We take a little bit of a break from Hawkeye news to turn our attention to a very special cause that we love to support each and every year. It's the Chuck Long Charity Auction to help support the Children's Therapy of the Quad Cities. We are joined by our good friend Chuck Long and the President and CEO of the Children's Therapy Center of the Quad Cities, Angie Peterson, to discuss the upcoming event and how by just registering to bid will put you in a drawing for free gifts, even if you don't post a winning bid. We talk about history of the program, which is celebrating 75 years this year, and we discuss how Long got involved in the event. Then we discuss the bidding beginning on May 10th and wrapping up on May 18th and how you can get involved. How about some great Hawkeye items that will be up for bid, including a signed helmet from Cooper DeJean, a signed basketball by Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, and Gabbie Marshall, a 10 year bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, life size cutout of Caitlin Clark, Taylor Swift signed album, and so much more.
With spring football starting up this week in Iowa City it's a great time to catch up with Chuck Long and discuss the offensive side of the ball. We open the show talking to Long about his work as the offensive coordinator for the Arlington Renegades and head coach Bob Stoops in the UFL and starting play in that league later this month. Then we dive into the Hawkeyes and setting up a new offensive under Tim Lester. Long discusses Lester and the advantage of him being an experienced quarterback, along with a guy from the Chicago suburbs. We discuss the process of installing a new offense for the Hawkeyes and what that process is like both in the meeting room and then on the field. We also look at the challenge of putting a new offense in place while expected starting quarterback Cade McNamara is likely sidelined this spring following ACL surgery last fall. How would a coordinator get him up to speed. What should Iowa do with their race to find a backup quarterback this season? Do you give more reps this spring to Marco Lainez? Finally we talk about the new technology coming to college football with direct communication between coordinator and quarterback and the advantages that Iowa will have with Lester calling plays from the booth as opposed to being on the field.
For this week's podcast, Brion shares some books and movies that were written about or written by former players. A few were written or directed by Quinn Early, and not surprisingly, there are a few books about Nile Kinnick. There are also books about Duke Slater, Connie Hawkins, Chuck Long, Bob Stoops, Chris Street, Ronnie Lester and even some less famous players. Player profiles include Jerry Hilgenberg, who walked-on at Iowa in the early 1950's and had two sons that played at Iowa and in the NFL (Jay and Joel). Sadly he passed away last week. With the news yesterday of Kadyn Proctor joining the Hawks, I also profile a big-time football recruit back in 1972, Butch Caldwell. He also had all the big schools after him, as he was a dual-threat QB that was desperately needed after Iowa's 1-10 season in 1971. He helped lead the Hawks to a huge upset at #11 Penn State in 1976. The Hawkeyes fell to Michigan on Saturday night in the Big Ten title game. We open this edition of the Chuck Long Podcast discussing the result of the contest with the Iowa legend. Can you teach pocket awareness or are you just who you are when it comes to that area of the game? Then we talk about the match-up with Tennessee and their head coach Josh Heupel. Back in 2000, Long was the quarterback coach at Oklahoma and actually coached Heupel to a runner-up finish for the Heisman Trophy. He talks about how detail oriented he was as a player and why he is not surprised that Heupel has become a good coach. We also discuss the unique line splits that Tennessee will use and why they line up the way they do. Finally we talk about the bowl prep for Iowa and giving players time off and other getting more work in practice and also the decisions by the college football playoff committee and if they made the right call of Alabama ahead of Florida State.
On this episode of Our American Stories, Chuck Long tells the story of how he came to be Iowa's star quarterback in the 1980's and how he later came to like coaching more than playing. Support the show (https://www.ouramericanstories.com/donate)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We wrap up the regular season with another edition of the Chuck Long Podcast. This week we open up discussing the wild win over Nebraska. It wasn't a very exciting game until the final two minutes. We look back at the coaching decisions that were made by both teams and how it worked out for the Hawkeyes. We also dive back into the plays that we called in those sequences and what we saw from both teams. We talk a little bit about what you do with a struggling kicker as a coach and what you might do this week in that sitaution and how the kickoff issue is very important. Then we dive into a preview of Michigan. Why is the early portion of the game the most important part and how it's expected that Michigan will come out strong. What's the path for Iowa to pull the upset on Saturday night? Can they do it? We also have a look at the opening of the transfer portal and trying to keep your own players while looking to enhance your own roster and continue to recruit towards signing day in a few weeks. Finally we pick the games on Championship Weekend.
This week it's a celebration on the podcast as Iowa has won the Big Ten West title after beating Illinois in Iowa City. Chuck Long weighs in on the adversity that the Hawkeyes have managed to deal with from a player and coaching perspective to win a division title. We break down the win over Illinois and what Long saw on the two touchdown drives for Iowa. How Iowa's offense is changing in the red zone with the use of some different plays and the development of Deacon Hill as a passer. Then on the second scoring drive, we talk about how Iowa is using the counter in the run game to spring Kaleb Johnson in the ground game. Then we turn our attention to the game at Nebraska on Friday. Is there a temptation to rest some players who are pretty banged up to prepare for the Big Ten title game? How do you handle practice on a short week? And we discuss Nebraska needing a win to make a bowl for the first time since 2016. Finally we pick some Big Ten games and discuss the Michigan vs. Ohio State rivalry.
Plenty to talk about this week on the Chuck Long Podcast. We start with a look back at the win over Rutgers and the Hawkeyes scoring 22 points in the victory. Did we see the development that fans have been hoping for from Deacon Hill? What did Chuck think of the performance from the Iowa quarterback and did we see Brian Ferentz relax as a playcaller? We then talk about the continued amazing play of the Iowa defense. How do they keep getting teams to take the bait and play the way that they want them to play? How does Phil Parker keep this unit performing at a very high level? Then we look at the race in the Big Ten West. The race that Iowa is in total control of with a two game lead with two games to play. But, there are two tricky games left, including one on Saturday against Illinois. We look at the game and also peek ahead to Nebraska. Finally we wrap up talking about the mess at Michigan, James Franklin firing more coordinators, Jimbo Fisher getting paid to not work, and we pick some games.
This week on the Chuck Long Podcast we have a lot of ground to cover. We start with the news from last week regarding Brian Ferentz not returning for the 2024 season and what he thinks about the news. What should Iowa and Kirk Ferentz do next at offensive coordinator? Then we dive into the win over Northwestern and playing a football game at Wrigley Field. Long gives his thoughts on what it was like to see a game played there and how much he enjoyed watching the game being played there. We talk about the final drive for Iowa and how Deacon Hill threw the best pass that he has all season to Kaleb Brown to set up the game winning field goal. We also dive into Cooper DeJean playing on the offensive side of the ball and discuss if he should have a Wildcat package as well. The Iowa offensive line is really banged up. What should Iowa do as far as their run game this week. Then we take a look at the really bad Big Ten West and how Iowa is now in the driver's seat for Indy, but it won't be easy. We wrap up picking some games for the upcoming week.
A jam packed edition of the Chuck Long Podcast. We open discussing the Cooper DeJean punt return. Was it a legal play or not? Why was Iowa not able to rebound for that play being overturned and move the ball into field goal range? What are his thoughts on the struggling Iowa offense? Then we discuss the bye week and what can Iowa do about their offense? Should the Hawkeyes make a change at quarterback or at least make it an open competition? What about putting Cooper DeJean in at as a Wildcat quarterback or some other package? We also discuss sign stealing in college football and how it's been around forever. Finally we pick some college football games this week.
This week on the Chuck Long Podcast, we review the victory that was hard to explain, the win over Wisconsin. How did the Hawkeye throw for just 37 passing yards and win a football game? What about the Hawkeye ground game right now and how is it working so well? Then we praise the punting of Tory Taylor and Chuck compares him to Reggie Roby. We also discuss the injury situation and if there are any options left for the Iowa coaches on the offensive side of the ball? We discuss the race in the Big Ten West. Is Iowa in the drivers seat and is that a comfortable place to be right now? Then we wrap up picking some games and talking about outstanding event at Kinnick today and praise for Iowa women's basketball.
This week on the Chuck Long Podcast we visit with the former Iowa quarterback to breakdown the Hawkeyes win over the Boilermakers. What did he think of the performance of new starting quarterback Deacon Hill? What areas does he need to show the greatest improvement? Should the Iowa coaches be looking at the possibility of giving Joe Labas a look? How about a play package for Joe Labas? We also discuss the Iowa defense and the high snap counts that they are facing just about every week? Could getting Noah Shannon back in November help the Iowa defense? Also we talk Big Ten West race and an overall look at the conference race at this time, plus we pick some games taking place this Saturday.
Plenty to discuss this week on the Chuck Long Podcast. We visit with Chuck about what he saw from the Iowa offense this week and more of an early emphasis on the passing game to wide receivers. We also discuss the change at quarterback due to the injury to Cade McNamara. Thoughts on how he was progressing before the injury and then what did we think of the performance of Deacon Hill. What can Iowa do to use Hill moving forward, assuming Cade is out the rest of the season. We also discuss the wild and wacky Big Ten West and pick some games. Finally, if you want to order the really cool 1983 Iowa coaches polo, go to this link and get your order in today! https://redandwest.com/collections/shop-iowa-gameday-apparel
This week on the Chuck Long Podcast, the former Iowa quarterback and Tom Kakert from HawkeyeReport.com look back at the loss to Penn State. Long discusses what went wrong from an offensive perspective and we look at some potential options for the Iowa offense moving forward. How do the Hawkeyes get the ball in the hands of their wide receivers more often? What plays should be looked at as far as getting the ball to wide receivers? We look at the importance of leadership this week from the Hawkeye players to keep the team together. Are there concerned about the pass rush and how is that impact Iowa's defense and their inability to create turnovers and get off the field. Then we wrap up picking some of the big games this weekend.
This week on the Chuck Long Podcast, we open the show with our guest Will Bowersox, who has reproduced the 1983 Iowa football coaches polo and is selling them online. You can get a look at it and purchase it here: https://redandwest.com/collections/shop-iowa-gameday-apparel Then we look back at the Hawkeyes win over Western Michigan. Iowa went heavy into the run game and that worked. Is Iowa now better at the counter game instead of the zone scheme? What are the views of Cade McNamara three games in? What's Chuck's thoughts on the decision to keep scoring late in the game? We then look at the Iowa offense potentially without leading receiver Luke Lachey. What's the impact there? Then we look at Penn State. Are they the best team in the Big Ten this year? How does Iowa put together a game plan to get off to a good start in Happy Valley against the PSU fans and the "White Out"?
This week on the Chuck Long Podcast we look back the win over Iowa State and get his thoughts on the Hawkeye offense and their performance against the Cyclones.
Week one of the Iowa football season is in the books and Chuck Long breaks down what he saw from Cade McNamara and the Hawkeyes. We take a look at the hot start and how Iowa did very well with scripted plays and then the struggles in the second and third quarter. We assess how McNamara played and how you manage a quarterback who is less than 100% and probably will be for a while. Then we look ahead to the Iowa State game and what the first road trip will be like for the Hawkeyes.
The Iowa football season is just around the corner and that means the return of the Chuck Long Podcast. We begin season three with a special guest, Iowa's potential cornerback All American Cooper DeJean. We talk about his NIL relationship with RTI threads.
