With radio play on Western North Carolina radio stations, as well as shows around the region, Stephen Evans & the True Grits are becoming a local favorite.    "Buzz of Bees" is their latest album, released in December of 2022, of folk rock with some songs dipping their toes into other styles like Americana, Latin Folk, and Vaudeville.  Singles from the LP, ‘Ghost Among the Trees', ‘Winning the Day', and ‘Estefania', are already receiving radio play on local stations as well as national online radio and music podcasts.  Look for Stephen Evans & the True Grits playing fun live shows all around the area to support this beautiful album.   Emerging Manchester indie up and comer Jack Hyphen returns with the vibrant, breezy new single ‘Not Medicinal' (June 28th). Having made a name for himself as one to watch with live shows in and around Manchester, Jack Hyphen continues to showcase the intricate songwriting and radiant musicianship which has seen him build a fanbase.    Emerging from the breakup of Herefordshire Indie/Rock band Point Zero, where he served as the frontman, Jack returned with acoustic singles that showcased his vocal and lyrical prowess. His evolution into a 4-piece alternative pop/rock outfit in mid-2019 brought a punchy, atmospheric edge to his music.    The new single ‘Not Medicinal' continues this approach with intricate interweaving guitar lines, smothered in atmospheric modulation and reverb which glides over the punching drums and driving bass. Topped with Jack's emotive, understated vocal delivery, the track blends its energetic undercurrent with an ethereal edge to create a unique, accessible yet thoughtful and delicate soundscape.    Having already gained widespread press support and radio play from the likes of Amazing Radio and XS Manchester, Jack has opened for a number of breakout bands including Crystal Tides, Jeremiah Ferrari, and James Walsh (Starsailor), even gaining acclaim from BBC Radio 6 Music's Chris Hawkins for the quality of his live performance. Jack continues to grow, showcasing some of his finest work yet on the new single ‘Not Medicinal'.

Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast.   In this episode I talk to Chris Hawkins, the early morning DJ and "How to DJ" podcast host as he shares his journey into radio.   Stemming from his early days work experience at BBC Radio Shropshire where he kept his badge and just kept turning up and making tea, to his current role at BBC 6 Music. A true enthusiast of the medium, Chris emphasises the importance of dedication in the world of radio – noting it's the 10,000 hours that it takes to get you noticed. It's a full-time job as he gets sent 200 songs a week to listen to “you don't want to miss the next Coldplay” he says.   Beyond his day job, Chris delves into the podcasting world with "How to DJ," offering listeners an intimate look into the life stories, inspirations, and misadventures of DJs, blending anecdotes from famous and lesser-known names. With insights into curating radio shows and club sets. A must listen for all music enthusiasts and wannabe DJ's. Chris is also an advocate for open conversations about mental health, something close to my heart, and the unifying power of music through his role as an ambassador for Nordoff and Robbins Music Therapy. He cites young artist Hack Baker who very openly talked about his own mental health on the show, the outpouring was huge, and people still talk about that show says Chris. And of course, its no secret that the drink and drug underworld is prevalent in this industry and “some fall victim” including DJ Barry Ashworth, lead singer in the Dub Pistols, who talked of the highs and lows on Chris's podcast.  The episode concludes with a nod to his dream collaborations and the reformation of iconic bands, “I'd love to see Talking Heads reform –at Glastonbury!” If you enjoyed listening to Chris and would like to listen to more of his “How to DJ” podcasts, click here, or join him for new music on BBC Radio 6 from 5am.   If you're enjoying the Fail Forward podcasts, follow me on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn for all the latest on my mission to help business owners Fail Forward.    Facebook https://www.facebook.com/failforwardhenri LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/henri-ghijben-539132101/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@failforward12 Instagram https://www.instagram.com/henrighijben/

Chris Hawkins is the Colorado Urban Conservation Manager for The Nature Conservancy, where he leads the organization's efforts in Denver to “solve global challenges like the biodiversity and climate emergencies by supporting and creating more sustainable, efficient ways of living.” - When many people think of The Nature Conservancy, they may envision large-scale conservation efforts across vast grasslands and wild landscapes– but TNC also conducts some of its most innovative conservation work in cities— work that leads to more resilient, healthy, and equitable communities. Chris's work in Denver is a shining example of how nature-based solutions in densely populated urban areas can have positive ripple effects far beyond the city limits. - Chris was born and raised on the east coast, attended college in Boston, and from the very beginning of his career, he's been focused on service and causes greater than himself. He's worked as a Corps Member of AmericaCorps, as Chief of Staff in New York City's Department of Environmental Protection, and for the past nine years, he's been with the Nature Conservancy. As you'll hear in this conversation, Chris's diverse professional experiences have allowed him to bring a unique and effective perspective to the complex world of urban conservation. - Chris was nice enough to join me at my dining room table for an engaging and educational conversation about all things urban conservation. We started out by discussing why TNC has chosen to devote its resources and expertise to conservation in cities, and he explains the unique challenges facing cities in the West. We discuss how public health is directly related to people's access to nature, and how the simple-but-not-easy strategy of planting trees in neighborhoods can have huge conservation and public health benefits. As is the case with all of my conservation-related conversations, we discuss the critical importance of relationships, and how Chris has managed to build relationships with a diverse group of Denver residents. We also discuss his professional trajectory, the importance of exporting urban conservation ideas to other cities, and the critical roles of mayors and local leadership. And finally, Chris is a serious history buff, so we have a great discussion about books. - There is so much fascinating information packed into this episode, and I greatly appreciate Chris's taking the time to share his wisdom with the Mountain & Prairie community. Check out the episode notes for links to everything we discuss. In this episode, Chris Hawkins speaks with one of the finest voices in the radio business, Absolute Radio's Leona Graham. After catching the radio bug at university, Leona certainly paid her dues DJing on local commercial radio stations across the country. Her tenacity and talent paid off with a slot on Virgin Radio that led to her becoming a long standing fixture at Absolute since its launch back in 2008. She's many strings to her bow with popular podcasts a part of that repertoire but music remains her passion and she's even recently begun playing events which she says is a whole new discipline! In this episode, Chris Hawkins catches up with Gary Crowley; an old colleague from their time at BBC Radio London together. A music obsessive who's passion was lit from his early teens as punk exploded, Gary's career began writing fanzines, working in radio & TV promotion, as well as a writer at the NME. From there he became the youngest voice on London's Capital Radio which led him to Radio London, the launch of XFM and back to where he feels most at home on BBC Radio London. Gary's joy for music is infectious, and his ability to tell a whole heap of great stories about his career, is equally enthralling! Hello! So, you might have noticed that I talk about OCD quite a lot on the show. It's a condition that I've lived with all my adult life, and sadly, it's been as pertinent to my career as a music journalist as music has been. In fact, it's something I'm writing a lot about right now, so stay tuned for that - though you should really join my Substack! But it occurs to me that some of you might not know exactly what OCD – or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – is. It is, after all, one of the most misunderstood anxiety disorders, often used as common parlance for a bit fussy, or tidy, or obsessed with cleanliness. If you listened to my recent interview with Danny McNamara from Embrace about our shared experience with the disorder, then you might have clocked on that it is much more than that. It is hell. But I made a commitment to myself in recent years to talk as much about OCD as possible, because if there's anyone like my 19-year-old self out there – confused, scared, without a clue what is happening to them - then they might need to hear the stuff I have to say. If there's something I've learned in recent years, there is hope, and I'm not alone in my experiences, not at all. Earlier this year I spoke to Chris Hawkins on BBC Radio 6 Music, during the station's Mental Health Awareness week coverage, about my life as a music journalist with OCD. I thought it might be nice to share that conversation on the podcast here, because it dips into my time working at NME and the like. It's music adjacent content, a bit like the episodes of Shame I published on this feed last month. If you're interested in OCD, then know that I do a podcast all about just that. It's called The OCD Chronicles, and it's available, blah blah blah blah. I hope you find this episode interesting/useful.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Kings Elliot over Zoom video. One of 2022's most promising new voices Kings Elliot releases her sophomore EP Bored Of The Circus via Verve Forecast/Interscope. The EP is also available to purchase on limited edition 10'' vinyl. Along with the EP, Kings Elliot releases the official music video for “Ashes By The Morning.” WATCH “ASHES BY THE MORNING”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4oZ5HKaWos LISTEN TO BORED OF THE CIRCUShttps://kingselliot.lnk.to/BoredoftheCircus On Bored Of The Circus, the half-Swiss, half-British singer-songwriter further establishes herself as one of altpop's leading up-and-comers. Elliot digs into her deepest emotions while crafting finely wrought pop songs that feel both incredibly intimate and otherworldly. The contrast between her to-the-bone lead vocal, which precisely describes her internal torment, and the voices surrounding her, a hovering choir accompaniment made up of multiple tracks of Kings' own voice and arranged by chief collaborator halfrhymes, results in an out-of- time musical experience that heightens all the knotty emotions outlined in her lyrics as she explores themes of mental health, innocence, heartbreak, growth, and hope. Elliot recently concluded supporting U.S. pop-rock megaforce Imagine Dragons on their North American stadium tour, which kicked off in early August. She also took the School Night stage on September 12th at Bardot in Los Angeles alongside Josh Fudge, Reve, and Cian Ducrot. Elliot remains a leading advocate for mental health - an open book with her fans, she explores and speaks openly about her battle through her music and her social pages have become a safe haven and space of community for fans. Her bruising honesty and dedication to the craft of songwriting have already made her beloved by fans around the world, and she's already been called “a future star” by BBC6 music maven Chris Hawkins. Kings Elliot has already received critical praise from Consequence, Teen Vogue, Billboard, Clash, Wonderland, The Line of Best Fit, COLORS and Lyrical Lemonade, among others, as well as social support from Reese Witherspoon, Dixie D'Amelio, Lewis Capaldi and Milky Chance. Her music has been added to a host of notable Spotify and Apple Music playlists as well. We want to hear from you! It's time for another edition of In The Circle with the boys chomping at the bit to break down Before getting into that, Victor sits down with USC Upstate's Chris Hawkins who became the newest member of the 1,000 Win Club last weekend in DeLand. Coach shares his thoughts on reaching the historic milestone as well as facing his former All-American and current Stetson Head Coach Shelli Robinson last week. He also chats about his teams historic start to the season, the depth of his roster, how he ended up coaching softball, and much more.  Eric joins the show as he and Victor take an in-depth look at the first RPI that came out earlier this week. After Eric gets on his soap box about the latest softball polls, the guys look at who are the biggest winners and losers in regard to the RPI (which is fluid by the way). They also look at what conferences could be in the best and worst positions as conference play begins.
