Boomer questioned the Browns' strategy if they skip a QB, echoing Gio's sentiment about the Giants. They discussed first-round QB busts. Jerry's update included the final call of Florida's championship win, the Mets' shutout of the Marlins, the Yankees' cold loss, Ohtani's near-cycle, and Trump's praise for Betts at the Dodgers' White House visit. Hour 1 The Rangers' season is likely over, while the Mets continue winning despite offensive struggles, thanks to strong pitching and a solid bullpen. Cold weather forced MLB to reschedule games, with snow falling during the Yankees' Detroit game. Florida won the NCAA Championship against Houston. The Detroit Tigers' assistant GM resigned after accusations of sending inappropriate photos to female colleagues at the Tigers and MLB. Jerry's update included sounds of Florida's win, Charles Barkley's comments about San Antonio women, and a recap of the Mets' 2-0 shutout of the Marlins. Jerry's Boomer impressions were awkward. The hour concluded with further discussion of the Tigers' assistant GM's resignation and a caller's contrasting perspective on sending such photos within a marriage. Hour 2 A Queens dean reported a student's father sent them inappropriate photos after a school outreach about the child's poor performance, prompting Boomer to question Gio's potential reaction to a bad report card. Jerry's update highlighted the Mets' 2-0 shutout of the Marlins (Senga's strong pitching, Lindor's 3 hits), Judge's RBI in the Yankees' loss, and the Dodgers' White House visit. Florida won the NCAA Championship. JJ Watt discussed the difficulty of criticizing players, countered by Boomer's "call it like you see it" stance. The Kelce brothers discussed detachable body parts. Lastly, Yankees and Mets games were moved to daytime due to cold, and the Knicks' performance against different caliber teams was noted. Hour 3 Reports suggest the Giants will draft Abdul Carter if both he and Shedeur Sanders are available, with the Saints being the betting favorite for Sanders at pick nine, implying teams might be hesitant about him as a top-five pick despite quarterback needs at the top. The hour ended with Gio's annoyance at social media food reviews mimicking Dave Portnoy and the overuse of "didn't have that on my bingo card," Boomer's enjoyment of irritating Jerry, and news of an upcoming docuseries on Jerry Jones. Hour 4 As the Masters begins, Gio discussed his betting plans and intriguing tournament angles, along with the potential PGA/LIV merger. Jerry's final update covered the Mets' 2-0 win over the Marlins (Soto's RBI, 5th straight win, Lindor's 1500th hit), the Yankees' cold loss (Rodon's HR comment), and Ohtani/Dodgers' White House visit with Trump. Sam Rosen's call signaled the Rangers' season's end. The Moment of the Day was Jerry's awkward Boomer impression. The show concluded with Gio and Eddie reminiscing about a mistaken Zoom call and an awkward interview with Chris Russo and Serena Williams.

Betts rightfully pointed out that no matter what decision he made he would upset some people. He decided to attend and focus on the team's achievement. The podcast crew discuss Betts and the merge of politics and sports. The Pirates removed a sign dedicated to the legacy of Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente only to have it restored after public outcry and a strong statement from the Clemente family. This situation was tone-deaf about best. The Bucs ownership continue to step on their own toes. Lawrence Butler, Jackson Merrill, Kristian Campbell, Ketel Marte, and more have all signed multi-year extension. These clubs are signing their young talent early and for a long time. Is this good for the game? Lastly, The Giants are in first place in the NL West - over the Dodgers and Padres. Is the NL West the best division in baseball? The authors of two new poetry collections aspire to reach broad audiences with their work. First, John Himmelman says he wanted to tell stories with as few words as possible. The Boy Who Lived in a Shell, a book of illustrated poems intended for children, is connected by a single narrator, Ivo, who lives in a giant moon snail shell. In today's episode, Himmelman speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about working at a New York library, writing to make himself laugh, and making poetry accessible to short attention spans. Then, lawyer, educator and author Reginald Dwayne Betts spent eight years in prison for a crime he committed at 16. While there, Betts began to write. His latest collection Doggerel plays with the idea of mediocre poetry and a recurring motif of dogs. In today's episode, he speaks with NPR's Michel Martin about his Jack Russell terrier, reading poetry to strangers, and an emotional encounter with the police. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

This Day in Legal History: Gideon v. WainwrightOn March 18, 1963, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its landmark decision in Gideon v. Wainwright, fundamentally reshaping the American legal system. The case began when Clarence Earl Gideon, a Florida man accused of burglary, was denied a court-appointed attorney because state law only provided counsel for capital cases. Forced to represent himself, Gideon was convicted and sentenced to prison. From his jail cell, he handwrote a petition to the Supreme Court, arguing that his Sixth Amendment rights had been violated. The Court unanimously agreed, ruling that states must provide legal counsel to defendants who cannot afford an attorney. This decision extended the right to legal representation to all criminal defendants, regardless of financial status, reinforcing the principle of a fair trial. The ruling overturned Betts v. Brady (1942), which had allowed states discretion in providing counsel. As a result, public defender systems were expanded nationwide, ensuring that indigent defendants received proper legal representation. Gideon v. Wainwright remains a cornerstone of American criminal law, highlighting the importance of due process and equal justice. Today, the case serves as a reminder of how a single individual's persistence can shape constitutional rights for millions.Judge Sandra Segal Ikuta of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will take senior status, creating a vacancy for President Donald Trump to fill. Ikuta, appointed by George W. Bush, has served on the court for over a decade and is known for her conservative rulings. Her decision to step back adds to Trump's opportunities to shape the judiciary, as he previously appointed 54 appellate judges in his first term. The Ninth Circuit, historically liberal, has seen a shift in balance, with 16 Democratic-appointed and 13 Republican-appointed judges. Ikuta authored key opinions supporting Trump-era immigration and family planning policies. Before her judicial career, she worked as a journalist and later pursued law, clerking for prominent judges. Her transition to senior status will take effect upon the confirmation of her successor.Ninth Circuit's Ikuta to Step Back, Gives Trump Vacancy on CourtA U.S. judge has ordered the Trump administration to clarify whether it violated a court order by deporting hundreds of Venezuelans, potentially setting up a constitutional conflict. The administration defended its actions, arguing that courts lack authority over the president's use of the Alien Enemies Act, a rarely invoked wartime law. Judge James Boasberg had temporarily blocked the deportations, but flights carrying alleged Venezuelan gang members still proceeded. El Salvador's president shared footage of deportees arriving, seemingly defying the court's directive. White House officials denied wrongdoing, while Trump's border czar suggested they would continue the deportations regardless of judicial rulings. Legal experts countered that the government must follow court orders, regardless of where deportations occur. The ACLU and civil rights groups raised concerns over due process and the administration's broad use of executive power. Trump has increasingly tested legal limits since taking office, often facing judicial intervention. The outcome of this case could further define the balance of power between the presidency and the courts.US Judge Seeks Answers on Deportation of Venezuelans Despite Court OrderU.S. authorities deported Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a Rhode Island doctor, to Lebanon after finding images and videos on her phone that they claimed were sympathetic to Hezbollah. She had also attended the funeral of Hezbollah's former leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and stated her support for him from a religious perspective. The U.S. government classifies Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, and officials said they could not determine her true intentions in the country. A federal judge had issued an order requiring 48 hours' notice before her removal, but she was deported the same day. The Justice Department argued that proper notification procedures were followed, defending Customs and Border Protection against claims of violating the court order. Alawieh's legal team withdrew from the case, citing new diligence concerns. The court later sealed documents related to the government's explanation. The situation raises legal questions about immigration enforcement and judicial authority.Doctor deported to Lebanon had photos 'sympathetic' to Hezbollah on phone, US says | Reuters This is a public episode. Welcome to this probing, brand-new, fact filled episode of Light ‘Em Up.We are currently being actively downloaded in 119 countries, globally.  Please spread the word with a friend regarding our podcast! Remember, we are here for you and because of you!We tackle the topics that touch your lives! We hear so much talk about the topic of Qualified Immunity — but few really know what it is and what it consists of in much detail.  THIS episode will put to bed ALL of those questions.Bringing a §1983 Civil Rights lawsuit against any government entity is not an easy task to accomplish.Qualified immunity is a judicially crafted legal doctrine and concept created by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Pierson v Ray in 1967.The doctrine was created to protect government officials, particularly law enforcement officers, from frivolous lawsuits and financial liability when they acted in good faith in legally unclear situations. We discuss the requirement (as the law states) that there must be a constitutional violation that infringed upon the rights of a person that was “clearly established” at the time it was committed. Many legal scholars argue that qualified immunity has no legal basis and is not grounded in the text or history of the relevant statutes at 42 U.S. Section 1983.  Many argue that the doctrine signals a retreat from the protections afforded to Black victims of racial terror by the Civil Rights Act of 1871 (also known as the Ku Klux Klan Act).Several of our guests on Light ‘Em Up have run face first into the stone-cold, hard truths and effects of qualified immunity.—      As a case study we'll examine the fact pattern in a case called Betts v Brennan whereby an officer was sued for using his taser on a non-compliant motorist.—      We examine and amplify on the historic background of the concept of qualified immunity.—      Drilling down on the original intent, pro's/con's and purposes of the law.—      Search out how this doctrine, for lack of a better description, has become “twisted and perverted”, providing what for all intents and purposes is a never-ending “get out of jail free card” to members of law enforcement (and other governmental agents) — even when they violate the law.We share inconvenient truths how qualified immunity (as it has been regularly implemented):—      erodes justice and public trust—     blocks accountability—     sets an unreasonably high legal barrier—     serves to further injure those who have already been injured — as victims must identify a near-identical precedent, meaning they have to cite a similar case that a prior victim experienced to challenge misconduct, as we mentioned, an often “insurmountable legal hurdle”.As education is always a foundational pillar of Light ‘Em Up, we introduce you to the concept of Respondeat superior:  A legal doctrine and Latin term that literally means, “let the master respond”.It holds employers liable for the actions of their employees — which is also known as vicarious liability. And we empower you with six of the Supreme Court's landmark decisions that have further defined and carved out this judicial doctrine since its inception by the Warren Court. This episode is jam-packed with rock-solid research and information regarding the legal concept of qualified immunity. After today, after tuning in, you will speak with authority about the topic — forever setting you head and shoulders above and apart from everyone else — who speak without knowing.Tune in and be educated and empowered you with the facts, not fiction!Follow our sponsors:  Newsly & Feedspot. We want to hear from you!

Send us a textThe New York Giants offseason is heating up with major rumors and key moves shaping the team's future. Reports indicate that the Los Angeles Rams have granted Matthew Stafford permission to speak with other teams, and the Giants are among those showing interest. With Stafford's contract situation in flux, a trade isn't out of the question. Jordan Raanan revealed that New York previously inquired about Stafford's availability at last year's trade deadline, and if the Rams can't find a financial compromise, the possibility of Stafford in a Giants uniform could become real. Meanwhile, speculation around Kyler Murray's future in Arizona suggests the Cardinals might look to move on from their former first overall pick. If they decide to sell high, the Giants could be a potential landing spot as they continue evaluating their quarterback options.  On the coaching front, the Giants have hired former NFL running back Ladell Betts as their new running backs coach. Betts has been coaching at Iowa since 2021, where he helped develop standout Kaleb Johnson into an All-American. His connection to the Ferentz coaching tree adds another layer to Brian Daboll's growing staff. The Giants hope Betts can elevate the team's backfield, which could be in flux depending on offseason moves.  In other Giants news, Plaxico Burress' Super Bowl ring was recently sold for a staggering $280,000, making it the second-highest price ever paid for a Super Bowl ring. Certification from Burress himself indicates that he sold the ring last November. The high price tag shows just how significant that championship moment was for Giants fans and collectors alike.  As free agency approaches, NFL Wire has predicted that the Giants should target Trey Smith, the standout offensive lineman from Kansas City. The interior offensive line remains a major concern, and signing Smith could help stabilize the unit while allowing Jermaine Eluemunor to stay at right tackle. If a bidding war drives Smith's price too high, Will Fries could be a more affordable fallback option. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons have been linked to Giants edge rusher Azeez Ojulari, who could be on the move in free agency.  Another major draft storyline is unfolding as Shedeur Sanders has announced he won't throw at the NFL Combine, instead focusing on interviews with teams and waiting for Colorado's Pro Day to showcase his arm. This decision could impact the quarterback landscape as teams evaluate their draft boards.  With all these developments, the Giants have no shortage of crucial decisions to make. Will they pursue Stafford or another veteran quarterback? Could they invest heavily in the offensive line? And how will their new coaching hires shape the team in 2025? This week we discussed the thought of one of 20th-century Marxism's socialist opponents, Tomáš Masaryk. Masaryk was reviled by Czech communists until they appropriated him and he was an opponent of capitalism until the champions of capitalism did the same. He was a social democrat with an ethical and Christian-humanist vision of socialism that inspired the Prague Spring but was later coopted by the opponents of the working class and human liberation. A State without Suicidehttps://www.commonwealmagazine.org/state-without-suicide Betts, R.
