Peer into the world of birds, and eyes of many different colors peer back. While eye color isn't tied to one group of birds or another, a common pattern is a change in eye color as immature birds grow to adulthood. Bald Eagles, Ring-billed Gulls, and ducks such as goldeneyes and scaup have brown eyes as youngsters, and yellow eyes as adults. Red-tailed Hawks reverse this pattern, with their eyes changing from yellow to brown. And the yellow eyes of a young Cooper's Hawk, pictured here on the right, turn deep red as they reach maturity. Episode 213:In the spring of 1606, a new Ben Jonson play premiered, not on this occasion at the Blackfriars theatre performed by one of the child companies, but at the Globe and performed by the King's Men. The reasons for why Jonson sold his play to the King's Men are not completely clear. Having a play performed by the Kings Men was, of course, prestigious in itself, and some of his early plays had been performed by the Lord Chamberlin's Men, but up to this point for his most recent plays Johnson had seemed to prefer using the child companies. It may be that the Children of the Queens Revels were wary of another Jonson play after the problems that ‘Eastward Ho' had caused for the playwrights, or perhaps Johnson himself felt it would be wise to distance himself from that association and switching to the adult company was a way of doing that. Perhaps Jonson had seen the writing on the wall for the Children of the Queens Revels after they had got into trouble for a production of a play by John Day called ‘The Isle of Gulls'. Quick San Diego update with a full rundown of what's happening around North County right now. We kick things off with a weekend recap - local baseball games, a SeaWorld trip, and Chris finding some new hiking trails around La Costa Oaks and the Preserve with some solid views looking out toward the lagoon and Carlsbad. From there we get into the San Diego sports scene. The Sockers are in the MASL finals, the Gulls and Seals are both in playoff runs, and San Diego FC is hitting a rough stretch but still in the mix. The Padres, on the other hand, are starting to heat up despite a few bats still trying to figure it out.We also cover some local updates including a new pasta spot in Encinitas, an upcoming Food and Wine event at the Zoo, and the latest with Stone Brewing being sold again. To wrap it up, we get into the story behind Oceanside's Roberts Cottages and how they went from 1920s auto courts to some of the earliest condo-style ownership in the area.
A soundscene, of an island. Asleep. Between the tides. About this time last year we visited Burgh Island in Devon on the south west coast of England. We made two long-form overnight recordings while we were there. Burgh Island is reached on-foot from Bigbury-on-Sea via a sand causeway. The causeway completely disappears beneath the waves twice a day at high tide making the island accessible only via the magnificent sea tractor. This passage of time is from the recording the Lento box made in Bigbury-on-Sea, tied to a palm tree facing onto the beach and out towards the island. It's the dead of night. 1am to 2am. Weather conditions extremely mild. Wind speeds very light, 1 to 2 knots. Human activity virtually nil for tens of miles, in all directions, including the entire dome of the night sky. The pristine quality of quiet open space in this area enables a crystal clear sound-view of the whole beach and the sea. It's quite a rare thing to witness especially here in the UK. No rumbles in the sky. Not a hint of an aeroplane, anywhere. As if air travel has never been invented. This must be how the world sounded a hundred years ago. The pure uninterrupted high definition sound of a gently shifting sea. Of the tide, so gradually coming in. Of an island, silently asleep, centre of scene. * What makes this sound photograph so precious to us is the crystal clarity of the waves and the movement of the waves as they break upon the flat sands of the beach under a perfectly silent night sky. Herring gulls and oyster catchers are occasionally audible but their calls are relatively sparse and there are long empty gaps. If you are able to hear extremely delicate sound you may also hear some tiny mewing sounds to far left of scene. These are the sheep and lambs nocturnally grazing fields further along the coast. ** You can listen to Part I of this same long-form recording in episode 265 midnight to 1am.

Send a textWhy do birds have the names they do?In this episode of Wildly Curious, Katy Reiss kicks off a new mini-series called “Bird Name Game”, exploring the fascinating origins behind bird names. Each episode looks at two birds, their natural history, and the surprising linguistic stories behind what we call them. This episode dives into two iconic seabirds: the albatross and the gull. The albatross, one of the largest flying birds on Earth, can glide across the ocean for thousands of miles with barely a wingbeat. But its name didn't start in English. It traveled through Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, and Latin, changing spelling and even switching which bird it referred to before becoming the name we know today.Gulls, on the other hand, have a much simpler origin. Their name likely comes from ancient Celtic and Norse roots that imitate the bird's loud, wailing call—the same cry that echoes across beaches, harbors, and parking lots everywhere.Along the way, we explore:How albatrosses travel thousands of miles using ocean windsWhy many albatross species form lifelong partnershipsThe surprising linguistic journey from “alcatraz” to “albatross”Why gulls were named after the sound they makeHow bird names reflect human language, culture, and first impressionsIf you love birding, natural history, ornithology, or wildlife science, this mini-series reveals how the names of birds tell stories about exploration, language, and the people who first encountered them.Subscribe for more episodes of Wildly Curious, where science, nature, and curiosity collide. Marcus Montagnino and Elijah Kinney have been at the center of one of the most special seasons in Endicott College history. The Gulls sit at 28–1, fueled by the growth of a roster that has taken a major leap from last season to now becoming a legitimate national contender. Montagnino and Kinney have formed one of the most dynamic duos in Division III basketball, both earning All-Conference honors in the Conference of New England while consistently leading Endicott in big moments. Montagnino's story is one of the most unique in college basketball. A former walk-on at Xavier University who later played club basketball, he eventually found his opportunity at Endicott and quickly turned it into a historic career. In his first season with the Gulls, he averaged 22.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, becoming the first NABC All-American in program history and the conference's Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Kinney—who developed at the highly respected Brimmer and May School prep program—has blossomed into a dominant two-way forward whose scoring and rebounding have elevated Endicott's ceiling even further. Now, the Gulls' remarkable season has them deep in March with their sights set on a national title. With a 28–1 record and the momentum of one of the best teams in program history, Montagnino and Kinney are leading Endicott into a massive Sweet 16 matchup against Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday. With both players playing the best basketball of their careers, the stage is set for a huge showdown as the Gulls chase a trip to the Elite 8. Available wherever you get your podcasts.
