Derek goes on site to the Los Angeles headquarters of Azure 3D Printed Homes to see how their approach to affordable housing with 3D printing differs from Boxabl's assembly line approach (ILAB Episode 245). Derek sits down with co-founder Gene Eidelman to talk how he went from growing up in Ukraine to running a startup to solve the housing shortage. Then Derek and Johnny discuss if they'd invest in this, and how they'd utilize these homes for themselves. Gene Eidelman is a co-founder of Azure Printed Homes, the first-to-market construction company to utilize 3D printing technology and recycled materials to create modern prefab units 70% faster than traditional building methods, while making a positive impact on the environment. Gene went to undergrad school at USC and holds an MBA from Pepperdine. He was recognized for resettling 6,000 refugees from the former Soviet Union in the late 80s by the United States Jaycees. In addition, he appeared on Oprah Winfrey Show, and served on numerous non-profit educational organizations in the US, India, and the UK. He has over 35 years of experience building and developing residential properties. His startup before Azure was an education management company which he grew to $120MM in revenue with 1,800 employees on three continents. He co-founded Azure in 2019. Azure initially bootstrapped its growth and raised a pre-seed angel round earlier this year and is in the middle of a $5MM seed round raise. Azure generates $400K/mo in revenue and has over $14MM in pre-orders. Mass production of the units will begin before the end of this year. Derek jumps in on the intro and outro with Johnny where the guys catch up and discuss the Financial Samurai's hitting points and what they agree/disagree with. In 2009, the world was falling apart, and my net worth was taking a beating. I thought it would be a good idea to start a personal finance site to help myself and others make sense of chaos. After all, I had spent 10 years working at Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse, studied economics at William & Mary, got my MBA from UC Berkeley, saved aggressively, diversified my investments, and still got financially rocked! Since the global financial crisis, more than 90 million visitors have stopped by Financial Samurai to learn, share, and grow. After writing over 2,500 personal finance articles, I've used my knowledge and the perspectives of so many to write an instant Wall Street Journal bestseller entitled, Buy This, Not That: How To Spend Your Way To Wealth And Freedom. The book is your secret weapon to getting ahead in this hyper-competitive world.  You can buy a hard copy on Amazon or any book retailer. By the time you finish BTNT you will gain at least 100X more value than its cost. After spending 30 years working in finance, writing about finance, and studying finance, I'm certain you will love Buy This, Not That. Harvest Returns has some unique investments including tech plays, indoor farming, cattle, aquaculture and more. Johnny and Derek discuss their thoughts on the food industry as a whole and whether they'd invest in these. The guys also do a quick followup on their car situations since they last spoke about them in ILAB 236. While serving as a career naval officer, Chris Rawley visited dozens of war-torn and poverty stricken countries and began to appreciate the importance of agriculture to every single person on earth. As a professional investor with this new found appreciation, he decided to invest in a farm, but quickly discovered that these types of assets were inaccessible to the average person. The problem drove him to create Harvest Returns in 2016 to democratize investments in agriculture. Rawley has held corporate management roles in Jones Lang LaSalle, Electronic Data Systems, L-3 Communications, and served as a defense consultant at Special Operations Command with Blackbird Technologies. He has invested in real estate and income-producing agriculture for nearly two decades. Rawley is an angel investor in early stage agriculture and food companies, including the Indian agriculture FinTech company Jai Kisan. He serves on the advisory board of the AgTech start-up AgroFides. Rawley is a Captain in the Navy Reserve, serving as the Reserve Chief of Staff for United States SIXTH Fleet, and provides oversight for more than 500 sailors operating across Europe and Africa. During his 29 year military career, Rawley has filled a variety of leadership positions in naval, expeditionary, and joint special operations units afloat and ashore. Johnny interviews Composer CEO & Co-Founder Ben Rollert on this episode to talk quantitative strategies. If you aren't familiar with quants, they've been used by hedge funds for decades to determine trades and were only available to those with advanced mathematics degrees until now. Composer has created an easy to use tool featuring hundreds of pre-determined strategies aka “symphonies” like following your favorite billionaire investor, buying dips in sectors, hedging inflation and so much more. After the interview, Johnny and Derek go through some of the various pre-determined “symphonies” and which ones they'd execute in their own portfolios. Ben Rollert has over a decade of experience in product and data science leadership roles. He was previously VP of Product and Data Science at Breather, a work space as a service company. Ben has been an active trader and investor since he was a teenager, and founded Composer in response to his own frustration with the difficulty of implementing automated trading strategies. Today, he serves as CEO of Composer, the premiere no-code platform for building and investing in algorithmic investing strategies. Composer has raised funding from First Round Capital, Alumni Ventures and Packy McCormick's Not Boring Fund. Composer is the next generation of active investing. A book mentioned many times over on ILAB throughout the years is "Adventure Capitalist" and we were finally able to speak to author Jim Rogers on this episode! Sam and Derek kick off the show both talking about the influence of the book and then jump into the interview. Sam interviews Jim where he touches on his experiences visiting nearly every country in the world, even ones at war during the time. Jim then speaks of his views on the current state of the economy, what markets you should be looking to invest in, the importance of history to the economy, and where he plans on traveling to next. Sam and Derek wrap up the show with travel experiences of their own and what they think about Jim's thoughts on the future, especially with regards to China.  Jim Rogers, a native of Demopolis, Alabama, is an author, financial commentator, adventurer, and successful international investor.  He has been frequently featured in Time, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Barron's, Forbes, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, The Business Times, The Straits Times and many media outlets worldwide.  He has also appeared as a regular commentator and columnist in various media and has been a professor at Columbia University. After attending Yale and Oxford University, Rogers co-founded the Quantum Fund, a global-investment partnership.  During the next 10 years, the portfolio gained 4200%, while the S&P rose less than 50%.  Rogers then decided to retire – at age 37.  Continuing to manage his own portfolio, Rogers kept busy serving as a full professor of finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, and, in 1989 and 1990, as the moderator of WCBS's 'The Dreyfus Roundtable' and FNN's 'The Profit Motive with Jim Rogers'. In 1990-1992, Rogers fulfilled his lifelong dream: motorcycling 100,000 miles across six continents, a feat that landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records.  As a private investor, he constantly analyzed the countries through which he traveled for investment ideas.  He chronicled his one-of-a-kind journey in Investment Biker: On the Road with Jim Rogers.  Jim also embarked on a Millennium Adventure in 1999.  He traveled for 3 years on his round-the-world, Guinness World Record journey. It was his 3rd Guinness Record.  Passing through 116 countries, he covered more than 245,000 kilometers, which he recounted in his book Adventure Capitalist: The Ultimate Road Trip.  His book, Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably In The World's Best Market, was published in 2004.  Another of his books A Bull in China describes his experiences in China as well as the changes and opportunities there. His recent book A Gift to My Children is a heartfelt, indispensable guide for his daughters (as well as for all adults and children) to find success and happiness. His latest memoir Street Smarts: Adventures on the Road and in the Markets was published in February 2013. Recently in January 2018, his book A Gift to My Children, 2nd edition which was published in Chinese, was launched in China. And in October 2018, another of his book The Next Big Wave, published in Complex Chinese, was launched in Taiwan. Rogers had two number one bestsellers in Japan namely The Future of Japan and A Warning to Japan that were published in January and July 2019 respectively. Then the show jumps to longtime ILAB listener and tax professional Chris Kotarba (Chris K) who explains ways, for U.S. citizens in particular, to hack the system and legally save on taxes. Legislation rules in place for other investments do not necessarily apply to crypto, so he explains how you can potentially save a lot on your taxes if you are holding crypto. Then Sam and Johnny circle back to share thoughts on the complicated tax situation around crypto and tease an upcoming 101 episode on more broader tax hacks.  Chris Kotarba (“Chris K”) is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Taxand, LLC in San Jose. He specializes in international tax and his primary areas of concentration are planning, structuring, and transfer pricing, both outbound and inbound, for multinational companies of all sizes. Mr. Kotarba has worked with clients across various industries, including retail, technology (both software and hardware), pharma, medical devices, and financial services. He has specialized expertise in transactions involving cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and other digital assets, including ICOs, forks and token swaps. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Kotarba spent eight years as an attorney with DLA Piper in Palo Alto. He led more than a dozen global expansions and other corporate restructuring projects, developed a focus for US companies with Asian operations and closed a high-profile joint venture in China. Mr. Kotarba also helped companies onshore their IP to the US, both permanently and temporarily. He was briefly seconded to DLA Piper's Hong Kong office, where he worked with Asian companies expanding to the US. Mr. Kotarba earned a JD from Columbia Law School and a LLM in taxation from NYU School of Law. He is admitted to practice law in California, New York, and Massachusetts. With a budget of over US$ 10 million, Child's Dream, with its over 55 colleagues, has implemented or runs over 800 charitable projects and programmes in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, called the Mekong Sub-Region.  Marc's motivation to co-found Child's Dream stems from his experiences in working, living and traveling in Asia for many years. While working in Hong Kong and Singapore as a private banker, Marc had the privilege to meet many wealthy individuals who helped the less fortunate by making donations and volunteering in various charity projects in the region. This inspired him to do his part in making a difference for the underprivileged in society. After nearly 20 years with UBS, Marc left the bank in 2003 to set up Child's Dream Foundation together with Daniel Siegfried. Marc is a ‘Swiss Certified Banker' and an alumni of the Executive Program of the Swiss Finance Institute (formerly Swiss Banking School, Zurich) as well as the ‘High Performance Boards' Program of the IMD Business School in Lausanne. Entrepreneur Magazine calls Justin Donald the “Warren Buffett of Lifestyle Investing.” He's a master of low-risk cash flow investing, specializing in simplifying complex financial strategies, structuring deals, and disciplined investment systems that consistently produce profitable results. His ethos is to “create wealth without creating a job.” In the span of 21 months, and before his 37th birthday, Justin's investments drove enough passive income for both he and his wife Jennifer to leave their jobs. Following his simple investment system and 10 Commandments of Lifestyle Investing, Justin negotiated deals with over 100 companies, multiplied his net worth to over eight figures, and maintained a family-centric lifestyle in less than 2 years. Just 2 years later, he doubled his net worth again. He now consults and advises entrepreneurs, executives, and successful media personalities on lifestyle investing. Justin has also appeared on nearly 100 podcasts, including Entrepreneurs on Fire, The Mike Dillard Show, Making Bank, Achieve Your Goals, Capability Amplifier, Tractionville, Inside Personal Growth, Conscious Millionaire, Franchise Secrets, the Accelerated Investor, and Unbecoming. Justin is a lifelong leader and trainer with a track record of achievement. In his 20s, he worked with Cutco/Vector and quickly became one of the top managers in the company, and one of the youngest to achieve Hall of Fame status. His personal playbook of best practices was deployed nationwide as a training program to onboard sales representatives. CEO and Co-Founder Jesse Randall is a fintech startup executive and venture capitalist helping to usher in the new era of generational wealth creation for everyday people. His roots in small farm life in rural America as part of a very large family gave him a unique foundational work ethic and view of the world. He has come to understand that he would rather imagine the world as it can become rather than settle for the shortcomings that surround us everywhere. Anything is possible with the right mindset, people, and resources at hand. Outside of work, he enjoys endurance sports such as Ironman races, cycling, and marathons, and wouldn't trade his life with his sweetheart and five children for any amount of treasure. Sweater is hell-bent on leveling the playing field and reinventing venture capital to reach its maximum potential. That starts by creating a venture capital fund that anyone can invest in. Sweater's vision is to pool money from millions of regular people into a world-class venture fund, wisely deploying that capital into startups that shape the world we live in. Every founder should be able to build their vision, and every person should be able to support the startups that create the next generation of influence and wealth. After starting his career as a financial analyst in Silicon Valley (EA, SanDisk, Guidespark), he relocated to Austin, Texas to pursue real estate investing fulltime.
