A Grammy-winning songwriter, singer, guitarist and producer, who is performing in Paris this weekend, has spoken to FRANCE 24 about how he's always trying to make his records better. New York-born Jesse Harris has been working with top stars such as Norah Jones, Melody Gardot, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson and Cat Power. His new album is called "If You Believed in Me" and has enabled him to work for the first time with a full orchestra. His performances are taking place this weekend at the Duc des Lombards venue. He spoke to us in Perspective.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the debut Bat for Lashes album, Fur and Gold, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Natasha Khan had grown up in Hertfordshire, England and studied art at the University of Brighton. After graduating, she taught as a schoolteacher while writing songs and performing as Bat for Lashes. Her manager, Dick O'Dell, got her a publishing deal and connected her with producer David Kosten to work on some demos. The first Bat for Lashes single, “The Wizard” was released on her own label in early 2006. After signing with Echo, Natasha and David began working on a full-length album together at Jacobs studio in the Surrey countryside. They brought in other musicians, including Abi Fry and Caroline Weeks, who had been playing as a group with Natasha at this time. Fur and Gold was eventually released in 2006. In this episode, Natasha Khan and David Kosten have an in-depth conversation where they revisit their initial collaboration that continued long after this record. David shares how he was first asked to co-write with Natasha until he realized she had no interest in co-writing and already had a fully formed vision for this album. Natasha describes wanting to create the world of the album and use unconventional recording techniques, such as recording in a forest and under blankets, to try to achieve the sound she had imagined. Even though Natasha had a fondness for lo-fi MIDI sounds, she worked with David to craft a unique hybrid of well-recorded acoustic instruments with lower quality digital components. The result was the Mercury Prize-nominated Fur and Gold, which launched Natasha's music into the world. From a cinematic approach of method acting and practical effects, to a shared love of girl groups, to David finding a CD-R meant for another producer, to a memorable tour with Devendra Banhart, to taking inspiration from contemporaries Cat Power, Joanna Newsom and Gwen Stefani, to being averse to anything trip-hop, to having high standards and holding the vision, we'll hear the stories around how the album came together.

Titres interprétés au grand studio : Rebecca Live RFI Il n'est vraiment pas pratique à attacher ce siège bébé. Par respect du public, tout terme grossier a été retiré. Mais putain, elle en a dit des gros mots Rebecca. Parce que c'est à Rebecca qu'on s'attache maintenant. Elle est une jeune maman, seule, qui s'agrippe à la vie comme à son fils. Elle s'agrippe parce que tout semble fuir autour d'elle, surtout les bonhommes. Son Papa est passé d'Haïti à Tahiti en passant par Paris, un aventurier, un cavaleur, un connard qu'elle n'a pas vraiment connu. Ahhh, ça démarre mal… Elle a cru une fois en l'amour qui ne l'a pas reconnue et depuis, elle élève seule son fils. Ahhh, ça démarre mal… Elle enchaîne les débrouilles, les boulots, une fois elle a signé un contrat en dur, un vrai, un CDI, Centre de Documentation et d'Information je crois… mais très vite, le boss s'est paraît-il barré avec la caisse. Ahhh, ça démarre mal…. Alors il faut bien vivre. Rebecca enchaîne les boulots précaires et s'est montée un petit trafic. Mais elle, elle touche pas à ces machins de drogues dures, c'est une limite. C'est malhonnête et ça fait mal au nez. Elle n'en est certes pas fière mais vous pouvez la juger, rien n'y fera. Rebecca est dure, comme sa vie. Il est vingt heures et trente, elle installe son fils, son sang, sa vie, à l'arrière de la voiture et part pour sa petite tournée. Ahhh… ça démarre pas…. Bintou Live RFI Bintou est complètement lessivée. Il est vingt heures et trente et elle se met péniblement au lit. Elle a mal partout et la nausée ce soir reprend de plus belle. Le doc lui avait bien dit que ça allait être pénible, qu'il allait falloir s'accrocher et que le moral jouait beaucoup dans sa guérison. Elle sait que ça va être long mais Bintou n'a pas l'intention de se laisser faire. Trente-cinq ans c'est beaucoup trop jeune. Après la stupeur et la désolation à l'annonce de la mauvaise nouvelle, elle suit à présent le protocole médical rigoureusement. Avant d'éteindre la lumière, elle regarde comme tous soirs le dessin d'une de ses nièces qu'elle a accroché au mur où il est écrit : « Tata Bintou t'es la plus forte, j'ai hâte de te revoir cet été. Je pense à toi tous les jours. Gros gros bisous. Hawa ». Elle a dû lire ce mot des centaines de fois depuis le début du traitement. Comme un mantra. Et heureusement qu'elle est bien entourée Bintou. Elle a au moins cette chance. Elle en a pris de la force. Elle en reçoit de l'amour. Après cinq mois de baston, elle s'est fait à l'idée de se transformer en amazone… et quitte à en devenir une, elle sera une amazone avec grave de style…  Dylan Live RFI Le problème avec Dylan, c'est que ça s'écrit comme ça se prononce mais pas toujours… Entendons-nous bien ! Ça s'écrit comme ça devrait se prononcer mais parfois ça dérape. Et au vu, enfin à l'écoute, du conditionnel qui vient de passer, vous avez deviné, lui c'est Djylan. Ça se fait beaucoup dans le nord où il a grandi. Ça donne un petit peu de peps au prénom et qui sommes-nous pour juger ! Il est vingt heures et trente et Djylan, il est parti fumer, un peu en cachette, c'est plus chouette. Il y a un étang pas loin. Djylan il est pas très vieux, il a pas fait sa majorité, il a plus trop de boutons et puis ça l'inquiète pas. Ce qui l'inquiète, c'est autre chose, c'est le monde et ce qu'il s'agirait d'en faire. Mais trop souvent, il s'agit de ce qu'on lui dit, hurle, impose qu'il s'agirait d'en faire. Lui, il voudrait avoir dans les mains un avenir malléable et doux (hop, je le mets comme ça, c'est joli) mais les autres ont sorti les moules et ils sont durs. On lui invente des devoirs et des interdictions. On lui réclame de l'ambition. Mais pour Djylan, l'ambition c'est jamais que du rêve abîmé et lui en rêves, il est plutôt pas mal. Alors des fois, sa tête pourrait exploser. Il crie, un peu, non, fort ! Un coup à shooter dans des rats musqués… mais c'est risqué ! Line Up : Marc Nammour (rap) & Loïc Lantoine (rap). De son parcours transatlantique, elle garde une passion pour la scène folk et country américaine, qu'elle mêle à une écriture sensible et habitée. Après un premier EP avec son groupe October Baby (The End, paru en juin 2024) et un album remarqué, Nowhere at All, sorti en novembre de la même année, la chanteuse revient aujourd'hui avec son premier album solo, Long Long Gone. Ses morceaux, au climat très cinématographique, invitent à pénétrer son univers. Élevée dans un environnement artistique, Barbara a grandi bercée par les disques de ses parents : Bob Dylan, Sixto Rodriguez et Tom Waits du côté de son père ; Barry White, Al Green ou Simple Minds du côté de sa mère. Très tôt, elle forge son propre panthéon musical, allant de Nick Drake à Cat Power, de Feist à Big Thief.  Chaque titre de Long Long Gone a été capté en une seule prise, pour préserver la vérité de l'instant. Elle soigne aussi l'aspect visuel de son univers, créant elle-même ses visuels à partir de dessins, photographies et collages graphiques. Enregistré en juin 2025 à Paris avec son ami ingénieur du son Léo Aubry, Long Long Gone se présente comme un disque acoustique, brut et vulnérable. Barbara y aborde l'amitié, l'amour, la famille, mais aussi la beauté fragile et la mélancolie du monde. Ce mercredi 12 novembre, Marjorie Hache a orchestré deux heures de classiques intemporels et de nouveautés affûtées. La soirée a démarré avec Tame Impala et "Dracula", avant un clin d'œil à la scène new wave londonienne avec "Fade to Grey" de Visage. L'émission a ensuite rendu hommage à Neil Young pour son anniversaire avec "Old Man", extrait de son mythique "Harvest". L'album de la semaine, "Cosplay" du groupe londonien Sorry, s'est poursuivi avec "Jetplane", satire pop acide et inventive, avant un hommage musclé à Motörhead avec "Ace of Spades", avant une reprise intense de "Satisfaction" des Rolling Stones réinterprété par Cat Power. Les découvertes se sont enchaînées avec Die Spitz, jeune groupe texan attendu au Hellfest, le duo explosif Aerosmith & Yungblud sur "My Only Angel", et les Mancuniens de The Charlatans avec "Deeper Deeper". Marjorie Hache a aussi mis en avant les Parisiens de Ditter, avec leur titre "Cringe Is The New Sexy". Pour conclure, une touche de nostalgie avec les Kinks, Jesus Lizard, Red Hot Chili Peppers et une reprise folk de "Ghost Town" des Specials par Lankum. For The New Yorker's series Takes, Carrie Brownstein—the co-creator of Sleater-Kinney and “Portlandia”—writes about an iconic rock-and-roll image. In the summer of 2003, the musician Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power, was transitioning from an indie darling to a major rock artist, and the staff writer Hilton Als wrote a Profile of her in The New Yorker. Facing his piece was a full-page portrait of Marshall by the celebrated photographer Richard Avedon that puts her in the lineage of rock rebels of generations past. With a long ash dangling from her cigarette, a Bob Dylan T-shirt, and her jeans half unzipped, Cat Power “maybe doesn't give a shit about being in The New Yorker,” Brownstein thinks, “which I can't say is usually the vibe.” Avedon's image reminds Brownstein “to keep remembering … to keep going back to that place that feels sacred and special and uncynical.” Carrie Brownstein's Take on Richard Avedon's portrait of Cat Power appeared in the April 20, 2025, issue. Plus, audiences have been bemoaning the death of the romantic comedy for years, but the genre persists—albeit often in a different form from the screwballs of the nineteen-forties or the “chick flicks” of the eighties and nineties. Nik Ewing is a visual artist, a bass player, keyboardist and founding member of LA based band Local Natives. His second LP, ‘Songs For Linnéa, a collection of piano songs written for his first child, is available now under his solo moniker Chewing.  Nik share's his experience of growing up in a musical household in San Diego, his first bands influences and how that has extended to the Local Natives songwriting.  We learn why he wanted the listener to feel “in the room” on Songs For Linnéa  what he did to make it a documentation of his child's early years. Joe and Nick discuss their approaches to cover songs and how Cat Power inspired Nik's approach to covering a Beetles song on the new record. Nik tells us why he sometimes puts out music anonymously and we hear a couple tunes. This week on the show, we're pleased to present a conversation with Matt Sweeney. He's lived a truly dazzling life in music. After coming up playing with the great band Chavez, he contributed to masterworks of indie rock—including records by Cat Power and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with whom he crafted the monumental 2005 classic Superwolf, a classic in the Aquarium Drunkard canon. He's also worked as an in-demand session player, working on recordings for the likes of Cat Stevens, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and other legends. Is Matt the only guy to play on both a Current 93 and Dixie Chicks project? We suspect so. His new band is called The Hard Quartet, which finds him joined by Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and The Jicks, Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang, and Jim White of The Dirty Three.  Their self-titled debut is out this Friday, October 4th.
