Devoted to Prayer | There is Life Here | Jackson de Jong
The Apostle Paul has been leading us through a grand celebration of the Gospel: in Christ, by grace and through faith, we have been reconciled with God and with one another. We are alive as God's sons and daughters. We are unified as God's family, Jews and Gentiles together in this multi-ethnic family of God. All of this is—as Paul puts it in Ephesians 3:11-12—through “Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.” And now, having celebrated our bold, confident, access to God through Christ, Paul decides to show us the way as he launches into one of the most powerful prayers recorded in all the Bible. In this sermon, we look at three key points about the power of prayer. 1) The Basis of Prayer: There are two images at the start of the prayer. First, “I bow my knees” is throne room imagery. Second, what's interesting is Paul says we are bowing before the Father, which is family imagery. This imagery reiterates that now, in Jesus, the blessings of God's promise to all the nations has come true: God brings salvation to Jews and Gentiles together as one new family by grace through faith in Christ. Our Father loves His multi-ethnic family. So come to Him like you're wanted, because you are! 2) The Grace of Prayer: In the middle of the prayer, Paul articulates three prayer requests drawing on the imagery of hospitality, botany, and maturation. The Father, the Son, and the Spirit are cultivating their abiding life in us. God gives us Himself, to make us like Himself, so he can give us even more of Himself, so we become just like Him! 3) The Confidence of Prayer: How do we know we're not just wasting our breath? How can we have confidence in our prayers? Our triune God is our hope, now and forever. The Father's grace. The Spirit's power. The Son's love. Our God is doing it all, to the praise of His glory! Takeaway: Pray like your life depends on it—because it does! Prayer is our lifeline to God and our abundant life in Him. Only the Father, Son, and Spirit can take us, this multi-ethnic family, and cultivate their abiding life in us so that we become glorious children of God. Ephesians 3:14-21

Join Pastor Ray Kloetstra for this week's teaching from our series on Revelation. This teaching is titled The Mystery of God - The Big Picture and is focused on Revelation 11. The Big Picture Of The Mystery Of God Can Be Summed Up In Three Stages: •A period of Testimony of undetermined length to witness to the Gospel – the victory of Jesus •A very short, intense period of Tribulation that will see the reign and ruin of the Beast and end in the vindication of Christ, his witnesses, and their message •God's ultimate Triumph demonstrated by His undisputed reign, judgment of sinners, rewarding of the saints, and the destruction of His and our spiritual foes. Applications: •Your worship, prayers, and witness are important “weapons” for the extension of Christ's reign and ultimate victory! •The “powers of hell” ultimately cannot harm you; you will be vindicated and glorified when Christ returns and you are raised from the dead! •Meditate on the Lord's Prayer – There is no greater prayer for the advance of the Gospel, in the present, and the victory of Christ's Kingdom, at the end! •Pray: “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Rev. 22:21) Visit worshipataemc.com to connect with us. We'd love to hear from you!
I talk about the Aramaic version of The Lord’s Prayer (There have been many translations of the Lord’s Prayer. This one translated from the Aramaic version by Jon Marc Hammer.) Father–Mother of the cosmos, shimmering light of All, Focus your light within us as we breathe your holy breath. Enter the sanctuary of our hearts, Uniting within us the sacred rays of your power and beauty. Let your heart’s desire unite Heaven and Earth through our sacred union. Help us fulfill what lies within the circle of our lives today. Forgive our secret fears, as we freely choose to forgive the secret fears of others. Let us not enter into forgetfulness, tempted by false appearances. For from your astonishing fire comes the eternal song Which sanctifies all, renewed eternally in our lives and throughout creation. We seal these words in our hearts, committed in trust and faith.
Episode 3 Prayer There are many ways we can pray to build intimacy and relationship with God. We can be persistent, caring, and aligned with God’s will and plan for ourselves and others. Sharon and Jana discuss how to pray and what to expect in this episode.
In a previous episode, Fr. Mike said that all Catholics grow in the same “soil” together, but the fruit we bear is unique. But what is this common soil? What are the essentials for every Catholic Christian? “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” So there are four elements in the soil: Teachings of the Apostles: Magisterial teaching of the Church, Sacred Scripture, and Tradition. Communal Life (Fellowship): It’s not just me praying to Jesus. We need to share life somehow. Breaking of the Bread: This refers to the Mass, not just eating together. Prayer: There are so many ways to pray as a Catholic, and so many awesome prayers. You can pray the Liturgy of the Hours with the Church, or in your own words, or both. But to be in the soil you have to pray. For a great Liturgy of the Hours app, check out iBreviary. God wants us to flourish in faith, hope, and love for him and for others. He is the one who makes us grow in holiness, but in order to flourish we have to be nourished by the soil he gave us.
Day 13: LOVE ALWAYS TRUSTS, ALWAYS HOPES, ALWAYS PERSEVERES When we young we believed in the immediacy of love. We hoped for it and dreamt of it. Yet for many of us along the way love lost its luster and promise. Maybe our hearts were broken or we experienced deep disappointment or sorrow in love. Perhaps our love was unrequited and we began to ignore our yearning for love and partnership. Perhaps we have bought into the lie of selfishness and individualism above all else. Many of us are avid self-care aficionados, we are doing us (whatever that means) and yet we may still feel sadder and lonelier than ever. Today, I’d like you to assume the position of your young self (whether that’s a teenage version of you or a version in his, her, or their early twenties). I want you to listen to some of the love songs or read some of the love poetry you enjoyed back then and then I’d like you to have a conversation with you. I’d like you to ask your younger self about his/her/their hopes and dreams regarding love. I’d like you to take some time to reacquaint yourself with the part of yourself who is still dreaming of love and who still believes in love wholeheartedly. Welcome back. Witches! This is prayer 13 of our LOVE INVOCATION! Prayer: There’s a Scripture in the Bible that reminds me of my mother. I believe it’s at the end of chapter 13 in first Corinthians. Can’t remember, it’s been a while since I read it but I remember this statement (from Paul? I don’t know). The words were: “[Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” God is love, and because God is fully present with us always, love is fully present with us always. Love is exactly where we stand, filling up the room—permeating creation. Love is the core of our being, is the air we breathe. Love is life. Thank you for another day of life, Spirit, thank you for living through us, walking, speaking, seeing, experiencing and creating through us. Thank you for correcting our thoughts and removing every anti-love thought from our mind and anti-love word from our mouths. Thank you for instilling in us a spirit of courage, and of love and truth. Thank you for implanting a sound mind within us. Our minds now transcend the bullshit of this world. We are here, in this world, but Spirit you are our Home. You are our center and our Source and we are never confused about who maintains absolute dominion. We remember that we have the freedom, agency, will and right to manifest the love and the lives of our choosing regardless of what others are doing or not doing. We are thankful for our freedom and as a demonstration of our gratitude we take this power of creation which has been with and in us from BIRTH seriously. We approach our power of creation with a calm spirit and a clear mind — thoughtfully choosing our experiences, interpretations and next steps with maturity and wisdom. We choose loyal friendships, harmonious families, uninterrupted self-love, and committed, joyous partnerships. I consider it done. So it is. Amen. Asé. Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Akshay Nanavati. Akshay is a former Marine Corps veteran, adventurer, speaker, and author of the best-selling book Fearvana: The Revolutionary Science of How to Turn Fear into Health, Wealth, and Happiness. The Dalai Lama said, “Fearvana inspires us to look beyond our own agonizing experiences and find the positive side of our lives..” Through his work, Akshay has been featured on CNN, Fast Company, INC, Entrepreneur, Forbes, and almost all of the major news outlets. Simply put, Akshay has faced and stood down fear and learned how to bend it to his will. Fear is something everyone faces and struggles with in some form or fashion, and for some time I have wanted to do a show where we dive deeply into facing our fears and overcoming them. When I met Akshay, I knew he was the guy to do it! www.Fearvana.com Akshay and the Fearvana movement really started in high school. He wasted a year of his life with drugs and lost two friends. It was the movie “Black Hawk Down” that triggered to get out of his selfish, meaningless life he was in. He went to join the Marines, but it too a year and half to get in because of blood disorder he has. He had to fight his way in and once in he started to learn how to push himself and started to explore other ways to do it. Outdoor extreme sports became his playground. He was then sent to Iraq where his job was to clear IEDs. When he returned, he had trouble and was diagnosed with PTSD. He started drinking and go to the brink of suicide. When he hit that low, he knew he had to change and learn to heal himself and learn to lead a meaningful life. He began to study it and learned how to manage and control his fear and harness it to his advantage. Fearvana and the business he has built around it came from this journey. What is the one thing people should know about fear and how to use it to their advantage? T he single most important thing is that it is not a negative emotion. The reality is that we just have emotions – it is us who choose whether to view them as negative or not. You must build a positive relationship to suffering. If you can, you can do anything in life. At the 7 min mark, Akshay answers the question, “What is it about fear that paralyzes people and makes us react the way we do to fear? What do we actually have to overcome?” You do not want to miss his answer… It happens from amygdala hijack. Like anything, you have to train yourself and you have to put yourself in high stress environments to create “stress inoculation.” Once you get comfortable with that feeling and can use it to your advantage Fear releases very beneficial chemicals that are essential to success – adrenaline, dopamine, and others. How does somebody recondition themselves to use fear to their advantage? Self-awareness is the key. “Man is a machine, but a very peculiar machine. He is machine that with the right circumstances and treatment can know that he is a machine, and by fully realizing this, he can find the ways to cease to being a machine.” What that means is that simply by acknowledging that we don't control most of what happens in our brain – it's all a part of our subconscious, we can then stop fighting the subconscious, but instead embrace it and decide what we do with it. At the 10 min mark, Akshay gives a great example of this with his PTSD and how he used this process to overcome it. “There is no such thing as irrational fear…” Does fear masquerade itself as other things in our lives? It often shows up in other forms such as stress and anxiety. It is normal to feel stress, especially when you are working hard for something Book: The Upside of Stress “The biggest thing that separates peak performers is that they don't stress over stress” It is a good thing to label our emotions Take us through the Fearvana process? 5 steps: The Unstoppable Warrior Formula Label and Language. Label your emotions – really noticing and calling it out. “I'm feeling fear.” “I'm feeling stress.” Then shift your body language to one of confidence and strength. Meaning. What is the meaning? Why am I feeling this? (bringing consciousness) Not me. This is where you take control and say, “it's not me, it's my brain.” This is how we stop ourselves from assigning our identity to our emotions. Opt for a new meaning. Change the meaning to what you want it to be. Purposeful action. Take consistent action toward rewiring your brain to what you want it to be. Lastly, do pre-emptive strikes. Plan ahead and prepare for situations where you know fear is possible. Know what you are going to do with it. At the 18 min mark, we discuss how to get people to the action step quickly. Why is there a disconnect from when we recognize things to actually acting on them? Akshay gives a number of examples and what to do. One key is to work your way up the ladder of fear. Put yourself in incremental levels fear as you progress. What has surprised you to most in all of your work with fear? How much everyone is suffering In their own way. We tend to think we are the exception and the “odd one out,” when in reality we all are suffering in some way. People should take comfort in that. Even the people you look up to have their own levels of suffering, but there is a gift in that when we learn to find it and embrace it. At the 25 min mark, Akshay talks about the post fear process. What is the most important habit and how do you break any habit at will? The most important habit is the habit of willpower Willpower is engaging your consciousness. It is planning ahead for the suffering you know is coming Willpower makes you comfortable with you fear Build systems to help maintain your willpower because you will drain it throughout the day with the decisions you make. Use the systems to conserve your willpower for when you need it most Use checklists – they keep you from having to think about things so you can act This allows to channel and condition any habit any time you need it In summary, create systems for everything that allow you to save and use your willpower when you need it most. At the 31 minute mark, Akshay talks about his routines and how he sets them up. Uses the “ToDoist” app Works in chunks Morning and evening routines Reading adventure stories Prayer There has to be something you are truly afraid of?? Having children Where he wants to take Fearvana because he doesn't know how he will really get there What have you learned in becoming an entrepreneur that is important to share? Clarity in some form is so important Give value first Being patient with the process Other resources you used to develop the Fearvana Philosophy? Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankel Triggers by Marshall Goldsmith Peak by Anders Erickson Best Quote: “The balance of action and awareness is ultimately how all growth happens…” Akshay's Misfit 3: Getting immense clarity on your why, you what, and your how and then taking consistent action, and adapting along the way Build systems that help you to conserve willpower for when you need it most and plan and track everything you can The most important skill you need to succeed in anything is building the positive relationship to suffering. If you can suffer well, you can handle anything that life throws at you.
