Five months on from the sale to DAZN, last night's Foxtel Upfront ‘26 event signalled that for the most part, it will be business as usual. Those of us who trooped across Anzac Bridge to Sydney's old White Bay Power Station saw a show that (not surprisingly given the new owner) swung the emphasis towards the sport portfolio, with less focus on the Binge side of the entertainment portfolio.So far, more has stayed the same than has changed. Kayo, not DAZN, will remain the sports streaming brand, for now at least.Despite losing its HBO content when Warner Brother Discovery launched Max, Binge remains - now leaning on NBC Universal for content. The Paper, the spinoff from The Office, started streaming last week. Ahead of the event, CEO Patrick Delany told me: “It's held its own and it's far more profitable without the extraordinary cost of Warner Brothers in it.”Delany wasn't at last night's event, instead flying to London for a DAZN board meeting; he sent a video message. His absence wasn't particularly jarring. The Foxtel Upfronts have always been more the domain of the boss of the Foxtel Media sales house, Mark Frain.As well as Delany, we also spoke to Frain ahead of the event. Highlights from both those conversations accompany this post as a podcast.Although the emphasis was on sport - with perhaps two-thirds of the presentation dedicated to that side of the business - there were entertainment recommissions announced too, including Colin from Accounts, High Country, The Great Australian Bakeoff and Selling Homes. And new content included Run, The Postcard Bandit, and Tough Love.But the direction is towards sport. According to Delany, they've never let a rights deal go that they wanted to keep. “We've never lost a sports rights content that we didn't want to lose.” Apart from the English Premier League back in 2015, perhaps.Soon the platforms will slide across to DAZN's platform technology. And, says Delany, subscribers to the original Foxtel broadcast service will eventually see their streaming service Foxtel Go move across too. (As a grumpy subscriber, that can't come too soon for me.)Not that the company will be investing any more in the Foxtel hardware. IQ4 and IQ5 boxes will be refurbished or retired. There will be no IQ6.The other piece of hardware that will quickly fade from view is Hubbl. Delany confirmed in the interview that the push is over 18 months after it began. Hubbl is, as he puts it, “in maintenance mode”. That's not quite send to the farm, but close. Given that the company sold more than 100,000 units (Delany revealed it's “not tens of thousands” - they can't just turn off the tap. So technical support for Hubbl will presumably remain for some time.And Frain's push to create a new centre of gravity for the screen industry away from free to air continues to edge forward with the Video Futures Collection becoming an organisation in its own right.Director of customer engagement Toby Dewar told the room:  “All of this has brought us to a key milestone for the VFC. We are becoming an independent industry backed body. What started two years ago as an informal think tank led by Foxtel Media, it's now becoming something bigger.“With structure, governance and a simple mandate to go faster, to go broader, and to ensure we keep the customer at the center of how we push forward with the streaming revolution.”There was no announcement last night of one of the free to air players joining the VFC, which Foxtel has been pushing for. But Dewar did announce, slightly vaguely: “I'm excited to say that along with Seven, Nine and Paramount, we are exploring ways to collaborate and focus on shared research projects to better understand the outcomes across screens.”Other announcements included a move into gaming via a tie-up with Livewire; a push into retail media and a new brand-funded content arm with (I thought rather clever) name of Narratv. Is branded entertainment back?* Declaration of interest: Foxtel provided me with accommodation and covered some of my travel to the eventNine share price drops by a third after Domain exitNine's share price went through a record 35.9% wipeout on Thursday, taking almost $1bn off its market capitalisation.However the change was expected, as the market revalued the stock after the sale of Domain to US real estate giant Costar. Yesterday was the date for Nine's shares to go ex-dividend, which means that anybody who buys Nine shares from now on are not entitled to the special dividend from the Domain sale when it is paid out at the end of the month.Nine's new market cap is $1.7bn.It was also a generally down day elsewhere on the Unmade Index, which monitors the performance of Australia's listed media and marketing companies.Seven West Media lost 3.5%, Ooh Media lost 2.6% and Ive group lost 2.2%.In the lower reaches of the index, Sports Entertainment Group - owner of SEN Radio - lost 7.3% while research house Pureprofile lost 6.7%. Vinyl Group gained 15%.Thanks to Nine's big drop, the Unmade Index also saw the biggest one-day fall in its history, losing 20.3% to land on 464.2 points.Time to leave you to your Friday.I'll be back tomorrow with Best of the Week. Vinay Prasad is back at the FDA as chief of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Prasad's return—which hit the news wires Saturday morning—came just 10 days after his unexpected exit on July 29, following blowback over the saga involving Sarepta Therapeutics' Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene therapy Elevidys, and a campaign by conversative personalities to oust the outspoken physician.Elsewhere in the government, Gray Delany, former head of HHS' and President Donald Trump's Make America Healthy Again agenda, has been fired—days after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. axed 22 mRNA vaccine contracts under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Delany's ouster came after he allegedly butted heads with other agency officials over how announcements were made, according to reporting from Endpoints News. The mRNA contract cuts, meanwhile, have sparked criticism from the scientific community and concern that the growing anti-mRNA sentiment could also have a negative effect on research for cancer therapeutics.In somewhat related news, the Annals of Internal Medicine is refusing to retract a large-scale study it ran in July that pointed to the lack of an association between childhood aluminum exposure through vaccination and chronic conditions, despite Kennedy's criticism. In an op-ed published earlier this month, the Health Secretary took issue with the study's design.In obesity news, biopharma darling Eli Lilly suffered a rare chink in its normally impenetrable GLP-1 armor. The first Phase III trial for oral weight loss therapy orforglipron read out last week, and the results were underwhelming, at least to Wall Street. Truist Securities wrote that the data support approval but “leaves room for competition.” This is good news for a whole host of companies, including Roche, Viking, Terns and Rhythm Pharmaceuticals, who all have weight loss pills at various stages of development.And in gene therapy, the hits just keep coming. The FDA has limited the use of bluebird bio's gene therapy Skysona to patients with cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy for whom no other therapies or stem cell donors are available, due to a heightened risk of blood cancers. This follows safety issues in gene therapy trials experienced by Allogene, and, of course, Sarepta Therapeutics. This week in ClinicaSpace, Dan Samorodnitsky explored the future of AAV technology. In this episode, Paul Fess (LaGuardia Community College) explores the connections between Martin Delany and the songwriters Joshua McCarter Simpson and Stephen Foster. Embedded in the mix of Delany's novel Blake; or, The Huts of America are several songs that invoke some of Foster's most familiar melodies, such as those associated with the songs “Oh! Susanna” and “Uncle Ned.” Digging through the archive, scholars have discovered these parodies to be the work of the relatively obscure Joshua McCarter Simpson, an activist in Ohio's Colored Conventions movement, a conductor on the underground railroad, and, with the publication of his Original Anti-Slavery Songs, the first African American to produce a songbook of original compositions. This episode examines how Delany and Simpson strategically repurpose Foster's sentimentalism-infused melodies, navigating the racial complexities of antebellum culture. While Foster aimed to soften the degrading aspects of minstrelsy, Delany and Simpson use these melodies to create a Black abolitionist discourse, challenging sentimental aesthetics. The novel's characters, like Simpson's lyrics, redefine the nostalgic longing in Foster's songs, emphasizing the harsh realities of enslaved life. Delany and Simpson employ music as a tool for political activism, crafting a counterhegemonic discourse and fostering a sense of collective resistance against enslavement. Dr. Greg Carr, associate professor of Africana Studies and chair of the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University rejoins the Building the Black Educator Pipeline Podcast to give us a history lesson on the life and legacy of Martin Delany. Dr. Carr explains why Delany is considered an icon in Black nationalist thought and contrasts him to modern-day activists.Dr. Carr and host Shayna Terrell discuss the connection to academic work in today's social movements and lay out strategies that ancestors would have used to address the crisis of education and curriculum today. Dr. Carr gives his thoughts on the movement to ban books and exclude topics from the curriculum in schools and the effort to erase parts of our history. Shayna and Dr. Carr talk about how we can get students active in engaging with these education bills across the country. They also discuss the NAACP's recent "travel advisory" to Florida, calling the state hostile to Black Americans.

Problem in Michigan's athletic department that they don't have enough attention to detail. The lesson isn't just check what you say in public; check some of these ideas when they're on their way into your head. NOTE: I erased a short bit where the panel got the Schembechler boys mixed up; Matt is the one who made dubious claims re: Anderson. To be clear, it was hundreds of likes of racist ideas, not just one tweet (though the one tweet was very bad), and once they were public it would have been a major issue for Michigan, which is in the PR business. In the break Brian explains how Twitter works to Craig. The Big Ten's contract situation: How did Kevin Warren screw this up so badly? Guy sold the rights to a game he didn't own, and promised night games in November—what was his job other than to know these things? OSU is going to host a night game vs MSU on November 11 (Michigan had the IU game just as late in the year). MSU is going to move their last home game, vs Penn State, to Ford Field on Friday night—MSU season ticket holders must be pissed? Seth: MSU's last home game is usually empty and miserable anyways. November night game solution: USC and UCLA can play them at home. And they're paying a search firm to understand if they need to pay him a bonus for a contract he didn't complete when his contract didn't say he gets one, why, because Delany got one? Brian: Executive culture is messed up—these guys are all replacement level. What's the fallout? Sam/Brian think Michigan didn't have any concessions; Seth thinks MSU horse-traded their Senior Day at Ford Field and a night game at OSU in return for an easier schedule when Michigan is going to get USC. We figured that would happen anyways.

Today, I'm joined by Brittany Delany, a dancer, choreographer, and co-director of the dance and social justice collective GROUND SERIES. We discuss the latest project from GROUND SERIES called “Free the Body,” an interactive art installation at The Coachella Valley Art Center that explores what it means to free the body within personal, cultural, social, and political settings. In our conversation, Brittany describes the inception of this project and how different elements of writing, sound, movement, and visual art were introduced. She shares what people can expect from the installation, including the various workshops the collective is hosting with local nonprofit organizations.  When Brittany found herself in a cycle of rage and frustration brought on by the pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, and the overturn of Roe v. Wade, she joined with collaborators to channel that energy into “Free the Body,” using the text Abolition. Feminism. Now as inspiration. Brittany unpacks the refuge that this project offers her and what she hopes people will take away from the experience. She also highlights ways that the collective is working to engage with local community organizations and foster restorative justice services within the Coachella Valley community.
