SAVE THE LAST WORD FOR ME #6: Chatting with podcaster, audio dramatist, collaborator, voice actor and friend Jack Ward (03/2017) Again from our archives, we present the 6th episode of a discussion podcast that I had high hopes for, but which only went for 9 episodes or so. But the discussions are fun and if you're interested in voice actors' lives, we delve pretty deep in these interviews. Jack Ward is the creator and co-host of "The Sonic Society", a long-running weekly podcast out of Halifax, Nova Scotia that showcases new audio dramas. He featured my first two episodes of "Pulp-Pourri Theatre" back in 2013, no questions asked, even though the productions themselves were, to be honest, questionable. But we have become good friends, and have collaborated on many projects since then, and have joined with a handful of other like-minded individuals to create the Mutual Audio Network. Jack is the head-man at the tiller though, make no mistake. Anyway, this interview was fun and I hope you enjoy it.
It's episode one of a new, limited anthology series from 63audio and the Narada Radio Company! "Adventure Trail" brings back to the Narada microphone The Old-Timer, a character first heard way back in the first season of "Pulp-Pourri Theatre". He's back after all this time to spin a few yarns and tell some tall tales about adventures he's had over his long life, and this first outing is a prime example. Set in the Old West, "Loco or Love" tells the story of a sheriff and his deputy, lifelong pals, whose relationship falls apart when they both fall for a pretty lady who isn't exactly what she seems, and whose jobs are threatened when a crime spree takes place under their very noses. THE EYES OF THAR (SCI-FI) For this episode from Pulp-Pourri Theatre's fourth season, we journey to the Red Planet for a weird sci-fi adventure that takes place both under the surface and in a completely different universe. It's called "The Eyes of Thar" and was penned by that prolific pulpster, Henry Kuttner. Kuttner lived a short life, dying in 1958 at the age of 42, but in that time he published dozens of short stories for the pulps, 18 or more novels, and just as many stories for the Golden-Age Green Lantern comic book series. If you haven't heard of Kuttner, perhaps you've read a story published under one of 17 different pseudonyms; his contemporaries felt he'd been cheated out of his well-deserved fame, because his fans didn't know he'd written so many stories under so many names. "The Eyes of Thar" was originally published under the Kuttner name in the Fall 1944 issue of Planet Stories. The adaptation was written by Pete Lutz in 2014 and recorded in 2016, with some pick-up lines recorded in 2017. Ms. Morizawa's introduction was recorded in 2017. Stay tuned after the episode to hear a very special announcement for a worthy organization. This production is sponsored by Dromedary Cigarettes and stars the Narada Radio Company. Dr. Philip Schaefer is a geneticist in Celestial City who has invented what's being called an Earth-shattering device: The D.N.A. Pit, which is capable of altering any living creature's DNA. Dr. Schaefer wants to use his device for the good of mankind, but forces beyond his control may try to subvert his miraculous device to their own twisted ends! Listen and enjoy! THE BIRD AND THE SNAKE, adapted by Pete Lutz from a story by Clem Hanlon. NARADA RADIO COMPANY RATED R. "The Bird and the Snake" comes from a 1959 issue of Adam Magazine, a slick "girlie-mag", so not technically a pulp story, yet Clem Hanlon's tale of a Polish-American cop in Chi-town really smacks of the pulp style. I'm proud of this final series episode, and feel that with it, we sent Pulp-Pourri Theatre out with a real bang, and not a whimper. I hope you feel the same after hearing it. Our theme, and transitional music, was specially composed for this episode by Katharine Seaton. I absolutely love what she did here.
