Sebastian Wernicke is a leading expert in data and AI strategy who has spent more than 20 years helping organizations—from startups to Fortune 500 companies—turn data into real-world transformation. Sebastian's work stands out because of his core belief that the power of data isn't unlocked through better technology—it's unlocked through better thinking. Through his consulting, speaking, and three TED Talks with over 5 million views, he's helped leaders rethink how they use data to drive meaningful change. His new book, Data Inspired, makes the case that the future belongs not to organizations that are merely data-driven, but to those that build a true culture of inquiry. In this episode we discuss the following: Data doesn't convince people. People convince people. Sebastian's fuel savings example captures this perfectly. A 20% improvement felt like a win to Sebastian, but like an accusation to the employee. So Sebastian repositioned it—not as a “big fix,” but as a gradual, step-by-step pilot—making it feel natural and allowing everyone to save face. And an underappreciate tool Sebastian uses to systematically think through motivations and constraints is checklist. What especially helps companies make the best use of data is psychological safety. Without it, the highest-paid opinion wins, and the data gets ignored. Data is more like an MRI than a clear cut verdict, so it's important to get people's perspectives because we can all look at the same data and see a different truth. If we want to use data more, we have to understand people better.

How Did Donna Adelson Allegedly Convince Herself She Was Protecting Her Family?

The behavioral question at the center of the Dan Markel case isn't how a murder-for-hire gets organized. It's how a grandmother, a former schoolteacher, a woman who spent decades projecting devotion to her family allegedly convinced herself that orchestrating the killing of her grandchildren's father was the right thing to do.The psychological framework is narcissistic at its core. Donna Adelson allegedly built an internal narrative over decades where her needs became moral law. Boundaries became attacks. Conflict became persecution. Dan Markel — a Florida State law professor fighting for custody of his own children — was allegedly recast not as a person but as an obstacle. Through that distorted logic, every step she took allegedly felt reasonable. Even righteous. Self-deception became a shield. Entitlement became a compass. And a family was allegedly destroyed by the person who believed she was saving it.That psychology doesn't exist in a vacuum. Five people are now in prison for Markel's murder. Charlie Adelson and Donna Adelson are both convicted and serving life. The hitmen are locked up. The go-between is locked up. Prosecutors have named Wendi Adelson and her father Harvey as unindicted co-conspirators — in open court, across multiple trials. After Donna's conviction, the State Attorney said decisions on additional charges were coming in weeks. Months of silence have followed.Wendi testified under limited immunity at every trial — a deal that only holds if she told the truth. Harvey was caught at an airport with one-way tickets to a non-extradition country. A pending Florida appeal could reshape the legal landscape for everyone still exposed.A defense attorney and former prosecutor examines what the silence means — whether a prosecutor going quiet after a major conviction signals active investigation or a trail that's gone cold. The behavioral and legal threads in this case run in parallel, and both lead back to the same unresolved question: who else was part of this, and will they ever face a courtroom?Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Dopey Film Festival Tickets: https://buytickets.at/thedopeyfoundation/2216905 Patreon: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Long Summary This week's Total Replay features Dopey Episode 30, originally recorded in the Lower East Side apartment when Chris and Dave were still figuring out what the show would become. Dave opens by explaining why Episode 29 won't be replayed. It was Ray Brown's first appearance on Dopey, but Ray has repeatedly requested that his early appearances remain offline. Dave pays tribute to Ray and plugs the upcoming Dopey Recovery Film Festival before reflecting on how strange it is to revisit these early episodes. The episode begins with Chris bringing his then-girlfriend Karen onto the show. Karen and Chris discuss meeting on Tinder, their awkward early dates, Chris almost ghosting her, and the bizarre process of figuring out whether they were actually boyfriend and girlfriend. Dave relentlessly interrogates both of them about their relationship while Karen patiently tolerates the nonsense. Karen reveals she had already listened to Dopey before Chris realized it and shares what it was like hearing some of Chris's wilder stories for the first time. The conversation includes a hilarious story about Karen drunkenly inviting Chris over, only for him to arrive and find her passed out on the toilet. The show then veers into classic early Dopey territory: recovery debates, methadone arguments, active addicts, prison stories, and discussions about whether people on maintenance medications should qualify at meetings. The centerpiece of the episode is Chris's legendary LSD story: After relapsing while working at a sober living house, Chris begins ordering drugs from the Silk Road. He buys heroin, cocaine, and some incredibly strong LSD. While attempting to maintain the appearance of sobriety, he takes acid during a screening of The Wolf of Wall Street with his girlfriend Tina. By the time they return home, Chris is tripping hard and realizes his girlfriend is going to notice. His solution? Convince her he's experiencing HPPD (Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder) brought on by meditation. Chris leads a meditation session, then pretends he's suddenly having an LSD flashback. Initially Tina believes him. Eventually guilt gets the better of him and he confesses. Then he immediately tries to convince her he didn't actually take acid after all, causing her to question her own reality before finally admitting the truth again. The story ends with Tina kicking him out while Chris, deep into the trip, worries less about the relationship and more about whether she'll make him carry home a gigantic cast-iron piggy bank he had previously given her as a gift. The episode closes with a discussion about recovery, why addicts laugh at horrifying things they've done, and how the absurdity of addiction becomes funny only after enough distance and healing. A bonafide dopey classic! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Send us Fan MailWhen you stop chasing your dreams, something unexpected happens. Listen to this 2-minute episode to learn more. Watch the original video: https://youtu.be/cE3HecLufGQOne of the most powerful spiritual lessons I have learned is not to chase what you think is meant for you. Instead, align with it. I used to exhaust myself trying to make things happen. Convince. Prove. Perform. Fix. Repeat. But my messengers showed me something deeper. When I forced something, I felt anxiety. Yet each time I surrendered, I felt peace. I realized that Peace is the compass. Look at your choices and decisions: If they bring anxiety, it is not alignment. One messenger showed me that misalignment feels like walking on eggshells, while alignment offers a firm path of acceptance and authenticity. Trust that what leaves you was never yours. When you stop chasing, you pause. And within that sacred space of stillness, what is divinely guided can and will find you. Align with the Divine and see how your life will change.Check out Candice's website at https://candicesanderson.com

Nikki St. Paul came into Jess's world when her business couldn't logically justify the investment. She deleted the message saying she was in. Jess had already screenshotted it. Muhaha. That moment .. the pull-back, the fear winning for about 24 hours, is where this conversation starts. And what happened in the months after is exactly what Jess talks about but rarely gets to show in real time: identity shifting not through strategy, but through the decision to move anyway, even when the obstacles are literal. Including a bank fraud team that needed to be convinced on a five-hour time difference that a near $30K wire transfer was not a scam.In this episode, Jess sits down with Nikki to trace the full arc .. from a low-ticket micro offer entry point, through Quarter Carnage, through the Ascension tier, to launching her own mastermind and selling out VIP spots for her live event in 48 hours. Not because she had the evidence or the revenue to justify each step. Because she stopped letting logic run the decision. What you'll hear: what the resistance actually looks and feels like at each stage (including nausea), why every obstacle that showed up was the identity work, not a sign to stop, what embodiment actually means when you stop treating it as a concept and start living it as a standard, and what Nikki would say to anyone sitting on the fence right now.Spoiler: she's very direct about it.

Why You Keep Repeating the Same Patterns | Day 4: The Dominance Blueprint

Sports Motivation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 21, 2026 16:59

DAY 4 of The Dominance Blueprint. Everybody says they want self-mastery. Everybody says they want change. Everybody says they want the truth. Until the truth becomes uncomfortable. In this episode, we talk about why awareness is so difficult… and why most people stay trapped in the same emotional loops, habits, fears, and patterns for their entire lives. Because the patterns sabotaging your progress do not want to be seen. They will distract you. Justify themselves. Convince you to avoid the truth. Convince you to stay unconscious. This is why people avoid conversations. Avoid data. Avoid accountability. Avoid silence. Avoid themselves. And even when they KNOW what they're doing is hurting them… they still keep doing it. Why? Because true growth requires you to sit with what your awareness reveals. That is difficult. That creates resistance. That creates discomfort. But the resistance is not proof you're failing. The resistance is proof you're finally getting close to the truth. In this episode, I break down: Why awareness is painful Why most people unconsciously avoid the truth How emotional patterns protect themselves from exposure Why self-help and positive thinking fail long term What "hypnotic rhythm" really is How awareness slows life down enough for you to finally see the pattern Why awareness is the foundation of Dominance How awareness allows you to reclaim your true expression underneath the conditioning I also share lessons from my NFL experience and explain why veterans make the game look slow — not because the game changed, but because their awareness did. That same awareness can be developed internally. The more aware you become, the more clearly you begin to see: the masks the protectors the fears the conditioning the patterns that are standing between you and your true self And once you can truly see them… you can finally begin changing them. Tomorrow is the final episode of the series. I'm going to show you how to practically rebuild your internal world the same way you would rebuild your body in the gym. A systematic process for building elite awareness, retraining your patterns, and taking authority over your internal world. That is where Dominance truly begins.

1964: The Breaking Point…

The Hidden History of Texas

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2026 7:55

1964: The Breaking Point...How a Texas President Helped Reshape American Politics Forever There are years in American history that feel less like moments… and more like fault lines. 1964 was one of them. It was the year the old political order began to crack. Not overnight. Not all at once. But in ways we are still living with today. And at the center of it all stood a Texan. Lyndon B. Johnson Growing up in Texas, Lyndon Johnson was never just another historical figure to some families. People remembered him. In my own family, my great-aunts grew up around Johnson City during the years when Lyndon Johnson was still simply “Lyndon.” Before the presidency. Before Vietnam. Before history turned him into something larger and far more complicated. And that's important to remember. Because Johnson understood Texas. He understood the South. And perhaps more than anyone else in Washington, he understood political power. Especially how to use it. By 1964, America was already under enormous strain. The images coming across television screens were becoming impossible to ignore. Black students being screamed at while trying to attend school.Peaceful protesters attacked with dogs and fire hoses.Freedom Riders beaten.Church bombings.Demonstrations erupting across the South. For many Americans, the Civil Rights Movement was becoming not just a regional issue but a moral one. And television changed everything. For the first time in American history, millions of people could witness these confrontations in their living rooms almost as they happened. The country was being forced to look at itself. John F. Kennedy had moved cautiously on civil rights during his presidency. But after Kennedy's assassination in November of 1963, Lyndon Johnson inherited not only the presidency… but the unfinished battle over civil rights legislation. And Johnson knew something many younger Americans today may not fully appreciate: The bill would not pass simply because it was morally right. It would pass only if someone could force it through Congress. And Lyndon Johnson knew Congress better than almost anyone alive. Before becoming president, Johnson had served as Senate Majority Leader. He understood personalities, pressure, favors, intimidation, timing, all the invisible machinery of power. Historians would later call it “The Johnson Treatment.” He could flatter you.Threaten you.Charm you.Corner you.Convince you. Sometimes all within the same conversation. And in 1964, Johnson unleashed that political machinery behind what became the: Civil Rights Act Today, most Americans remember the Civil Rights Act as inevitable. It wasn't. The legislation faced fierce opposition, especially from Southern Democrats who viewed it as federal overreach into state affairs and Southern society. For decades, many Southern politicians had held enormous power in Congress. Committee chairmanships. Senate influence. Institutional seniority. But the country was changing. And Johnson understood that history was moving whether Congress wanted it to or not. So he pushed. Hard. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed segregation in public accommodations and prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Supporters viewed it as one of the most important moral and constitutional advances in modern American history. Opponents viewed it as a dangerous expansion of federal authority. And beneath the political arguments, something deeper was beginning to happen. The old Democratic coalition, the one that had held together since the days of Franklin D. Roosevelt, was beginning to fracture. Then came the election of 1964. And this is where the political story becomes truly fascinating. The Republican nominee that year was: Barry Goldwater Goldwater was a conservative from Arizona. He opposed the Civil Rights Act, not necessarily because he supported segregation, but because he argued parts of the law violated constitutional limits on federal power. That distinction mattered to Goldwater. But politically, something much larger was unfolding. Goldwater lost the election badly nationwide. Lyndon Johnson crushed him at the national level. But then something unexpected happened. Goldwater carried several Deep South states. States that had been Democratic strongholds for generations. For many observers at the time, it looked strange. Temporary, even. But in hindsight, historians now recognize it as one of the first major warning signs that the political map of the South was beginning to change. Slowly. Unevenly. But undeniably. Now, none of this happened in a single election. The South did not suddenly wake up Republican in 1964. That transformation would take decades. Many Southern Democrats remained loyal to the party well into the 1970s and even the 1980s. Local courthouse politics, state offices, and regional traditions still mattered enormously. But the foundation had shifted. The old alliances were weakening. And the issues reshaping American politics were no longer simply economic. Increasingly, they were becoming cultural. Constitutional. Regional. Moral. And perhaps no one understood the price of what had happened better than Lyndon Johnson himself. According to one famous account, after signing the Civil Rights Act, Johnson reportedly told an aide: “We have lost the South for a generation.” Whether the quote is perfectly remembered or not, the political reality behind it proved remarkably accurate. The transformation had begun. In the next chapter of this story, we move into one of the most chaotic years in modern American history:   Assassinations.Protests.Riots.The Democratic Convention in Chicago. And the rise of a new political message that would reshape conservative politics for decades to come: “Law and order.” And once again… Texas and the South would stand near the center of the storm. The Storm Had You Convinced, That's When God Moved

Morning Prayer with Pastor Sean Pinder

Have you ever been in a storm so fierce, so relentless, so overwhelming that it began to convince you? Convince you that it was not going to end. Convince you that God was not listening. Convince you that this time — there was no way out. I want you to stop right now and receive this truth — because God has never once moved on anyone's behalf BEFORE the storm reached its worst. He always moves at the moment the storm says it has won.Think about the disciples in Mark chapter 4. The waves were beating into the ship. The ship was filling with water. Every natural sign said they were going to die. And at that exact moment — when the storm had convinced them it was over — Jesus arose and said three words that stopped everything."And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm." — Mark 4:39 (KJV)Let these words resonate within your heart today. Jesus did not speak BEFORE the storm peaked. He spoke when the storm had everyone convinced. Take comfort in this — the storm that has been working hardest to convince you that God has forgotten you is the very storm that is about to hear His voice. He is not late. He is not absent. He is waiting for the moment of maximum impossibility — because that is when His glory is most undeniable."I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills — from whence cometh my help? My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth." — Psalm 121:1-2 (KJV)Understand this — David wrote Psalm 121 from the middle of his storm. Not after it ended. IN it. And he lifted his eyes — not because the storm was over, but because he knew Who was watching. The same God who made heaven and earth is watching over YOUR storm right now. He sees every wave. He hears every wind. And at exactly the right moment — He will arise and speak. And when He speaks, your storm will have no choice but to obey.May this teaching fill your heart with peace and remind you that God always moves at the moment the storm says it has won. Remember — it is only when we lift our eyes in the middle of the storm that we discover God was already moving on our behalf. Thank you for joining me today. Subscribe for daily teachings, morning prayer broadcasts, and live services. May your day be filled with the great calm that only Jesus can give.

Can Keith Teare Convince Jonathan Rauch That AI Is Benign? That Was the Week, Special Edition

“The dangers are human, not AI. What's dangerous is what a human does with AI, not what the AI does itself. In fact, even the idea that there is such a thing as the AI in itself is a mistake.” — Keith Teare I'm in Korea this week. So rather than doing a traditional one-on-one That Was the Week tech summary, Keith Teare and I are trying something different. We invited Jonathan Rauch — Brookings Institution senior fellow, serial author and one of the most rigorous minds in Washington — onto the show to discuss AI. Rauch had a simple mission. He wanted to find out why Keith Teare is just about the only person in the universe who believes that AI is benign. Jon had five buckets of doom to dump on Keith: labour market disruption, political upheaval, mental health and cognition, malicious actors, and the biggest daddy of all — AI developing consciousness, setting its own agenda, and killing everyone (even Keith). But Keith maintained his Yorkshire stoicism under intense scrutiny from the analogue Rauch machine. AI is a word-counting machine, he explained. Large language models train on words, not experience. They split words into a probabilistic graph of correlations. When you ask a question, a large statistical engine fires, word by word. In that sense, he says, AI is no cleverer than a calculator. The idea that it has awareness, consciousness, or a plan is mythological. What's dangerous is what a human does with AI, not what AI does itself. The dangers, he says, are human. Jon wasn't entirely reassured (his Brookings brand is scepticism, after all). What worries him most is that humans will handle these technologies irresponsibly. On that, he and Keith agree. The short-term labour disruption will be significant. White-collar service provision — legal, accounting, junior consulting — is already going. Jobs will go too. Work, Keith insists, will not. But nobody in politics is having the conversation about what comes next. Not JD. Not AOC. Only Keith and Jon. Five Takeaways •       AI Is a Word-Counting Machine: Keith's Core Argument: Large language models train on words and only words. They split those words into a probabilistic graph — how close is word A to word B? When you ask a question, a large statistical engine fires, producing output word by word. There is no awareness. There is no consciousness. There is no plan. The idea that such a system could develop its own agenda is mythological. It's no cleverer than a calculator. It's just a very big, very fast calculator. Rauch's counter: the brain is also just dumb neurons. We get emergence from dumb neurons. Keith's reply: what the AI can do is constrained by what humans allow it to do. The agency is human. •       Doomerism as Business Model: Before engaging with any specific AI doom argument, Keith signals a prior: whenever there is ambiguity in a major technological change, a business model emerges to monetize doubt. It was true of nuclear power. It was true of climate change. It is true of AI. This doesn't mean the fears are groundless — they wouldn't sell if they weren't reasonable. But it means they should be approached with prior scepticism. The doom argument works precisely because AI genuinely contains possible negative outcomes. The business model packages and amplifies those possibilities beyond their actual probability. •       The Guardrails Are Human: Keith's metaphor: AI sits in a prison where humans decide what the doors are. If you give it access to email, it can email. If you don't, it can't. It cannot take actions it has not been permitted to take. The word “guardrails” is commonly used, and it's apt: the constraints on what AI can do are entirely under human control. The word output is the statistical engine — that's not controllable. But its ability to act on words is highly constrained. The danger is not what AI does. It is what humans choose to allow AI to do. •       Jobs vs Work: The Labour Disruption Argument: Rauch's young friends in junior consulting are watching their jobs go in real time. Keith distinguishes between jobs — paid labour — and work, which is closer to effort and creative agency. Jobs can go. Work, he argues, will not — humans will always be reinterpreting the future they want and working to make it happen. But the short-term disruption will be significant: white-collar service provision (legal, accounting, consulting), teaching, driving. The wealth creation AI enables could supplement the end of paid labour. But no one in government is having that conversation. •       Rauch's Verdict: Clarified, Not Reassured: After fifty minutes with Keith Teare, Jonathan Rauch reaches a considered position: his worst fear — that AI becomes an autonomous engine of anti-human malfeasance — is unlikely to happen unless humans make it happen. His residual concern: that humans will not handle these technologies as maturely as one could wish. He's not optimistic about political systems that are already too rigid, too partisan, and too dysfunctional to adjust as they did to the industrialization of the late nineteenth century. On that, he and Keith agree. Nobody knows. Not Keith. Not Andrew. And, despite his brilliance, not Jonathan Rauch. About the Guests Keith Teare is a British-American entrepreneur, investor, and publisher of the That Was the Week newsletter. If you walk into sales conversations feeling like you have to convince people, this episode is going to change how you approach your entire sales process. In this episode of The Real Truth About Business podcast, I'm sharing a powerful mindset shift from a recent Back Pocket Insights conversation that directly impacts your business strategy and revenue growth. This is for service-based entrepreneurs who feel like they're constantly handling objections, over-explaining their offers, or struggling to close sales. After 9 years of experience, I can tell you this isn't about better scripts or more tactics. It's about how you show up in the sales conversation. Inside this episode, I break down why assuming the sale and holding boundaries with your offers will increase your conversion rate and position you as a stronger CEO in your business. What You'll Learn:Why going into sales calls expecting objections lowers your conversion rateHow to shift your sales process from convincing to leadingThe impact of assuming the sale on your business strategyHow holding boundaries strengthens your pricing strategy and positioningWhy confidence and clarity drive faster revenue growthHow to lead sales conversations with authority instead of hesitationEpisode Highlights:[00:00] Introduction: The common mistake in sales conversations[01:30] Why assuming objections changes how you show up[03:00] The shift to assuming the sale and leading the conversation[05:00] How energy and confidence impact buyer decisions[07:00] Presenting facts vs. asking permission in sales[09:00] Holding boundaries and closing with authorityKey Takeaways:You're Walking Into Sales Conversations Already LosingHere's what I see constantly. Business owners preparing for sales calls by thinking about how they're going to handle objections. After 9 years of working with service-based entrepreneurs, I can tell you this is one of the fastest ways to lower your conversion rate. When you assume objections, you show up differently. Your energy shifts. Your language changes. You start asking questions like “what's holding you back?” before they've even expressed hesitation. And that immediately puts you in a position of trying to convince instead of lead.Assume the Sale and Lead With AuthorityThe shift is simple but powerful. Go into the conversation assuming they're already a yes.Not in an aggressive way. In a grounded, confident way.Instead of trying to uncover objections that may not even exist, you're presenting facts. You're guiding them through what working together looks like. You're helping them make a decision, not pushing them into one.Inside the Focused Visionary Framework, this directly impacts your Sales pillar. Your role is not to persuade. It's to lead.Your Energy Sets the Tone for the Entire Sales ProcessSales is not just about what you say. It's about how you say it.When you show up confident, clear, and direct, your buyer feels that. It creates safety. It creates trust. It makes decision-making easier. When you show up hesitant, unsure, or overly accommodating, your buyer feels that too. And it slows everything down. This is why your positioning and pricing strategy matter so much. If you're not fully bought into your offer, it will show up in your sales conversations.Boundaries Create Better Clients and Faster DecisionsHolding boundaries with your offers is not about being rigid. It's about being clear.Clear on who it's for. Clear on how it works. Clear on what the next step is.When you blur those boundaries, you create confusion. And confusion slows down your pipeline and your revenue growth. When you hold them, you attract the right clients faster. The ones who are ready. The ones who trust your process. You Don't Need to Convince. You Need to GuideThis is the biggest shift. You are not responsible for making someone say yes. You are responsible for helping them decide. That means showing up with clarity. Presenting the facts. Holding the container. And letting them meet you there. That's what increases your conversion rate. That's what simplifies your sales process. And that's what creates sustainable business growth.Resources MentionedSubscribe to Back Pocket Insights for FREEBook a CEO Strategy Call Learn more about The Missing Piece IntensiveLearn more about The Focused Visionary AcceleratorDownload the FREE Lead and Conversion TrackerSubscribe to the Sunday Morning Brew NewsletterAbout the Host:Michelle DeNio is a business strategist based in Sarasota, Florida, specializing in helping service-based entrepreneurs break through revenue plateaus using her Focused Visionary Framework. BONUS: Why Your Plan Is Lying to You — #NoEstimates, Throughput, and the Superstition of Project Management This episode is a cross-post from The EBFC Show, Felipe Engineer-Manriquez's podcast exploring Lean and Agile in construction. In this conversation, Felipe interviews Vasco about the #NoEstimates movement, throughput-based planning, and why traditional project management is still stuck in the middle ages of managing creative work. The Human Side of Scrum That the Scrum Guide Doesn't Cover "When you go into a daily meeting and you start looking at the people in that room, maybe they are the exact same people that were there yesterday, but the team is totally different. Somebody might have had a bad night's sleep, somebody might have had an argument with their spouse. These are human beings. These are not machines that you can just distribute work to."   Vasco's path to agile coaching started with a realization that most practitioners eventually reach: the problems in software development aren't technological. They're about people — getting agreements, sharing information at the right time, making the collective brain of a team actually function. The Scrum Guide gives you organizing principles — how many meetings, who's in them — but it says almost nothing about the real-time feedback cycle between humans that makes or breaks a team. That's why the Scrum Master role exists: to be the lubricant for human interactions, to break down complex ideas into items the collective mind can process. It's the piece that makes Scrum work, and it's the piece that's hardest to teach. From Project Manager to #NoEstimates — The Bet That Changed Everything "The PM wanted 15 items per sprint, and the team said 'yeah, we can do 15.' I said, this is not gonna happen. The team had been delivering between five and eight items per sprint. I said, I'm gonna be positive — I'm gonna say seven. And no surprise, by the end of the sprint, they delivered seven."   Vasco started as a project manager — and not the easy certification kind. He went through IPMA, which means six months of training, a four-hour written exam, and an expert interview, just for the entry level. Planning and estimating was the job. Then he ran his first Scrum project, specifically to prove it couldn't work. By the second month, he couldn't understand how anything else could work. The team delivered something to show every single sprint — something that never happened with traditional project management. The turning point came when he made a bet with a product manager: the PM needed 15 items per sprint, the team committed to 15, but historical throughput was 5-8 items. Reality delivered seven. That moment crystallized the #NoEstimates insight: we can't fight reality, but we can choose which seven items to deliver. Reality Is a Bitch — Why Linear Predictive Planning Fails "Never believe the plan. Or as in Scarface — never get high on your own supply. It's so unbelievable how project managers still today believe their freaking plans."   At Nokia, Vasco managed a program of 500 people across 100 teams on four continents. No way to get everyone in a room. So he tracked system-level throughput — features delivered to integration per week. Six months into a twelve-month project, the data said they'd be at least six months late. He told the program manager: cut scope now. The program manager did what every PMI-trained program manager does — sent an email asking all 100 teams if they'd deliver on time. Every single team said yes. Nobody wants to be first to admit they're late. Twelve months in, they discovered they were six months late. The project got canceled. 500 people, millions of euros, all because somebody believed the plan. Linear predictive planning is useful for exploring what might be possible if nothing goes wrong. It is not reality. The only tool that reflects reality is throughput — the number of items completed per unit of time. Earned Value Management — George Orwell at His Best "It's not earned, it's spent. It's not value, it's cost. It's not management, it's just observation. Monty Python could not have come up with a better name."   Felipe shares a story that mirrors the absurdity: an industrial project with a dedicated 35-person earned value management department. Before the meeting even started, the department head announced, "Let's all acknowledge that earned value management is more an art than a science." Their charts were made up, the contractor's charts were made up, and the goal of the meeting was to agree that the project would finish on time — regardless of what any data said. This is where traditional project management ends up when it disconnects from throughput: a $30 million scope addition with zero additional time, defended by charts that a mediocre attorney can invalidate in the first week of litigation. Felipe knows — he spent a year being cross-examined by forensic schedulers whose full-time job is proving that construction schedules are fiction. One Small Experiment to Test #NoEstimates "Never convince anyone. Convince yourself. Once you're convinced, whatever other people say, it doesn't really matter because you're not gonna take them seriously anyway."   Here's how to validate throughput-based planning with your own data: take the last 10 sprints (or periods). Calculate the average throughput and control limits from the first five. Then check whether the next five sprints fall within that range. They will. If you're in software and using Jira, you already have this data. You don't need anyone's permission. You don't need to change anything. Just look at what your team actually delivers versus what they planned to deliver. The gap between those two numbers is the gap between superstition and reality. Because most of my audience prefers Entitled Parents stories of Reddit, I tend to just stick with reading the r/EntitleParents Top Posts of All Time. The Chancellor will deliver the annual Mais lecture today and is expected to focus on closer alignment with the EU, AI and improving Britain's economic geography ('levelling up' in all but name). While her comments on Europe might gain the most headlines, we're more curious about what she will say over AI – given the current geopolitical context. Given the energy requirements of AI, the Iran crisis has only further exposed the holes in Britain's energy policy – can Rachel Reeves convince Ed Miliband to adapt his policies? And is this about the Chancellor's political headroom as much as the economic?Plus: President Zelensky is in town to sign a defence pact with the UK, while Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yusuf are expected to give their final speeches in the Scottish Parliament before standing down as MSPs. Tim Shipman and Michael Simmons join Patrick Gibbons to reflect on their legacies.Produced by Patrick Gibbons.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts.
