For this week's podcast, Brion shares some books and movies that were written about or written by former players. A few were written or directed by Quinn Early, and not surprisingly, there are a few books about Nile Kinnick. There are also books about Duke Slater, Connie Hawkins, Chuck Long, Bob Stoops, Chris Street, Ronnie Lester and even some less famous players. Player profiles include Jerry Hilgenberg, who walked-on at Iowa in the early 1950's and had two sons that played at Iowa and in the NFL (Jay and Joel). Sadly he passed away last week. With the news yesterday of Kadyn Proctor joining the Hawks, I also profile a big-time football recruit back in 1972, Butch Caldwell. He also had all the big schools after him, as he was a dual-threat QB that was desperately needed after Iowa's 1-10 season in 1971. He helped lead the Hawks to a huge upset at #11 Penn State in 1976. In this episode Kenyon is joined by Mike and Patty Street to discuss the legacy of their son Chris Street. Chris Street was an American college basketball player who played as a power forward for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1990 to 1993. He was born on February 2, 1972 in Leon, Iowa and moved to Indianola, Iowa in 1987, where he starred in basketball, baseball and football at Indianola High School. He committed to play basketball at the University of Iowa as a junior in high school. Street was a hard-working and passionate player who averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in his junior season. He set a school record by making 34 consecutive free throws, a record that still stands today2. He was a potential NBA player, but his life was tragically cut short on January 19, 1993, when he died in a car accident after colliding with a snow plow on the outskirts of Iowa City. Street's number 40 was retired by the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chris Street Award was created to honor the player or players who best exemplify his spirit, enthusiasm and intensity. Street is remembered as one of the greatest Hawkeyes of all time and a beloved figure in Iowa basketball history.

Street was midway through his junior season on the Iowa basketball team, and an emerging star as a 6-foot-8 power forward, when he was killed. Settles was a high school senior and an Iowa recruit when the tragedy happened. The Big Ten Network will honor Street's legacy by airing an hour-long documentary at approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday to mark 30 years since the tragedy occurred.

TLG

Lookingbill brings the types of insights only a teammate can to break down that team, the expectations for that year, and the tragic loss of his friend. The Hawkeyes had to regroup as a team for a game at Michigan State just 9 days after Street's death. January 31st 1993 was the first time the the Haweyes played at home without #40 on the floor. Tim and Wade breakdown that game vs. the Fab Five in Carver-Hawkeye and the life and legacy of Chris Street.

A host of luminaries in the earth energies/healing field, including Chris Street (author of "London - City of Revelation"), Paul Broadhurst and Hamish Miller (co-authors of "The Sun and the Serpent") and Colin Bloy, founder of Fountain International are all interviewed here by my first guest Giles Bryant (Bard of the London Earthstar Grove) and give practical instructions on how to effect significant change in both ourselves and our surroundings by meditating, praying and chanting, all of which is greatly amplified at the numerous sacred sites marking the node points of the global energy grid. The 17-minute Fountain International video can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RodkoNm5hCA In 1981 Colin Bloy conceived the idea that communities, like people, can suffer from dis-ease and be healed. He proposed that people use a simple meditation to harness the power unconditional love and intention to bring healing to their local communities. The first people to apply this chose the Old Stein fountain in the middle of their community in Brighton as the visual focus for their meditation. The effects were startling: dramatic reductions in crime rates and an increase in people's sense of well being were recorded by residents and visitors alike. The “Fountain” technique of community and planetary healing has spread around the world. Fountain International is dedicated to promoting world peace through this proven technique of meditation. It can be done alone or in a group. http://www.fountaininternationalmagazine.com/
His Holiness BV Nemi Maharaja was raised in a communist/atheist household, gained a science degree at Oxford, became a Zen Buddhist monk, found that unsatisfying and eventually settled his spiritual path after meeting His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the saintly founder of the worldwide Hare Krishna movement, and now travels extensively and teaches full-time as a senior lecturer. Maharaja wrote a celebrated book, "Darwin's Secret Identity" which methodically exposed the glaring flaws in the alleged science of Darwinian evolution, not rejecting the idea altogether, but going on to demonstrate the far more evidence-based science of Subjective Evolution of Consciousness. After reading Chris Street's sacred geometry masterclass work "Earthstars - The Visionary Landscape", now re-published as "London - City of Revelation" (available at www.earthstars.co.uk ), Maharaja shares his personal reflections here on the relevance of sacred geometry to the timeless teachings of the Vedas, and how we can utilize the numerous sacred sites found all over Greater London and worldwide to enhance our own personal practices - in whatever path we have chosen to follow - during this time of unprecedented spiritual transformation now sweeping the globe, as we enter a bright new dawn of Conscious Evolution. This interview can also be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUxoFiYeIt0
Yoga teacher, singer/songwriter, disciple of Paramahamsa Yogananda, founder of the World Healing Project and co-founder with his wife Juliette of Wellbeing In Schools, Giles shares a wealth of experience in living in the wild, sacred geometry and the healing effects of chanting, praying and meditating at the numerous powerful energy centres scattered all around London. Having been conferred with the title "Bard of the Earthstar Grove" by none other than Chris Street himself, author of "London - City of Revelation" (available at https://www.earthstars.co.uk ), Giles takes the listener on an epic storytelling journey through travels in India, mystic yogis and ancient Druid tree circles leading right up to the present urgent need for harmony to be restored on Earth, most especially through singing together in groups. A cracking good conversation with a very dear old friend!

IOWA CITY, Iowa – If you drove the lane against Iowa in the early 1990s, you dealt with Acie Earl. And often times, he sent your shot right back to you free of charge. The shot-blocker from Moline (IL) High won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior and still holds the school record for career blocked shots (365). He was more than a one trick pony, however. His 1,779 points rank third all-time on the school leader board behind only Roy Marble and Aaron White. His 811 rebounds put him seventh in Hawkeye history. The Boston Celtics drafted Earl in the first round and 19th overall in the 1993 NBA Draft. He and Ricky Davis, who went 21st in ’98, were the only Iowa first-round picks since ’90. We caught up with Earl for our latest Hawkeye History podcast, during which he talked about what he’s doing these days and his time at Iowa, including playing for Dr. Tom Davis and his friendship with the late Chris Street.
