Author May Cobb and Showrunner Rebecca Cutter discuss the adaptation process, the appeal of small-town Texas, and their collaborative dynamic. Meeting them ahead of Season 2 was a pleasure, and I'm excited for you to hear our conversation. Let's go!

The same weekend, two of the most impressive pitching performances of the year — one from a junior at Georgia, one from a second-year Brewer. Joey Volchko punched out 15 over a complete game against Texas in the CWS opener. Jacob Misiorowski punched out 15 over a complete game against the Phillies on 95 pitches. Same number. Different level. Same underlying story about what good pitching development actually looks like. This BDH walks through both case studies in detail.Volchko in Athens — a high-upside Stanford transfer who'd been told for years to throw a four-seamer he couldn't throw. Georgia and Coach Wes Johnson got him in the lab, saw the natural cut, threw out the four-seam, made the cutter the number one, reframed the slider as a harder bullet, added a sweeper, then layered in a seam-shifted-wake sinker in the fall. They didn't change the athlete. They identified what he did best and built the repertoire around it. Result: a 15-K complete game on the biggest stage of his career, and a first-round draft profile.Misiorowski in Milwaukee — a high-walk minor leaguer two years ago, now a 105-in-the-tank big league starter throwing 95-pitch complete-game shutouts. The conversation reframes the cleanest line in modern pitching development: there is a difference between control (throwing strikes) and command (throwing strikes that play). Miz's in-zone rate is actually down. His first-pitch strike rate is up 8 points. Hitters are giving him more of the zone because they have to. The Brewers' system is the cleanest pitching development organization in baseball right now, and Misiorowski's arc is the proof. The back half opens up to the broader landscape:The Trey Turner slump — the leg-kick mechanics that have him stuck in 50/50, and why the breaking-ball whiff distance is the metric that confirms itYordan Alvarez as the actual best hitter in baseball — "Juan Soto things at Aaron Judge's size"The Aaron Judge shelf situationThe mid-season baseball tightening and the banana-peel outfield routes that came with itChristopher Sanchez's slider — average shape, elite value, because of the repertoire it lives insideA closing argument that we're watching the best baseball that's ever been playedThe throughline:The best pitching development at every level looks the same — don't fit guys into a box, find what they do best, and build the repertoire around it. Wes Johnson does it in Athens. The Brewers do it in Milwaukee. Different methods, same philosophy. This episode is the cleanest articulation of that idea Trevor and Dan have done on the pod.00:00 Intro · CWS Weekend, Two 15-K Games 01:30 Joey Volchko · 15K vs Texas in Athens 04:00 The Georgia · Wes Johnson Pitching Lab 07:30 Don't Fit Pitchers Into a Box · The Individual Build 11:30 The Four-Seam, the Cutter, the Sinker · Repertoire Construction 15:30 The 48/37 Pitch Mix · When Off-Speed Is the Fastball19:30 Beyond Nasty Stuff · The Next Layer of Pitching Development 24:30 Misiorowski · 15K vs the Phillies on 95 Pitches 28:00 Control vs Command · The Real Distinction 32:30 The Brewers as the Banner Pitching Development Org36:00 The Regression-Proof Fastball 40:00 Trey Turner · The Leg Kick and the 50/50 46:00 Aaron Judge on the Shelf · The Best Hitter Conversation49:00 Yordan Alvarez · Juan Soto Things at Aaron Judge's Size53:30 The Tightened Ball · Banana-Peel Outfield Routes 58:00 Christopher Sanchez's Slider · Why Repertoire Beats Pitch Grade1:02:00 Closing · The Best Baseball That's Ever Been Played

In this episode of Page Burners, the crew continues their journey through The Bonehunters by Steven Erikson, covering Chapters 3 and 4. The discussion explores one of the biggest questions surrounding the Malazan series: what exactly makes its storytelling feel so different from other fantasy epics? The panel dives into the series' sprawling structure, massive cast, thematic throughlines, and whether Malazan even has a true “main character.”The conversation also examines Apsalar's complicated relationship with Cotillion, the emotional fallout of possession and identity, and the tangled connections between Apsalar, Cotillion, and Cutter. Along the way, the group discusses the ever-entertaining Telorast and Curdle, the mysteries surrounding Urko, Karsa's encounter with a K'Chain Che'Malle Short-Tail, and the increasingly science-fiction-like discoveries involving Icarium and Mappo's exploration of ancient sky keeps. From character analysis and worldbuilding mysteries to theories and the future of the series, this episode is packed with speculation, laughs, and plenty of Malazan deep-dives.Next Episode: Chapters 5 & 6 of The Bonehunters.Podcast equipment used (Amazon Affiliate links):Rodecaster DuoRode PSA1+ Professional Studio ArmRode Procaster Microphone

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is by far one of the most prolific modern blues musicians and one of the few that have had crossover hit songs on rock radio. 32 years ago he released his debut album Ledbetter Heights to huge success, and remember this is the album before his timeless mainstay "Blue on Black." Featuring hit radio songs "Deja Voodoo" and "Aberdeen" it reasonated with millions of people at a time when hair metal had faded and grunge was all the rave. Now 30 years later Kenny has been on the road playing the album from start to finish and put out a re-recorded version called Ledbetter Heights (30th Anniversary Sessions). This conversation was also recorded for my morning show WAPL Mornings With Laura Lee & Cutter along with my show The Cutting Edge Countdown, so Laura joined me for the talk and Kenny has some nice words for his history with the station WAPL.

Authorities have finally caught international terrorist Charles Rane (Bruce Payne). The best thing to do is book him on a nice first-class flight to L.A. Seems like this guy needs a steak and a fun in-flight film. John Cutter (Wesley Snipes) has just accepted a new position in an anti-terrorism unit, and he is undercover on this flight. So, inevitably when this all goes bonkers quickly, Cutter will be on the case. He will also bicker with Marti (Alex Datcher) while terrorism runs rampant. It's all about priorities. Sly Delvecchio (Tom Sizemore) looms in the background. RTS deboards the plane and immediately heads to the fairgrounds with Elizabeth Hurley. Let's win her an oversized stuffed animal. Jeremy has a corndog and some funnel cake on a Ferris wheel. If there's room, he might have a beer and a bratwurst later. La-Mar makes sure to order his airline sirloin bloody. It becomes questionable. Brendt goes reverse-Commando on a plane. He also updates his turquoise earring collection. Do you think most of this film will be on a plane? You'll be betting on red if that is the case.

What if the most terrifying creature in the water… isn't hunting you—it's just making a terrible mistake? In this episode of The Box of Oddities, Kat returns from a sun-soaked (and slightly overcooked) girls cruise, only to dive straight into a story that's equal parts cryptid legend and biological nightmare. Along the murky banks of Papua New Guinea's Sepik River, villagers whisper about a mysterious attacker known only as *“The Ball Cutter.”* Men wade into the water… and emerge in agony—or not at all. The bite marks? Disturbingly human. The attacks? Precise. Targeted. Unnervingly consistent. But what begins as folklore takes a sharp turn into reality when researchers uncover the truth behind the legend: a powerful, invasive fish with human-like teeth and a taste for… well… unfortunate confusion. It's a story of ecology gone sideways, mistaken identity, and why you might want to think twice before taking a dip in unfamiliar waters. Then, in true Box of Oddities fashion, things take a turn—from terrifying to wildly hilarious—as Kat's cruise companion Erica joins us for a Thing in the Middle you won't forget. From bird-induced near-death hikes to dog-hunting in the Dominican Republic and a near-mutiny during a shark excursion, it's a chaotic highlight reel of “Most Kat Things Ever.” And if that's not enough, Kat brings us a jaw-dropping historical tale from the Caribbean: a hurricane, an earthquake, and a tsunami that literally picked up a U.S. naval warship and dropped it 300 feet inland. The unbelievable true story of the USS Monongahela and the 1867 disaster that reshaped an island—and possibly altered the course of U.S. history. *In this episode:* * The horrifying truth behind the “Ball Cutter” river attacks * A fish with human teeth and a very unfortunate diet * Cruise chaos, shark swims, and peak Kat behavior * The 1867 Caribbean tsunami that stranded a warship on land * History, humor, and just enough nightmare fuel to keep you out of the water Subscribe, follow, and join the Order of Freaks for more strange, fascinating, and hilariously unsettling stories every week. Dr. Maloof explains why existing pitch tagging data from popular systems (TrackMan, Synergy, and MLB's StatCast) are often inconsistent, inaccurate, and difficult to use for data analysis.Together, we discuss:Why MLB's pitch classifier is trained on what pitchers call their own pitches (and why that's a problem for hitters and analysts)How Dr. Maloof analyzed nearly 5 million college pitches using a “blank slate” approach inspired by geologyThe “color wheel” analogy: why pitches within a category (fastballs, breaking balls, changeups) exist on a continuous spectrum with no natural boundariesHow Princeton's staff uses reclassified data for scouting, pitch design, and pitching machine programmingPitch tunneling: what it is, how they measure it, and how they're teaching it to pitchersThe role of arm slot, biometrics, and what's next for this researchRead Dr. Maloof's article on pitch tagging: How to Classify a Pitchhttps://medium.com/sabr-tooth-tigers/how-to-classify-a-pitch-a4805ce35082Connect with Patrick Jones Baseball:On X: @pjonesbaseball

NOTE: This was released in May of 2025, but due to life being what it is, I didn't get to finish the final two parts of the episode. So I am rereleasing this episode this week, and the next two weeks I will release the following two episodes. I have now officially backed myself in a corner and I simply MUST finish the episodes now.  It would start with a headache, a fever, maybe a funny tummy. But soon enough your knee would give out, or your arm would hang limp, or you would struggle to breathe. You'd be taken to the hospital, where you'd get your diagnosis - polio. If you survived, you ran the risk of doing so with paralyzed limbs, struggling to walk on bulky leg braces. Your parents would be terrified they might lose you, and so everybody wanted the one thing that could stop all of this - a vaccine.

Guest: Paul Dalley, aka Seaplane Paul Hosts: Dave Homewood Recorded: 10th of January 2026 Released: 1st of February 2026 Duration: 3 hour 52 minutes 49 seconds In this extra-length Wings Over New Zealand Show “Flying Boat Month” episode Dave Homewood speaks with Paul Dalley, who grew up with aviation around him thanks to his grandfather Ian Henry, a well-known propeller maker. Paul talks about learning to fly, his adventures flying his Piper Cub in Japan while running a language school there, and flying air displays there with fellow Kiwi pilot Robert Fry and others. He talks about flying in Australia where he’d planned to buy a tourism flying business and how things changed. And flying in Papua New Guinea. And then he ended up purchasing a Lake Buccaneer in New Zealand and he took it up to Vanuatu and achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a flying boat pilot in the Pacific, just like Jake Cutter in one of his favourite childhood television shows, Tales of the Gold Monkey, and the 1992 film Porco Rosso. Paul has some wonderful adventure stories and ells of some seriously scary moments in the air, in Japan and in the Pacific. He has real insight into the joys of flight too. So sit back and listen to the stories of Seaplane Paul. Above: The golden sands of a tropical Pacific beach, and Paul Dalley’s Lake Buccaneer flying boat.
