What does it mean to truly live well in an age of loneliness, distraction, and endless self-improvement advice? In this episode, Dru Johnson sits down with Alan Noble to discuss his new book on the seven Christian virtues and why recovering ancient wisdom may be the key to human flourishing today. Together they explore how virtues such as courage, temperance, prudence, justice, faith, hope, and love shape a life rooted in Christ rather than in modern self-help culture. The conversation examines the growing loneliness epidemic, the difference between "thin" online communities and meaningful relationships, and why many young adults struggle with agency, friendship, dating, and purpose. Noble argues that virtue is not a life hack or productivity technique but a lifelong process of spiritual formation empowered by the Holy Spirit and cultivated within Christian community. Dru and Alan also tackle the relationship between faith and works, discuss mentorship and the loss of intergenerational wisdom, and explore why courage may be one of the most important virtues for our cultural moment. From social media and smartphone habits to friendship and discipleship, this episode offers practical and theological insights for Christians seeking to live faithfully in a fragmented world. Everything is shifting under our feet — social norms, acceptable speech, cultural standards — and the result is a generation drowning in anxiety and uncertainty. Alan Noble, professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University and author of To Live Well: Practical Wisdom for Moving Through Chaotic Times, joins Brian From to make the case that the seven classical virtues offer a grounding that goes deeper and older than any TikTok life hack. He unpacks fortitude — why facing suffering for the sake of the good is one of the most countercultural things a person can do right now — and prudence, the practical wisdom that gets stuck not in the deliberating but in the failure to act resolutely. Alan also shares what he's seeing in his college students: plenty of faith, but a desperate hunger to know how that faith speaks into the actual struggles of daily life — choosing a career, asking someone out, managing social anxiety. They don't want abstract theology. They want to know if any of this is real enough to help them today. The answer, Alan says, is yes. Living Well in a Fractured World: Rediscovering Christian Virtue | with Dr. Alan Noble

Stephanie Rousselle and guest Dr. Alan Noble discuss living well in today's world by reclaiming forgotten Christian virtues. Drawing from Noble's book, To Live Well, let's consider practical steps Christians can take to thrive amid cultural confusion.According to Noble, we're surrounded by an overwhelming cacophony of voices (social media, celebrities, self-help gurus, even misguided pastors), each offering conflicting advice on how to live a meaningful life. This deluge of ideas leaves many—Christians included—feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and directionless. The key challenge: how do we discern a coherent, godly way of living amid so many broken narratives?Noble suggests reclaiming classic virtues—time-honored character strengths rooted in Christian tradition and Scripture—as a path toward living well. He points out that Protestants, in particular, have neglected these virtues, though historically theologians like Augustine, Aquinas, and Calvin all upheld their value.Practicing these virtues is not about earning favor with God. Instead, Christians live out virtue in grateful response to God's grace, relying on the Spirit's power, and always within community, where we are supported, challenged, and forgiven when we fail. So, let's consider 3 of the 7 virtues Alan Noble offers in his book.1. Prudence (choosing decisively)Prudence means choosing decisively and wisely. In a world obsessed with limitless choice, prudence involves slowing down, humbly discerning reality, seeking what truly glorifies God, deliberate decision-making, and resolute action. Prudence guards against both indecision (paralysis) and the sunk-cost fallacy—stubbornly sticking with poor choices out of pride or prior investment.2. Fortitude (Suffering steadfastly)Modern culture avoids suffering at all costs, but Noble explains that fortitude is about the courage to endure or risk suffering for the sake of the good. Suffering, rightly faced, builds character and produces hope—connecting deeply to the sanctifying work God does in His people. Fortitude enables Christians to move through hardship, trusting that even suffering has purpose.Magnanimity is boldly living into the excellence and gifts God has given, for His glory and the good of others. Pusillanimity, by contrast, is timidity—hiding or burying your God-given talents out of fear. As illustrated in the parable of the talents, God calls each believer to step out in faith and use their gifts with courage.3. Temperance (living moderately)Temperance is the willful restraint from doing everything you can do, especially when surrounded with endless technological, social, and material options. Choosing not to indulge every impulse, but to order choices for God's glory, is countercultural but vital for soul health. When we reorder our perspectives around these timeless virtues, we move from confusion and anxiety toward clarity, purpose, and peace—living as God intended, by His grace and for His glory.ApplicationSelf-examine: Where do you feel confused or pressured by the “heap of broken images” in your life?Practice virtues: Choose to cultivate prudence, fortitude, magnanimity, and temperance, seeking wisdom, courage, excellence, and self-control in daily choices.Pursue community: Remember that virtue grows in fellowship with others; seek relationships that encourage and hold you accountable.Rest in grace: When you fail, rely on God's grace and learn from your mistakes. Embrace the freedom found in Christ's finished work.MORE ABOUT “TO LIVE WELL”You were told to live a meaningful life. But no one ever told you how.Our lives are shaped by contradictions. Competing voices tell us who to be, what to want, and how to live. The result? A fragmented moral imagination. We're handed a thousand broken messages and left to cobble together something resembling a life. But instead of clarity, we get exhaustion. Instead of wisdom, we get anxiety. This leaves you asking yourself How can I get through when I feel alone and confused? How can I live well in this broken and chaotic world? In To Live Well, Alan Noble shows you how you can not only endure but flourish in life. Through exploring the seven virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance, faith, hope, and love, you'll learn how tochoose gracefully, act justly, suffer steadfastly, live moderately, believe soundly, hope resolutely, andlove rightly. This book won't give you a ten-step plan to fix everything. It doesn't promise clarity overnight. But it will invite you into something deeper: an ancient, time-tested path of habits of heart and mind that shape who we are and how we live. With honesty, theological depth, and a mentor's heart, Noble names your confusion and offers an antidote―not by escaping the mess but by learning how to live faithfully within it. If you've ever longed for something solid in a world that just wants to sell you more temporary stuff, To Live Well is a good place to begin.Do you feel the pain and pressure of spiritual exhaustion? Do you feel unworthy despite consistent effort? Do you lack joy in your personal faith? Do you desire practical, daily rhythms that sustain delight in God?  That's why I wrote "Awaken Delight." It will help you (re)discover:1-Delight in God is identity-shaping, not emotion-driven. Delight in God is not fleeting emotion but resilient identity.2-Delight in God is altogether trust, satisfaction in God, relational intimacy with Him. Delight in God is often expressed and grown through resilient joy under suffering.3-Jesus is the center of every endeavor to delight in God.These are some of the truths we ponder together through my book, Awaken Delight."Awaken Delight" is a theologically grounded spiritual formation book for thoughtful believers who feel spiritually fatigued, and ready to embrace the reality of delight in God.Find out more at https://www.gospelspice.com/awakendelight Support us on Gospel Spice, PayPal and Venmo!

Devin will be sharing his story of how he navigated the tumultuous storms of a terrifying and difficult two-year struggle with doubt and how he found his way back to Jesus. Devin's story intersects with us here at Watchman Fellowship, not just because of the next two episodes of the Profile, but because when Devin first entered his crisis, he'd attended in person one of our ministry's Atheist & Christian Book Club meetings. Also, one of the first Christian books he'd read during his difficult time was actually one of our own books, The Story of the Cosmos - How the Heavens Declare the Glory of God. Here on part one, Devin shares how his crisis began. Next week on part two, you'll hear the remarkable conclusion to his crisis and how he returned to Jesus. Devin Squeri, born and raised in New York, graduated with degrees in Physics and Mathematics from the State University of New York at Albany. His professional journey is highlighted by his founding of a human resources information systems company in 1997. In addition to his endeavors in technology, Mr. Squeri is an active real estate investor, home builder, and land developer. Behind proclamations of the Gospel, behind the rigorous apologetic defenses for the Christian faith, behind many of God's chosen servants, and behind those who fiercely opposes Christianity, are many who, despite all outward appearances to the contrary, are struggling with various degrees of depression, anxiety, OCD, and despair. On this special one-part episode with professor of literature at Oklahoma Baptist University and author Dr. Alan Noble, we discuss navigating through seasons of depression and despair. Alan shares with us wisdom, practical experience, and candid honest reflections about wrestling with difficult mental health struggles as a professor, father, husband, and Christian. We talk about his short but very candid and encouraging little book On Getting Out of Bed - The Burden & Gift of Living. It's a good time to take stock of our spiritual practices, and our guide today is the author and professor Alan Noble. In his book, On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden & Gift of Living, Alan contends that simply deciding to engage with the world each day constitutes a declaration of the goodness of God:“Now, there may come times when you are required by your suffering to radically depend upon others to carry you out of bed. My advice is to embrace those moments, knowing that you'll carry your neighbor in return when the time comes.”This episode is drawn from an Online Conversation recorded in 2023. “The church is a multiethnic and multicultural assembly of believers spanning history that God has called into fellowship with Christ and with one another. We gather regularly to consider the teachings of the Bible and to orient our lives around God's coming kingdom. Together we wait for God to make all things new, and we bear witness to the world of what God has already done.” - Becoming God's FamilyWhat is the purpose of the church? If you talked with different people you'd likely get different answers. You might hear that it's a place to worship God. You might hear that it's just a place people go to feel better about their lives. There's a broader conversation happening about whether or not the church still matters. Even amongst Christians, there's a question over why they need to go to church when they can just believe in Jesus and read the Bible on their own. Today's episode is all about the church and the importance of with-ness. My guest today is Dr. Carmen Joy Imes, associate professor of Old Testament at Biola University and author of the new book Becoming God's Family: Why the Church Still Matters. In this conversation we talk about her trilogy of books about our relationship with and to God (of which this is the third), we talk about why there's even a question around whether the church matters or not, we talk about the role and function of the church, and the truth of how church gatherings are really oriented around what we cannot do on our own. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “The act of confessing our sins to one another is a graced invitation to practice the way of faith, hope, and love. The soul tempted to despair will be particularly allergic to ecclesial confession, but it is here that they will find great remedy for their agonizing condition. For in confessing their sins to one another, they are heard with the faith of fellow saints, they are encouraged by the hope of fellow pilgrims, and they are loved with the charity of brothers and sisters.” - Pastoral ConfessionsConfession is not an easy topic - but it is a healthy topic. Oftentimes when the topic of confession is brought up, it's met with one of two responses: 1. "My walls are now up and I'm tuning out what is being talked about." 2. "This is so true and important and a lot of other people have things to confess." But like I said, confession is healthy. And even more than that, confession is necessary. Now I may be biased, but one of the best books on confession releases one week from today - Pastoral Confessions written by my friend Jamin Goggin. Jamin has been on this podcast a few times in the past. He's an associate professor at Talbot School of Theology, Director of the Healthy Pastor Initiative for Finishing the Task, and one of the most thoughtful theologians I know. In today's conversation Jamin and I talk about what led him to write about confession, the real human struggles with sin and confession, some ways we can more normalize confession, and much more. You can find a link to pre-order Pastoral Confession in the show notes. I should point out, and we talk about this in the conversation, Pastoral Confessions is a book primarily written to Pastors, but its deep thoughts and themes of confession are important for all of us. “The next generation will live into the words we speak over them, so we should consider what words we are speaking over Gen Z. We, older generations, are responsible for raising, stewarding, and discipling the next generation, and right now, they are hearing from us, “We don't like you.” - An excerpt from What Gen Z Really Wants to Know About God. We're in a bit of a tale as old as time moment. There is a lot of discussion about Gen Z - and a lot of it negative. Honestly this seems like a not uncommon issue where older generations speak negatively about younger generations, but there is something that does seem different about the conversation surrounding Gen Z. Gen Z is considered the first digital native generation and there is data to show a decline in church engagement in Gen Z. As I read from the excerpt earlier, there is a narrative in place that Gen Z is lazy, difficult, and weak. But what if we flipped the narrative? What if we approached Gen Z with hope and optimism, maybe even appreciation for what we can learn from them? Gen Z isn't just the future of the church, it's the church today so how can we think of and approach Gen Z differently than the prevailing narratives. My guest today is Dr. Tanita Maddox, national director at Young Life and author of the new book What Gen Z Really Wants to Know About God. In this conversation, we talk about who Gen Z is, how they think, the relationship between Gen Z and the church, and why we should not only be hopeful about Gen Z but even see them as a brave, resilient generation. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “As Scripture reveals, the kind of wisdom we drink in ultimately guides our choices. It conditions our thoughts and molds our character and habits to become who we are. It influences the longings and desires of our heart and the ways we seek to find meaning. The right question then becomes, what kind of wisdom are we currently being guided by?” - An excerpt from The Man You're Meant to Be. There's a lot of talk lately about men and manhood. The rise of the so-called "manosphere" is a major factor in this. As we've talked about before, social media and podcasts and other forms of media are can be so specific as ecosystems that it's easier than ever to be fed almost exclusively however you want to - like going to a Cheesecake Factory but choosing to only get the same thing repeatedly. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing - the choice you make can be delicious and you can enjoy it every day. But . . . it can also mean that you're only being fed by one source and that can and will begin to shape you. What you intake (what you watch or listen to) can and will shape your worldview. This is a major part of the manhood conversation and a part of the new book The Man You're Meant to Be by my friend John Simons. John was a pastor at Saddleback Church working with men and is currently the men's pastor at Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee. “Why do some of us experience Christianity as a burden and others as a refuge? The answer, I am convinced, has to do with grace. Grace is the Big Relief at the heart of Christianity. When grace is down-played or qualified, faith turns into a project and then a burden. Project religion - the ancient human enterprise of proving ourselves morally and spiritually worthy of God's love - is everywhere. When anchored to grace, however, Christianity remains good news. More than that, faith becomes a source of energy rather than a drain.” - an excerpt from The Big ReliefToday I'm excited to talk about one of my favorite books of the year. As I've mentioned a few times on this podcast, I've been on a bit of a grace kick lately. Grace was something I knew about, but honestly hadn't spent a whole ton of time considering. It's just the last few months though that I've really been sitting with grace and seeing just how beautiful, how important it is. So imagine my excitement when I saw a book about the urgency of grace in a worn-out world - right up my alley! And imagine how happy I was to start reading this book and seeing how good and funny it was. So today I'm thrilled to have on David Zahl, author of many books including The Big Relief. In this conversation, David and I talk about what makes grace stand out, the vertical and horizontal nature of grace, the difference between grace and mercy, how the church can be better beacons of grace, how to start living a grace first life today, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Originally Released July 4 2023Saddleback Church Content Development Pastor Jason Wieland is joined by author, teacher, and spoken word artist Hosanna Wong for a conversation around identity in Christ and how to adopt the rhythms of Jesus. One of the most fundamental questions of life is Who Am I? and, in Christian circles, we are often rushed to answer that our identity is in Christ. But how do we really find out what this means and, even when we do feel connected to Jesus, how do we keep that connection? This conversation addresses these questions and dives deep into looking at four rhythms or spiritual disciplines that you can begin adopting in your own life. Hosanna Wong is an international speaker, best-selling author and spoken word artist helping everyday people know Jesus for real. Widely known for her spoken word piece, "I Have A New Name," Hosanna shares in churches, conferences, prisons, and other events around the world, reaching across various denominations, backgrounds and cultures.Born and raised in an urban ministry on the streets of San Francisco, Hosanna later packed her life into suitcases and traveled to churches and other ministries throughout the United States to share about Jesus through spoken word poetry. During those years without a permanent home, she began speaking and creating resources to serve the local and global Church.Hosanna currently travels and speaks year-round, and serves on teaching teams at churches throughout the United States. “For the beauty of a journey is that it doesn't need to be just one thing but can be many things spread out over time and over the many legs of the adventure . . . The Christian story may have already played out with robed people in a bygone past, but I believe it also continues to move, roll on, slosh, and rise in me each morning and moon.” - The Journey of GodAll of history has a central theme: God wants a family. This is why the universe was made - so God could make people. This is the story of the Israelites through the Old Testament. This is redemption story, Jesus living on earth and dying on the cross to make it possible for God's family to live with him forever. This is the story of the church - spreading the Good News that God wants a family and that family learning how to live together. This is the story of the end, God's family finally living with Him in perfect relationship forever. This may be a central theme, but there is so much in it to unpack and J.D. Lyonhart does just that in his new book, The Journey of God. J.D. is a professor of religion and philosophy at University of Jamestown and co-host of the Spiritually Incorrect Podcast. In this episode, J.D. and I talk about why it's okay to have fun when talking about the Bible, the central theme of Jesus' presence, how we should think about sin and redemption, current issues facing the church, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Originally Released Dec. 5, 2023When an athlete trains and practices in his or her sport, they are achieving multiple goals at the same time. They get stronger by lifting weights. They get more agile and increase endurance by running and doing sprints. They develop muscle memory by practicing their sport and certain moves over and over and over again. All of this is in pursuit of being ready for the competition – ready for game day. As Christians, we have our own exercises – we call them spiritual practices. We grow stronger in our faith through reading Scripture. We grow more agile and increase endurance through fasting and silence and solitude. We develop muscle memory through gratitude. Today's episode is all about spiritual practices. Host Jason Wieland is joined today by Reward Sibanda. Reward and Jason go in-depth on what spiritual practices are, what they do to and for you, and why it's important to make spiritual practices a part of your life. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. What if the crushing weight of modern life isn't a bug in the system but a feature of a false belief? In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer is joined by Dr. Alan Noble to explore his compelling book, You Are Not Your Own. Together, they unpack why our culture's demand to “define yourself” leads to despair, and how belonging to Christ—not ourselves—is the good news we’ve been trained to forget. Drawing from the Heidelberg Catechism, zoocosis, and Sylvia Plath, this conversation dives deep into anthropology, social pressure, identity, and the role of the Church in resisting cultural formation. A quietly radical episode that reminds us that true freedom isn’t found in self-expression, but in surrender. It's called On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden & Gift of Living by Alan Noble. This short, 104-page book is rich in its look at anxiety, depression, and other hardships of life. It doesn't sugarcoat the realities of suffering. For anybody who may not struggle with these issues themselves, Dr. Noble paints an important picture of what life is truly like for those in this daily fight. However, this book is truly one of hope as it reminds us of the reality of our good creation, the presence of our good Creator and the truth that your life is a testimony of that goodness - whether you are having a good day or not.Join Jason as he dives into this impactful, important book. We aren't always honest about how difficult normal human life is.   In this 2nd part of a 2 part interview, we discuss that for the majority of people, sorrow, despair, anxiety, and mental illness are everyday experiences. While we have made tremendous advancements in therapy and psychiatry, the burden of living still comes down to mundane choices that we each must make—like the daily choice to get out of bed.   In this deeply personal essay, Alan Noble considers the unique burden of everyday life in the modern world. Sometimes, he writes, the choice to carry on amid great suffering—to simply get out of bed—is itself a powerful witness to the goodness of life, and of God.

We've all heard the stats: Anxiety, depression, and loneliness are on the rise. Yet, therapies, medications, and other techniques for alleviating mental afflictions abound. What are we missing? Alan Noble, author of “On Getting Out of Bed,” joins us today to first normalize mental anguish as an everyday experience for the majority of people. His book takes on the central challenge of life: Why is it worth living? And how do we survive all of this suffering? Alan and Patrick discuss how Western society historically perpetuated the lies that mental suffering is abnormal and that we can conquer anything by maximizing our own efficiency. But do techniques for alleviating anxiety and depression really work? Or are they making things even worse? They discuss how therapy culture has backfired and how too many latch onto their mental diagnosis as their identity. Plus, is our environment breeding more anxiety and depression? And how can we enter well into the anxiety of others? Listen now!
