John Flavel in the 5th Volume of his Works begins on Page 437 and continues to Page 494 in relating 12 Cases in which a Christian may keep his own heart under many different situations. In our previous Sessions we have looked at Cases 1 and 2 . Case 1 – How a Christian may keep his heart from pride and carnal security, under the smiles of providence, and constancy of creature-comforts. And Case 2 – How a Christian under great afflictions may keep his heart from repining, or desponding under the hand of God? Under this 2nd Case he gives us nine special helps. (We have looked at 6 special helps under this 2nd Case) Tonight I will attempt to go through helps 7 & 8. Help # 7 says – Again, It may stay your heart, if you will consider that in these troubles, God is about that work which you saw the design of it, your soul would rejoice. Help # 8 – Farther, It would much conduce to the settlement of your hearts, to consider, That by fretting and discontent, you do yourselves more injury than all the afflictions you lie under could do; your own discontent is that which arms your troubles with a sting; it is you that make your burden heavy, by struggling under it.

History is usually told through the lens of famous men, but it's often that lesser-known figures deserve our closer attention. Such is the case with Philip Cary (fl. 1685–1710), a Particular Baptist minister in Dartmouth, England. Cary attended the General Assembly of Baptist churches in London in 1689, and his writings were commended in a letter from that esteemed association. This volume contains the complete works of Cary, published for the first time in 300 years. These three treatises were written to defend the distinctives of the Baptist tradition. In particular, he defended the doctrine of believer's baptism in dialogue with his friends and fellow-townsmen, the Puritan minister John Flavel, and a local physician, Richard Burthogge. Taylor Walls has written a substantial introduction in which we meet Philip Cary, and the reader is well-served by his survey of Cary's theology. Cary's view of the law and covenant theology reveal both his continuity and discontinuity with the broader Reformed tradition. Cary's labor was valued by Baptists in ages past and, after such a lengthy stay in dusty archives, is worthy of rediscovery in our day. Christ Illuminating - John Flavel

John Flavel on SermonAudio

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2026 34:53

The sermon centers on Christ's prophetic office of spiritual illumination, emphasizing that true understanding of Scripture is not merely intellectual but requires divine opening of both mind and heart by the Holy Spirit. It argues that natural reason and even diligent study cannot produce saving knowledge, as spiritual truths are beyond human comprehension apart from Christ's supernatural work, which alone dispels spiritual blindness and enables the soul to perceive the glory of Christ. The text underscores the necessity of Christ's personal intervention—through the Word and Spirit—to transform the heart, making the gospel effectual, and contrasts the temporary, prideful light of worldly wisdom with the humbling, life-changing, and eternal light of saving grace. Ultimately, the sermon calls believers to recognize their dependence on Christ for illumination, to respond with gratitude and obedience, and to labor diligently in the means of grace, knowing that only He can open eyes to see the light of salvation.

We have been looking at the truth of why Christians should make this the great business of their life; their learning to keep their heart with all diligence. The reason for this is given in the text itself – It is out of the heart that spring all the issues of life. All the matters of spiritual importance; everything related to trusting and obeying God. We have looked at 5 of the 6 reasons that John Flavel gives in his book by the same name: 1) That our keeping our heart is to God's glory. 2) That it establishes the sincerity of our profession. 3) – That the beauty of our walk with Christ arises from the heavenly frame and holy order of our spirits. 4) – That the comfort of our souls does much depend upon the keeping of our hearts; for he that is negligent in attending to his own heart is ordinarily a great stranger to assurance and the sweet comforts flowing from it. And 5th – It is upon the improvement of our graces that the keeping of our heart depends. Now, this evening, we will look at the 6th reason of why we should make this the great business of our life.

Ruling elders help shepherd men in both and in this podcast we discuss the early stages of recognizing a call, or even encouraging men to consider if they are called.Discussion centers around Charles Bridges, The Christian Ministry: With an Inquiry into the Causes of its Inefficiency, (Banner of Truth Trust). Su ministerio clandestino parió libros que todavía encienden la conciencia: The Mystery of Providence, The Method of Grace, Keeping the Heart, devocionales para dolientes, marineros y jóvenes. Jeremy has long been a friend of the Banner and serves as book reviews editor for the magazine.  We sat down with Jeremy to talk about his Christian pilgrimage, call to ministry, some favourite books and, well, where he stands on the pronunciation of John Flavel's name.    Note: Jeremy mentioned a book chapter that had helped him towards greater assurance and he identified that as a chapter on the fruits of the Spirit in B. B. Warfield's The Saviour of the World. In retrospect, we think that the chapter in question is actually that on 'The Spirit's Testimony to Our Sonship, Romans 8:16' in Warfield's Faith and Life.    Resources Mentioned or Relevant From the Heart of Spurgeon Podcast If you enjoy the Banner Magazine podcast, you are likely to find From the Heart of Spurgeon most valuable. In Psalm 31, David prays the following about those who fear the Lord:    'In the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men; you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues.'    In a world in which deception so often seems to prevail, and good reputations are tarnished by falsehoods, we need to realise afresh the power (and danger) of the tongue. We must lay hold of the God who can deliver us both from sinning with our tongues, and from 'the strife of tongues' when they are turned unjustly against us.    Featured Resources:  – Maurice Roberts, 'The Strife of Tongues', Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 460 (January 2002).  – Arnold A.
