Whether it's the government, international organisations, higher education, or the media, one of the defining dynamics of the social media age is the deteriorating trust in public institutions. It's extraordinary, really. At a time when humans are on the whole wealthier, healthier, and more dominant than at any other time in our species' history, we're more distrustful of the institutions that are supposed to serve us. Saturday Mornings is usually a monetary policy-free zone, and I promise to mostly keep it that way for now. But it was pretty remarkable at the close of play last night to see an announcement from the Finance Minister about the Chair of the Reserve Bank. Neil Quigley had resigned, effective immediately, following further revelations about his handling of former Governor Adrian Orr's departure. Nicola Willis confirmed to Newstalk ZB that if Quigley hadn't offered his resignation, she'd have asked for it. I don't expect everyone to follow all of the Reserve Bank dramas. But the long and short of it is that former Governor Adrian Orr got in a dispute with the government over the bank's funding. It turned into a showdown of sorts, the Reserve Bank Board raised concerns with him about his conduct (some of which he disputed), and after taking leave for a few days he ultimately resigned. But instead of being absolutely transparent about the dispute and what had actually happened, the RBNZ Chair Neil Quigley told media that Orr had resigned for “personal reasons”. If this was just some rando then no harm no foul. But Adrian Orr was the Governor of the Reserve Bank, one of the most powerful public servants in the country. His pen stroke and the decisions of his Monetary Policy Committee could be the difference between thousands or hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs or homes. Like many journalists, I didn't buy the “personal reasons” explanation and felt we all deserved to know more detail about what had actually happened. Ater all, this wasn't a private company. The Reserve Bank serves us. After Neil Quigley's explanation, and after the Reserve Bank declined for Adrian Orr to be interviewed, I even went to the extreme length of sending him a letter at his home asking him to front. It's something I'd almost never do, but the public deserved an explanation. And it's taken until now and a ruling from the ombudsman for us to get the full story. I think there are lessons in this for all of us who work in jobs that purport to serve the public. In my role, I think about trust a lot. And look, I know this is very different to the Reserve Bank, much lower stakes, but I had the chance to reflect on my own work this week, and tried to lean into the spirit of introspection and openness. I was on a podcast, re_covering, in which Newstalk ZB's Frank Ritchie asks journalists to reflect on a story they covered. I didn't choose one which I'd absolutely nailed. Instead, I reflected on my five years as TVNZ's US Correspondent, and on my surprise at the first election of Donald Trump. As I said on re_covering, the fact so many of us were so shocked by the result (including Trump!) shows I and the rest of the news media covering that election had done a massively insufficient job of reflecting the scale of the anger and dissatisfaction with the status quo in the US. That election changed the world. Ultimately, I hope reflecting on my surprise will make me more sceptical of conventional wisdom, and better at my job today. Humans are fallible. We all make mistakes. But the Reserve Bank episode demonstrates the best thing a public institution can do to protect its reputation is not try and protect its reputation. Just admit when you got things wrong. Admit things that make you look bad. Learn lessons the hard way. Convince the public you have nothing to hide by showing us you have nothing to hide. This is a link post. This is a personal essay about my failed attempt to convince effective altruists to become socialists. I started as a convinced socialist who thought EA ignored the 'root causes' of poverty by focusing on charity instead of structural change. After studying sociology and economics to build a rigorous case for socialism, the project completely backfired as I realized my political beliefs were largely psychological coping mechanisms. Here are the key points: Understanding the "root cause" of a problem doesn't necessarily lead to better solutions - Even if capitalism causes poverty, understanding "dynamics of capitalism" won't necessarily help you solve it Abstract sociological theories are mostly obscurantist bullshit - Academic sociology suffers from either unrealistic mathematical models or vague, unfalsifiable claims that don't help you understand or change the world The world is better understood as misaligned incentives rather than coordinated oppression - Most social [...] --- First published: August 10th, 2025 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/AcPw55oF3reBiW4FX/of-marx-and-moloch-how-my-attempt-to-convince-effective Linkpost URL:https://honestsignals.substack.com/p/of-marx-and-moloch-or-my-misguided --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.

Nick and Jonathan discuss the Guardians' push to be a playoff team, and they get into the latest financial accusation against Shohei Ohtani.
In a lot of my work, I talk about the Victim/Aggressor/Savior/Martyr cycle. It seems that this dynamic is coming up to be seen and defined again.Mostly, I have spoken about this cycle in how it is experienced by individuals in their normal life experience, and what they can do to step out of it. But recently, I have been making music, and much of the music I am making is inspired by lineages that many consider to be oppressed, subjected to genocide, and exploited. When writing the lyrics for these particular songs, I found that I had to get past a massive wall of "victim/aggressor." For example, lyrics in rap music will often illustrate the wall of “victim/aggressor” in many different iterations. As I looked at that wall, I saw how the music industry has used it to maintain people in a state of disempowerment. A shrunken awareness, due to a belief that they are powerless over their circumstances because they are an oppressed people, results in their free will choices being made from a less than ideal view point. This made me curious. I mean, why keep a certain faction of the world population in a state of disempowerment? Why spend billions of dollars to target these people and make them think they are powerless and the children of slaves, exile, oppression, and exploitation? That is the bit where I want to shine some light. Our awareness and focus are much more powerful these days, and I am thinking that if we can spot the wall that is created for powerful people - our people on Earth - we can start disassembling this illusion of disempowerment. Why is that important? This is a question that seems redundant. However, when we look behind it, we can see that not everyone on Earth is keen on taking their power back and becoming a sovereign being. If we look too closely, the illusion of being oppressed may crash, and peoples around the world might no longer be kept under chains of their own programs and ideologies. Yes, some actually prefer this experience, and that is a part of this that presents challenges in moving forward to a high-frequency high-caliber population on Earth. The reason I see this tremendous effort to keep these sections of society oppressed is because these are the people who - if awake, aware, and empowered - are the most powerful of all. And I don't mean power over others, but powerful in their connection with each other and their ability to weave a new paradigm into existence, one we haven't seen on these continents for millennia. Convince the most powerful that they are marginalized victims and powerless in the face of their generational traumas, and they cocreate exactly what they are convinced of.I have done all I can to reach people across the world to deliver the message of empowerment, but my words, articles, and novels are simply not enough. We find that most of the time, even among the most awake of light-beings, my words are twisted out of their original meaning and made into something completely different - or simply forgotten, or the main message just not seen.Because of this, my words are changing. My message is taking on other expressions, such as novels, music, and art. And my articles are less "fluffy" - not in the sense of being aggressive or harsh, but simply going into depths I had not expressed in the past.I am not sure if you consider yourself part of the oppressed peoples of the world, so let me explain. No matter the color of your skin, if you believe yourself to have been victimized - or feel victimized right now - then you are one of them. If you feel that the color of your skin or the sex of your body makes you the bad character of this movie, then you are one of them. You see, for the illusion to work, the narrative needs victims, aggressors, saviors, and martyrs - all of them.Someone, or a people, cannot become the aggressor or the victim in isolation. With that in mind, let's see how to step out of this cycle. As individuals, it is easy because I have given you the tools to do so for over a decade and a half now. But as peoples of the world, it is slightly different. It requires a bit of mental gymnastics and stepping outside of the light/dark matrix. For that purpose, I created a tool I call 0bservation (yes, with a zero at the start). This is the call to action for this year:The act of 0bservation is when we simply look at a topic, object, or person - in this case, the mantle of victim/aggressor on a people - but do not have any "interaction" with it. We 0bserve and experience the 0bservation of the topic, object, or person but don't judge it. Thoughts about it are thanked and released; we step out of the way and simply allow the Universe to look at the item through our eyes.Whenever thoughts, emotions, judgments, wants, or feelings come up about this topic, thank them and let them pass through you, saying, “Thank you for expressing.”If one of the thoughts, emotions, judgments, wants, or feelings gets “stuck” in you and you cannot release it easily, use the Fear Processing Exercise to release it, then continue to 0bserve the item. When we observe something and really want a certain outcome, what we move into (and it's not a negative thing - it is simply a different tool) is Conscious Co-creation. In other words, we want to create a certain outcome or reality. That is not what this call to action is about. We do not want to interfere with the 0bservation exercise.Sometimes, when we 0bserve, we get firewalls and a sense of "no." We can process those feelings and firewalls with the Firewalls Exercise.OK, so as you can see, there are THREE exercises you can use in this call to action. One is to 0bserve the people who are covered in a mantle of victim or aggressor, martyr or savior. Another is to process any strong feelings, emotions, or thoughts that come through. And the third is to process any firewalls that come up.You now have your homework - let's do this. The discussion doesn't stop here - listen to the full podcast episode for unfiltered insights from Inelia and our panelists. I read this article about why facts don't change our minds and it gave me a lot to think about. What views am I holding that I haven't really thought through? How can I communicate my frustrations with certain ideas/beliefs in a heated argument in a way that makes people actually listen? Can we even change people's opinions? Oh, and there's some cool new vocabulary in there that we'll talk about, of course. [EPISODE TRANSCRIPT]Follow me for more contentIG @englishwithdaneTikTok @englishwithdane

Pastoral Reflections Finding God In Ourselves by Msgr. Don Fischer
Gospel Matthew 13:47-53 Jesus said to the disciples: "The Kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth." "Do you understand all these things?" They answered, "Yes." And he replied, "Then every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old." When Jesus finished these parables, he went away from there. Reflection This parable makes it clear that the plan of God is ultimately that one day evil will be destroyed. It is the thing that creates pain, suffering, death, destruction. But he also is reminding us in this passage that there is something about learning wisdom, about understanding what is really revealed to us from God. And some of its in the Old Testament, which was a kind of exclusive religion. And the law was what was at the heart of it. And then there is the New Testament, where it's a it's an inclusive religion, and it's all about not the law, but about forgiveness and understanding. Which is right? They're both right. That's the key. Live in the paradox. Closing Prayer Father, our hope is always wrapped in your promises. Convince us of the meaning of this parable so that we can believe with you that you are engaged in the work of saving all of us, bringing us all into a new, wonderful earth. A new heaven, a new image of who we are. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
When you have made the decision and follow the rules/strategies to 100%, you don't have to think anymore…You just act accordingly …For instance, the bravery of the soldier of Napoleon/Hitler… they just act accordingly, not thinking, no guessing… this means full commitment… No problem anymoreIf a person, even he is the worst sinner, has made the decision to become a yogi, he is already a saint… Srimad BhagavatamIf you want to shift your life, you just act…For instance, when I understood that eating meat is stupid, unethical and for what is this good… I changed immediately. When I could understand that eating only raw is the best I could change immediately…When I could understand that total surrender to the inner part instead to follow my ego…For what, should I live such a lousy ego life? I could change immediately. When I convinced quite a lot of people (even my best friends) to stop smoking, after some time they were disgusted to smoke … and stopped smoking…Imagine, if you are compromising your decision then you never have made the shift to be on a higher level….And even it is only 2% that you compromise to eat unhealthy food… You never have made the decision to live healthily…For instance, it was really magical when our Asram was traveling through India that I could get everywhere my raw-cost. Because I have made the decision to eat only raw-cost, I attracted everywhere my bananas, fruits… And that even when I was hiking in the Himalaya…If you don't have made your decision to 100% you will attract everywhere your own resistance …The first step: Convince yourself to 100%For instance, I always find enough material to write every week my 2 blogs, because I have made the decision….And I hate inconsistency,… Sorry, I can't hardly accept inconsistency people… It is for me so disgusting… Because it is disgusting, I don't want to become that. Second step:Hate inconsistency … If you make your decision, you cut off all other things that are not in line with your choice…All successful entrepreneurs have one thing in common, they went through that never return option… and all unsuccessful entrepreneurs didn't make it until the never return option. For instance, I never could convince me to marry. Why? I want to have sex with my darling regularly and for that is the marriage the worst place. I have never seen a marriage that would work out for me. Welcome to the MyPolyglot Podcast! Join Jimmy Mello, author of "Confessions of a Fake Polyglot: How to Convince People I Don't Speak Every Language in the World", as he delves into the fascinating and often misunderstood world of language learning. You can learn more at www.jimmymello.com.In this episode, we explore the provocative label of "fake polyglot" and challenge the traditional notions of language mastery. Jimmy shares his personal journey, from his early curiosity shaped by observing language differences in his hometown to developing his own "Mello Method" inspired by natural learning experiences, like the "Goat-Speak" ("Cabrês") of a young boy named Frederico. We'll discuss how language learning is far more than just achieving perfect fluency; it's about connection, transformation, and embracing imperfection. You'll hear insights on the "polyglot circus" culture prevalent on platforms like YouTube, where performance can sometimes overshadow genuine linguistic depth.Discover how different approaches, from the rapid learning techniques of Mykel Hawke and Elisabeth Smith to the stress-free methods of Michel Thomas and the psychologically-informed strategies of Mateusz Grzesiak, offer unique pathways to functional communication. We'll also touch upon Dmitry Petrov's approach to teaching languages, which prioritizes understanding structures over achieving absolute fluency.Ultimately, this podcast reveals that being a "fake polyglot" can be a badge of curiosity and passion. It's a journey where errors are celebrated as progress, and the true value lies in the human connection forged through every attempt to speak, understand, and appreciate diverse cultures. As Jimmy confesses, what truly matters is not how many languages you speak, but what you do with them.

Pastoral Reflections Finding God In Ourselves by Msgr. Don Fischer
Gospel Matthew 10:24-33 Jesus said to his Apostles: “No disciple is above his teacher, no slave above his master. It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household! “Therefore do not be afraid of them. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.” Reflection Jesus is warning his apostles about the encounters they will have. And if there is a house that has been run by an evil master, the people in that place will be evil. But he reminds them, don't be afraid of evil, because it always breeds itself in the hidden part of a place in darkness. And so Jesus is reminding his disciples that he will always help them proclaim the truth, and that the disciples should not be afraid of those who can't kill the soul, even though they can kill the body. And why would he give them that advice, unless you would also follow up with what he says? I am in love with you. You are valuable to me. Every hair on your head is counted. Don't be afraid. Just acknowledge me. Even though it is risky and it exposes evil. Closing Prayer There's always been evil in the world. And it's important not to be afraid of it. Because that gives it all the power it needs to rob us of the peace and the well being, that is a sign that we know we are loved and we are cared for. Convince us of this love of God for us, and never let us be afraid. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Danny Fontaine aka The Pitch Guy is the author of “Pitch: How to Captivate and Convince Any Audience On The Planet” and host of the Pitch Masters podcast. He unpacks how to tap into emotion before logic, why your audience's trust matters more than your tech specs, and how to build stories and structures that cut through noise and leave a mark. You'll learn how to create “anomalies” that make people sit up, how to pitch even if you're introverted or nervous, and why the best presenters never rely on slides alone. Plus, you'll hear the real story behind the most legendary pitch in British advertising history – and how it still shapes how great ideas are sold today. This isn't just about pitching better. Israel's war on Iran was one that many have expected, and yet with nuclear talks between the United States and Iran ongoing, few saw it coming. It's Thursday, June 5th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Christian groups in India to speak out against persecution June 9 Christian groups across India are organizing a protest against persecution of Christians on Monday, June 9. The National Christian Front noted, “Our Christian brothers and sisters are enduring brutal attacks and growing intolerance from anti-social elements. This is not merely a Christian issue — it is a grave concern for humanity, for peace, and for the values enshrined in our Constitution.” Christians suffered over 600 incidents of violence and discrimination in India last year. The country is ranked 11th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of most difficult places to be a Christian. U.K. Christian groups calling for prayer on June 11 In the United the Kingdom, Christian groups are calling for a day of prayer on Wednesday, June 11 for protecting human life. This comes as lawmakers are considering bills to legalize assisted suicide. Listen to comments from Ciarán Kelly, director of The Christian Institute. KELLY: “This is a crucial time for our country. So, it's vital that Christians are asking the God, Who made Heaven and Earth, that He would overrule in all these things, to protect vulnerable people from this careless and callous bill.” In 1 Timothy 1:1-2, the Apostle Paul wrote, “I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” Trump overturns pro-abortion Biden rule In the United States, the Trump administration rescinded a pro-abortion rule on Tuesday that came from the Biden administration. The rule tried to force hospital emergency rooms to offer abortions even if the state restricted them. Matt Bowman, Senior Counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, said, “Doctors—especially in emergency rooms—are tasked with preserving life. The Trump administration has rolled back a harmful Biden-era mandate that compelled doctors to end unborn lives, in violation of their deeply held beliefs.” Trump raises tariffs on steel imports President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday to raise tariffs on steel imports. The order doubles tariffs on steel and aluminum coming into the country from 25% to 50%. The levy will affect steel exporters in Canada, Mexico, and many countries in Europe. However, the tariff on steel from the United Kingdom remains at 25% as the U.S. and U.K. work out a trade deal. Dust from Africa's Saharan Desert hits America Over the weekend, a massive plume of dust made its way to Florida all the way from the Saharan Desert in Africa. Such dust plumes are known as the Saharan Air Layer and typically cross the Atlantic each year. The current plume is the biggest one to reach the U.S. so far this season. It measures nearly 2,000 miles wide and 750 miles from north to south. The dust can diminish air quality but also creates spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Only 1 in 100 Evangelical pastors leave ministry annually A report from Lifeway Research found that only 1 out of 100 Evangelical pastors leave the ministry each year. This low rate has remained steady for the last 10 years despite many pastors acknowledging their work is very demanding and even overwhelming. Scott McConnell with Lifeway Research said, “The rate of pastors departing the pastorate is steady and quite low given the demands of the role. Many of those leaving the pastorate feel they are moving at God's direction to another role of ministry.” In 2 Timothy 4:2, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” The American Miracle movie shows God's intervention in U.S. The Left insists that there's nothing special about America. But a new docudrama contends that God inspired its founding. The American Miracle – Our Nation is No Accident hits the silver screen in 1,000 theaters nationwide for 3 days only -- Monday, June 9th through Wednesday, June 11th. Inspired by Michael Medved's bestseller, this exciting, entertaining, and edifying motion picture experience was created in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. ‘ Medved appeared on The 700 Club. MEDVED: “America is no accident. All of our most important leaders, from Washington to Lincoln to Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt -- all of our leaders have understood that America has a divine purpose.” Consider God's protection of George Washington – the Father of our Country -- in a ferocious battle in 1755 during the French and Indian War. During the Battle of Monongahela, 69 of 70 officers were either killed or wounded. Washington was the only officer who was not shot off his horse. In fact, two horses were shot from underneath him. Yet he lived. Even a Native American chief later said they couldn't touch Washington. Shockingly, after the battle, he found numerous bullet holes in his jacket and bullet fragments in his hair, but he was miraculously unscathed. No wonder they called him “Bulletproof.” Visit the website https://americanmiraclemovie.com/, watch the trailer, click on Tickets, and type in your zipcode to get tickets for next week at a theater near you. Amy Cool from St. Cloud, Florida wrote, “I like that I can trust The Worldview newscast to report the truth from a Biblical perspective. I like the Scriptures referenced as they pertain to a particular story because it shows the relevance of the Bible to our life today. That's often hard for people to see when they haven't grown up in a home where the Bible was read or explained.” 14 Worldview listeners gave $1,420 to fund our $123,500 annual budget Toward this week's $30,875 goal to fund one-fourth of The Worldview newscast's annual budget by this Friday, June 6th, 14 listeners stepped up to the plate on Wednesday by 7:15pm Central last night. Our thanks to Grace in Duncanville, Texas, Greg in Rochester, New Hampshire, Andy in Santa Barbara, California, and George in Carrollton, Missouri – each of whom gave $25. Those 14 listeners gave a total of $1,420. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (Drum roll sound effect) $6,352 (People clapping sound effect) We missed our goal of 20 donors by just 6 donors. That means by this Friday, we still need to raise $24,523. Whether it's Thanksgiving or Christmas, we churn out a weekday broadcast 52 weeks per year. It's a commitment we're glad to make, but we need help to cover the cost. Would you prayerfully consider investing $100 per month for 12 months into this ministry, helping to pay for the work of the six-member Worldview team? If 20 of you made that pledge we would hit our Friday, June 6th goal one day early. Just go to TheWorldview.com and click on Give on the top right. And click on the button that indicates a recurring donation if you want to give monthly. Thanks for investing your resources into this media ministry that champions the truth. What it means is, you don't get to determine how it turns out, but you do get to plant your seeds of goodness. And as Thoreau says, ‘Convince me you have a seed there, and I'm prepared to expect miracles.' You get to plant the seeds, and eventually, in their own time, they bear fruit. That's not your job. Your job is to make a beautiful garden, to plant beautiful things, and to tend them.” – Jack KornfieldAbout Ocean Robbins:Ocean Robbins is an American entrepreneur and author, best known for his role as the co-founder of Food Revolution Network, Inc.
