For The New Yorker's series Takes, Carrie Brownstein—the co-creator of Sleater-Kinney and “Portlandia”—writes about an iconic rock-and-roll image. In the summer of 2003, the musician Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power, was transitioning from an indie darling to a major rock artist, and the staff writer Hilton Als wrote a Profile of her in The New Yorker. Facing his piece was a full-page portrait of Marshall by the celebrated photographer Richard Avedon that puts her in the lineage of rock rebels of generations past. With a long ash dangling from her cigarette, a Bob Dylan T-shirt, and her jeans half unzipped, Cat Power “maybe doesn't give a shit about being in The New Yorker,” Brownstein thinks, “which I can't say is usually the vibe.” Avedon's image reminds Brownstein “to keep remembering … to keep going back to that place that feels sacred and special and uncynical.” Carrie Brownstein's Take on Richard Avedon's portrait of Cat Power appeared in the April 20, 2025, issue. Plus, audiences have been bemoaning the death of the romantic comedy for years, but the genre persists—albeit often in a different form from the screwballs of the nineteen-forties or the “chick flicks” of the eighties and nineties. On this episode from the Critics at Large podcast, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss their all-time favorite rom-coms and two new projects marketed as contemporary successors to the greats: Celine Song's “Materialists” and Lena Dunham's “Too Much.”
Will and Nicholas discuss the latest releases by Subsonic Eye, L.Mayland, and Yo La Tengo, plus live reports, music news, a death of the week, and bonus songs.

This week we'll take some time away for a celebration of Americana sounds from every corner. It's a mixed bag of jazz, blues, country, rock, and everything in between in another of our free form eclectic romps here on Deeper Roots. Count on some wild swings and some quiet moments reserved for the corner booth in the show today. Aretha, Cat Power, Etta Jones and Gale Garnett are some of the female vocalists that we'll feature this morning. We'll also visit that ‘boulevard of broken dreams' with Esquivel, some lighter instrumentals from Ethel Smith and Herb Alpert; classic softer side Americana from Chris Isaak and Pokey LaFarge and the polar opposite from Creedence and BB King. What a way to blast on into 2025. Join Dave Stroud as he begins yet another year with the promise of doing the right thing...always.

Justin and I talk about the singles compared to the rest of the record, songs we like most and least, The National, Elon Musk in virgin whites, Cat Power, the Alex Orange Drink discourse, Bright Eyes and friendship, Mogis/Nate Walcott, Down in the Weeds, movie-dialogue motif, actually Scorsese is good and Frank Sinatra sucks, Phoebe Bridgers, Real Feel 105, Stevie Nicks singing “Silver Springs,” Conor Oberst live-show discourse, “Tin Soldier Boy” makes me want to run through a wall (positive), The Fader reporter showing Conor negative Reddit threads lol, a very titillating question about 311, and we predict the Pitchfork score. -- Subscribe on Patreon and I'll mail you a zine: https://www.patreon.com/afterthedeluge Here's Justin Corwin's YouTube channel, The Deep Dive: https://www.youtube.com/@THEDEEPDIVE --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/support
Nik Ewing is a visual artist, a bass player, keyboardist and founding member of LA based band Local Natives. His second LP, ‘Songs For Linnéa, a collection of piano songs written for his first child, is available now under his solo moniker Chewing. Nik share's his experience of growing up in a musical household in San Diego, his first bands influences and how that has extended to the Local Natives songwriting. We learn why he wanted the listener to feel “in the room” on Songs For Linnéa what he did to make it a documentation of his child's early years. Joe and Nick discuss their approaches to cover songs and how Cat Power inspired Nik's approach to covering a Beetles song on the new record. Nik tells us why he sometimes puts out music anonymously and we hear a couple tunes. Chewing Local Natives
This week on the show, we're pleased to present a conversation with Matt Sweeney. He's lived a truly dazzling life in music. After coming up playing with the great band Chavez, he contributed to masterworks of indie rock—including records by Cat Power and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with whom he crafted the monumental 2005 classic Superwolf, a classic in the Aquarium Drunkard canon. He's also worked as an in-demand session player, working on recordings for the likes of Cat Stevens, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and other legends. Is Matt the only guy to play on both a Current 93 and Dixie Chicks project? We suspect so. His new band is called The Hard Quartet, which finds him joined by Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and The Jicks, Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang, and Jim White of The Dirty Three. Their self-titled debut is out this Friday, October 4th. To quote from Jennifer Kelly's Aquarium Drunkard review of their self-titled album: “The term ‘supergroup' gets thrown around a lot, and it often means nothing more than ‘these people have all been in other bands.' But the Hard Quartet is a true super group, composed of four guys who have made their mark in music.” Sweeney's a great conversationalist, and this talk gets into the new record, the philosophy of bass playing, the band's Monkees-like identity, the return of his web series Guitar Moves and much more. After releasing a pair of early albums, he got married, and became a father, and while he eventually returned to the business he'd founded, he remained as dedicated as ever to his craft. In 2014, he recorded his third album, Two Truths and a Lie, which introduced him to Avatar Studios (a New York landmark previously known as The Power Station, where icons like Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, David Bowie and Bob Dylan had recorded). Upon learning the studio was under threat of being sold, Pete Muller decided to use his resources in partnership with the City of New York and the Berklee College of Music to save, renovate, and re-launch the space as a world-class recording and educational facility. He would go on to record his next two albums—2019's Dissolve and 2022's Spaces—there, launching a whole new chapter of his career that would find him sharing bills with artists like Joan Osborne, Jimmy Webb, Livingston Tayler, and Paul Thorn in addition to landing festival slots everywhere from Telluride to Montreux. His newest album More Time, Pete Muller has harnessed this passion and infused it into his most striking and bold set of songs to date and the focus of our discussion today. Ladies and gentlemen, Pete Muller's newest album More Time was recorded in Memphis with producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang, the collaboration with Muller is apparent across the entire record. Together they crafted a collection of a looser, grittier slice of rock and soul without sacrificing the open-hearted, expansive nature of Pete's songwriting. No less prominent is the all-star band assembled for the sessions, including celebrated bassist Dave Smith (Al Green, Wilson Pickett), famed Texas guitarist Will Sexton (Joe Ely, Roky Erickson), Memphis organist Rick Steff (Lucero, Cat Power), longtime Wilco drummer Ken Coomer, and a host of local legend horn players and background vocalists. Pete Muller's album More Time is exactly what it gives the listener. More time to enjoy the authentic vocals and sounds that come from real musicians bringing sheet music to life. His collections of songs has something for everyone. If you rock, soul, blues, jazz, easy listening, then your ears will be filled with joy and put a smile on your face. As they ready their 10th full-length album Five Dice, All Threes for release on Sep. 20, Bright Eyes returns with their signature laser-focused lyrics on the early single “Bells and Whistles.” We’re looking forward to hearing the album’s guest performances from long-time friends Cat Power and The National’s Matt Berninger, but are happy to wait it out with this rollicking track which cruises from NY to LA, gnawing at Banksy, the Mets, music biz pitfalls, and arguably Kevin Costner’s greatest film. Do you dare to give it a whirl?

Crouching Pillow, Hidden Fridge! This week we kneel and pray to the interior design power couple Syd and Shea McGee as we discuss their marital memoir, "Make Life Beautiful." No teaching of John is left untouched while we talk about falling in love at BYU, their hit Netflix show "Dream Home Makeover," marrying a gay guy, the anti-dining-room revolution, Cat Power, inventing “the drop zone,” Shea's bracelet business, and deciding Mormonism is actually the most indie religion of them all. There are heavy hitters, and then there's The Dirty Three. A trio comprising violinist Warren Ellis, guitarist Mick Turner, and drummer Jim White, these Australian independent rock legends recently returned with their first album in 12 year, the aptly titled Love Changes Everything. Though they are perhaps best known for their work with artists like Nick Cave (Warren is a foundational Bad Seeds member and works with Cave in a variety of other contexts), Cat Power, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Bill Callahan, and Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett, a very particular magic happens when they gather together. It's on full display on the new record, which does everything you hope a D3 record will: it rocks, it drifts, and it ventures boldly toward the unknown. That magic comes down to...well, as you'll learn in this episode, it's very tricky to pin down where magic—or love for that matter—comes from, and it only grows more elusive the more you try to name it. This week on Transmissions, The Dirty Three explore their history, reflect on the life and work of Steve Albini, and recall their days opening for The Beastie Boys. Today's episode begins with Steven confronting Ian over a difficult subject: The big plate of donuts that Ian stole from Steven at his book event in Los Angeles last week (0:25). Will the guys be able to get past this? Yes, they will. But not before some serious donut shaming! After resolving the donut issue, they briefly discuss Steven's plans to see the Pixies, Modest Mouse, and Cat Power on the same bill, and the Pixies' weird status post-reunion in the 21st century (8:59).After that, they finally get down to the task of handing out their mid-year Indiecasties (16:41). Categories include: Most Valuable Album Cycle (18:13), Most Memory-Holed Album (25:19), Most Annoying Music Writer Story (32:53), Most Fun Music Writer Story (39:58), and Most Overrated Album (47:02). Remember: Everybody is a winner at the Indiecasties. It's an honor just to be nominated! In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the new album from Annabel while Steven raves about the latest from This Is Lorelei (53:29).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Italian Drummer, Sound Explorer, music maker Piero Perelli is a musical maverick whose skills stretch from free improvisation to film scores, to performances with international artists and musicians, both live and in the studio. His original style is grounded in his journey as a musical explorer, touring around places like the United States, Europe, Africa and India. Engaged both in the service of songs and in experimentation, Perelli maintains the creative center of his activity in the Tuscan countryside, where he has also created his own personal laboratory-studio, the SoundSet Studio. As a drummer and percussionist, Piero has recorded with artists like Eddie Vedder, Glen Hansard, Cat Power as well as producers like Robin Hannibal (Kendrick Lamar, Little Dragon), Vinicio Capossela, Paul Savoy (A-Ha) Simone Giuliani (Andrea Bocelli, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Rodrigo DʼErasmo, Edoardo Bennato, Roberto Dell'Era, Niki La Rosa, Effenberg, Andrea Biagioni and many others, Piero has also recorded a library of their specific sounds and grooves and loops for the American That Sound made available to producers from all over the world. He has recently been touring with Glen Hansard and The Swell Season as well as the well respected Italian singer/songwriter Vinicio Capossela. His first solo album, Notte is a piece of work where Piero expresses his most intimate and experimental soul. In this episode, Piero talks about: Working and touring with The Swell Season and Glen Hansard His journey of learning music and drums in a small town in Italy Absorbing regional music throughout the world while touring Recording his solo record “Notte” Reacting to the acoustics in the space where you're performing Recording on a movie sound track with Eddie Vedder, Cat Power and Glen Hansard Italian drummers that have inspired him The influence of Tony Allen (father of afro-beat drumming)
With 20 albums under his own name and his instrumental group Cosmo, the man knows how to make a record. He is a wildly accomplished and successful songwriter. For example in 2003 Harris he received the Grammy Award for Song Of The Year for Norah Jones' breakout hit “Don't Know Why,” from her debut album, Come Away With Me, which has sold almost 30 million copies worldwide. Versions of his songs have been sung by artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Cat Power, Feist, The Black Keys, M. Ward, Brad Mehldau, Bright Eyes, Smokey Robinson, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Kandace Springs, and Solomon Burke. I mean WHAT a list that is! Songwriting collaborations have included Maya Hawke, John Zorn, Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Papooz, and Lana Del Rey. If you didnt think you knew Jesse, I bet you've heard his writing out there in the known universe of sound and by gosh he's a real potent force. Even after all this success, he is very mild mannered and thoughtful in this nice rambling interview. He's generous with his knowledge and a very easy guy to get along with. I must say I hang my pod head slightly when reflecting on how old this interview is. Like a fine wine, I hope it's benefited from a little time in the digital cellar. Drink in the wisdoms y'all !
