Notes and Links to Julian Randall's Work     Julian Randall is a Living Queer Black author from Chicago. He has received fellowships from Cave Canem, CantoMundo, Callaloo, and the Watering Hole. Julian is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize and the winner of the 2019 Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award from the Publishing Triangle.   His writing has been published in New York Times Magazine, Ploughshares, and POETRY, and anthologized in Black Boy Joy (which debuted at #1 on the NYT Best Seller list), Wild Tongues Can't Be Tamed, and Furious Flower. Julian has essays in Vibe Magazine, Los Angeles Review of Books, and other venues. The Ballads Of The Last Light by Gea Wildwood favorite track One Step Away From Dawn Italian Gea Wildwood has collaborated with Canadian fantasy author Nick Betts here. Together they wrote the lyrics to two of the songs, and besides her dulcet vocals, she plays acoustic guitar, cello, zither, and Native American flute. Each song represents a different book of Betts' pentalogy, “Fates of Aten,” and are done in a medieval/Celtic style. All The Pretty Little Horses by Witch Of The Vale & Melanie Witch of the Vale with, yes, you heard me right, Melanie, take the classic little lullaby into darker territory. Spine-tinglingly spooky FREE! by David Carroll favorite track The Female Transport Folk rocker David Carroll returns with a few of his friends for some more rollicking and frolicking with traditional tunes under the guise of Bold Reynold. There are both male and female vocals here, plus instrumentation including crumhorns, cor anglais, uilleann pipes, fiddle, bouzouki, dulcimer, bass, percussion, and of course, electric guitar. Human Music: Live Improvisations I by Jessica Roch favorite track St. John on Bethnal Green, Oct. ’24 Multi-instrumentalist Jessica Roch is a classically trained violinist and pianist, but that doesn't stop her from exploring far afield. Here, she is improvising live, and the pieces are both spare and rich. She conceived this as “a protest and rejection of AI generated music,” and it illustrates beautifully that AI just isn't a substitute for artistry. The Cicadas by Dead Can Dance This is more Brendan Perry, solo, than DCD, but I feel this latest single captures much of the spirit of the incandescent duo. It's very medieval in feel, and the dissonant female chorus lightens up the darkness. Donn/Dubh by Arun Sood & Angeline Morrison favorite track A Rìbhinn a Bheil Cuimhn’ Agad Collaboration between Arun Sood and Angeline Morrison, this is altogether haunting. And fittingly so, as it is an exploration of ancient Celtic texts, which referred differing wind directions to certain colours. Chill-inducing, it feels as if you've suddenly awoken to find you have traversed time and found yourself on desolate shores, with music and voices drifting on the currents of wind. The Gods Laugh by Alison Cotton favorite track Sprigs of Heather UK Multi-instrumentalist and composer utilizes viola, harmonium, piano, percussion, and synths, plus her vocals on this drone-y psych-y folk-y release. She sometimes reaches into avant/ambient territory, further cementing the overall haunting atmosphere. Borrow or Rob by Andrew Bird favorite track Tables and Chairs (Orchestral Version) This is a reimagining of some of the pieces honouring a 20-year old release, that somehow skipped my attention at the time. Andrew is a superb violinist and vocalist, who writes very quirky songs that mostly touch on folk, rock and swing, and he whistles like nobody's business. Most of these are being performed with orchestra, live, on this outing. Sorry I missed the boat the first time, but I'm a happy passenger now. With snacks! The Dark by CHELSEA WOLFE favorite track Cold Dark gothic folk doom artist Chelsea Wolfe continues in her signature introspective and observational songwriting that define her work. The production is mostly hushed, with washy, fuzzed, and at times, bombastic guitars, provided by notable guests. These are all songs of loss, whether chosen or inflicted. Her anguished vocals and lyrics really cut to the heart of processing deep grief, and she finally finds solace among the night stars, and perhaps, even a ghost that she is mourning. Of The Birds by The Thorn This is the other single released this year by the artists formerly known as Large Plants. With it's fuzzy guitars, sweet vocals, and lysergic harmonies, this is gorgeous folk rock, harkening back to it's heyday, and perfectly executed.

His dignity in the face of oppression inspired me to write this play. Can We Really Overcome Sin? (Romans 6:1–16) - Dr. T. J. Betts

Phil and Emily continue the Angelina Jolie action films miniseries with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life (2003), joined by Carson Betts and Caroline Thompson, co-hosts of the How Have You Not Seen It podcast. All four participants are watching this film for the first time. This is relevant information.The Cradle of Life follows Lara Croft racing to find Pandora's Box before a rogue scientist with strong Peter Thiel energy can use it as a biological weapon, with complications provided by her ex-lover Terry Sheridan, played by Gerard Butler. It cost $95 million, grossed $160 million worldwide, and opened July 25th, 2003 against Spy Kids 3D, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bad Boys 2, and Seabiscuit. It received three stars from Roger Ebert, which nearly convinced Emily to see it in theaters that summer. She saw The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen instead. Phil does not believe she made the better choice. The film was also banned in China for giving the impression of a country in chaos overrun by secret societies. Hollywood had not yet figured that out.The consensus is that this movie is more competent than the first Tomb Raider along nearly every axis, which somehow makes it less enjoyable. Phil calls it dumb and not fun, as opposed to the first film, which was dumb and fun. Emily notes the big action set piece in the middle is a shootout in a lab, which she finds strange given the title. They spotted a real gap in the market. Small and mid-sized gun builders were getting squeezed by venture capital firms buying up precision rifle component manufacturers, jacking up prices and cutting margins. Tim and Jason built their processes from the ground up to fill that void. Today they’re a full OEM shop producing parts to aerospace tolerances for bolt action hunting rifles. Five-axis machining, horizontal mills, EDM, serious work. Drugs Tim has a doctorate in pharmacy and works for a compounding pharmacy in southeastern Pennsylvania. Compounding means making custom medications that either don’t exist commercially or have been abandoned by drug companies as unprofitable. The work is intensely creative. If a child or animal won’t take a pill, you find another way. Tim’s team once made antibiotics for a rhino who happened to love Rice Krispie treats, so they baked the dose into a full 9×9 pan. They’ve also embedded pills into fish to medicate penguins. It’s a business tightly regulated by the FDA and more manufacturing than most people realize. Horses Tim and his brothers grew up in harness racing. Both of their grandfathers trained horses and his brother is a full-time trainer today. Tim also owns a company that manufactures the sulkies, the two-wheeled race bikes the horses pull. They ship them to the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and South America. It’s a genuinely global manufacturing business inside a niche sport most people have never thought about. When Worlds Collide, Good Things Happen At first glance, these three worlds have nothing to do with each other. But the overlaps keep showing up. Veterinarians, some of Tim’s core pharmacy customers, turn out to be disproportionately into hunting and shooting, so pharmacy relationships open firearms doors. He met a major firearms customer through the horse world. And the problem-solving mindset carries across all three. As Tim puts it, the trial and error in pharmacy looks a lot like dialing in a new tool path in the shop. “This carrier didn’t really work at the pH it has to be at, so we have to try a different carrier. It’s a lot of the same type of things from a production standpoint.” His wife says she never knows when he takes a phone call at seven in the evening whether it’s going to be about horses, guns, machining, or pharmacy. Tim just shrugs. “Never a dull moment.”
