It's Christmas Eve! Bob bless us everyone. We will let you pick into your stockings early and give you a holiday themed 6-Pack featuring hour long stop-motion TV specials by those seasonal legends Arthur Rankin & Jules Bass. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And nothing says Christmas like classic TV holiday specials! Over the next two weeks, we'll be toasting and roasting two of the most famous from the duo of Rankin and Bass. Which of them belongs on the Nice List and which one deserves a shiny lump of coal in its stocking. This is Legends of Christmas! Airing fifty years ago this month, based on the book by Phyllis McGinley, this Rankin and Bass special deals with every child's worst nightmare: Christmas has been canceled! After centuries of delivering presents to every child on Earth, Santa Claus is suffering from exhaustion and decides to take the year off. That means it's up to Mrs. Claus to figure out a way to save Christmas, with the help of some elves. We also meet the Miser Brothers, Heat Miser and Snow Miser, who cause trouble for Mrs. Claus as she seeks to wake Santa from his stupor. Featuring the voices of Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn and George S. Irving, the special received a live-action remake in 2006 and an animated sequel, A Miser Brothers' Christmas, in 2008. But is The Year Without a Santa Claus better left forgotten, or will it make our list (and check it twice) of holiday classics?   Include a voicemail for our Year-End Special here: https://forms.gle/EZyMNM8mpiu5sRPDA    For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Did you ever watch Frosty, the Grinch or Heat Miser and think "I'd do him"? Well, then Netflix—and the Kevin and Ces Annual Holiday Movie Quadruple Feature Podcast—bring you the perfect tepid mug of cocoa with this year's streaming smash, "Hot Frosty." Yes, when a young widow places a used scarf on a six-pack snowman, the sexy Faulknerian man-child of her dreams comes to life. Throw in seasonal shenanigans, holiday hi-jinks, part of the cast of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," and inadvertent simulated sex with—not in—a car, and you have the makings of a Christmas classic your family can listen to Kevin and Ces talk about year after year (but mostly this one). Here's hoping you all find your own Frosty this season. Enjoy!

What's up, dudes? I've got Anthony Caruso from ‘Tis the Podcast and Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas with me to talk the greatness that is “The Year Without a Santa Claus” from Rankin Bass! Released in ‘74, it aired all throughout the ‘80s!When Santa Claus wakes up with a mysterious magical illness that affects immortal beings, he decides to summon the elf doctor. This quack immediately tells Santa that kids don't care about him, causing him to skip Christmas. Mrs. Claus sends elves Jingle and Jangle to Southtown, USA to gauge the local children's belief in Santa. Unfortunately for them, a dog catcher nabs the reindeer Vixen who accompanied them. They approach the mayor to release Vixen, but he will only acquiesce if they can make it snow. Thus they take Mrs Claus with them to see the Miser Brothers who rule over the heat and cold.Meanwhile, Santa goes to rescue Vixen and discovers kids still believe in him. He returns to the North Pole while Mrs. C and the elves visit Heat Miser and Snow Miser. When they refuse to cooperate, the trio ask another Nature to intervene. The snow in Southtown prompts the mayor to declare a holiday for Santa, and the children of the world write to him and send him presents. Moved by their love and generosity, Santa makes his Christmas Eve ride.Reindeer with socks covering her ears? Yep. Children from the It's a Small World ride? For sure. Personifications of summer and winter? Only if they're petty sibling rivals! So put on your Santa suit, hop on your reindeer, and fly to negotiate with minor deities with this episode all about “The Year Without a Santa Claus!”‘Tis the PodcastFB: @tisthepodcastTwitter: @tisthepodIG: @tisthepodcast Lost Christmas PodcastFB: @LostChristmasPodcastTwitter: @LostChristmasP1IG: @lostchristmaspodcast Give us a buzz! Picture a Christmas where jingle bells don't ring and Santa's sleigh remains parked in the North Pole. That's the curious premise of the 1974 classic, "The Year Without a Santa Claus," which my brother Tyler and I explore in our latest podcast episode. Join us as we stroll down memory lane, revisiting the whimsical world of Rankin/Bass animations where Mrs. Claus takes center stage and the Miser Brothers' sibling rivalry heats up the holidays. We'll share how voice actors from yesteryears lent their unique flair to these enduring characters, and you'll discover the surprising ways these festive figures have mirrored their real-life counterparts. As the sleigh bells continue to echo, we unwrap the tale of Iggy's quest and the heart-tugging tune "I Believe in Santa Claus" that reminds us of the magic nested in belief. We also chuckle over the less-than-sanitary barbershop antics and marvel at how a cameo by Charlie Chaplin sneaks into this holiday tapestry. The Miser Brothers steal the show with their iconic songs, adding a dash of mischief to the Christmas cheer. And if you ever wondered how Batman ties into all this, we've got a story that'll sprinkle a little extra joy into your listening experience. Our festive journey culminates with musings on how a single heartfelt letter can rekindle the Christmas spirit across the globe. We chat about how the Rankin/Bass specials have shaped our own holiday traditions and speculate on the mysteries of Santa's many on-screen personas. So, pour yourself a mug of hot cocoa and cozy up for a holiday podcast episode that's more stuffed with joy and nostalgia than a Christmas stocking. It was a vital part of Portland's early 90s punk scene. It was also the launching point for Smith's prolific and influential solo career until his death in 2003. The band recently released a compilation record of early recordings called The Music of Heatmiser. KEXP's Dusty Henry spoke with the rest of the band's original lineup to learn more about the early days of the group and what they took away from revisiting this old material.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Music of Heatmiser affords the titular band an occasion to step outside their own large shadow. It's an opportunity to judge the group on its own merit, beyond simply serving as a launchpad for its most famous member. College friends Neil Gust and Elliott Smith serve as the songwriting forces behind the Portland act, whose unreleased recordings appear on the new Third Man record. After Heatmister's rise and quick dissolution, Gust founded No. 2. More recently, he made a second career as a video editor in New York, only to feel music's pull once again. The musician joins us to discuss Heatmiser and his subsequent journey. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Corey was living in Portland, OR and running in the same circles as Smith during his rise as a member of the Portland rock band Heatmiser to Oscar-nominated indie solo artist. The slowcore sound can be simplified down to tempo and a minimalist approach, but like every genre or subgenre of rock music, there are always those pushing the boundaries and reinventing. On the 1996 album Three Sheets To The Wind by Idaho, the boundary pushing comes as a pair of straight-up rock songs that wouldn't sound out place on a Dinosaur Jr. or Heatmiser album. From there, the band adds jazzy and soulful elements - brushed drums here, an electric piano there - paired with Jeff Martin's evocative vocal that falls somewhere between the folky sadcore of American Music Club's Mark Eitzel and the more experimental post-rock of Low's Alan Sparhawk.   Songs In This Episode Intro - If You Dare 18:18 - A Sound Awake 23:03 - Shame 30:08 - Alive Again 34:00 - Pomegranate Bleeding Outro - Catapult   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Book Vs. Movie: The Year Without a Santa ClausThe Rankin/Bass 1974 Classic Special Based on a Light Verse Book For many 70s kids, the Rankin/Bass specials with their catchy music and stop motion animation, were high art. From Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to Santa Claus is Coming to Town, their specials garnered big ratings and helped popularize holiday music. One of their most iconic specials was based on a 1956 Phillis McGinley book, The Year Without a Santa Clause which told the story of a burnt-out Kris Kringle who wanted to take leave for one Christmas. McGinley (1905-1978) was a master of the “light verse” and used humor to describe everyday life. Throughout her writing career (as a poet and children's author) she loved to talk about humility and living a simple, suburban life. She was not aligned with Sylvia Plath or Betty Friedan who questioned the purpose of being a woman in the 20th Century. McGinley was a lonely child who married at 32 (late for the time) and lived a Mad Men kind of life in Larchmont, NY. The Year Without a Santa Claus was first printed in Good Housekeeping magazine and was later published as a book. Boris Karloff recorded a version for Capitol Records shortly before his death in 1969. In the story, Santa has a bad cold just before the holidays and feels like he is no longer important to kids. When the world's children learn this, they gladly send him their toys to finally give him the Christmas of his dreams. Knowing he is loved sends him back to his old Santa ways. The TV special adds elves Jingle & Jangle, who, along with reindeer Vixen, look for children who still care about Santa. They are shot down (!) by competing Snow & Heat Misers who want to control the weather. In the southern part of the United States, they get into all kinds of trouble with some incredibly catchy tunes and performances by Shirley Booth, Mickey Rooney, and Dick Shawn. Does the spirit of Christmas win out? Duh! So, which did we prefer between the original story and the classic TV special? In this ep the Margos discuss:The incredible career of Phyllis McGinleyThe holiday specials of the 1960s and 1970sStop-motion used a form of animation.  Starring: Shirley Booth (Mrs. Claus,) Mickey Rooney (Santa Claus,) Dick Shawn (Snow Miser), and George S. As Chambers so enthusiastically always says, “education rocks!”  Along the way, Chambers' rock n' roll journey always kept moving. As a solo artist, and previously with his band Half-Hour Late, he released numerous albums and singles. His most successful song to date, has been his cover of "Snow Miser vs. Heat Miser" from his first album, ‘Santa's Rockin' Band,' which was released soon after his first university graduation in the days before Spotify and on-line music sales and streaming. Once iTunes hit, and later Spotify, “Snow Miser vs. Heat Miser” began to really resonate with people and rise in popularity. It has since been downloaded over 18,000 times in the last ten years and streamed approximately 900,000 times in the past three. The song became the cornerstone of his 2020 ‘Santa's Rockin' Band' album reboot, which also included a newly penned original, “It's Christmas Time (All Over the World),” which went on to attain over 250,000 streams on Spotify alone in the last two months of 2020.  Following on the heels of his successful 2020 Christmas album, Chambers has been consistently and methodically releasing new original music throughout 2021 and into 2022. His socially conscious rocker, “I'm So Tired,” came out in January, accompanied by a hard-hitting video brimming with thought provoking social commentary (the video continues to receive accolades from film festivals around the globe). This was followed in the spring with his mid-tempo, love gone wrong, “Sorry Isn't Good Enough.” His summertime release was “Summer Looks So Good On You,” a Beach Boys meets Katrina and the Waves fun and sing-alongable offering, which was followed by his fall release, “High School Can't Last Forever,” a rocker that merges the sounds of Buddy Holly and Green Day to explore the notion of what really constitutes youth and innocence, and he completed the year with his release, “I Wonder,” an infectious, almost bubble gum pop/rock song that Chambers likes to simply call a “musical guilty pleasure.” His first release of 2022 was his cover of the Beatles' “I Saw Her Standing There, ” which he has now followed up with  “You're a Nice Guy But…,” a song that has fun with every cheezie break-up line delivered to us by a boyfriend or girlfriend trying to let us down easy. aka dump us!  With bombastic guitars and a vocal style that oozes rock n' roll. Rich Chambers is giving us something that rock n' roll has not seen in quite some time—energy and fun. Rich Chambers - Songwriter/Producer/Musician/Singer Does anyone still use the term "rock n' roll" anymore? Rich Chambers certainly does. In fact, he specializes in it, bringing us all the fun, excitement, and energy from the early days of rock n' roll in a uniquely fresh way built specifically for the 2020s.  Starting with the 2019 release of his Christmas album, “Santa's Rockin' Band,” Rich has been on a roll. His Christmas album produced one single, “the Snow Miser vs. Heat Miser,” which has been streamed more than one million times on Spotify to date. Following this has been six single releases beginning in January 2021, including his film festival award-winning video for his rock original, "I'm So Tired,” which has received accolades in over 50 film festivals across the globe for its hard-hitting social commentary. His most recent release is his guitar-driven version of the Beatles, “I Saw Her Standing There,” which debuted in March 2022 to high critical acclaim.  Rich's music videos have received a combined total of well over 500,000 views, and his Spotify streaming is clocking in at approximately 25,000 listeners a month and growing. With more single and album releases planned for 2022, Chambers is making his mark as a rock n' roll artist to watch for. As one music journalist recently said in the FLEX music blog about Chambers, who hails from Langley, British Columbia: "One of Canada's best-kept secrets, Rich Chambers could easily become a household name in a matter of months!" With bombastic guitars and a vocal style that oozes rock n' roll. Rich Chambers is giving us something that rock n' roll has not seen in quite some time—energy and fun. In fact, he specializes in it bringing us all the fun excitement and energy from the early days of rock and roll in a uniquely fresh way built specifically for today, which is a songwriter, producer, musician and singer, whose music videos have received well over half a million views and his Spotify at approximately 25,000 listeners a month and growing with more single and album releases planned for 2022 chambers is making his mark as a rock and roll artist to watch for. Welcome Rich!  Rich Hey! Thanks for that. That's a cool introduction. I like that. Thank you. Marlana   What makes your story a bit unique is that you're actually circling back around to a passion that you couldn't let go of. So, talk to us a little bit about that. Rich Correct. I mean, I'm a middle-aged rocker. And it's like most musicians, I've been doing this since I was a little kid, I picked up the guitar at 10 and started writing songs of fourteen. And that's where I got absolutely hooked, songwriting was what did it for me. If it weren't for songwriting, I would just be a hobbyist guitar player and singer, but you put songwriting in the mix, and I went nuts with it. And that's been one of my huge passions is but like many, you know, life journeys, things happen. And when I got out of high school, I was going to be the next rock star. A few cheesy days later, and about a year into that I realize, oh, this is going nowhere. I didn't want the smartest things I could have ever done when I went back to school. And then I pursued went further on as a kid very barely passed high school, I finished a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in it for a while was actually toying with PhD work. And it's pretty good considering I barely...

Today's guest was into music earlier than most. Neil Gust had an obsession with vinyl as a toddler; he would walk around the house with records in his hands. His obsession stayed with him through college where he met Elliot Smith and started playing in bands with him. After graduating, the duo decided they would continue playing together and decided Portland Oregon was the place to go. That's where Neil & Elliot formed the band Heatmiser. After their third album, Elliot's solo work began getting a lot of traction and the band dissolved. Neil decided to continue on with a new band which was accidentally given the moniker No. 2. Unfortunately, the band never really got the label support it deserved. And as the second album was released and things were getting harder, not easier, Neil put down music and began a new career in video editing. That took him to NYC where he found great success creating videos for Jaguar automobiles. But one night, playing Skyrim, Neil had an epiphany and No. 2 was reborn. It was picking up steam when COVID stalled everything. But Neil soldiered on in a Connecticut boathouse. So check out the new album by No. 2 called First Love.
