Tony Hicks is currently in his 7th professional season, having played in countries like Hungary, Germany, Venezuela and more, but this basketball career wasn't always a dream of his. Tony actually grew up in Chicago wanting to be the next great NFL quarterback, modeling his game after Chicago legend Donovan McNabb. Tony mentioned that this “late bloomer” timeline actually helped his basketball career by helping him avoid the mental and physical burnout that many early basketball specialization athletes run into during their careers. Tony's basketball started to take off as a sophomore at Chicago [football] powerhouse St. Rita High School, where he began to draw major interest on the court from D1 schools around the country. After a summer injury that took him out of that football season, he began to prepare for that basketball season and next looked back. The rest was history, and the story is still being written as his 7 year professional basketball career continues to blossom. In this episode, Tony takes us through his dominant career at Penn, his grad transfer year at Louisville with the legendary Rick Pitino and the different stages of growth throughout his pro career. Tony is currently in the top league in Hungary, coming off the best year of his career and looking to continue to take the leaps he has over the past few seasons. In many ways, the topic of conversation for this episode revolves around what ultimately amounts to a fairly vanilla, almost-index like portfolio. The asset class in question, however, may verge on the exotic for listeners with less fluency in the field of derivatives. My guest is Eric Ervin, President and CEO of Reality Shares, and he has joined me to discuss their flagship ETF DIVY. I would argue that DIVY is one of the few exposures that fits the definition of both being liquid and alternative. By tapping into the OTC market, Eric and his team build a portfolio of 1-to-5 year dividend swaps, which have historically earned investors a unique return known as the dividend risk premium. Eric’s confidence to bring such a unique product into the market was borne from his experience as an advisor, where he utilized alternatives extensively with his clientele. Learning more about this experience in evaluating alternatives and the mental framework he used that allowed him to allocate upwards of 50% of client portfolios to alternatives is where we begin our conversation.

Ryan Ballantyne of Reality Shares explains their unique proprietary evaluation system, DivCon. This seeks to identify companies that are going to raise their dividend or potentially cut their dividend. DIVY doesn't care what the market does today. It really only cares what that dividend is doing.

Pimm Fox and Lisa Abramowicz talk to Silla Brush, a financial regulation reporter for Bloomberg, about how Donald Trump could disrupt global banking rules. Then, they discuss the global bond rout with Eaton Vance's Eric Stein. Also, Alex Sherman, an M&A reporter for Bloomberg, tells Pimm and Lisa how a Trump presidency could affect deals between China and the U.S. Finally, Eric Ervin, CEO of Reality Shares, gives an outlook for dividend stocks.
In this episode of Strategic Investor Radio, host Charlie Wright interviews Ryan Ballantyne of Reality Shares, a San Diego-based asset management firm focused on dividends. Reality Shares issued its first ETF in December 2014 and won ETF.com’s Best New ETF Issuer award the following year. The firm also provides free ratings for 1,200 dividend-paying stocks at its website. Mr. Ballantyne says he used to be a trader, but he sleeps much better at night since switching his focus to dividends. Dividends are real, he insists, adding “you can’t fake a dividend.” Regardless of who wins the presidential election or whatever else happens, Apple’s dividend policy is unlikely to be affected, according to Ballantyne. He also points out that companies like Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, and Johnson & Johnson didn’t cut their dividends in the wake of the financial crisis; and recent dividend hikes by Qualcomm and Home Depot have been enough to offset dividend cuts by energy firms in the S&P 500.
