I'm thrilled to have the insightful and amazing Ian Cron with us today. You may know him as the author of The Road Back to You, the famous Enneagram book. He's back with a new book, The Fix, about making the 12 steps accessible daily. Ian reveals how the 12 steps can serve as an emotional and spiritual health trellis. These steps are practical, transformative, and essential for our growth. I'm excited for you to listen to this show. It's beautiful and heartfelt. Another Americana song that Ian recommends is Amsterdam by Mary Gauthier. The TV show Ian is watching right now is Slow Horses. He loves this one! Ian has been telling people about This Is Happiness by Niall Williams lately. It's like word candy, and he can't get enough of it. On the non-fiction front, Arthur Brook's book Build the Life You Want is super great! The title can throw you off, but this is a great book. And Brook's book Strength to Strength is a good one to help you find the qualities you bring into the world. The product Ian has told a friend they have to try is the Magic Bullet. He said the creator is a genius! Listen now: Listen now on Apple Podcasts and Spotify Watch Alli on YouTube I hope you loved this episode!

Mary & Blake discuss everything YOU had say about to Outlander episode 7.13 - Hello Goodbye. In this episode, we discuss overall enjoyment, then dive into listener feedback covering diverse perspectives - praise for character badassery, criticism of a "cringy" love scene, and mixed reactions to wedding scenes. Discussing historical context and moral complexities of certain characters, we also recount Mary's humorous birthing class anecdote highlighting Blake's struggles. Key topics include pacing, cohesion, adaptation challenges, and Mary's clever hot chocolate analogy. Plus we have a little love for The Leftovers. Also in this episode: We discuss the unique and endearing relationship between characters Ian and Rachel. Some listeners expressed discomfort or criticism around certain storylines, such as the length and believability of the Ian and Rachel wedding night scene, as well as confusion over the resolution of the Jerry McKenzie storyline for show-only viewers. The historical context and moral complexities surrounding characters like Lord John and William, who were slave owners, acknowledging the importance of understanding the time period. Mary shared a humorous personal anecdote about attending a birthing class with Blake, highlighting the awkward and uncomfortable moments they experienced. Listeners provided feedback on the cohesion and pacing of the episode, with some feeling it was more scattered compared to previous episodes with interwoven plotlines. We're encouraged to read the novella "A Leaf on the Wind of All Hollows" to better understand the Roger and his father storyline, and mentioned a two-part study on the topic available on their YouTube channel. We expressed hope for better cohesion and more satisfying storytelling in future episodes, while also discussing the importance of letting some mysteries remain unsolved, referencing the theme song from the show "The Leftovers." The podcast concluded with a playful reference to the song "Let the Mystery Be" by Iris Dement, emphasizing the theme of mystery and intrigue in Outlander. Guitarist and session ace Richard Bennett joins me on the show this week. Originally from Phoenix, Richard spent the first big chunk of his career in the 70's LA studio scene, before moving to Nashville in the 80's where he's been a mainstay in studios ever since. Richard is known as one of the ultimate sidemen and spent 17 years in Neil Diamond's band, playing on all of his records and tours from '71 to '87. Richard has had another long-term sideman gig playing guitar in Mark Knopfler's band since '94, and that continues to this day, touring in his band and playing on all of his records, including the latest “One Deep River” from this year. Aside from those impressive long-term gigs, Richard has played on countless sessions and gigs for artists like Roseanne Cash, Marty Stuart, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Iris Dement, and Waylon Jennings. He also loves to write and record his own music, and is constantly working on the next set of tunes to get into the studio to document. His latest is called “Talltale Tunes” and it's a killer record of great playing, tone and creativity. Richard is also an in-demand producer and has helmed an impressive list of albums in the last few decades as well. He had a huge role in the Nashville session scene of the 80's and 90's that continues to thrive, and I loved getting a chance to hear about that era of Nashville. I've spent the last year playing in a band with Richard called The Volcano Brothers, playing all 1920's and 30's Hawaiian music, with Richard playing ukulele. While we just play tiny local gigs around Nashville with that band, I still get to see and hear Richard's amazing touch on his instruments, and the dedication and the preparation that he puts into every show, no matter how small! He's an incredible musician, an encouraging band-mate, and an inspiring person to be around, and we had a very enjoyable conversation about his history in music and the recording studio. EPISODE 119: Island Hopper Songwriter Fest Special. Erick Willis: In a time when many artists are striving to find their identity, Erick Willis is slowly leaving his mark on the scene, with a personality that is true and not just a stage persona. Taking cues from the music he was raised on Erick is blending soulful melodic lyrics, with the deep groove of roots-rock and as his lyric says, "with some of the harder stuff." Showcasing a smooth voice with an excellent upper register, uniquely gravely at times, and always pleasant to the ear, Erick is bringing lots of soul to the mix, along with undeniably Texas inspired lyrics. Robinson Treacher: At the crossroads of Blues, Folk, Americana, and Country, you'll find the music of Robinson Treacher. He has shared the stage with notable artists from Vince Gill, Arlo Guthrie, and Tedeschi Trucks Band to Los Lobos, Iris Dement, G.E. Smith, Jorma Kaukonen, and Willie Nile. Robinson has been featured on Sirius/XM's series, "The Loft: Live from The Living Room," and has been a frequent guest of legendary DJ John Platt on New York's famed WFUV Radio. A native New Yorker, Robinson was raised in formidable music scenes from downstate New York City to the upstate Adirondacks. erickwillis.com | robinsontreacher.com Contact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

DEVIL PUT THE COAL IN THE GROUND is a moving portrayal of resilience by the people of West Virginia that reveals – despite years of corporate greed and exploitation – how a deep love of family, community and tradition has carried them through it all. From the realities of a crumbling economy, to the ravages of the opioid epidemic, to the irreparable environmental damage and its tragic impact on human health – the film is a cautionary tale of unfettered corporate power, and an elegy to a vanishing Appalachia. Uniquely structured upon personal storytelling of West Virginians, the film draws upon their rich experiences and diverse perspectives in order to create an informal, oral “People's History of West Virginia”. These individuals run the gamut – from recovering opioid addict, to environmental activist, to U.S. Congressional candidate, to town judge, to recovery center nurse, to corporate environmental lawyer, to struggling local business owner – all of whom, despite their differences, remain linked by the love of their home state and the challenges that threaten their survival, and way of life. DEVIL PUT THE COAL IN THE GROUND features the iconic music of Steve Earle and Iris Dement, while blending intimate first-person storytelling with rare archival photography from DOCUMERICA luminary Jack Corn. Stunning aerial footage, bespoke animation, and an original score complete this heartfelt elegy to a vanishing Appalachia. Co-directors Lucas Sabean and Peter Hutchison stop by to talk about how this film started as an entirely different project and why the humanity and emotional rawness of the film's subjects made it clear that they deserved to have a film built around their stories. We'll also dig deeper for some tracks from The Ravens, The Golden Nuggets, The Beach Boys and a little bit of Dr. John. Join us on our free form journey!

Today I'm rejoined by the journalist and author Douglas Valentine (@DouglasValentine77) to discuss his work for Woody Harrelson investigating his father, Charles Harrelson. This episode lays the groundwork for understanding Valentine's relationship to Daniel Sheehan and how this working relationship began. Along the way, Valentine discusses the Karen Silkwood case, his previous work, the Christic Institute and Daniel Sheehan, and the very complicated and messy nature of his work charting out espionage and drug networks. artwork by @deep_red_bells Songs: Friend of the Devil by the Gr8teful Dead I Don't Want to Get Adjusted to This World by Iris DeMent
Mark Manning is a son, a brother, a partner, and -- based on the chunk of an evening I spent with him for Episode No. 110 -- one heck of a fine human being. He's also the host of the Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI, 90.1 FM here in Kansas City, so please consider tuning in to his progrum. This came up in our conversation and bears repeating here: Mark gets it. He understands what good content should sound and feel like, and he's a fantastic conversationalist, so -- even though this particular chat ran a little long -- it was worth every minute. What, you might be asking, could Mark and I have talked about for over three hours?Well, let's see...We dove into community radio. We spent some time talking gardening. We looked at potatoes, KCK, LGBTQIA, McDonald's, Mark Kelpe, Iris DeMent, pouring concrete, Greek and dorm life, David Bowie, Little Richard, theater, and hate crimes. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a few of Mark's favorite albums, which were these:Blue (1971), Joni MitchellBowie's Hunky Dory (1971)Moon Shadow (1972), LaBellePrince & the Revolution's Parade (1986)It's unclear to me why you're still here reading this when you could be listening to our conversation, but...to each his/her own.Either way, thank you.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are clips from a tune called, "Halfway to the Moon," and that track is by Phish, the greatest band in American music history. And that cut comes from a badass (haters be damned) record from 2014, called Fuego (c/o 2014 Phish).

The daughter of two preacher's kids, Pieta Brown's early upbringing in Iowa was in a rural outpost with no furnace, running water, or TV. There, she was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, Greg Brown, the now beloved Midwestern folk singer. Later, while living with her mother in Birmingham, Alabama during her formative years, Pieta drew on and expanded these influences and began writing poems and composing instrumental songs on piano. By the time she left home at 18 she had lived in at least 19 different houses and apartments between Iowa and Alabama. In her early 20's, after experiencing what she describes as "the songs calling,” Pieta started experimenting with the banjo and eventually picked up a 1930's Maybell arch-top guitar during a visit to her father's place and never looked back. Emerging from a disjointed and distinctly 'bohemian' upbringing, Pieta began performing live and making independent recordings soon after teaching herself how to play guitar. "I grew up around a lot of musicians and artists living on the fringe, and have always felt most at home among them," Pieta says.Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta is being recognized as one of modern Americana's true gems. In recent years Pieta has released multiple highly critically acclaimed albums, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style, but also the power of her singing and songwriting, including fan favorite Paradise Outlaw (2014 Red House, which Bon Iver master mind, Justin Vernon, called his “favorite recording made at our studio.”) Pieta has toured North America with Mark Knopfler, and toured various regions of the U.S., Australia and Canada with John Prine, Amos Lee, Brandi Carlisle, JJ Cale, Ani Difranco, Mavis Staples, and Calexico among others. She has co-written songs with and made recent guest appearances on albums by Calexico, Amos Lee, and Iris Dement, whose latest masterpiece Workin' On A World (2023) Pieta co-produced. Pieta's songs and music have been heard in various TV Shows and indie films including Everything Will Be Fine (Wim Wenders). With the release of her most recent album Freeway (September 2019, Righteous Babe) co-produced by Bon Iver drummer, S. Carey, followed by multiple experimental collaborations since with various artists including JT Bates, S.Carey, and Howe Gelb & The Colorist Orchestra, as well as a new instrumental based side-project she calls Sylvee & The Sea, Pieta's music and artistry continue to rise.~ "...a style and a sensuality that's all her own...."- Pop Matters~ "Among the top tier of songwriters today..." - FAME (Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange)~ "...a gifted singer-songwriter whose lyrics are pieces of polished poetry" - Huffington PostPieta's WebsiteSRTN Website
From the cold grey light of dawn to some gospel coverage from Luther Dickinson, George Jones and The Golden Gate Quartet, Deeper Roots this week takes another pull at the thread of tapestry of the past century, once again celebrating America's music. We're in fine form, no doubt, because the players this week move from the ‘king of boogie', John Lee Hooker, to one of the great contemporary songwriters, Iris DeMent. We'll share a track from her latest album, one that ventures into the dark corners of this country's recent history with her brilliant eight minute soliloquy “Goin' Down To Sing In Texas”. We'll share songs about liars, feeling good, 99 year blues, and that last train to Memphis. Join Dave Stroud for two hours from America's songbooks, from church to steeple to songs about its people. We'll be coming to you live from the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa, California.

This week, we feature my conversation with beloved folk firebrand Iris Dement. Born the youngest of fourteen to a singing Pentecostal family in Arkansas and raised in California, Dement released her iconic 1992 John Prine-endorsed debut Infamous Angel and has been creating poetic protest records and warm collaborations ever since (garnering two folk Grammy nominations along the way), culminating in her much anticipated and fiery new LP Working On A World. Certain songwriters in the folk field will occasionally speak up about injustice or corruption - but with Working On A World, Dement puts the protest front and center: honoring luminaries like Mahalia Jackson, John Lewis, Martin Luther King Jr. and even The Chicks for giving her hope that putting your principles and life on the line will help bend history towards progress and righteousness. Dement, who is now based in Iowa with her musician and collaborator husband Greg Brown (check out their biting co-write “I'll Be Your Jesus”), will be the first to say that at times in her wide-ranging career, playing clubs to enraptured but small audiences, she has questioned whether she was doing enough to make a difference. But songs like the epic Dylan-esque take-down “Going Down To Sing in Texas” show that Dement is still at her fired-up best, confronting the Lone Star State's open carry gun laws that put so many at risk, while also spitting in the face of all the wannabe tyrants who shun the very progress she is still hoping to see. In many ways, Working On A World is a hard-won release of pent up energy, created over the course of six years with co-producers Richard Bennett, Jim Rooney and Pieta Brown. While many of her longtime fans are used to her fearless political confrontations - 1996's seething The Way I Should and its dark anthem “Wasteland of the Free" demand answers from sexual abusers and government war mongers alike - casual listeners may only know Dement from her playful duets with sonic soulmate John Prine, most notably the foul-mouthed love song “In Spite Of Ourselves.” With a little laugh, she says she's alright with that too. Life is long and the music, no matter the light or the dark, is equally as powerful. We knew that Over The Rhine's Nowhere Else Festival was going to be something special. We've heard about the meals, the music, the songs being sung under a big tent in their wide Ohio backyard. And yes, we grew up seeing Over The Rhine play show after breathtaking show under a similar tent at the Cornerstone Festival in West Central Illinois. We knew it would be great. But we were still not prepared for just how wonderful two days of understated, organic, family-style music could be. A steady drizzle of rain couldn't come close to dampening the spirits on that rural farm, and on this episode of the podcast, we do our best to take you there. One of the hallmarks of Nowhere Else is that Karin and Linford of Over The Rhine always assemble a treasure trove of talent to accompany them for their “musical family reunion.” This cast – often comprised of fellow Americana (and Americana-adjacent) artists they have met out on the road – play concerts, participate in writer rounds, and offer creative workshops and seminars. While some will usually be relatively familiar to fans of this kind of music – and at least one will have earned “legend” status – there will always be at least a few that are relative unknowns. Though she has been a regular at Nowhere Else in recent years, we were not familiar with soul / gospel / r&b artist and full-time “culture coach” Nikki Lerner until shortly before the festival. But after we attended her morning session, called “Finding Your Voice Through Improv,” we knew she needed to join us on the podcast. I'm sure you will find her just as brilliant, insightful, hilarious, and soulful as we have. And Bruce has loaded up the Jukebox with records from ALL of the artists on this year's Nowhere Else lineup. In addition to Nikki, you'll hear tunes from Iris Dement, Carrie Newcomer, Hayes Carll, The Winetree, Courtney Marie Andrews, Carolina Story, John Fullbright; Wille Tea Taylor, Ben Sollee, Vance Gilbert, and of course, Over the Rhine. If you would like to support the show, please consider joining our Patreon community or dropping us a one-time tip and check out our NEW MERCH! “Memories To Burn” The Williams Brothers come from a rich musical lineage that goes all the way back to the late ‘30s, when Williams Brothers Andy, Dick, Bob and Don started their singing quartet that took them all the way from their home state of Iowa to sunny Los Angeles, where they appeared in movies and were under contract with MGM Films. The second iteration of The Williams Brothers featured Don's sons Andrew and David, who put out two albums in 1973. As teen idols they had a hit with “What's Your Name" and even made an appearance on The Partridge Family. They resurfaced again in the late ‘80s, putting out a trio of fabulous albums for Warner Brothers, their last being 1993's Harmony Hotel. Along the way they backed up Brian Setzer, Joe Ely and The Cruzados, sang back up on the Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away" and were part of T-Bone Burnett's band for a tour of Europe. They had a hit with "Can't Cry Enough" in '92, appeared as an Everly Brothers duo in Alison Anders' Grace Of My Heart and after that…..well, after that, they stepped away and lived their lives. 28 years later we have Memories To Burn. This album gets done in 30 minutes what most bands try to do their entire careers. The harmonies are lustrous and elegant and the phrasing is delivered with finesse and grace. The two brothers' vocal interplay is effortless, organic and soul-affirming. Featuring covers by Robbie Fulks and Iris DeMent and with a band that features the marvelous Marvin Etzioni and Greg Liesz, Memories To Burn is one of 2022's very best. Good to have these guys back.
