Or did the invasion by Russian troops of Ukraine come as a complete surprise to you? What was your job at Channel One then? When did you start working for the state TV channel? What does it mean to you to be a conscientious and professional journalist? Were there instances in the past when you and your colleagues might have acted differently? What thoughts were going through your head that prompted you to act on 14 March? Tell us how it happened. I've heard that an English journalist unwittingly played a key role in your decision to act.Weren't you afraid of the consequences? You are a mother, you have children …Did Channel One introduce new procedures after your protest to make sure it couldn't happen again? What happened to you immediately afterwards? You were placed under house arrest. Did you have an electronic bracelet? How long did that period last and were there people watching you? When did the offer of help to flee Russia come? What did you decide to do?In the end, it was a very big adventure! Tell us in as much detail as you can about your escape. How did you manage to get the bracelet off?Are you in touch with your husband? And with your mother? What about your son?A new law on digital conscription was recently introduced. What does this tell you about the path Putin is taking Russia down in the years to come? Are you afraid for your son?Vladimir Kara-Murza was recently convicted of treason and given a sentence of 25 years' imprisonment. What are your thoughts about this? Are you afraid for yourself? How has your daughter coped through all these dramatic events and changes to her life?Do you think your former colleagues at Channel One are still genuinely and sincerely committed to their jobs? What is life like for you in Paris? How do you see your future?
Drumming first hour then Carlton Livingston Like so many Jamaican artists, singer Carlton Livingston was first exposed to the joys of music in church. Born in 1962 in St. Mary, Jamaica, Livingston sang in choirs and in an informal harmony trio (which later morphed into Knowledge) before entering the music business in earnest when he recorded "The Tale of Two Cities" in 1978 at Channel One. He eventually ended up working with several of the top Jamaican producers, including Coxsone Dodd, Winston Riley, Sly & Robbie, Clive Jarrett, and King Jammy, among others. His signature song, "100 Weight of Collie Weed," was a huge island hit in 1984, and was the feature song on the subsequent album Fret Dem a Fret. Livingston recorded sparingly thereafter
Kicking off 2023 the Broads dive into a gum-tastrophe in Tennessee schools. One lawsuit filed in Tennessee alleges that allowing gum-chewing in classes has jeopardized learning. Plus there is a tangent about caning and Channel One. Do you remember? Sources for this episode are as follows:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_P._Fay

Challenge accepted! For our last "regular" episode of Season 3 (before our holiday party and best of 2022 shows), we discuss the artists who continue to challenge us, defy expectations, and create uncompromising art. Some of these artists have such deep catalogues that it can be daunting to take it all in, some may be too esoteric or eccentric to immediately grab you. But the 25(!) artists that we pick during this episode have one thing in common...stick with them, and their music will reward you handsomely. In other words...you'll come around, Gregg! On the other hand, there are certain artists who we find immediately appealing...even if it took 40 years, like the Atlanta band Current Rage. To celebrate the 40th anniversary reissue of their 1982 mini-album Seven Songs on Propeller Sound Recordings (now generously expanded to 15 tracks) is guitarist John Moore, drummer Paul Lenz, and singer/guitarist Oliver Bewley (son of late Current Rage singer Chris Bewley). It's a powerful rock n' roll story about family, loss, redemption and second chances that you won't want to miss. It's the Penicillin Sound! Get the Seven Songs reissue at: https://propellersoundrecordings.com/ About Current Rage: Current Rage are a four-piece, post-punk, musical group that played live in the Southeastern United States during the early eighties. They were comprised of Chris Bewley, John Moore, Pat Kirkland, and Paul Lenz. In the landscape of a fertile, burgeoning Athens/Atlanta music scene Current Rage gained notoriety and a loyal following performing with such musical icons as REM, Pylon, Swimming Pool Q's, The Fleshtones, The Bush Tetras, and The Bongos. Eventually Current Rage would headline shows on their own at such iconic venues as Athens, GA's 40Watt Club, Atlanta's 688 Club, Chapel Hills's The Cat's Cradle, Birmingham's The Nik, and Nashville's Frankensteins. Current Rage first formed in 1979 when skaters, Chris Bewley and John Moore, began writing songs together after school on a pair of second-hand guitars. The two first met as early teen-agers having been recruited separately by Mike Maloof, founder, and manager of Atlanta-based Progressive Skate shop. Bewley and Moore traveled the Southeast competing and marketing Maloof's “Equalizer” skateboard decks and “Accelerator” wheels. Eventually, Moore was recruited by the Z-East team, in Jacksonville, Florida to ride professionally for their Z-Flex brand of decks and wheels. While Bewley was recruited by Sabre Skateboards out of northern Alabama to represent their laminated skate decks at competitions and demos. In the summer of 1979 Moore entered his freshman year at Georgia Tech University and Bewley was invited by his older brother Randy to join his group Pylon as they made their way to New York for their first show opening for Gang of Four. During this trip Bewley became immersed in the New York post-punk music scene and was inspired to start a band of his own. Once back in Atlanta Bewley and Moore began writing songs and practicing. The early version of Current Rage was Bewley and Moore on guitar, Pat Kirkland on drums and Norman Hanson on lead vocals. In mid-1980 Current Rage performed their first show in Athens at the 40th Watt Club opening for The Method Actors. Next, they performed at Atlanta's newly opened 688 Club with The Swimming Pool Q's. Current Rage became the “go to” opening act that year at the 688 Club performing several times each month opening for numerous national and regional acts. By the beginning of 1981 Current Rage was headlining shows in both Athens and Atlanta and began venturing out to Charlotte, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Birmingham. Once the band had found their true drummer in Paul Lenz, who they enticed away from the Atlanta underground band, Vietnam, the original drummer Pat Kirkland shifted his focus to lead vocals and supplemental percussion while Hanson left to start his new band Feast of Friends. Current Rage released an indie label E.P. album called Seven Songs on EOD Records in late 1982. Current Rage was known for short catchy post punk tunes dripping with danceable irony as well as darkwave surf instrumentals. “Seven Songs” was produced by legendary Athens-Atlanta engineer, Bruce Baxter. Baxter had engineered the B-52's single, “Rock Lobster”, Pylon's debut album “Gyrate” followed by the debut albums of The Swimming Pool Q's and Love Tractor. Current Rage's album was the first release on Ron Bond's EOD (Entertainment on Disc) Records. “Seven Songs” was recorded in April 1982 at Channel One studios with Bruce Baxter handling engineering and sound mixing and was released in late October. It is highly regarded by record collectors seeking out early eighties DIY releases. The first pressing of “Seven Songs” yielded 400 copies that were sold primarily at Southeastern independent record stores. Garnering significant east-coast distribution from Important Records, the band rushed to press another 500 records within three months of the initial release. Current Rage gained significant regional buzz from college radio stations WRAS, WREK and WUOG among others across the southeast who played songs like ‘Waikiki' and ‘Sweet Torture'. They also released several music videos that were played regularly in Athens-Atlanta area nightclubs and screened on the weekly music video show on Channel 36 WATL in the early-years of the MTV era. Anthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone magazine wrote, “an enviable and impressive explosion of new music was emerging from the Atlanta-Athens area at this time” in his Rolling Stone magazine feature article charting the explosion of innovative bands coming out of Atlanta-Athens in 1983. He noted Current Rage as “An up-and-coming standout.” Current Rage has shared the stage with such local legends as Pylon, REM, the Method Actors, The Roys, The Brains, The Swimming Pool Q's, Love Tractor, Vietnam, Kilkenny Kats, and the Side Effects. By 1983, they will have also performed with Col. Bruce Hampton's Late Bronze Age, and Tinsley Ellis' Heartfixers, as well as Guadalcanal Diary and Jason and the Nashville Scorchers. Current Rage's lyrics sketched out wry, lyrical observations about pop-culture fads in “Right Side of the Brain” and “Gidget goes Digital” and expressed vivid, realistic, expressions of common psychological experiences in “Sweet Torture” and “Bitte Schӧn [Beat to Shame]”. In some of their most memorable songs they championed mock-anthemic choruses that affirmed ordinary, everyday, phenomena such as living with an aging dog in “My Dog Sam” or scoring some cool shirts at thrift stores in “Bag of Shirts”. Current Rage's distinctive sound is brash, energetic, and rhythmic, showcasing two drone-based guitarists with crunchy, first-position chords strummed beneath chiming post-punk leads on top of fast frenetic drumming. The relative scarcity of “Seven Songs” today suggests the item does not circulate on the marketplace often. The combination of a small batch release plus, eye-catching three-color cover art, and short catchy songs connects you to the ‘golden age' of the Athens-Atlanta music scene. After Current Rage ceased performing each of the members followed different paths. Paul played drums in several successful bands, The Nightporters, Drivin-n-Cryin, and Michelle Malone's Drag the River. In 1983 he founded a successful musical charity, Rat Aid, which raised much needed funds for targeted relief of local area members of the Atlanta music scene. Today, Paul has a successful audio visual production business in metro Atlanta. Pat had a successful modeling and acting career in Los Angeles, later moving to Phoenix. John returned to school eventually becoming a humanities professor at a college in South Carolina where he still teaches today. Chris took up a career in graphic design gaining a position with the United States Printing Office in Washington D.C., a skill he developed designing concert flyers for local bands and clubs in Atlanta and Athens. In 2018 while living in Charlotte Chris succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 57.

We're back with another wild one here at Queen Venerator. Sean's pick for this week is a "mixtape" of songs that got him into music before high school. This is a VERY 90's heavy episode as Sean and Brad discuss Blind Melon, Bush, Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, and a bunch of movie soundtrack songs. Did you know that Deee-Lite did a cover of "You Sexy Thing" for the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack? You do now. Also, since its Sean and Brad, they stray from the topic to discuss Channel One, Exit 13, Brujeria, and Fruitopia. Also also, eagle-eared listeners might be able to tell that Brad is sick as hell during this recording and struggling to stay upright. Fun! Also also also, YO PEANUT, BEAT THAT THING! Russian state-funded Channel One journalist Marina Ovsyannikova made international headlines on March 14, when she appeared behind the anchor of an evening news broadcast, holding a poster against Russia's so-called "military operation" in Ukraine.
On March 14, during a live broadcast on Russian state television network Channel One, a station employee named Marina Ovsyannikova ran out on stage behind the news anchor, unfurled an antiwar sign, and shouted antiwar slogans. After the broadcast, Ovsyannikova was immediately arrested; she was later convicted of participating in an unauthorized protest and fined 30 thousand rubles (about $250). The authorities are now conducting a preliminary inquiry into Ovsyannikova. Meduza special correspondent Svetlana Reiter spoke with Ovsyannikova about her start at Channel One in the 2000s -- and why this war was her breaking point. As the war against Ukraine grinds on, Russia's state television networks continue to rack up resignations. Last week, Channel One employee Marina Ovsyannikova staged a one-person antiwar protest on a live news broadcast; special correspondent Zhanna Agalakova resigned from the network at the same time. Shortly after, Dmitry Likin, who has worked as Channel One's art director for over 20 years, submitted his resignation as well. Meduza special correspondent Svetlana Reiter spoke with Likin about his decision. Original Article: https://meduza.io/en/feature/2022/03/21/i-was-taught-that-every-life-is-priceless
We work in a newsroom here at KSL. A giant floor where there's a section for radio, another for KSL-TV. We all see each other in the break room and work together. And for the life of Jeff, he can't imagine a staff member here running onto the TV news set standing behind Deannie Wimmer and holding up in a protest. But in another newsroom far far away that's exactly what a staff member did. In a country that's been washed clean of truth, Russian TV airs Vladimir Putin's myths 24/7. The absence of honesty leaves a vacuum filled with stories about glorious Russian liberators ridding Ukraine of Nazi animals. But in a newsroom, you have access to the truth. You have tv feeds that come in unvarnished from around the world and at Russia's Channel One, the entire staff is complicit in whitewashing this war. Except for one woman. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
March 16, 2022. 21 Days of War. If you want to see how Putin's war will play out, you have only to look at Russia's past. When Russia backed the Syrian military in 2011, we saw cluster bombs, thermobaric weapons, chemical weapons, and Putin's penchant for victim blaming. That the war in Syria devolved into utter chaos only played into Putin's hands. Now that the West has largely shunned all things Russia, Putin's ploy is sputtering out in Ukraine, but he won't give up. We explore how The White Helmets, a humanitarian-aid organization that has accumulated hundred of videos documenting the atrocities in Syria, fell victim to the Kremlin's disinformation apparatus. With the bombing of a maternity hospital in Ukraine, we're seeing the same tactics play out again. In Odessa, Russian naval vessels appear to be preparing for a landing. In Mariupol, citizens are held hostage in a hospital, trapped in a theater and a public swimming pool, the humanitarian crisis worsens. In Moscow, Channel One editor Marina Ovsyannikova was given the chance in court to refute her criticism of Putin's war. She refused. CORRECTION: We need to make a correction to our reporting for this episode. We did not have a clear understanding of the circumstances that resulted in the release of Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov. We incorrectly stated that his release was due to a special military operation and not negotiations. That was incorrect, and actually the opposite is true. Ivan Fedorov was released from custody in exchange for 9 captured Russian conscripts.

Marina Ovsyannikova is an employee of Russia's state Channel One television interrupting the channel's main news programme on Monday night in an extraordinary act of protest against Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. She burst on to the set of the live broadcast of the nightly news on Monday evening, shouting: “Stop the war. No to war.” - holding a handwritten sign to the same effect. The protest was welcomed by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky who mentioned it in his televised address last night.. And within hours of her protest, more than 40,000 people had left comments on the journalist's Facebook page, with many praising her for taking a stand. I speak to illustrator Owen Cyclops @owenbroadcast about the meaning of creating "right-wing art", leaving the framing of the left and building our own perspective on reality, his evolution from psychedelic hermit to Christian family man, conspiracy theories, psychedelics as a portal to enlightenment or a trap, worldviews and cosmologies as a necessary frame, forbidden literature, rediscovering western mysticism, Mormonism as a religion of the family, growing a family, being a father and much more. We also discuss Owen's new collection of comics, Channel One, a beautiful book that I very much recommend. His recommended subversive thinker is Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/aksubversive/message
