Pete Krebs has played guitar in so many influential Portland bands that it's hard to list them all: Hazel, Golden Delicious, The Stolen Sweets, The Portland Playboys, and Thee Catnip Brothers. He started his journey playing in punk bands and now he plays Western Swing at the rodeo every year in Pendleton, Oregon. He's a two-time inductee into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, and he's survived cancer twice. I met Pete for the first time in 1992 when our bands played together in Virginia at a club called The Insect Club. It was his band, Hazel, my band, Five Eight, and the Spinanes. Someone got naked onstage and we almost got beat up and very nearly didn't get paid. The next time we played together was in Portland and that night I heard Pete play a song that has haunted me for 30 years. In this interview, I finally find out the name of it and the original artist. Wild. You can find the infamous photo that brought all of this together on the Crash and Ride Facebook page. This week, we have a lively chat with graphic designer extraordinaire Aaron Draplin. Though Aaron is best-known as a visual artist – everything from magazines to books to concert posters to a US postage stamp – music is at the core of his work and upbringing. During our call, Jason talks to him Aaron about his music influences, his love for design of all stripes, his trajectory as a guitarist and the music lessons he’s taking from fellow Portland resident Pete Krebs and much more. The Fretboard Journal has just launched its first ever subscription drive. If you haven’t joined us yet, now is a great time. We’ll be sharing all-new podcasts, videos and articles all month long: https://www.fretboardjournal.com/columns/support-the-fretboard-journal/ This episode is sponsored by Roberto-Venn and Retrofret Vintage Guitars.
Our guest for episode 19 is the musician Pete Krebs. Pete is somewhat of a legend on the Portland scene. His band Hazel broke through in the early '90s at a similar time to Heatmiser. As well as playing numerous shows with Elliott Smith, Pete was also good friends with him - the pair drank in the same bars and worked the same construction jobs to fund their music careers. They even released a split seven inch record together in 1994, with Pete's Shytown as the A-Side and Elliott's No Confidence man on the other side. We were delighted when Pete agreed to be on the podcast. Not only does he talk through his favourite song pick for us, when we told him that Rhys Buchanan, a British journalist, was visiting Portland, he took him round a few of the old places he and Elliott used to play in and drink at. So, in this episode, we begin by Pete sharing his thoughts on his favourite song before cutting to Pete's car driving through the streets of Portland, where he points out some of the famous venues they used to frequent. **Extra things to look at/listen to:** * Say Yes by Elliott Smith on Spotify: [https://open.spotify.com/track/7zVfEu1dEvRw4EkWoqrBkx?si=rNX93AzBTv2opoC3W4dXSA](https://open.spotify.com/track/7zVfEu1dEvRw4EkWoqrBkx?si=rNX93AzBTv2opoC3W4dXSA) * Either/Or by Elliott Smith on Spotify: [https://open.spotify.com/album/5hryhrT7wEdLnZCbJX9F6L?si=GvA4gXkoSo6O607_H7bmVw](https://open.spotify.com/album/5hryhrT7wEdLnZCbJX9F6L?si=GvA4gXkoSo6O607_H7bmVw) * Shytown/No Confidence Man by Pete Krebs and Elliott Smith on Spotify: [https://www.discogs.com/Elliott-Smith-And-Pete-Krebs-Shytown-No-Confidence-Man/release/1014717](https://www.discogs.com/Elliott-Smith-And-Pete-Krebs-Shytown-No-Confidence-Man/release/1014717) * Nice profile piece on Pete from PDX Monthly: [https://www.pdxmonthly.com/articles/2015/11/23/one-legendary-musician-unites-decades-of-portland-music](https://www.pdxmonthly.com/articles/2015/11/23/one-legendary-musician-unites-decades-of-portland-music) My Favourite Elliott Smith Song is produced by Rob Comba and Elizabeth Withstandley. We're at World Cup Coffee and Tea at Northwest 18th and Glisan for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation…now in our second year. Today Pete Krebs is in the coffeeshop with me. Maybe you knew him as a Rock Star with the band Hazel and with Elliot Smith. Or maybe when he did a one-eighty and founded a Gypsy Jazz band in the late 1990s. The delicious Swing of Stolen Sweets followed that, followed by Honky-Tonk and country. His band the Earnest Lovers is tearing it up currently…Earnest as in Ernest Tubb, you know. Along with Pete Krebs and his Portland Playboys. He’s one of the most interesting people on earth and that’s not a beer commercial. It’s been quite a trip for Mr. Krebs. Let’s meet him.
Pete Krebs is having his best week ever. After a sold out revival of his cult punk band Hazel for their HAZEL: Live in Portland release, to the release of Hey! Pete Krebs! and induction into The Oregon Hall of Fame, he's made his mark. Take a listen to his story on this week's episode of Gritty Birds Photo: John Eckenrode Produced and edited by Jeni Wren Stottrup at XRAY Studios Tracks: Big Fattie and Jilted from HAZEL: Live in Portland and Kid Domino from Hey! Pete Krebs! Theme song: Lucky from Bryson Cone Transcribed by Aimee Burton
This week’s show: curveballs and home runs. New developments are on deck in the saga of Oregon’s art glass makers, and for one act trying to get recognition for its entirely ironic band name. Plus we bring back a favorite from last year, to get you primed for Wordstock. Hope you’ve got your helmet on — all the best bombs are dropping! Thanks for helping us make this listener-supported show every week. Give a gift, before you do anything else this weekend. Supreme Court Will Hear The Slants Trademark Case — 1:18The U.S. Supreme Court says it will hear a case pitting Portland-based all-Asian electro-rock band The Slants against the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The band has been fighting to trademark its name since 2011. The PTO denied the request on the grounds the name is racially disparaging. Bandleader Simon Tam says it’s unconstitutional for government to use offensive speech as a basis for rejecting trademarks. The high court refused to hear a similar case involving the Washington Redskins, but a ruling in the Slants’ favor could help the team. Listen Back: Ursula LeGuin at Wordstock 2015 — 3:15The Library of America has just published some key early work by literary great Ursula K. Le Guin. “The Complete Orsinia” is a fascinating early lab in which Le Guin explored life under oppressive regimes. We thought it was a good time to listen back to our conversation with Le Guin at Wordstock 2015. Le Guin discusses her process, her guide to writing, “Steering the Craft”, and more. (You can find a longer version of our interview here.)Uroboros To Close In Early 2017 — 13:52Portland art glass manufacturer Uroboros just announced this week the company plans to close its plant on North Kerby Ave. early in 2017. Glass has been made there for more than 43 years. The company’s president Eric Lovell cited market conditions, the real estate value of the central location, and the cost of new environmental regulations. Lovell also said that his own impending retirement as a factor. Glass artists including San Diego’s Cathy Coverley called the loss of Uroboros “terrifying.” Portland-born Writer Fighting To Save Harlem Landmark — 17:04Portland native Renee Watson, now with the I, Too Collective in New York, was in town this week for some fundraising. Langston Hughes was the heart and soul of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and ‘30s. His brownstone on East 127th street in Harlem is a national landmark but it’s been mostly empty for decades. As Harlem’s real estate scene goes upscale, Watson is leading the effort to preserve the building. We listen back to an August conversation she had with NPR - Weekend Edition’s Scott Simon. In Other Words, Portlandia No Longer Welcome — 22:14The feminist bookstore In Other Words servers its ties with the IFC series, Portlandia. Looks like Candace and Toni will be looking for new digs. Any suggestions?Pete Krebs’ Autumn Trifecta — 23:41A huge month for singer, songwriter, and rock & roll survivor Pete Krebs: he’ll be inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame on October 8th, and is launching two new records at the same time — a career retrospective, called “Hey Pete Krebs” and a new Hazel live album, excavated from 1993 recordings. Krebs earned his chops in Portland’s 80’s punk rock scene, and has been a mainstay on country, jazz, and indie stages around town ever since.(photo cred. Jeremy Balderson)
Pete Kreb's career can be read as an index marker for Portland's musical identity. He came up a scruffy kid when the city was a dark, dank proving ground for punk. He got his musical passport stamped at all the legendary clubs playing in bands like Thrillhammer and Hazel.Pete Krebs has a big trifecta in October - he just released a career retrospective of songs called, “Hey Pete Krebs”. He's also getting back together with Hazel bandmates to celebrate the release of a recently-unearthed 1993 live recording. And he's about to be inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. Listen up as one of the city's great songwriters takes a victory lap. (photo cred. Jeremy Balderson)
