For this week's podcast, Brion shares the final part of a 4-part series to highlight black players and coaches at Iowa in honor of Black History month in February. He highlights the following athletes and coaches, many that were trailblazers at Iowa and across the nation: Kevin Gamble, Ed Horton, Robert Smith, Larry Station, Quinn Early and Andre Tippett. For this week's podcast, Brion shares some books and movies that were written about or written by former players. A few were written or directed by Quinn Early, and not surprisingly, there are a few books about Nile Kinnick. There are also books about Duke Slater, Connie Hawkins, Chuck Long, Bob Stoops, Chris Street, Ronnie Lester and even some less famous players. Player profiles include Jerry Hilgenberg, who walked-on at Iowa in the early 1950's and had two sons that played at Iowa and in the NFL (Jay and Joel). Sadly he passed away last week. With the news yesterday of Kadyn Proctor joining the Hawks, I also profile a big-time football recruit back in 1972, Butch Caldwell. He also had all the big schools after him, as he was a dual-threat QB that was desperately needed after Iowa's 1-10 season in 1971. He helped lead the Hawks to a huge upset at #11 Penn State in 1976. Quinn Early played 12 seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers, the New Orleans Saints, the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. After his time in the NFL, he moved on to become highly skilled in the Martial Arts and now works as a stunt double and performer in movies like American Ultra, Den of Thieves and The Nice Guys.On this episode, Quinn joined me to talk about another passion of his – honoring his mother’s legacy by publishing her beautiful book “Bryant Acres.” Bryant Acres tell the story of his great grandfather Sherrod Brown, who at the height of slavery in the antebellum south, was a free man of color who sold himself into indentured servitude. He found love and went on to become one of the wealthiest land owners of the time. And in the process built a multi racial community.Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the Alzheimer’s Association and help Quinn raise money to fight Dementia and Alzheimer’s, the disease that ultimately took my mother’s life. To purchase Bryant Acres, go to https://www.bryantacres.com/. You can connect to Quinn on Twitter @QuinnEarly and on Instagram.
