Alright, this one is straight out of a horror movie—but unfortunately, it's all too real. A 46-year-old Maryland woman, Candace Craig, will be spending the rest of her life in prison for brutally murdering and dismembering her own mother with a chainsaw. And as if that wasn't twisted enough, she then tried to blame the whole thing on her own daughters. Even the prosecutors were left stunned. Assistant State's Attorney Shauna Coleman, clearly at a loss for words, summed it up perfectly: “This happens in movies and books, not in real life.” But here we are. This nightmare unfolded on May 23, 2023, at the family's home near Hyattsville, Maryland. And what was the alleged motive? A credit card dispute. Yeah, you read that right. A fight over money led Candace Craig to commit one of the most gruesome crimes in recent memory. After killing her 71-year-old mother, Margaret Craig, authorities say Candace took things to an unthinkable level—she chopped up her mother's body. And she didn't do it alone. Her 21-year-old daughter, Salia Hardy, was dragged into this mess too. According to prosecutors, the two of them tried burning Margaret's remains on a grill—while also cooking chicken at the same time, apparently thinking the smell of BBQ would somehow cover up the stench of burning human flesh. Because nothing says “totally normal backyard cookout” like gasoline and human remains on the grill. Salia Hardy was later charged as an accessory after the fact. Her defense argued that she has learning disabilities, making her especially vulnerable to manipulation. She ended up taking a plea deal and later testified against her mother. When the case hit the courtroom, it was as disturbing as you'd expect. Judge Karen Mason didn't mince words when she called Craig's actions “something so unimaginable.” Then she handed down the ultimate punishment—life in prison without parole. And while the details of this case could make even the most seasoned crime reporter queasy, the prosecution didn't want to focus on the horror. Instead, they tried to shift attention to Margaret Craig's life rather than just the brutality of her death. “I would instead like to preserve the memory of Margaret Craig,” Coleman said, choosing to honor the victim rather than dwell on the carnage. One of the most damning pieces of evidence came from Salia Hardy herself. She testified that on the night of the murder, she heard her grandmother scream, but her mother brushed it off, saying something just fell in the basement. Oh, and then she casually warned her daughter not to go into grandma's room. The next day, when Hardy was home alone, she made a horrifying discovery—her grandmother's lifeless body, stuffed in a bin with a trash bag covering her head. And if that wasn't disturbing enough, Candace Craig didn't even try to justify what she had done. Instead, she told her daughter that they had to get rid of the DNA. The options she suggested? Acid, burning the body, or dismemberment. You know, just a casual brainstorming session about how to cover up matricide. Prosecutors laid out exactly how methodical Craig was. She went to Home Depot (because of course she did) and bought grilling supplies, including a can of gasoline. But her plan didn't go smoothly. When they tried to burn Margaret Craig's body on the grill, the fire got out of control, prompting neighbors to step in and help put it out. Firefighters were even called—yet somehow, no one discovered the body at that time. By the next morning, with the fire out and the remains "cooled off" (Hardy's words, not mine), they brought Margaret Craig's charred remains back inside the house. That's when Candace allegedly took a chainsaw to what was left, dismembering her mother in the basement. When police eventually arrived for a welfare check on June 2—after a 911 caller reported they hadn't heard from Margaret in days—they were hit with a smell that could only mean one thing. You guessed it—decomposition. Officers found blood and tissue on the floor. They found three white plastic trash bags. One of them? Contained what looked like brain matter. And sitting nearby? A knife and a chainsaw, both covered in human remains. During trial, Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Pamela Ferreira revealed that investigators recovered 67 pieces of Margaret Craig's remains. But here's the unsettling part—some body parts were never found. The condition of what they did find showed clear signs of both burning and dismemberment with a mechanical saw. While it was clear she was murdered, the exact cause of death? Still undetermined. After sentencing Craig to life without parole, Judge Mason left her with some haunting words: "What we have here is a woman who led a good life and left this world in such a way. And only you know, Ms. Craig, exactly what happened here." And that's the terrifying part. Only Candace Craig knows exactly what happened that night. So, what's left? A daughter who will forever be haunted by what she was forced to witness. A mother whose life was taken in one of the most violent ways imaginable. And a community still struggling to understand how someone could do something so horrific—especially to their own family. There are brutal crimes, and then there's this. And while Candace Craig will never see the outside of a prison cell again, the real question is: What kind of person does this to their own mother? Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Standing ovations from the U.S. Congress have only emboldened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose new killing spree threatens a regional, if not an even larger war. Tens of thousands of mourners packed the streets of Tehran for the funeral of the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated early Wednesday, July 31st in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran. Haniyeh was visiting for the inauguration of the country's newly elected president. The murder of Haniyeh and his bodyguard, just days after Israel killed a Hezbollah top commander in a drone strike near Beirut, causes many knowledgeable experts to say that a regional or even larger war is inevitable. Talk therapy, much to the chagrin of the Trevor Project, is about discussing things with a therapist. And, unsurprisingly, even when the therapy fails to change sexual orientation, not only does it have no negative effects, but actually reduces suicidality. The Rev. D. Paul Sullins, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Associate of the Ruth Institute. He recently retired as Professor of Sociology at the Catholic University of America, Washington DC. Dr. Sullins is a leader in the field of research on same-sex parenting and its implications for child development. He has written four books and over 100 journal articles, research reports, and essays on issues of family, faith, and culture. His reports on clerical sexual abuse from the Pennsylvania Grand Jury data, John Jay data, LA Times, and other sources have garnered international acclaim. Dr. Sullins continues as Research Professor and Director of the Leo Initiative for Social Research at Catholic University, as well as Director of the Summer Institute of Catholic Social Thought. He also serves on the board of the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS), the Center for Family and Human Rights (C-FAM), and the Natural Family Journal. In this episode, Dr. Vasudevan and Dr. Moreno unpack our patient's experience with weight and how it's impacted his life.Share your reactions and questions with us at Speak Pipe . We might feature you on a future episode!=== Outline ===1. Introduction2. Chapter 1: Personal Relationship to Weight3. Chapter 2: Impact of Weight on Mental Health4. Chapter 3: Relationship with PCP5. Conclusion=== Learning Points ===Commonly used measures of obesity include BMI and waist circumference. These measures are imperfect, since they are attempting to quantify adiposity. Patients often undergo an emotional journey that is related to their weight. Many patients prefer to move towards tangible end goals such as increased mobility, lowered risk for future adverse health events, or other factors rather than a specific weight, BMI, or waist circumference.Screening and treatment of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression can be instrumental in the care of patients who have elevated BMI. Be sure to ask permission to discuss the patient's weight before jumping in. Set SMART goals with your patients and set expectations early.=== Our Expert(s) ===Dr. Jorge O. Moreno is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine.Dr. Moreno is originally from Mexico and is also fluent in Spanish. He grew up in New Rochelle, NY and completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia University in 2006. In 2011, he obtained his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. In the second episode of our hypertension series, Taylor and Dr. Gallagher discuss lifestyle modifications and medications used in the treatment of high blood pressure.Share your reactions and questions with us at Speak Pipe . We might feature you on a future episode!=== Outline ===1. Introduction2. Chapter 1: Setting goals3. Chapter 2: Lifestyle modifications4. Chapter 3: Initiating Pharmacotherapy5. Chapter 4: Adherence to Medications6. Conclusion=== Learning Points ===Most patients with hypertension would benefit from having a low blood pressure, regardless of the degree of lowering.Recognize that asking patients to start medications can be a large ask for a patient, especially if they are otherwise healthy and have several other conditions to manage. Lifestyle modifications—such as reducing salt intake and drinking water—may lower blood pressure to some degree. However, finding such “low-hanging fruit” in lifestyle modifications is difficult, and providers should not shy away from pharmacotherapies. Firstline therapies for lowering blood pressure include long-acting calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors/ARBs, and diuretics. Optimizing a patient's regimen may require a combination of therapies, and combination pills may be effective in improving adherence.=== Our Expert(s) ===Benjamin Gallagher, MD, FACP is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine (General Medicine) at Yale School of Medicine.=== References ===2017 ACC/AHA/AAPA/ABC/ACPM/AGS/APhA/ASH/ASPC/NMA/PCNA Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults: A Report of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines. In the first episode of our hypertension series, our patient Taylor joins us for a discussion on receiving and coming to terms with a diagnosis of high blood pressure.Share your reactions and questions with us at Speak Pipe . We might feature you on a future episode!=== Outline ===1. Introduction2. Chapter 1: Taylor's Story/Hypertensive Urgency3. Chapter 2: Defining Hypertension4. Chapter 3: Measuring Blood Pressure5. Chapter 4: White Coat Hypertension6. Conclusion=== Learning Points ===The ideal target for a patient's blood pressure is based on their risk score for cardiovascular events and mortality in the long term. Measurement of blood pressure in an office setting is often performed in nonideal conditions.Out-of-office monitoring of blood pressure monitoring should be used whenever possible. The “white coat effect” refers to high blood pressure that is above a patient's treatment goal in the office, but below their treatment goal at home. This effect is still clinically significant.=== Our Expert(s) ===Benjamin Gallagher, MD, FACP is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine (General Medicine) at Yale School of Medicine.=== References ===2017 ACC/AHA/AAPA/ABC/ACPM/AGS/APhA/ASH/ASPC/NMA/PCNA Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults: A Report of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines. Today's guest hails from Hyattsville, Maryland, a growing inner ring suburb of Washington, DC. Danny Schaible is a city councilperson, a Strong Towns member, and the founder of the Hyattsville Street Design Team. We know you're going to want to hear more about that last one especially! Schaible has a degree in landscape architecture and spent years working for the National Park Service. He brings that love of public space and awareness of design issues to his leadership in the Hyattsville City Council. Like so many people you've heard from on this show, Schaible got pulled into local politics when an issue in his neighborhood grabbed his attention—in this case a misguided and poorly-thought-out development down the street. As he became involved in learning and advocacy around that project, he eventually decided to step up and run for city council, and won in 2019. In addition to that, he also got inspired to start a “street design team” in his city after reading about the concept in the Strong Towns book, Confessions of a Recovering Engineer. His team of dozens of residents has discussed the book together, conducted bike tours and walk audits, and looked at crash data on dangerous stroads in Hyattsville, among other things. We hope this conversation gets you thinking about how you might even organize something similar in your own city. ADDITIONAL SHOW NOTES “Establishing a Street Design Team” (online course from Strong Towns' Local-Motive Tour). Confessions of a Recovering Engineer (book). Toole Design (planning firm). In episode 197, we get curious about grass for Lucas of Hyattsville, Maryland, Amelia of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and Ezra of Wisonsin. Which animals rely on grass as a food source? When did people start caring about how beautiful their lawns looked? Does grass die in the winter? Learning about grass is much more fun than watching grass grow.Visit the Curious Kid Podcast Website - http://www.curiouskidpodcast.com Send Us An E-mail - curiouskidpodcast@gmail.comLeave Us A Voicemail - 856-425-2324Support Us On Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/CuriouskidpodcastShop Curious Kid Podcast Merchandise - http://tee.pub/lic/fqXchg3wUVUFollow Us On Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/curiouskidpod/Follow Us On Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/curiouskidpodcast/Follow Us On Twitter - https://twitter.com/CuriousKidPodGet 10% Off Fairy Tales Hair Care Camp Essentials With Coupon Code CKP10 - https://fairytaleshaircare.com/pages/all-collections?utm_campaign=backtocamp&utm_medium=podcast&utm_source=curiouskidpodcast&utm_content=ckp10

Learning throughout one's life encourages social inclusion and improves one's health. There's a substantial correlation between learning and improved health, especially among older adults. The notion of life-long learning encompasses not only the acquisition of job-related credentials but also the promotion of learning throughout one's life to improve overall well-being. While 73% of older adults in the United States of America consider themselves lifelong learners, educational engagement tends to decline as people become older. Still, it's never too late to gain new skills and information. This presents a challenge to organizations, employers, and policymakers, who must guarantee that everyone has the opportunity to obtain, retain, and acquire new skills throughout their lives. Toward these goals, This Is Getting Old, with our mission to move toward an age-friendly world, features Part 7:Lifelong Learning of the 10-part AARP/ Age-Friendly Social Innovation Challenge. Watch the full episode or listen to the podcast to learn more about valuable programs and innovative solutions specifically designed for older adults and healthcare providers. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Does Julio's Case Sounds Familiar? Julio is 55 years old and lives in Hyattsville, MD, with his wife, three children and dog, Fluffy. He has worked as a hospice nurse for nine years now and loves his work. But, Julio feels stuck and burned out. The pay isn't great, and he has to work about 70 hours a week to make ends meet. Julio would love to see fewer patients and learn to be a manager. Still, sometimes he thinks he would have better chances in IT. So, Julio thinks of leaving healthcare altogether and enrolling in a technical community college. ✔️ Lifelong Learning - Problem Statement Julio needs a way to increase income and job satisfaction and find a life-work balance because he's burned out and unhappy. This problem results from the employer's lack of attention, support and employee development programs designed to help care workers thrive and grow within the healthcare industry. ✔️ Lifelong Learning - Innovative Solutions Identify nonprofit or public resources that can provide low-cost or free career counseling or training services for mid-career workers or the 55+ cohort, including how to advocate with employers. If recommended and feasible, continuing education may be undertaken. Encourage Julio's employer to create pathways within the organization for upward mobility, including training, mentoring, job exploration, and higher pay. This might occur through partnerships with local community colleges, for example. Research concept of unionizing, organizing workers in the caregiver industry to achieve fairer working conditions (higher pay, fewer hours, meaningful support on the job, opportunity for promotion). ✔️ Nobody's Too Old To Learn Lifelong Learning involves being intentional about learning new things - no matter how old you are. Essentially, participation in cultural and recreational activities is essential for our health and the quality of life in our communities as we age. Thus, older adults should increasingly participate in lifelong learning programs and bring a lifetime of experiences to intergenerational programs - like ice skating! Besides, there's nothing wrong with learning a new physical skill and an intellectual one! Both types of lifelong learning are beneficial! ✔️More Ways To Help Julio The challenges that Julio faces could potentially be made better if he worked for an Age-Friendly Employer - and if you haven't heard of that program, you can check out episode 58 with Tim Driver, Founder and CEO of Age-Friendly Ventures. Another option for retooling could be finding an Age-Friendly University, and if you haven't heard of this initiative, please check out my interview with Dr Joanne Montepare in Episode 55. You may also have another idea for a solution - or know of a program that would help older adults and their families facing similar challenges. Please add your comments below this video - or on my website where you can find this episode - MelissaBPhD.com We'd love to hear from you! -------------------------------------------------------------- If you have questions, comments, or need help, please feel free to drop a one-minute audio or video clip and email it to me at melissabphd@gmail.com, and I will get back to you by recording an answer to your question. Listen in as we discuss some tips for healthy dialogue and connection with these ladies (and those who share their concerns). Highlights 3:56 “Researcher Rita” 5:48 “Super-helper Susan” 7:18 “Fearful Franny” “Franny is worried. She's worried about you. She's worried about the baby worried. You'll get a flat tire on the way to the birth center. Worried your midwife won't make it in time and your baby will be born on the bathroom floor like that woman in the lifetime movie. She's just worried. But this worry isn't exclusive to your birth. And it'll probably continue on long after you've had your baby, it'll just be directed at other things. ” - Sam LeGassick Follow Along www.instagram.com/samantha_legassick https://www.facebook.com/groups/createdforbirtheducation Click here to download my Free Guide to Hiring the Right Doula For You Sources mentioned in today's episode MacDorman MF, Mathews TJ, Declercq E.
