Is bigger always better? Not so fast. In this episode, I sit down with Jonathan Bennett—former hospital exec turned consultant and coach—to talk about what happens when growth leads to burnout, how boards can shift from control to connection, and why slowing down might be the smartest move your nonprofit ever makes. We explore strategy, leadership transitions, and the power of authentic relationships—in and out of the boardroom. Episode Highlights 02:16 Career Journey and Insights 07:04 Importance of Organizational Alignment 14:48 Governance and Relational Leadership 20:19 Indigenous Approaches to Meetings My guest for this episode is Jonathan Bennett. He left an executive role at a large hospital to strike out on his own, founding a management consulting firm. And, for 10 years, things were great. The company grew–became a B Corp and served hundreds of organizations. The problem was, he was unfulfilled. After a successful exit in which he went through a management buyout of his company, Jonathan founded his coaching practice so that he could fulfill his purpose to create an intimate space for leaders who need to be listened to deeply. Jonathan Bennett is an advisor and executive coach for founders, CEOs and C- Suite leaders who have a purpose in the world but need help solving their organization's toughest obstacles. Jonathan takes his experience as a CEO, board member, and founder to his coaching. As a feminist and social justice advocate, Jonathan brings a progressive approach to his work so that clients always find a way out of even the most complex challenges. He resides in Ontario, Canada with his family and two dogs. A published author, he's written seven literary books. In this episode, Cindy Esliger discusses negativity bias, the tendency we have to look for what's going wrong when we're in an environment that doesn't affirm or value our contributions. This focus on the negative isn't out of pessimism, but is a survival strategy. However, the more we allow ourselves to focus on the negative, the more it feels like the truth. Cindy examines how this happens and what it takes to change our mindset and challenge the negative patterns. Breaking free of self-limiting narratives is possible, and Cindy explains how it's done. Negativity is rarely something we consciously choose. It's a survival technique that becomes a default way of thinking over time. The first step to breaking the pattern, therefore, is acknowledging how easy it is to focus on the negative. Cindy addresses how the habit forms and what we unconsciously do to feed it. When we understand how we're responding to negative input or a toxic environment, we can identify where the self-doubt takes root. She presents the idea of shifting the pattern of our input to reframe our mindset. Cindy's advice on breaking the cycle of negativity includes making a choice not to let our challenges be the only story we tell ourselves. By giving ourselves permission to believe that outcomes other than negative ones are possible, we start to retrain our brains to identify opportunity as well as risk. Cindy talks about the pitfalls of internalized comparison and the glorification of suffering for suffering's sake. She breaks down how these add to negative bias and work against our success. Instead, she advises giving ourselves the benefit of the doubt so can alter our own mindset and outlook. In this episode, Cindy Esliger explores the power of words and why language is about more than communication. The words we choose shape how we view ourselves and what we believe is possible. By using more empowering words, we can open ourselves to new options and reclaim our sense of agency. Cindy offers insight into how different words impact our mindset and how to go about reframing our thoughts from a more positive perspective. It's not just about the meaning of our words, but the words themselves. The smallest, seemingly most casual words often carry the most weight. Words like can't, won't, don't, and should. We think they're harmless because we use them out of habit. But Cindy points out how the habits behind their use shape our behavior, confidence and careers over time. She examines how the words subtly mire us in limiting beliefs and suggests ways in which we can examine the circumstances that created the word habits and reframe them into a more positive light. Naming our experiences correctly is an important step towards healing from the limiting words we've been using. Cindy stresses that we don't have to find perfect words, we don't always have to sound polished, we just need to state the truth of our experience. She offers five ways to put this word into action: 1) Replace ‘but' with ‘and', 2) Trade ‘should' for ‘could', 3) Speak in terms of options and opportunities, 4) Notice our language without judgment, and 5) Reframe our past experiences with ‘even though' language. She encourages us to intentionally choose words that build us up, rather than tear us down. "You can try to develop self-awareness and take a beginner's mind in all things. This includes being open to feedback and truly listening, even when it might be hard to receive. I think that's been something I've really tried to practice. The other area is recognizing that just like a company or country, as humans we have many stakeholders. You may wear many hats in different ways. So as we think of the totality of your life over time, what's your portfolio of passions? How do you choose—as individuals, as society, as organizations, as humans and families with our loved ones and friends—to not just spend your time and resources, but really invest your time, resources, and spirit into areas, people, and contexts that bring you meaning and where you can build a legacy? So it's not so much advice, but more like a north star." - Sabastian V. Niles Fresh out of the studio, Sabastian Niles, President and Chief Legal Officer at Salesforce Global, joins us to explore how trust and responsibility shape the future of enterprise AI. He shares his journey from being a high-tech corporate lawyer and trusted advisor to leading AI governance at a company whose number one value is trust, reflecting on the evolution from automation to agentic AI that can reason, plan, and execute tasks alongside humans. Sabastian explains how Agentforce 3.0 enables agent-to-agent interactions and human-AI collaboration through command centers and robust guardrails. He highlights how organizations are leveraging trusted AI for personalized customer experiences, while Salesforce's Office of Ethical and Humane Use operationalizes trust through transparency, explainability, and auditability. Addressing the black box problem in AI, he emphasizes that guardrails provide confidence to move faster rather than creating barriers. Closing the conversation, Sabastian shares his vision on what great looks like for trusted agentic AI at scale. In this episode, Cindy Esliger talks about the invisible load of anxiety, stress, and self-imposed pressure that high-achieving women often carry under their calm and capable exteriors. What the world sees as strength hides exhaustion from trying to stay ahead of anxiety by never sitting still. Cindy breaks down how to recognize when constant busyness is a coping mechanism, how to separate stress from anxiety, and the key to reclaiming control over mind, body, and career. While from the outside we may appear superhuman by being perpetually in motion, that relentless busyness often masks deep-seated anxiety. Our culture has instructed us that the goal is to have it all together, to operate at a high level under pressure. But what about the unseen anxiety that exterior composure hides? Cindy names three steps to breaking the anxiety loop: 1) Get curious about symptoms, 2) Separate sensation from fear, and 3) Practice sitting with discomfort. Feeling stressed or anxious is not a sign we're broken. Discomfort doesn't mean we're failing. Cindy encourages us to get familiar with our body signals in order to remove the fear and take back our power. She teaches us about awareness, how to override our stress responses, and the power of redirecting past or future worry back to the present moment. Cindy explores how we can learn to find moments of true presence and how to show up intentionally so anxiety is not running the show. Her guidance helps to identify anxiety for what it is and demystify it so we can get comfortable in our own skin and embrace stillness.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Recognizing When You're Masking AnxietyAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

Uncomfortable Conversations PodcastUncomfortable Conversations SubstackCurious Worldview Newsletter - https://curiousworldview.beehiiv.com/subscribe-----Josh Szeps is a broadcaster, political commentator, and in my opinion, Australia's best interviewer. He has, afterall, conducted thousands of them… and from many different pulpits. Whether it's podcasting, Huffpost live, or radio, Josh has interviewed everyone from the biggest celebrities in the world, to academics, to geopolitics, to culture wars, comedy, economics and all the rest in between - it's incredible how flexible Josh is and how well he can extemporaneously talk about or ask the right questions of, seemingly any topic. He's also someone who has been doing this for decades, and seen from the front row the two most significant disruptions to media over that time. I wanted to get something evergreen on Josh's worldview and evolving timeline of a career… Josh Szeps is the creator and host of one of my favourite podcasts, ‘Uncomfortable conversations', and author of a substack by the same name. 00:00 - Who Is Josh Szeps05:16 - Navigating Career Paths: Serendipity and Ambition18:08 - Finding Aliveness: Reflections on Career and Life22:34 - The Journey to New York: Opportunities and Challenges33:19 - The Journey to HuffPost Live37:39 - Memorable Interviews and Guests39:20 - Preparation for Interviews42:21 - The Importance of Collaboration49:12 - Norm MacDonald & Joe Rogan 58:41 - The Joy of Media Engagement01:00:02 - Navigating Life Changes and Career Transitions01:10:50 - Alan Jones01:11:52 - The Influence of Podcasting01:12:35 - Living in Australia vs. the US01:15:09 - The Future of Independent Media01:21:40 - Innovating in Media Formats
"I quote a study that looked at 84 countries in terms of internal migration and India was dead last. That's not a knock against the culture. It's just not part of the culture that young women in particular leave home at 17, go to the other side of the country and work in a factory. You don't have that. So what's the phrase: Culture eats strategy for breakfast. Apple might have a plan, but like good luck upending 5,000 years of Indian culture to make it happen." - Patrick McGee, author of "Apple in China" Fresh out of the studio, Patrick McGee, San Francisco correspondent for the Financial Times and author of "Apple in China: The Capture of the World's Greatest Company" joined us in a conversation to unravel the extraordinary story of how the world's most valuable company became inextricably entangled with China. Patrick shared the backstory behind Apple's century-defining Faustian bargain and progressed through how he uncovered the untold story of Asia's contract manufacturing history through Apple's supply chain point of view. He unpacks the famous "Apple Squeeze" philosophy of paying suppliers minimally while providing invaluable training, and shares fascinating stories from characters like the ruthless negotiator Tony Blevins to the tragic figure of Jackie Haynes. Throughout the conversation, Patrick demonstrates how Apple inadvertently created China's contract manufacturing capabilities and explains why the company's current attempts to diversify to India face insurmountable cultural and political barriers. Last but not least, he argues that Apple's very success in China has become its greatest vulnerability, trapped in a relationship where going too fast risks Beijing's ire, while going too slow means remaining stuck in an increasingly untenable position. Episode Highlights: [00:03] Quote of the Day by Patrick McGee [01:00] Introduction: Patrick McGee, author of "Apple in China" [03:12] Lessons from Patrick's Career Journey [05:13] March 15, 2013: Xi Jinping's political awakening - Apple's first "oh shit moment" in China, just 12 hours after his inauguration [10:25] Apple's manufacturing DNA - why they control supply chains differently than other tech companies [12:09] The secret pyramid: ID → PD → MD - how Apple's industrial design gets translated into manufacturing reality [16:11] Terry Gou's legendary call: "I can fix this" - the moment Foxconn became Apple's key manufacturing partner [19:38] OEM vs ODM strategy: Why Terry Gou chose to never compete with clients, focusing on vertical integration instead [25:00] Tony Blevins' ruthless negotiations: "We don't have time for you to read the contract. You just need to sign it now" [26:45] The "Apple Squeeze" revealed: "We won't pay you much, but the experience will be invaluable" [28:27] Staggering impact: Apple trained 28 million people - greater than California's labor force, 6x Singapore's population [34:03] The Gang of Eight: Apple's first senior team living in China to navigate political pressures [41:45] Chinese dominance: Huawei, Xiaomi, and others now control 55% of global smartphone market share [48:08] Apple's double whammy: Supply Chain locked in China and TSMC [52:37] Apple's impossible balancing act in India: "Go too fast, risk Beijing's ire. Go too slow, remain stuck" [53:11] Jackie Haynes tragedy: Apple's failed attempt to improve worker conditions caught between operational demands and Xi Jinping's crackdown [57:09] Closing Profile: Patrick McGee, Author of "Apple in China": https://appleinchina.com and San Francisco correspondent for Financial Times LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/prmcgee/ Podcast Information: Bernard Leong hosts and produces the show.
